Let's start with the food. I've only been there twice, but their menu is amazing. Lots of different varieties of empanadas. The first time there I did the mountain man with a chipotle dipping sauce. The second time I did the chicken pot pie and the panda for dessert. I have to say the first time was on a motorcycle trip and the second visit was the following day on the ride home. I can't wait to try more of their delicious goodies. Everything looked great, and what I had was delicious. As for the service, it's a tiny little establishment with three or four or five people packed in behind the counter all hustling. Everybody is super friendly and it doesn't take very long. They are also happy to make recommendations. The place is really neat when you pull up. It looks like a tiny little establishment and it is pretty small but what you don't realize is there is lots and lots of outdoor seating, all nestled in with lots of shade. It's one of the cooler places to visit. All in all, I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to go back. I planned another motorcycle trip this coming week and my first stop will be in Payson to top off my fuel and my second stop will be at the PIEbar for brunch. read more

We had seen this restaurant on Arizona Highways on PBS. As we were in the area, we decided to have lunch there. It's a carryout place, but there are plenty of tables outside. We had five empanadas. Lemon, mac & cheese with bacon, chorizo and bean, ham and cheese and chili pork. All were excellent, but the mac & cheese seemed to be lacking bacon. It is fairly expensive but quite filling. We decided to take a detour to enjoy Strawberry on the way up to Flagstaff. So glad we did! It added an hour and a half onto the drive up but was so worth it. We got here around 1:30 pm just in time for some lunch. As I turned my head to the right, asking what we should eat, we all said "PIEbar" together. Jinx. It's just the perfect little cafe. It's bright yellow so it catches your eye. A line of people waiting to order at the front door was moving fast. Parking is right off the highway and in front of the restaurant. There's also additional parking behind the restaurant down the hill. Stairs come straight up to patio from the lower lot. Beautiful patios surround the restaurant with shaded tables. Gorgeous Ivy covered pines and oaks cover the patio areas. Two gender neutral restrooms available in a separate small building next to the restaurant. I love how the menus are written and posted everywhere and list empanadas in order by popularity. Another thing I appreciate is the size of the empanada and the price. They are small enough and inexpensive enough that you could get a snack but if you wanted to get, let's say five or six because you're hungry for lunch it is still affordable. Service was so friendly and great as we ordered at the counter. I couldn't believe how quickly the ordering process went and we were handed a bag of warm empanadas before we knew it. this place lives up to the hype. The line looks intimidating, but it doesn't take that long at all. It was hard to pick just a few items off the menu, but I was happy with my selections which were the chicken pot pie in the bean and cheese empanada. The buffalo chicken one was also really good. This is a MUST visit in Strawberry! Being directly off of Hwy 260, you cannot miss it driving through town. It's absolutely worth the stop. The menu is huge, so there is an option for everyone! Savory and sweet options depending on the time of day. They are listed on the menu starting with the most popular and going down the list. We tried a bunch of different options and honestly enjoyed them all. Our favorites were the Green Chile Pork, Loaded Baked Potato, Philly Cheese, and the Chicken Pot Pie. We also really liked their breakfast ones too. The Panda one on the sweet options is delicious! Service is excellent here. Very quick and super helpful. They give perfect recs about what pairs with what sauce when ordering. They have a fridge of drinks, beers, and cocktails as well. Pies are available to buy in whole also. We got The Mountain Man, the Picadillo Beef, and Philly Cheese Steak. My favorite was the Philly cheese steak. Flavor 4/5. Service: quick, nice, and they have restrooms for public to use. My boyfriend and I were driving down from flagstaff and found this place. They were decent size and you can get a sauce with it for 85cents. Everything tasted great but I do have to say the Philly cheese steak one was my favorite. It had a lot of the pepper taste. This empanada bar is located north of Payson and Pine off the 87 on the west side. Can't miss their large yellow sign. There is almost always a line to order your empanadas, but it moves very fast. How have I not had empanadas before this? And what a great find to try them! PIEbar is a cute little walk in walk out empanada shop in a small town in AZ. You read the menu offerings while in line and when you get to the register they grab what you want and you are on your way. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I asked why it took 3 days to make them and was told they do not use yeast. So these need time to "rise." Ok the food. Wow. These small little pouches are filled with all kinds of goodness. We ordered 4, 3 savory and one sweet, and split them. Wow. Look, I don't know your tastes and what you like, but I'm posting a picture of the menu so you can see, they have a filling for pretty much anyone. The Green Chile and Buffalo chicken were my 1 and 2. And the LEMON one... I wanted to buy them out! 2 things to note that I did not deduct any stars from was if you want a sauce they charge, (pretty common nowadays,) and the seating is all outdoors. Cool little place on the side of the road. The line was probably 12 to 15 people deep which tells you something.... They don't really have time to be personable when you've got 15 people in line and more walking up. You kinda gotta get things done.....No rudeness just a busy place and people trying to get things handled to serve their customers as quickly and efficiently as possible. As for the food, we got five different savory empanadas, and several of their sweet and really the only one that I found not good at all was the pecan, it was very dry and just had a weird texture and flavor that I would not have expected.. All of the savory empanadas were amazing. They are small and premium priced but in a small little touristy area like that, it's what you expect, I'm sure they have to bring in all their product and that means driving and there's extra transportation cost. They don't have a Costco in their backyard so I understand the price is being a little higher, but I didn't feel that they were out of line. Overall, four out of five it's a little tiny open air place, and they are making their empanadas very rapidly baking them and then putting them and holding ovens the temperatures could've been a little higher on the ones that we got that's the only negative that I saw but overall worth stopping in read more

I can see why this place is so popular, as there aren't a lot of options for getting sweets in the area. As for the empanadas themselves, first flag was the crust was extremely doughy, as in undercooked. We tried peach, apple and cherry, and each was doughy. I would expect s crispier crust especially for an empanada. The filling unfortunately didn't make up for the crust in terms of flavor. As for the service, I was told 5 minutes wait for my peach which ended up being more than 15 minutes. We are here twice. Saturday at 11, no line, Sunday at 12, huge line! We tried several pies, artichoke dip and vegadilly for the vegetarian in the group. Vegadilly was preferred. Piccadillo beef, red chile beef, green chile pork, and bbq pork for the others. Red chile and green chile were preferred, the bbq was not. We stopped here during our roadtrip and because of the great reviews. We got there a little after the opened on a Friday morning and they had sooo many empanadas. We decided to go with the picadillo (a little spicy but good), the Mountain baby (Mac and cheese and bacon, had no bacon), the panda (Oreos and cream was delicious!) and the strawberries and cream (very good but on the sweeter side). I will give a special shout out to the Mountain Man which is filled with sausage, potatoes, gravy, and cheese - I mean, come on, what genius thought of that?! We were also lucky enough to be here when rhubarb is in season so we were able to enjoy the strawberry rhubarb filled one and OMG it was incredible. It's a tiny spot, but they have plentiful outdoor searing mostly in the shade. You absolutely cannot drive through Strawberry without stopping here. A few family members and I were on a road trip in AZ. As we were driving along the road through Payson AZ onto Strawberry AZ a lovely town .
