The smells coming out of the establishment were heavenly. I took a detour from Flagstaff to Tucson to try this place. I'm so glad I did. This service was fast and efficient, and the pies are made on premise and delicious. I noticed that a gentleman wearing a veteran's cap was greeted with a smile and told he would receive a small discount. Nice gesture. There's plenty of outdoor seating. I had the breakfast burrito (eggs & bacon) on the patio. It was my least favorite. Kinda dry inside. Might have been because I got the last one and it had been sitting for a while. There were so many choices, I took a few to go and noshed on the drive back. I liked the picadillo and green chile the best. The red chile beef had great flavor too, but I liked the other two better because they were mixed with other ingredients. The Panda was also very good - a mixture of some type cream cheese/Oreo filling. They also had a special, bananas foster, that I tried and it was yummy while it was hot. Someone suggest we drive back to Phoenix from Cottonwood by way of Strawberry to stop at the PieBar. It was well worth the trip. The drive was beautiful and the empanadas were amazing. Wish I had taken a picture of them but we ate them so quickly. Don't be scared away by the line it moves quickly. These are not a traditional empanada, there are so many choices. First time ever going to Strawberry AZ and we stopped at the Pie Bar. The peach empanada is amazing! I also tried the picadillo and was a bit disappointed, it was extremely salty and mooshy, nothing like the traditional picadillo I am used to that my parents and grandmother made us growing up. Our new favorite roadtrip spot. They should be featured in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Guy Fieri would love the food and the friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great quality empanadas and handheld pies. Their pie crust is delicious and they offer a huge variety of delicious fillings (savory & sweet). My daughter loved the Chicken Pot Pie empanada and said it was the best ever! I enjoyed the quality of the Picadillo beef with homemade Chimichurri sauce. Please bottle it!! My oh my! Loved that the menu is organized my "most popular" items, but we overheard some staff favorites that were lower down the board (so don't hesitate to go with your blink). We enjoyed several empanadas on the nearby (clean) picnic tables, then bought a couple dozen more to freeze and enjoy later (probably starting tomorrow morning!). The food here is amazing. Between the 4 of us, we sampled almost every type of empanada. We were not disappointed. The dessert empanadas were fabulous. Ordering was very easy. We had our choices written down to make it easy for us. We had an allergy question and the staff taking care of us was wiling to pull out her recipes to double check the ingredients. Seating is outside..nice and shady. And there is a real restroom...not a porta potty. We will definitely return. read more

It is hard to not miss PIEbar when you first drive into Strawberry. This small little place is painted in bright colors and has a sign with a large picture of who I believe is Salvador Dali on top of the building. There is usually a line out the door and seating is outside only. PIEbar sells sweet & savory empanadas, small & large pies, and beverages. I was staying at nearby Strawberry Inn and walked over for an afternoon snack. They have so many different types of filings to choose from. I was able to sample both sweet and savory. The dough they make for these little goodies is really good. If you are need for a quick snack or something on the go that you can hold in your hand, PIEbar is a great spot! read more

We found this place on our way to Pine. It's on the side of the road so you have to do a quick pullover . The empanadas we tried , apple, beef and the lemon were all delicious! Went on an overnight trip to Flagstaff from Tucson with my kids. Stopped at PIEBar for lunch and it was awesome! Strawberry is adorable and this was a perfect spot to stop, get some wonderful food and enjoy eating outside amongst the pines. We visited the old school house first, which was fun. So many empanadas options! I can't remember all the fillings we got, but loved them all. I do remember I got the vegan- so flavorful and moist. My daughter tried the ham and cheese and said it was her favorite empanada. For dessert we tried the lemon and the strawberry. Both were amazing, but the lemon was a dream. Not sure why, but I was taken back by how delicious and high quality the empanadas were. Sometimes things are so overhyped and when you finally try it, you feel a bit disappointed. Not the PIEBar though. The lemon and strawberry were like nothing I've had before and pure perfection. Looking forward to more trips up north and will absolutely be stopping by this wonderful place! It's worth a trip! It was fairly busy with many day trippers escaping the heat, but ordering was very efficient and more than enough seating outdoors. Oh! I've been wanting to try Piebar for a long time so my daughter and I stopped in for lunch. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We bought 6 savory empanadas. The veggie gallimaufry and bean and cheese were cold. The bean and cheese was mostly air. I didn't see any cheese, just a thin layer of beans. The mountain mama and veggie gallimaufry were so packed with spinach that we couldn't taste (or see) any of the other ingredients. The Philly and the artichoke empanadas were ok but bland. The pastry was good and the sauces were very tasty. One of the people who works there glared at us throughout our visit. Luckily, the person at the register was nice but it was hard to shake off the feeling that we were impositions. Based on all the great reviews, we may have caught them on an off day. read more

Stopped by to pickup some goodies for our hiking adventure. We got here before they opened so we sat around and wait. Pie bar is a cute cafe with ample outdoor sitting and parking. Menus were posted on the wall and on every table. There are many flavors to choose, from sweet to savory. Hand pies are their specialty, they also have whole pies, coffee and other drinks. I'm told that the flavor of pie is listed by popularity, so if you have a hard time choosing, then go for the top which is apple for sweet and mountain man for savory. Indeed you won't be disappointed, mountain man is pretty tasty, but our favorite for sweet is peach. These hand pie is around $4.50 a piece, and our regret was not getting enough. Should have had about 6-8 between the two of us. Don't hesitate to check this place out and err on the too many than not enough. read more

All manners of outdoor seating available and surrounded by trees. The place is incredibly clean. You do have road noise, but it's not consistent. In the sun you get a little Zen. The waiting line was long but those cheery yellow umbrellas (very eye catching from the road), shaded us well while we decided what to purchase. After arriving to strawberry we had some time to kill before checking in to our hotel, so we decided to give this place a try. First impression, we were surprised that they had limited selection of actual pie slices. It's primarily empanadas. But, they sounded good and decided on two to try. We get in line, order and pay, and as I walk away I noticed one of the workers looking a person up and down and giving them a sort of disgusted look. The person behind me had blue hair, a rainbow strapped bag, and appeared to be part of the LGBTQ community. When I noticed the workers expression, I asked him if he was ok (my way of letting him know that I noticed what he was doing) and he quickly turned, smiled (obviously taken off guard) and replied with "yes, just deep in thought." At this point, I replied with "I am sure" and walked away. At no point should someone be looked at that way, especially without cause. If this is the type of people and atmosphere at this place, and so openly, then it's not one I would ever support again. To top it off, the empanadas were nothing to write home about.
