Skip this in the summer as the metal slides will surely give you a sunburn. There's a sandbox/sandpit that's covered which we liked - I could sit on the ledge and baby was contained and shielded from the sun. Bathrooms are a huge plus! There's no changing station, but it was nice to have public restrooms right there. Playground floor is sand and wood chips FYI. Plenty of nice grass and ball fields next door. They do have a dog park with a big lake that I'd love to use but, my dog hates to go in the water and that's the majority of the park. From the list below, the thing I use the most is the walking trails. It's a great little trail with doggie pot stops on the way. The first one told me about the importance of marshland, but was hard to read because it was very faded. The second, more solid and legible sign / plaque, gave us a history of how the park got it's name and who she was. The views from this end of the park are nice and you can see the new construction of the Children's Center and the Marina along Lockwood Blvd. Pelicans could be see diving in to the water for breakfast, so we stopped to watch that for a minute. Directly across from the harbor, it mainly consists of an overflow pond, a fishing dock and a couple of benches under the shade of oak trees. You can relax and take in the peacefulness around you, watch the locals fish, or catch a few yourself. You have to park in the private parking lot of the condos just off of Lockwood, but I have never had a problem with this. There is not a lot of room for kids to run around but it is a cool spot to share with bigger kids who are interested in fishing. Overall though it is a great place, especially if you just need to take a minute or two for yourself.

My most recent visit was for two days of volunteer work with my running club, which hosts a race that begins and ends in the park. Cannon Park's most prominent feature is the raised platform with four columns, which are the last remnants of the old Charleston Museum that burned down in 1981. Lately, people have used sidewalk chalk to write inspirational quotes and positive messages on the columns. For dog parents, Cannon Park is the place to go. Your pups will meet plenty of other pups to social with, as this seems like Charleston's token dog park. I'm not sure if dogs are supposed to be off leash in this park or not, but they often are. The park has doggy bags and waste receptacles, but watch your step as not everyone cleans up. I almost slipped stepping into a few holes as well, and I wish the city would give the park some TLC and level those so no one gets hurt. The park has a small playground, which is shaded but the equipment looks like it's seen better days. Although the Charleston City Parks website claims the park has wifi, it is spotty at best, so I wouldn't count on it. If you're hungry or thirsty while in the park, there's a Walgreens and a gas station very close by. This simple park doesn't have a huge tourist draw, which could be a plus. Since it's so close to the hospitals, it's the perfect place to go for a walk for some fresh air and a little escape from the medical community.
