Build Your Own with Pulled Pork and both gravy varieties is my new goto.
Andrew A.

"Build Your Own" is my new goto. Pulled pork, fried egg, cheese (sometimes), both gravy types. Heaven. Their new homemade hot sauce is worthy. Staff is usually very nice. A top 3 Portland spot for sure.

Was visiting from out of town with two friends on a rainy Sunday morning. Parking was, of course, on the street but we had no issue finding a spot in one of the nearby neighborhoods. There was surprisingly no line or wait when we walked in. We ordered at the counter and then sat ourselves. There isn't much seating indoors, maybe 4 or 5 booth tables and additional bar-style seating, so we sat outside which was fully covered and had heaters. I ordered the chicken friend steak with biscuit and mushroom gravy. One friend ordered a biscuit breakfast sandwich (I believe the Reggie) and a homemade red velvet pop tart. The other friend ordered the biscuit with mushroom gravy. Everything was amazing. So flavorful and so comforting. Portions are also pretty big and worth the price. We ended up having to take the pop tart home because we were so full and didn't end up eating it until the following morning but even then it was still delicious. Will definitely be back!

I've heard good things about this place, so I gave it a try. Firstly, the space is not well organized due to being too small to meet the number of customers. Ordering was a little chaotic, as was getting seated and finding utensils. I'm willing to accept chaos if the food is awesome. Was the food awesome? It bordered on it, but couldn't quite make the leap. It didn't lose its grip, and plummet into the chasm of mediocrity, but it dangled with its legs flailing for a bit. "The Reggie", their basic chicken biscuit, was a bit dry. It really could have used a little bit more gravy. The chicken was good, and the breading was excellent. The biscuit itself was the dry part. There was too much of it for the amount of gravy. Now, I'm not from the South. I've only been dabbling in Southern Cuisine for a few years, so I fully admit that I may be missing the point. The chicken fried steak was decent. Smothered with their delicious gravy with an open faced biscuit on the side, it was the stand out meal at the table. The Wedge is interesting. I may have to order one myself to get more of a taste of it. The brisket was a little tough, though. The fries were decent. The cheesy fries were lackluster (a little cheddar melted in the center), but the Cajun fries had a nice spice, and they weren't afraid to heap it on. While it was not the best chicken and biscuit I've had, it certainly was not the worst, but the chicken fried steak stood out from the rest.

Spicy pimento cheese with egg

Never disappoints. Great biscuits, flaky and buttery with a nice crunch on the outside. Tried the special, a spicy pimento cheese sandwich with fried chicken, hot honey, jalapeños, and added an egg. A terrific way to kick off the day. Good coffee too. I like the thick mugs that keep it hot.

Wow. WOW. WOW! So good. I'd been wanting to go here for over a year, and finally made it yesterday. Amazing biscuits and the most creative and delicious biscuit sandwiches. I can't think of words to adequately describe the McIsley. It's a biscuit sandwich with an amazingly tasty fried chicken breast, stone ground mustard and the best pickles I've ever had. They serve this with a ribbon of honey around the plate and this just put it over the top. My dining companion had the Moneyball - biscuit and gravy, with an over easy egg atop it. They offer a choice of sausage or vegan gravy; they had the sausage and unlike the gravy at some places, you could actually see sausage chunks throughout. Really quick delivery of our food. A very clean, comfortable place. On-street parking only.

Homemade biscuits, tasty toppings, and a fantastic staff! Shoutout to the employee who gave us the free mini sauce containers of pimento and apple jam when we swung by in the afternoon for some extra toppings (we had ordered from them in the morning). Perhaps they just didn't want to deal with the little charge, but it made our day! It took a fork to eat the chicken biscuit with gravy, but I would certainly get any of their dishes again! (We also got the brisket biscuit which was divine!)

Some places serve food. Pine State Biscuits serves comfort. The food here is incredible, filling, and absolutely satisfying. I left very full and very happy. The space is on the smaller side if you're planning to eat inside, and since seating is open, tables can fill up quickly. The staff are attentive and welcoming as soon as you walk up to the counter, which makes the experience smooth even when it's busy. Ordering ahead is a great option, especially if you're grabbing food to go. This is a great spot for family, friends, or a casual brunch date. It may not be traditionally romantic, but when the food speaks to your heart and soul like this... it kind of works anyway. Come hungry, plan to be full, and don't be surprised if you're already thinking about your next visit.

Fluffy cake like biscuit - moist Marion berry pop tart - mmmm puff pastry tart Chicken fried steak legit - not that ground beef Reggie We like the sausage gravy better than the mushroom gravy (but both are solid) We came here hungry and we did indeed divulge! We aren't biscuit snobs so maybe we can't tell what's a "legit" biscuit or not, but the food was good and tasty. Bottom line: would hit this place up again

This was my 3rd time here in 6 months. Had to bring my gkids to try this place now they know how delicious biscuits and gravy are.

It's been awhile since I have been to this location. You orders first from the counter and then find a place to sit (similar with the other locations). We just ordered The Reggie Deluxe, Grits, and Hash Ups (add brisket) to shared. I really enjoyed the Hash Ups with the brisket as the meat was super tender that you could cut it with a fork. The Reggie Deluxe was still a classic and tasted like it always does. We were lucky to beat the rush.

Blueberry corn pancakes- so good!

So hungry from an early flight we stopped by after flying into PDX. We called ahead to see if there was much of a wait/ line and was told 10 or so minutes but it was a lot faster than that which was great. Service was very friendly. We shared Make Your Own biscuit sandwich and the blueberry corn pancakes-- very good! The biscuit was delicious and very large. We had two pancakes rather than the three (didn't know this was an option until the employee offered). It was plenty. We had a side sausage. The pancakes were so good! Hot and delicious. They come with syrup and a lemon wedge which really balances out the sweet from the syrup and corn. We sat outside with heat lamps. It was clean and cozy.

Food: 3/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Went here for brunch with a friend, and it was my first time, so I was pretty excited to try it out. The place has both inside and outside seating, and there are plenty of options to choose from on the menu. I ordered the chicken fried steak plate, and woww the portion size was HUGE. The only issue was the gravy to meat ratio it felt so off, and I had to order extra gravy. However, it was $3 for a tiny sauce sized container, which felt a bit ridiculous. We also tried the fried mac n cheese bites ($8). They were super oily, and neither my friend nor I enjoyed them. The beignets ($4) were also a let down they weren't fluffy or soft like I expected. Instead, they were dense and tasted like they had been refried more than once. Would not recommend. Of course, eating here is an indulgent, heavy meal, and I did enjoy the biscuit and gravy a lot. The fried chicken and steak were good at the beginning, but it got a bit tough to eat after a while. The area is really nice for dining and catching up with friends, and I'd be open to coming back to try something different from the menu next time.

Kevin P.

I don't really think much of a place where they're known of biscuit sandwiches but every Yelp recommendation showed this place. Luckily for me and right around the corner was this location and zero wait. The Reggie with sausage gravy--wow. Crispy juicy chicken and my god this was so good. By itself it really is a full meal. Looking around lots of people just ordered the biscuit entree by itself. Where they're missing out though is the has browns! 10/10 for seasonings and flavor! Actually I think I'd come here for those instead. Nevertheless this place must be on your radar for something seemingly so simple but extremely well made. Inside and outside it's just cozy; lots of single seating and picnic table seating for a nice conversation under the beautiful PNW weather.

First off, what a stylish, refined-yet-casual atmosphere. Love the layout of the restaurant; it was bright and spacious. They have a variety of tables and booths for various party sizes, plus outdoor dining! All the staff were smiling, kind, and friendly! Our food and drinks came out very quickly. We ordered a good share of items since we wanted to try a variety of things! From the happy hour menu, we got the Boudin Balls and Romaine Wedge Salad. From their dinner menu, we ordered the Virginia Ham Deviled Eggs (upgraded), Local Fried Green Tomatoes, Yellow Grits, Crawfish Etouffee, and Chicken and Waffles Two Pieces. It was my first time trying most of these things. My favorite app was the fried green tomatoes; they weren't wet, were nicely breaded, and were well seasoned. All the fried items were perfectly fried! The eggs, since we upgraded to trout roe, were very salty. The boudin balls were dense, savory, and meaty--not my personal favorite. I enjoyed trying the grits, but my favorite was the crawfish! It was sweet and savory, the sauce was a good consistency, and the portion was generous. The chicken and waffles were fabulous--I can see why they're popular! I don't normally eat this, but it was the perfect mix of savory and sweet; I loved the sweet potato too! Screen Door is a popular spot in Portland, and I can see why! It's a must-visit for visitors and tourists. You'll find it in the Pearl District, off Couch Street.

I did go for brunch, ordered the "famous" chicken and waffles, and went to the Pearl District location. After following all of the instructions of everyone who swears by Screen Door, I still think it's just mediocre (the one thing I really like here is the catfish). I will say that the Pearl District location is a vibe - the restaurant decor is super cool, and I'd go there daily to grab drinks if I lived nearby. The service is also great, everyone is very kind and attentive. Although the food isn't my jam, I will tell you that it is one of the most popular spots in PDX - if you decide to go, bring some extra cash and shop at the cute stores next door while waiting to be seated. I do recommend going to Screen Door, but do it for the experience, don't expect the best southern food you've ever had.

Giving a 2-star because of a mixed experience. Hopefully my review can help anyone who comes here…read morehave a better experience than we did. First, I'll start with the positive: Tacos de Pescado were quite good, and perhaps the only thing worth coming for here. They were seasoned very nicely and had great texture and appearance. Absolutely the highlight here. The only thing that could have improved them was just a bit of sweetness in the chipotle mayo, since the sauce was a little bit unbalanced. But they were still very tasty. However, there were a couple things that we experienced that really ruined our experience: (1) Price gouging/stinginess (2) The bitchy hostess I totally get the 2026 times that we're in and that places need to operate on tighter budgets. You want me to seat myself when times are busy? Sure. Go up to the bar to order? Alright. Refill my own water? Meh, not a big deal. But there is a way to do those things without treating customers like pests. We showed up shortly after 3pm and this place was COMPLETELY empty, other than the hostess and bartender. We saw the sign that said to seat ourselves, so we did. Hostess came over and just told us to look over the menus and go to the bar when we're ready to order. I tried to ask her for any recommendations, but her body language clearly said she just wanted to walk away. Then she just went over to the bar, and chatted with coworkers. Then one other couple showed up and I watched the same thing happen -- she just kept looking for the first opportunity to step away and go back to doing nothing. Fine, I am capable of having a good time without her, except the menu was sort of confusing about pricing for their signature "machete" quesadillas; they allow you to order a build-your-own with up to 4 different toppings, but the menu has a weird diagram showing the quesadilla spilt into 4 pieces, and each additional topping had another $4 charge to the order. I called her over to ask if the additional toppings were added to the whole machete, or just a portion of it. She said that any toppings you order are basically substitutions, and will be added IN PLACE of existing toppings. I clarified "So the amount of food is the same, and you're just charging extra for me to choose a different topping?" She confirmed yes. "So why do you guys offer a build-your-own option and then charge 2x-4x more for the same amount of food?" She got a bitchy attitude and just said "I don't know, that's just the way the chef does it," and walked away. So I just ordered a machete that was 1/2 chorizo and 1/2 steak. It makes zero sense to me that I would be charged less to order a steak machete instead of steak on one half and chicken or pork on the other half. It's the exact same amount of food. It's not like they let you combine toppings together or anything -- they literally just cut the machete into different sections and give you one filling. By the way, turns out the machete was 100% not worth ordering anyway, which is disappointing considering that this is their signature dish here. The tortillas were dry and bland, the cheese was rubbery, and the fillings were totally underwhelming. Clearly just some giant batch of meats made a couple days ago that get reheated to order, so again, not sure why they're so weird about the price-gouging. Even funnier, the menu even says that the fillings are "generous." What a scam. But then things got even worse. When the hostess brought my machete, I noticed that there was literally just one tiny dot of crema on the plate, and there was a red sauce and green sauce in the tiniest, half-filled cups. I immediately brought to her attention that there was no cup for the crema, and asked her if I could please get one. She told me I already had some on the plate, and pointed to the dot. I asked if I could please get more than the "dot," and she promptly informed me she would need to add more charges to my meal if I wanted any more sauces. Just absolutely unbelievable stinginess. Her attitude and the price-gouging completely ruined my experience. And what's worse, is the machete isn't even worth its namesake. Those fish tacos are the only thing worth getting. I hope this helps anyone planning to come here. My recommendation would be to skip this place entirely, but if you insist on coming, just get the tacos, skip the machete, and be prepared for price-gouging.

It had a generous portion of perfectly tender and sweet bulgogi steak that pairs with their melted jack cheese. The gochujang mayo sauce had a subtle and sweet heat, while the fresh kimchi added crunch and slight acidity to balance the rich meat. Elote Tater Tots (5/5): Definitely a creative side dish. The tots were perfectly fried and topped elote style with cotija cheese, pairing well with the smoky chipotle mayo on the side. Logistics Tip: Street parking is surprisingly easy to find in the surrounding area, even on a busy weekend evening. The restaurant has a spacious layout with plenty of seating options both inside and outside. If you're a first-timer, don't hesitate to ask the staff for suggestions, as they're exceptionally warm, welcoming, and passionate about the menu.

Lunch from Lardo! My manager is a huge fan of Lardo and asked us to get our meal from here. The…read morefood was good! We got our meal delivered, so I can't speak much for the ambiance. Though, our food was made quickly and packed with care. Portions seemed good for the pricing! My manager and I got a variety of food to share. We ordered the Korean Pork Shoulder, Beeria Grilled Cheese, Lardo Fries, Hush Puppies, and Tater Tots. My pork shoulder sandwich was divine! The bread got pretty soggy, but there was a decent amount of tender, seasoned meat. The kimchi added spice and texture; I'd recommend it. The fries and tots were fine, nothing special in my opinion. The fries weren't too crispy, but the tots were. I enjoyed the hush puppies and found them pretty dense. My manager enjoyed her sandwich. If you're a sandwich lover, then I recommend trying Lardo. I can see why they're popular! Find them off SE Hawthorne Street.
