I love Ping's/Jung's Dried Beef and would have given them 4/5 stars, but out of frustration with trying to place an order via phone, I'm giving them only 2. I had plans to go into Manhattan and since I had to pay the congestion pricing I figured I'd make a trip into Chinatown. I was going to order about 5 lbs. of the beef. Some sweet and some spicy. Some for me and some for out of town, former NYer, friends (a purchase of about $170 Ping's missed out on). I called the day before and all day the day of. I couldn't get anyone on the phone. They have a web page, but the only way to contact them was... you guessed it... via phone. I learned from past experience that if you don't order ahead, all you get, if you're lucky, is crumbs. I decided not to waste more time and gas and just skipped the trip downtown. read more

Yhis is the best beef jerky ever. There is none other like it. Been coming here for decades.

I've been coming here for decades for the best beef jerky in town. It never lasts long and I wish I could afford to buy more.

Great dried beef a pork. First went there 30 years ago. I try to go when I can, but expensive!

Why the fuck to have a phone when they don't answer it at all? How do you do business? There is no website posted or anything to order their beef jerky. read more

Still my favorite place to buy beef jerky and tastes as good as always! I've been coming here since I was a child with my grandma. This place brings back memories. Chinese jerky is very different from American jerky. It is slightly translucent, not as dry or tough, and sweeter. Ping's sells pork and beef jerky in sweet and spicy variety. The pork jerky is less dry than the beef jerky, but I prefer the classic sweet beef jerky. It is currently $32/lb, a bit expensive but worth it! You can purchase a quarter or half a pound as well. Cash only! The store front isn't marked in English as Ping's Dried Beef (it's in Chinese), just locate it based on the address or images of the store front. Don't be alarmed when you enter the place and find it cluttered with random stuff, you've found the right place. It's a small family run shop and I believe the back of the shop is their living space. They tend to sell out quickly since they don't make huge batches, so I suggest calling in advance (or waiting for the next batch). They're closed on Mondays. read more

Amazing beef jerky. Just the amount of flavor that does not over power the beef. One of the oldest business in Chinatown, NY. Must try.

The beef and pork jerkies were quite tasty. Lots of flavor! The owner was really also super nice. He told us that they've been making jerky since 1985!! The place looks closed because it's so dark inside and the open sign that lights up is not lit up. But as long as there is an "open" sign on the door, they should be open. The decor is different and the store is dimly lit but don't let these things scare you away. Try their jerkies! read more

Their jerky is as good as it was over 20 years ago. Very little has changed inside the store, but the quality of their pork and beef jerky is still the best around. The BIG change is that you SHOULD contact John (the owner) at least a couple of days in advance to let him know your order. Email him at JungsDriedBeef@gmail.com. You can probably also call, but try the email as it's much easier and you'll get a confirmation for your order. It's a little over $30 a pound for their delicious (sweet or spicy) jerky, but very well worth it! You can order in smaller amounts, like quarter pound) if you want to try a selection of their flavors. I recommend their pork jerky as the meat is a little softer and more moist. Their beef jerky is also good, just that slight difference. You will NOT get anything if you just drop into the store. Make sure to email your order 2-3 days in advance. This stuff is made FRESH for you and it does take that long to make. Well worth the wait, just plan for it! (Their jerky is in strips and not like the mushy soft jerky chunks that others do.) read more

I had high expectations for this place since it was in the short documentary video featured at MOFAD, which stated this hole in the wall has stacked high and fresh made sweet and spicy jerky known throughout southeastern China and how it has survived for decades and the recipes have been passed down through generations. Sounds enticing, doesn't it? Ppl rated it as the best beef jerky in Chinatown but I don't think so. My family and I have been going to this other place for years, Ling Kee beef jerky on Canal St. and I think they have the best, most variety flavors of jerky. So I actually stumbled upon this place while walking down Chinatown this past weekend and decided to give it a try. I walked in and nobody was there to assist me, all I saw were empty jerky jars. After standing there for more than 5 minutes, a guy finally came out with some beef jerky and I was excited but was told they weren't for sale..they were other people's orders. He then told me the spicy beef and pork jerky would take another 30 minutes to be ready and I knew I couldn't come back later so I asked if he can just give me a 1/4 lb of that person's order, which was the sweet beef jerky and he agreed. I immediately took one out bc I wanted to try it while it's still warm and fresh. I don't know about the spicy ones but this sweet beef jerky was quite disappointing. I couldn't taste the sweetness and I find their beef jerky to be very hard and chewy unlike the ones I usually get from Ling Kee. read more

Passing by this old looking store front, I was told by friend that they sell the best tasting beef Jerky in NYC. I finally got the chance to walk into this no frills establishment on Sunday at 1:30pm. The place seemed very cluttered with random stuff. It reminded me of an episode from the TV show HOARDERS, but I didn't come here for the environment, I came for some beef jerky. When I walked in, all I saw were empty jars in the front. I thought maybe the guy was supposed to get the jerky from the back. But upon asking for some meat, the guy said sold out...come back later. WTF? Damn, I thought to myself...that's how good this jerky is? After walking around, I managed to walk back here at 4:00pm the same day and he had 2 jars filled with jerky. Asked for 1/2 lbs of the spicy beef for $12. Right when I exited, I took a strip, shoved it in my mouth and tried it. Tasted really good! It was spicy but not too overwhelming to take over the natural beef flavor. It does not compare to the beef jerky you buy in grocery stores. The consistency of it was very soft and a little moist from the spicy glaze/flavoring that coated the jerky. Best jerky I ever had. read more

This place used to be one of my favorite jerky place til I try Malaysia style jerky. Chinese style jerky is made differently compared to Malaysia style, they both used different parts of the meat. Malaysia tends to used mincemeat which makes the jerky softer. Anyway, in my opinion, Chinese jerky is way better than American style jerky, less salty and hard. read more

Because of the nostalgia factor I compare all jerkies to this family owned place. Fresh jerky that often sells out. It's also good to call ahead with special orders if you have them. We usually go for the beef or pork varieties that are not spicy. It is pricy though. About $15 for a half pound but I don't usually mind especially if you're aiming to treat yo self. Cash only! Check their hours too... I've tried to drop in a few times and they would be closed. I'm not a jerky expert but I really like this place! read more

I grew up eating the sweet pork jerky. When it was only $14 a lb. now it's $30+ a pound but I still buy at least 2lbs before I leave the city. You have to call ahead or you will walk into the store, see empty jars and be like "why are you open?" They constantly sell out and usually none is on display. It's a weird system. But just do yourself a favor and get the sweet pork. The beef ones are very tough texture wise and simply aren't as flavorful. So save your money, stick with the OINK. read more

Best house-made jerky in chinatown! Prepared by the same Chinese Toisan family since they were on Bayard Street many years ago! Worth every penny! For my 200th Yelp review, I wanted to write about something that I've always taken for granted, to be there when I want it. Ping's Beef Jerky is a place my family would go to, to get fresh beef jerky and it seems they have been in Chinatown forever. There are only 2 other fresh beef jerky places in Chinatown. One is a Malaysian jerky place and the other is King's Beef Jerky on Bayard St. Is there a thing as fresh jerky? Yes. There is. Ping's is not prepackaged. Ping's has been around for a long, long time and so far back that I can't even remember how long ago. Family own and run, these are the little, interesting shops that haven't changed much and the jerky still tastes about the same as I remember it, even though some of the flavorings have gone. Unlike American jerky, Ping's is sticky, meaty and not ultra dry, tough or overly salty. The term finger-lickin' good should apply here. I remember there was an oyster sauce based sauce and one that is fruity and of course the spicy one. The pieces are uniformly cut rectangles, unless you get the nuggets. When we were kids we used to always complain about granny, who would give you a thick, heavy-duty plastic bag that must already weigh an ounce, and then fill it up exactly to a pound, no more, no less. Hey, how about deducting some weight from that heavy plastic bag? But nope, she was exact on the scale, hitting the mark every time and she has taught generations of others to be the same...except for today. I haven't been to Ping's in years and this time I ordered only 1/2 lb of jerky. Holy...what??? To my disbelief the scale was off by .01. I would say that is the weight of that hefty plastic bag which they still use. The price per pound is now $26 and they will sell the jerky in 1/2 pound as well and the flavors are sweet or hot in slices or mixed bits and there is also pork jerky. I do like the sturdiness of the bags as it has endured some happy cat teeth marks, as in my family, humans as well as cats alike have been able to sniff out the fragrant aroma that is Ping's beef jerky. Many a cat and humans have licked their chops at pieces of protein goodness. Don't be frightened by the messy background apartment- like setting you'll see along with the jerky stored in large, clear glass jars like candy but instead it's meat candy. Just think of it as a family who make jerky and sells it from their home. read more

Love Ping's! Been coming here since I was really young. My whole family stops by every time they're in Chinatown. It's a small husband/wife establishment right next to Columbus Park. They close at 7pm, but come earlier though because they usually sell out on some of their main jerkies in the late afternoon. When you go in, you have to meet John. If you have a minute or two to talk to him, he's actually really funny and such a sweetheart. My personal favorite is their Spicy Oinkers! It's dried pork jerkies coated with a thin layer of honey and a dash of spiciness. I normally don't like spicy, but this flavor was very manageable. I'm almost regretting that I ordered a pound of the regular sweet oinkers and only 1/4 pound of the spicy ones. Will definitely come back to get more of the spicy ones. And...c'mon...how cute are the signs "Moos and Oinky". read more

Have you ever watched those movies where you step into some strange looking store front and the interior is completely unimpressive if darn near unappealing, yet it houses some great kept secret known only to locals? If you do, Ping's is one such real life place. The store front is unimpressive to say the least, and when you step inside it looks more like someone trashed a living room and bought fish tanks to keep sea life but then thought better of it. What is important however is what's in FRONT of this weirdness. There, you'll find several jars of different types of jerky. Among the kinds are beef and pork in either slices or small chunks. Some are sweet, others are spicy but they are ALL delicious. I am partial to the jerky that is made in small chunks. They have a wonderful chew to them that doesn't make your teeth feel like they're going to rip out of your gums. There's also something else you can be assured of: the jerky is always fresh. They make it on site and they often get orders days to weeks ahead of time, so you will sometimes come in and find nothing to buy because they're simply out of stock for the day - and if that doesn't speak to the quality I don't know what does! Be warned however, despite its unassuming appearance this place is not cheap. It's typically about $20/pound so don't expect cheap eats here. In my book however, it's worth every last penny! read more

Finally I found a beef jerky place in New York that reminds me of home in Taiwan. This beef jerky place is a hole in the wall but it is worth every penny. So my parents and I were back in Chinatown NYC once again. We took a visit to this place for some jerky. We arrived around 2pm, and The owner told us to come back in 40 minutes because the jerky was not ready. So we did some shopping around town and came back a couple of hours later. We didn't think it would sell out that fast. We came back and was greeted by his 14 year old daughter who asked us if we had pre-ordered. WHAT??? That's not how the Chinese operate and that's now this place operates. We were flabbergasted. My parents were upset. They've been going to this place since before this little girl was born. my mom pushed and pushed for jerky. "We're out of town and we're about to leave....your dad said it would be available at this time....we never had to pre-order before." Then the mom walked by, and she let us have whatever we wanted. SCORE! So while the daughter was filling our bag of jerky goodness, she also calls her dad on the phone, who was upstairs, and complains about how he wasn't telling customers to pre-order. It was pretty funny. "Daaaadddyyy....you forgot to tell customers to pre-order.......You are so meaaaaan to me......" Anyways, just beware that you have to pre-order now. You can call, and they would have something ready for you within an hour or so (I think). Or you can just ask to talk to the little girl's mom. ha! read more

If it wasn't for yelp, I would have gotten lost & walked right past this little shop. I was in NYC for a couple days & was given specific instructions to bring back beef jerky from this shop. Armed with just my iphone yelp app, I hunted down this place on my last day. Thank goodness for the pics of the green awning exterior or I would have walked right past this place! The small shop boasted just 4 types of jerky: Sweet Beef or Pork, Spicy Beef or Pork, and Sweet Beef brisket style. I purchased 3 lbs of the Sweet Beef & Pork ($22/lb) and handcarried it back home. According to the owner, it's best to consume within 10 days. A little less than a day back from NYC & the jerky is almost gone. Mission accomplished! read more

Every time i go to New York Chinatown, I would have to stop by at Jung's Beef Jerky. Sweet Beef/Pork Jerky - The jerky is so juicy, thin and very sweet. Spicy Beef/Pork - It taste so good with a small hint of spiciness. Every time I start eating it, I can't stop eating it. It's $22/lb. It's just so worth it! First come first serve for the jerky. Once it's sold out for that day, you have to wait for next time. I think the spicy beef is the best! the spicy pork is really good too! It has good meat flavor and very juicy. It looks so sketchy inside, but the family of this place is so nice. They spoke fluent English when you have an awesome conversation with them. They got very cool stuff in there, such as the backwards clock, LED strip, big screen TV with funny Chinese shows. They also take credit cards! :) read more

It was only after noticing all the jerky shops in NYC that I realized I've never even thought to look for these places in SF, having been spoiled by the jerky fare back in Taiwan. But, since I was exploring, and these came up, I thought, "why not!" Having run out of the spicy beef jerky, I opted for a mixed bag of his spicy pork and sweet pork jerkies, both of which ended up being pretty average: great texture, being just about the right chewiness, but average flavor. I do tend to find that most sweet pork jerkies end up being a little too sweet; on the flip-side, the spicy pork jerky wasn't very spicy at all. Three stars if you live in the area, two stars if you're visiting (aka: not really worth going out of your way for). ***Accessibility Info*** Venue - Contrary to the Yelp business details, Ping's IS actually accessible. Just, very, very barely. There's a ramp to get in, and just enough space for a regularly sized sports wheelchair to fit through to get to the register. But without enough space to turn inside, your only option is to back out. So, accessible, but difficult. You're better off asking at the door for what you want. Bathroom - Pretty sure there wasn't one. read more

If you're a fan of beef jerky, this place is worth a try. It's an establishment that has lasted from generation to generation, and the family who owns this place are long time locals in Chinatown. Since I was a kid my family would buy their sweet or spicy beef jerky as an occasional snack while we watched TVB dramas, sometimes we place orders for a large batch as a unique gift to others. I think newcomers will be puzzled if they go there, especially near closing hours----a lot of the jars will be empty (because it does sell out very, very quickly). Also don't expect a huge variety of different jerky, it's straight up simple, standard flavors/types. They know what they're doing. It's a no frills place, a bit dark and not very modern but this isn't a place to dine. You basically buy your jerky, it gets packaged into clear plastic bags, and you go anywhere you need to go. It's a bit hard to describe the jerky, but it's not super dry or hard like typical ones you would find. It's slightly moist and juicy because of whatever glaze they add. The spicy beef jerky isn't super spicy, it's quite mild with a pinch of sweet. Til today, the taste has been mostly the same, the store vibe hasn't changed a bit. I feel a lot of old-school family owned places are slowly disappearing from Chinatown so I hope this place stays for as long as possible. read more

Excellent traditional Chinese beef and pork jerky! Worth venturing off the beaten path for authentic tasty treats!

There hasn't been much change since I was a little kid when my father use to bring home a clear bag full of jerked meat. Yes! I had a taste of these back in the late 1980s. Every once in a while I will still stop in to get a pound. What else hasn't changed? Those same huge bins (which still look clean and clear) or the fact that the place is unseen as a modern business. Meaning it still has the old world Chinese practice of just being known without marketing or displaying of such (unless you can read Chinese). The only way is to go in and take a look in the bins and the sign of prices over the bins (order by pound, half or quarter of a pound). It's by word of mouth and being known around that gets them customers. Well that and they have been serving great jerky. How does the jerky taste? Well, besides the fact that the place is unassuming as a business, I give them 4.5 for their jerky. It is literally some of the best (I hesitate sometimes using the word "best" because people use it too rhetorically) jerky I have tasted but that doesn't mean I have tried many, maybe it's just the uniqueness of a jerky shop doing it the old Chinese ways tasting different from the common jerky taste. The pork is thin like a slice of bacon. It is translucent. There is a glimmer that shines off of it. It's a bit chewy yet not overly (remember the chewiness comes from being dried of it's moisture). The fact that they make it where it's not overly chewy makes it good textured quality jerk. And it's fresh as can be (depends if you're lucky to get them when they make them), not the type stored in bags. The beef is more dry and meaty. You can taste the fibers of meatiness in the beef. Both version has a sweetness and spiciness. There's one that is hot-spicier and the ones that are milder. They are also closed on Mondays, as I am told. read more

When we lived back East, this was THE place to go for fresh beef jerky so it was no wonder that whenever we visit, a stop here is a must. The store is a bit difficult to find as there's not much of a sign so make sure to have good directions and if you do not want to be disappointed, place an order beforehand especially if you want more than a pound. My dad found that out when he stopped this past weekend only to find out that they didn't have enough. But once he found out my dad was leaving to go back to Boston that afternoon and would be flying back to CA the following day, they told him to come back in 2 hours and they would make a fresh batch and fresh it was as it was still warm when he picked it up. Probably the most torn I've been trying to write a Yelp review. Disclaimer: this was the jerky place my family has always been going to, so my history with Ping's/Jung's goes back probably twenty years or more. The jerky for this extended period of time is just as I remember from back then, and has never changed. Likewise, the appearance of buying jerky out of someone's living room has also never changed. "Ambiance" is clearly not their priority and I've accepted that that's just how they roll. Now, I'm not sure this was always the case, but it's impossible to be sure you can get to this place and get your supply. It's not just because they'll run out of stuff. It's because they don't answer their phone (in some trips past, it was possible to phone in and reserve your order before they got cleaned out for the day), and they have no hours posted, nor seem to follow any real schedule at all, really. So, we burned a trip over there on a Monday to find out that they aren't open at all on Mondays, then we stopped in on a Tuesday at 10/10:30ish and found them closed, only to stop by at 11:30 to find them suddenly open for business. Exasperating. And also costly, as someone else pointed out: the classic sweet beef jerky is $30/lb, which is a bit more expensive compared to Malaysian Beef Jerky and Ling Kee, not sure about New Beef King. But hey, I believe this is a piece of history right here, and honestly I feel that at any time I could come back to NYC and find this place closed up for good - we've tried the other places and they aren't like Ping's at all. That said, if you're lucky to find them open and still stocked, give it a try. You don't have to go in for a pound, but do make sure you've got some cash ready. read more

Every time I go down to NYC, my hubby still ask me to help me buy some of their beef jerky. For me, I hate going into their store. I guess is a family owned business but they need to smile more instead of looking so depress. Sigh! read more

There's something very reassuring about Chinatown shops like Ping's. The wall tiles, the windows, the old plastic jugs where each of the jerkies sits with its sliced brethren waiting to be dispatched to its battlefield of consumption (i.e. my mouth) - they've all clearly been used for long times which speaks to the Chinese mentality of using something until it breaks or keeping it until you absolutely must change. Each time I come in here, something is slightly different. Like the neon sign that wasn't on last time, or the desktop and new monitor from costco which the owner's kids are probably using when they're in the shop with the elders. But the one thing that doesn't change is the meat. The jerky - beef or pork. I never go for the spicy, cause the sweet is just plain dandy. It's chewy but soft and you don't feel all gluttonous after devouring a bag. At $20 a pound, it ain't cheap. But it sure is delish. It's cash only too - like most shops in Chinatown. Caution - eat it fast though, cause if you let it sit, it WILL mold (it's moist, after all) - and if you freeze or fridge it, the dryness will forever alter the flavor! read more
