    What a treat! We walked in with not many expectations as there wasn't a lot of diverse reviews and we were astonished! The atmosphere was definitely that of a pub/lounge with cute and cheesy Halloween decorations (I loved it). We were greated very promptly by our server Lindsay and I noticed she knew almost every single persons name who was in there - how awesome is that? It definitely felt like a nice little family restaurant. We ordered the sweet potato fries, and switched the curry mayo to spicy mayo, deep fried pepperoni, and a buffalo chicken wrap. Everything was absolutely tasty and full of flavour. I have never had sweet potato fries as good as theirs! I was so excited and gobbled up all my food that I didn't get to have dessert (all of which were home made). We will definitely be back to have a dessert (or two!).

    The service is ALWAYS slow (I mean like waiting hours), the food is always bad and over priced.

    Had the haddock bits, half was cod not haddock. Very sneaky and cheap. Never going back.

While the roll itself was small, the lobster salad mix was fresh and tasty. While I generally prefer fresh lobster off the shell with melted butter for my lobster rolls, the one I got from the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse was not bad at all. The Caesar salad, on the other hand, was absolutely phenomenal. I love how every piece of lettuce was well covered in the dressing, served with some of the tastiest croutons I've had. I did not expect that at all. The server was friendly. I also really enjoyed the live music.

Even though we knew about where it was, we walked right past the beautiful two-story historic house initially. We knew by taking a look at the website they do not accept reservations, which was fine with us. We were, however, going on a Friday night. On walking into the main entry, that space was packed wall-to-wall. Within a few short minutes, one of the staff greeted us. They don't exactly have a formal wait list here, from what I could tell. The staff member offered us the drinks menu and asked if we'd like to order something while we waited on a table. We ordered up a couple of pints, then looked around for some open space to stand. They have two standing bar rails, one in the main area near the bar itself and another one in the middle dining area. This place has about the most creative layout of booths and tables I've ever seen. They do have an outdoor patio out back, but we didn't take a look at that. They have quite a few very comfy two-person booths around the interior. It appeared the way the wait list worked was that they either have a phenomenal memory, or they actually use the bar tab you open to work like a wait list. It seems to really be more about how many you have in your party, and the exact size of any tables/booths that open up. We might have waited about 30 minutes or so for our table for two up in the front of the main dining room. Every single person on the wait staff here is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. The beer list is great, loaded up with so many good local and Nova Scotia craft beer options. The food menu is what really makes this place special, though. We were on vacation, so we may have a tendency for our eyes to be bigger than our stomachs can handle. There was just so many amazing looking dishes. We started out with a pickle jar, fried taters, and the tomatoes appetizers. I have to say, and my wife agrees, the tomatoes dish was the best of everything we had. Its made up of sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, shallots, capers, and garlic chips. All that is sitting on top of creme fraiche. By the time you're finishing the dish, you start thinking about a straw to finish up that creme fraiche. Good grief, that was so good. Don't pass on the fried taters, though. Those seemed to be mashed potatoes formed into rectangular big fries, cooked almost like panko and served with horseradish sour cream. After all that, we could only muster splitting the deli style chop salad with cold water shrimp on it. Our great waitress talked us into an order of the brown bread, a very soft kind of Irish soda bread I believe. That bread just melts in your mouth. If you decide to venture out to The Narrows, you're in for a total experience. You'll feel like you stepped back in time to a real British pub... the house must be from somewhere around the mid 1800s. Every room is warm and cozy, with beautiful woodwork and curious antiques in all sorts of nooks and crannies. You may have quite a long wait depending on the size of your party and how busy the place is, but trust me... its worth every minute.

    When searching the interwebs for a potential new trivia location, I learned a lot of new things…read moreabout the Woodside Tavern. Other than hosting a monthly trivia night (sorry, not frequent enough for my team), they have a ton of live music (the Gus' Pub of Dartmouth?) and some dabs of South Asian food on their menu, including Nepalese momos. Intrigued, I popped by for lunch while in the area. The expansive space was mostly empty when I showed up on a Monday afternoon, with a couple slot jockeys at the back of the bar. Their stage is at the front, with seating for a few dozen across several tables and booths. Wood paneling, dart boards, and a pool table complete the expected vibe. I was quickly seen to by the warm and welcoming woman working the front of house, and I went with the aforementioned dumplings, as well as their lentil soup to get a little more veg in my meal. The lentil soup came quickly, flanked by a slice of toasted whole wheat bread. It's not traditional, but it is about as telling as the very noticeable menu descriptions like "mild curry" and the "mild" sauce that comes with the momos. There's a lot of hand-holding here, and catering to more delicate palettes. I'm a big fan of dal makhani, although I'm used to it being much thicker, and more of a curry dish than a soup, but this warm and earthy, albeit thinner, version was delicious nonetheless. It didn't pack any of the heat that dal makhanis often do, but I was in Dartmouth's oldest bar, after all. The momos arrived shortly thereafter, with seven large, pleated dumplings in a spiral around a small ramekin of (mild) sauce. The steamed dumplings were tender and moist, with pliable wrappers that held up well. The minced chicken had a punch of flavour from some sauteed onions, and the (mild) tomato and sesame sauce brought a lot of flavour and depth, as I eagerly dunked each momo in it. My next time there had me coming for a mid-week dinner, and I sat in the same spot as before up on the stage and by a window facing Pleasant Street. I ordered up at the bar this time, grabbing a pint of Moosehead and the cheeseburger (with added bacon). It was pretty quiet once again, so the food didn't take long. The menu states that the burger has a hefty 7oz patty, and it was definitely broad and thick, although it had a light, almost meatball-like texture. The cheese wasn't quite as melted as you'd want, but the bacon was nice and crisp, and the toasted bun held up well. Not an award winner, but a satisfying dive bar burger. The accompanying fries were of the crispy coated sort, which I'll give the Woodside a pass for, since they were likely never going to have hand-cut, twice-cooked fries. So they were crisp, and a light seasoning added a little je ne sais quoi. It's cool that the Woodside is mixing up the menu, compared to their dive bar peers, and doing all kinds of live shows, and I look forward to coming back to experience both!

It's slightly off the beaten path, occupying the lower level of the Benjamin Wier House near the corner of Bishop and Hollis. The historic building is the perfect setting for a pub and the plentiful stone, brick and wood transports you away from the contemporary towers that could have been copy and pasted from any city. This truly feels like Halifax. The menu has familiar bar bites and British fare, but is more compact than most of its peers, with about a dozen mains and has as many apps, which lends more confidence into the effort being put into those dishes. Popping over for a pre-holiday lunch with co-workers, I gave in and went for the steak and Guinness pie. Savoury pastries have a special place in my heart (both figuratively and literally with how hearty they are) and I was eager to see what Brown Hound's was like. Despite our moderately-sized group, our food came out in quick order. The pie was doused in a layer of gravy, and came with a side of fries and a smattering of roasted vegetables. The pastry was flaky on top and supple enough below to hold everything together. I appreciated that the chunky tenderloin tips were fork-tender and not at all dry, and the rich Guinness gravy made for a lovely hot mess. I feel like a lot of restaurants have given up on making good hand-cut fries and take the easy way out and get coated fries from their food service provider, and Brown Hound seems to be amongst them. I like them well enough, and they are true to their name, but it seems like a cop out and makes them inedible to people with celiac. A return visit saw my wife and I coming by for dinner on the patio. It wasn't quite as sunny as would have been ideal, but that's a common sentiment in Halifax. It's a nice space in the cul-de-sac/courtyard though, with plenty to take in, from the historic buildings through to the new. This time around, I opted for their house burger, while my wife got their shepherd's pie, and I sipped on a pint of Breton Brewing's strawberry rhubarb sour. Our food came in good time, and we hungrily tucked into our dinners. I really enjoyed their burger! Interestingly, it's a mix of beef and pork, and I'll go out on a limb and assume that's a food cost control effort. I don't mind, and you don't really notice for better or worse, but it does restrict your potential clientele a bit if they don't eat pork, especially since I didn't see an no all-beef option. That all said the patty and its accoutrements tasted great. The jalapeno Monterey Jack cheese was nicely melted and brought a mild, but quite noticeable pop of heat. The bacon was good and crispy, while arugula brought its signature peppery bite. The remaining standard toppings - tomato, onion, and dill pickle - brought some freshness and contrast against the richer items. I was looking forward to the rosemary aioli, but it didn't stand out from the other flavours. The toasted bun held up well against its messy payload. The menu said it was the beer-battered fries for this, but it was a from-frozen, skin-on variety, which while not amazing, were still decently crispy and solved my aforementioned accessibility issue with the beer-battered ones. My wife's shepherd's (technically cottage since it was beef and pork, and not lamb) pie was a very hefty serving. Interestingly, the potatoes were in sporadic dollops rather than one smooth layer, and the meat and vegetable layer was much more stew-like than a typical shepherd's pie. It all worked though; the potatoes were smooth and creamy a had a touch of browning from the broiler, while the stew-y part was hearty and rich. The Brown Hound is brushing with greatness, and if it leaned into the British part of the menu a little more and had a few minor tweaks to step their game up, they could take over the top tier of the pub scene in Halifax.
