I honestly do not know where to start. I am not a picky eater. Quite frankly I'm probably not picky enough. I rarely complain about food and never send it back. Well tonight, when my wife had a craving for Mexican, we started searching the Union county area for a good spot. Growing up in Essex County, we were very close to Don Jose on Route 10 and Mexicali Rose in Montclair before they sold. So tonight when we found Picante on the internet and read some pretty good reviews we thought we'd give it a shot.
My first thought when stepping foot in the door was, what was my wife thinking this place is a dump! My second thought was, it gave off a fast food place type of vibe. It's definitely not a nice BYO that you might go to with a couple friends or for a date night where you want to spend a few hours at. I literally wanted to order and get out of there.
On to the food....My wife and I started with the special, the Chorizo Quesadillas. I was pretty excited about this choice since I love Chorizo and I love quesadillas. Well, when they came and the inside of the tortillas were filled with a few pieces of crumbled of chorizo and ridiculous amounts of black beans I was pretty deflated. For $13.95 I expected a lot more. To top it off, there was no cheese. We called the waitress over and asked if they were supposed to come with cheese and she glanced over at the special menu and said, no just chorizo and beans. My wife asked if she could just bring a cup of cheese over and we'd put it on. (PLEASE REMEMBER THIS FOR LATER) Well, they were terrible and not worth $13.95
For the main course my wife got the shrimp with garlic/butter. The whole meal tasted like there was lemon juice poured all over it. It was disappointing.
I went with the Chicken Burrito, thinking, how the hell can they screw this up. When it came out I actually thought to myself, ok, descent size, definitely didn't look like they skimped out on anything and I also loved the fact they cut the burrito in half. I've never been to a place where this was done. I actually appreciated that since sometimes eating a giant burrito can be a pain and real messy. Unfortunately the burrito itself did not live up the the standards of the actual presentation. It was 90% rice and beans. The amount of chicken in the burrito was honestly laughable. The chunks of chicken were the size of skittles and the amount they put in the burrito almost made it seem like I was getting a piece or 2 every 2 bites. Rice and beans dominated the burrito which was extremely disappointing.
As mentioned earlier, I rarely complain about food and almost never send anything back. That held true tonight, I did not complain, I did not send anything back. I politely asked for the check and thought to myself, you couldn't pay me to come back here again. When the check came and I saw I was charged $1.50 for the cheese I asked for with the quesadillas, I shook my head and walked out.
For those of you that gave this place a good review, I question what you were drinking that night because I want some.
