I was visiting Portland and had heard many say that Pine State Biscuits was a place that had to be checked out- so, yup, it happened. The inside had a nice feel with its dark wood gently lit up by the large windows along the entrance wall. The dining area is a bit narrow, but there's bar seating, in addition to tables. There's also a large covered outdoor area to eat at if you'd like. The service was basic, and you do have to bus your own table. The two sandwiches we ordered: The Reggie: described as having fried chicken, bacon, and cheese topped with your choice of sausage or mushroom gravy. I got the sausage. Holy cow this sandwich was huge, and so good. Who is Reggie and how did he inspire such a great sandwich?! It was too messy to eat with the hands, so I used a fork and knife. I like a little kick so I used one of the hot sauces at the condiment bar (I think it was their house one). It added that oomph that I needed. My sandwich barely had any bacon, though, so that made me a little sad. I liked that there was enough to bring leftovers home in a container, though. Bbq Biscuit: described as pulled pork with Carolina style bbq sauce and house slaw. Well... our sandwich needed more pork, the sauce was so thin and very tangy, and the slaw was also super tangy. I think this would've been better with some kind of thicker sauce as well, to tie it together... or maybe a different /creamy slaw. Not too happy with this one. Overall, I really enjoyed our experience here and would come back whenever I'm in town to either get The Reggie again, or to try other options. It is pricy though, so keep that in mind. read more

Lots of reviews and write ups and I can see why as the menu pops of hot button key words that offer promise of deliciousness. Sadly, the supposed star, the biscuits, are flavorless and detract from whatever they hold as the accompaniment. No point in getting the biscuits. The chicken and other meats were decent but not standouts in any way. On a positive note: wonderful blueberry pancake and real syrup. Hash browns had exceptional potato taste, like the old days! The menu is dominated by biscuits and everything you can think to do with them. Smothered with gravy or forming a sandwich, this place lives up to its name. The country theme leaves room for a southern influence- sweet tea, shrimp and grits, or a side of greens are all options. So what is a gluten-avoiding diner doing here? After overcoming my desire for biscuits and gravy, I ordered hash browns with pulled pork, at the suggestion of the cashier. That's another thing, while you can definitely sit down and eat, you order at the bar first. The choices are on the wall, as well as on little menus available as you walk in. The place is saved from being too much by the music - I definitely heard Nirvana singing Smells Like Teen Spirit and the rest of the music was equally modern. So, how was the food? Good. It was little dry, but it normally should have cheeses or gravy or eggs - all of which were off limits to me. The flavor was good. The pulled pork a little spicy F very good. The slaw was more like lightly pickled veggies and excellent. EXCELLENT. Overall, this is a great place for standard American diet and has lots of vegetarian and even vegan options. But, if gluten, dairy, or eggs are an issue - I would come again with others that weren't limited but I might not come here alone. read more

First off, this place is extremely charming and cozy; there's limited seating inside, but a small patio towards the back. I ordered The Reggie and will say that the biscuit is perfectly fluffy, and the mushroom gravy is to die for. It's flavorful, rich, and hits the spot. The mushroom gravy was very flavorful so if you are a fan of mushrooms, the mushroom gravy is the one to choose. We always stop by Pine State Biscuits when we are in Portland and are never disappointed. The latest time I went I got the chatfield. The biscuit is both fluffy and substantial. The apple butter is the perfect smear of sweetness contrasting with the substantial and juicy and crispy chicken. Also had a seasonal pop tart which was totally delicious, if not really handholdable. The Pros: lots of seating! The food is out quite quickly, regardless of the long line, the desserts my goodness are they delicious! We tried the snickerdoodle cookie and the Marion Berry, sweet corn poptart. BOMB. Their gravy is just beyond amazing! Probably one of my favorite gravy here in Portland. Great breakfast sandwiches definitely have to take half of it home so it's technically paying for two! The Cons: I would say this place is not necessarily for tipping, just because you have to wait in line to place your order, you have to find your own table , you have to clean up after yourselves. You serve your own water or drip coffee. So technically, there's no service other than them taking your order behind the counter and them bringing your order. Plus when you're about to pay it's over the 20% options on the system. So the tipping the machine asks for is way over the normal rate. So it's a place I wouldn't tip as tipping culture has gotten out of hand. The last little con is there was no soap at all in the restroom... but I understand things could be busy but I can't imagine how many people were in there. I got the Reggie deluxe! It was basically biscuit sandwich with egg, bacon and gravy. Think of it as a glorified McDonald biscuit sandwich. The gravy was good especially with their secret hot sauce. However, the biscuit was kinda of hard. Though it was fresh, I thought it was be softer. I also ordered the sweet tea and it was really good and not overbearingly sweet I was here on a Saturday and around noon. There was a line but since I was solo I was able to get a table for one. You do have to wait for your food but they immediately set their expectation. There was plenty of place with additional outside. However, I went on a busy time. Stopped by here on our way back from Multnomah Falls for lunch. Ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, The Reggie, The Chatfield, Fried Green Tomatoes, and a brisket biscuit. The chicken pot pie was delicious. The filling seemed to have been composed of their shiitake gravy and pieces of fried chicken which was seasoned well. The crust was tasty, but as a personal preference, I would have liked it to be a bit more crispy. The fried chicken with both the Chatfield and Reggie were moist, well seasoned, and tender. Though the apple jam was good on the Chatfield, I preferred the sausage gravy with the Reggie. The biscuits on both were tender and delicious. Unfortunately the fried green tomato, though good, was not terribly special. I probably will skip it next time. read more

We tried to go on Thursday but the store was closed due to mechanical difficulties so we went to Tin Shed a few blocks away instead. After having their biscuits, we were underwhelmed when we finally got Pine State on Saturday. The highlights were the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, the honey butter on my crispy chicken sandwich and the apple pop tart that I ate the next day. Pine State is a order first and then seat yourself establishment. The line often wraps around the block but it does move quickly. Both indoor and outdoor seating. One gender neutral restroom which seems dirty due to the graffiti but is clean. Be cautious when washing your hands as the water runs scalding hot at times but will cool down. read more

This should be a 5 star rating but I had an unfortunate incident where my fingers were burned when being handed my food. The incident: A server with green hair brought my food to the table. She handed me the plate and did not give me any warning regarding the high temperature of the plate. The plate was so hot, it triggered my reflex to instantly let go of the plate. The waitress was still gripping the plate at least so it didn't fall on the table but she just said a quiet "sorry" and left. No warning or willingness to get ice. My hand was burned a bit and ultimately had to rest my hand on some ice for the entire meal. I appreciate how fresh and hot the food is but there was a lack of professionalism and hospitality in this experience which makes me reconsider recommending this restaurant to other which is unfortunate because I had an otherwise great experience. A more pronounced apology and willingness to take initiative in grabbing some ice would have amended this poor interaction. The food- honestly one of the best brunch places in Portland. It's unique in the freshness of the biscuits and the variety of combinations available. The chicken pot pie was also super fresh and delicious!
