I can only speak from the standpoint of a hockey Mom. We visited for a weekend of games. Plenty of parking! Bar/food on site. Pro shop on site! Stadium seating in front of rink. Tables, chairs, stools on the upper level. We found this facility to be much warmer and didn't need our coats/blankets. If you're a photographer I highly recommend the upper level. I was able to snap 150 shots that are excellent quality! (Just play with your settings; I found TV mode to be best-adjust white balance and ISO) I am by no means a professional, but I love taking sports photos. And these were some of my best! Such a clear view of the rink/players! I am not a fan of how they choose the refs for games. I'll keep that off Yelp...so much I want to say! Rink is NHL sized so slightly smaller than Olympic but still great. Went on a public session during the day on purpose so that there would be less people. Ice was clean but is weirdly hard? We are regulare here as a grandson and granddaughter play on hocky teams on the rink. This snack bar has really come along over the last few years and is now a very nice operation. They sell beer and wine along with soft drinks and they have recently expanede their menu. It is far more than junk food. French fries are excellent. They are, I think, the twice-fried variety whereby the fries are lightly cooked in oil and then recooked to bring on a well cooked, lightly colored, potatoe that taste very good. You can do the ketchup thing or have some ranch dressing or BBQ sauce with them. I had a hamburger ($14) and it was well worth the price as it included fries. The meat is 100% beef and is a thick patty, cooked well, but now charred or overdone. It was really good. We had all five of our grandchildren with us and they gobbled down quite a variety of food. The bartenders are friendly and you can pay with card or cash and they will run a tab for you, as they did for us. And you never miss the hockey taking place on the ice 10 feet away. read more

I signed up for a men's league wednesday night league and paid $530 about somewhere around that. After skating 2 times (2 weeks, 1 game per week) I had to quit and move back to my home town. I told the captain of the team about it and he said I would get a refund if they had found someone to replace me. I later found out someone did replace me and when i confronted the owner or captain of the team about my money back he said he wouldn't give it back. I dropped out before the deadline where you can't add new players so there was no reason to not refund my money. I even took off the amount I technically paid for the 2 times I did in fact play. When I then confronted pineville ice house they said they could do nothing about it and it was a civil matter which I understood but the owner of the team was not connecting me or giving me my money he said he would refund. The only thing I would say I had an issue about from pineville is not helping me more trying to get the money back. I'm 18 years old and I know I made the decision to join the league and everything but I left within the deadline and was told I could get my money back and I got ghosted and didn't get anything back in return. I moved from 850 miles north of pineville for college and $500 so dollars is a lot for someone like me who has to pay for college and room and board and whatever expenses i need for college. Pineville could have at least pressured the owner of the team more to return the money back to me. When talking to the hockey director he was kind and was willing to help but the most he did was call him and tell him to return it. My niece and nephew were in town for two weeks. With a teen and pre-teen it was important to find a few summer activities that would get them moving while also being Covid safe. Taking them to skate for an hour or so at Pineville Ice House was the perfect midday activity. The staff was polite, the process was streamlined from start to finish, and we weren't overcrowded. If you are still taking precautions and wearing masks it was perfect for a summer activity since our face coverings kept us cool while on the ice. With a good low rate of $7.50 for entry and $2.50 for skate rental this is arguably the best option for a first-time ice skater in the Charlotte area. The Pineville Ice House, as it is better known, is great fun with the kids, a group, family, for a birthday party and most other stuff you think of doing at your standard roller-rink except the kicker is that it's on ice! I've made it here a number of times including once with a big group for a [dangerous] game called broom ball. In broom ball, the players clad only in their everyday clothes and without ice skates, go out on the ice with a broom-like stick to swat at a ball until makes it into the other team's goal. All the while you spend most of your time trying not to throw yourself off balance with a misplaced swing and land yourself in the hospital with a concussion. But hey! This review isn't meant to trash ice skating. Only the futile and foolish game of broom ball. Nonetheless, PIH is a good starting point for you up-and-coming figure skaters out there. The main advice I have is to just check their website as they have some oddly specific hours during which they are open to the public for skating. Watch out for the kids and remember to dress warm and always fall with closed hands or you'll take home less fingers than you brought. read more

This skate house is awesome. I visited over the weekend to see my boyfriend play a pickup hockey game and I really enjoyed it. We arrived there around 10:00 pm when it wasn't very crowded. The place seemed to be used a lot by local children in the earlier hours for entertainment purposes. There's also music that plays, pretty modern usually top 40. There is a bar, a place to eat skate rental and a skate pro shop which is awesome. The staff seemed to be really nice and helpful. The condition of the rink is also in good shape. There's a balcony overlooking the skate rink for a better view of the games but also bleachers around the rink. The restrooms seem to be in good shape. Toilet paper and hand soap are always restored so I haven't had trouble with that. Overall it's a great place to take your children but also great for those hockey/ice skating enthusiasts out there. read more

This first visit is likely my last. The music selection was poor and even after I asked if the playlist could be changed to something more kid friendly, there were still curse words going out over the sound system. I can handle an unedited version of Gold Digger, but when a group of 9 year olds hear it, that's an entirely different story. When two more inappropriate songs follow that, it becomes a bigger problem. The place is a little rundown, with wet floors in various spots around the rink, to uneven flooring that makes walking in skates harder than it already is, to uneven ice on the rink, this place is unlikely to survive much longer. This may have just been an off night, but doubt I return to confirm that. The beer in the bar was good, but that wasn't by their doing. read more

What a breath of fresh air after a horrible experience at Extreme! I'd first like to comment on the review from Jim B. "The blades were dull and rounded over like an old butter knife". Well, skates have two blades per skate so the butter knife analogy makes zero sense as does your review. Second, "the left blade was bent to the right at a 10 degree angle". Did you have a protractor in your fanny pack to make those measurements? Maybe (actually def) seem to be one of those people who blame their inadequacies on others and things beyond your control. Dude, you suck at skating! It's YOUR fault. Overall, while the facilities are not as "country clubish" as Extreme, but, the whole atmosphere at the Ice House is a lot more positive and energetic than Extreme. It really is true how a few miserable people at the top of something (Extreme) can pollute it from the top down. This is NOT the case in Pineville. I will only come here from now on to free skate, play hockey, AND for private skating lessons for my family. As far as the pro shop goes, I have had my blades sharped at BOTH locations and the Ice House does a way better job. Rumors have it that the Extreme guy does it while drinking which makes sense after I have had to have his sharpening jobs fixed numerous times before I discovered the Ice House which has done a perfect job, every time. Save yourself some money, live a positive life, and skate at the Ice House. read more

This was my first time here and I came with a group of people. It was pretty crowded for a cold random Friday night in February. The rink is about the same size as a roller skating rink. The ice wasn't very smooth even after they cleaned it and they cleaned it about every hour. There are no bells and whistles with this place, it's pretty much a rink with bleachers and benches on the outside of the rink. A teenager was the "DJ", so the music was all over the place. They do have a bar and it's nice and warm inside the bar. They have an assortment of beer and wine. The food is pretty good. My friend ordered the mozzarella cheese sticks and they were quite good. The funnel cake fries were good too. There are no lockers so you can't store coats, bags and purses inside the building. My advice to Pineville Ice House would be to have an adult skate night once a month. It would be nice to freely skate without fear of knocking down a kid. read more

The Winter Olympics inspired us to hit the ice rink. I'm no Michelle Kwan but I've been on the ice a time or two. This rink just didn't blow my mind. We arrived right when the open skate time started (check their website for the schedule). The entry process is pretty simple. Walk to the building, pay your money ($10 for admission and skate rental) and grab your rental skates at the next window. The negatives... I was disappointed by the ice quality and the rental skates. The surface of the ice was pretty rough and needed a serious resurfacing. The rental skates were extremely dull. Yes, I know that they are rentals but it would have been nice if the blades had a decent edge. I also wish that they would have set up some cones inside the rink. This would have provided better separation for general skaters (the people that just want to skate circles) from the more experienced/technical skaters (the people that want to spin and jump). I've been to rinks that used the cones and it provided a better experience for all skaters. It would have been helpful if all skaters were aware of skating etiquette... There were also a few times that I found myself having to dodge people going the wrong direction!! The positives... They serve beer and wine!! If it wasn't so early in the day, I would have partaken. The employees that I interacted with seemed friendly enough. Pineville Ice House doesn't have a lot of competition, which means they really don't need to change much to stay in business. If you live in Charlotte and you want to go ice skating this will probably be where you head. read more

Love the Pineville Ice House! I have been about 3 times now and each experience has gone well. It gets rather busy so keep this in mind when choosing a time to visit. Admission is $7, skate rental is $3, and so is helmet rental. There is a DJ who plays cool songs that boost the mood and atmosphere, as well as strobe-like lights. The Pineville Ice House is kinda crappy. There is no lobby. You walk in and you're in the ice rink, so there isn't a warm place to hang out or put on your skates. Let me first start off by letting everyone know I'm originally from Minnesota. The Ice House is a fairly average rink that maintains their ice well. The ice makes all the difference in my opinion. While the skate sharpening may be better than the "other" Charlotte rink (which is incredibly important if you're renting skates), but I'd have to recommend bringing your own skates in the first place. Yes, I know most people won't have their own...but rental skates in general are like wearing someone else's shoe...and skates...unlike shoes...are hard and not very pliable. So prepare for sore feet if you rent. I found the employees to be very helpful and knowledgeable. I had fun chatting with them and found a couple from my neck-of-the-woods. The only thing I would have liked to see different is the spaciousness of the place. I know there's not much that can be done about this, but on comparison (yes, from Minnesota...as everyone grows up playing hockey there), the Ice House is a bit cramped. Overall, I liked the Ice House...so don't let the three stars fool you. The atmosphere is nice...the smell...oh how I love the smell...lol...as some of you may say ewwww...what's that smell. There's nothing like the smell of hockey! I recommend the Ice House. It's a great date, a fun family place, a great place for kids to go, and something different for those of you that have never laced-up before. read more

The Pineville Icehouse is geared for hockey only. The public skate times are too short and too expensive. I tried renting skates, 3 pairs and no luck. The first pair had laces that were cobbled together from 2 different skates. The blades were dull and rounded over like an old butter knife. The second pair was better, but the left blade was bent to the right at a 10 degree angle making it impossible to skate. The last pair was a bit better, but wholly unusable. This wasn't just my experience, this was the experience of all 7 of us in the group. All the skates had been abused and hadn't seen a sharpener or any maintenance in quite some time. We decided to stick with Extreme Ice in Indian Trail. It is a bit of a drive, but a professional operation start to finish. New skates, longer skate times and a pro shop that caters to other skaters, not just hockey. read more

This was my first time here and I was not impressed. At all. The entire facility was dirty and their equipment was terrible. They were out of my size so I was forced to wear a size too large. The skates are extremely old and all the shoelaces are broken or have knots in them. Also, they did not limit the number of people inside and it was extremely crowded. While I was there, one person smashed their head in the center of the rink and one girl broke her arm. Don't waste your time. read more

As soon as I walked in the staff was not friendly. This was my first time visiting this ice arena. I was not notified of the schedule nor was I told the different times the ice arena is open to the public. I payed for my skates and was only able to skate for 25 minutes before I was told to get out from the ice arena because the session for the public was over and another session of skaters were about to start their practice. It was very upsetting that I wasn't told the specific time I had left to skate. The employee at the front was not being professional when I notified him of my concern. Instead of apologizing, the manager stated that there was nothing he could do and that there was a sign practically on the ceiling, stating the skating times. He kept arguing with me and was super rude and unprofessional. Showing empathy and remorse is important in dealing with customer complaints. I excepted better. read more

Like the other reviewers have mentioned there are two ice rinks in Charlotte, and after spending a couple of days at Extreme Ice Center (the crappy ice rink) , I HAVE to give Pineville FIVE STARS! The staff at Pineville are helpful and genuinely nice! Actually, the reason why we like Pineville so much is because of the staff! We have only encountered the owner once, but he seemed more "classy" than the owner of Extreme Ice Center. The food is concession style, which is basic, but not overpriced like the "competition". The skate sharpening is EXCELLENT!! And the "learn-to-skate" is great for the little ones! read more

We have an 11 year old who has been playing ice hockey for 3 years now. We appreciate the instruction and competition that the house league offers. We are not ready for travel hockey and the commitment that takes with other children playing different sports. The Ice House also offers great summer camps and food! I have played roller hockey at Breakaway Sports and ice hockey at Extreme Ice and both places are so much better than the Ice House.

All of our family skates, and we have used both rinks iin the metro area, but pineville is the best. All of the employees are skaters and have a great attitude of"giving back" to the younger skaters. This means the world to a parent of young figure and hockey skaters. Additionally the skating instuctors and hockey coaches all take the time to learn our chidrens' names, you feel you are more than just a number at Ice House. Very affordable programs and the ice surface is very nice.The current owner has done a lot of upgrades and renovations to the facility. The pro shop has everything you need and Rick is a jack of all trades and the best blade sharpener I've ever worked with. One last thing, a great place to see college hockey, it is the home rink of Johnson and Wales, but can see UNCC, Appalacian, etc. A great place for a good time! read more

Warning to all who support or are thinking about supporting this facility. My wife was injured while talking to another customer by a child who ran over my wifes foot in the skate rental/restroom area. Apparently there is not a rule that says ice skates should only be worn in the ice skating area and during crowded times they allow people (children) wearing blades to intermingle with people not wearing blades. My wifes foot was run over by a child in ice skates and she had to go to the emergency room. Since then she has had to be seen by another doctor to have her toe examined and lost her large toenail. The facility manager I spoke to is unwilling to help with any medical bills as he is hiding behind the signs they have posted in the facility and hidden on their website as they are not responsible for any injuries while in their facility. I can understand the skate at your own risk policy but talking to other customers at some distance from the ice should be a "safe" activity. They are not cooperating at all, even though their employees filled out an incident report when it happened. I would think that this should be a warning for all in this facility that you do not even have to be "participating" in skating to get injured in this hazardly run facility. read more

Finally found a place to skate down South. This place is nice, not too bad. Kids actually don't have to pay to skate or rent them either when they signed up for lessons. In NY, they make you pay the open skate daily admission and also to rent the skates so I'm impressed that they don't here. Workers are very nice and helpful. The only thing I didn't like was the pro shop seemed very expensive for hockey sticks but I guess there isn't much of a choice down here because you can't get equipment anywhere else. I come to the ice house frequently. I live right down the street so it's very convenient for me. I play at the ice house and all the staff that works here is amazing and all very nice to be around. If anybody needs help or gets hurt they are there to help right away. I highly recommend the ice house as a family place and a very fun place to be at an hang out. read more
