I had a very disappointing experience here. I brought in two rolls of 35mm film simply to have them developed (no scans or prints, as I have my own scanner at home). When I was told they don't offer "develop only," I said "that's a shame, no problem" and began to leave. Instead of ending the interaction there, the owner questioned why it was "a shame" and began explaining that there's "no money" in just developing film and that it's not worth it for him. He implied that I wasn't bringing enough business and suggested I should just learn to develop film myself. When I mentioned I already know how but don't have the equipment at home, he continued asking what lab I usually go to and what scanner I use, then laughed at my setup. At that point the conversation felt condescending and unnecessary. I was not upset that he doesn't offer develop-only services -- that's his right. What upset me was being made to feel like I was doing something wrong simply by requesting a service and being willing to pay for it. After the exchange escalated, he then offered to do the developing anyway, and eventually even said he would do it for free. By that point, the interaction had already become uncomfortable and argumentative, and I no longer felt confident giving him my business. A simple "we don't offer that service" would have been perfectly fine. Instead, the interaction became unprofessional and dismissive. I cannot recommend this shop based on how customers are treated. Also check out the response the owner Rick gave to my review on Google on the image attached. His response tells us far more about him as a person. 1. "We do not offer Dev. only and our website reflects that." This is deflection. My review already acknowledged that it's his right not to offer that service. That was never the core complaint. He's reframing the issue into something easier to defend -- policy -- instead of behavior. That's a classic move when someone doesn't want to address tone or conduct. 2. "Established 1998... devotion and love of photography..." That's credential shielding. When someone leans on years in business or passion as a defense, it usually means they don't want to examine how they handled a specific interaction. Longevity good customer service. 3. "The rest of your review is just a personal rant..." That's the tell. He didn't: Acknowledge my experience Apologize for any misunderstanding Say he's sorry I felt uncomfortable Clarify his intent Offer to make it right He labeled my review as emotional and dismissed it. That's ego protection. What this tells me about him * He takes criticism personally * He reacts defensively * He reframes instead of reflecting * He likely believes he did nothing wrong * He prioritizes being right over being relational Zero accountability in that response. A business owner with strong emotional intelligence would say something like: "I'm sorry the interaction came across that way. That was not my intention. While we don't offer develop-only services, I regret that the conversation felt uncomfortable." That would have neutralized everything. Instead, he escalated by calling it a rant. Hi hesitate to write this review because my interaction was so brief... no money was exchanged, but I did try to give this man my business. Whoever the guy was that came out from the back room. (I'm assuming it was Rick, gave me the most unfriendly welcome I think I've ever experienced at any business. I walked in smiling and greeting him by name telling him I'm the one who had called about transferring two 8mm film rolls to digital. Without getting into too much detail, what he quoted me over the phone turned out to be less than accurate and not the full story. The tone I experienced during the appointment was unnecessarily sharp and dismissive -- a more respectful approach would have gone a long way. My advice: Please be kind to your customers, especially those who are trying to come prepared. Double-check digital files before handing them off or emailing them -- mine was corrupted and unusable the first time. And please pay more attention to sharpness and detail on passport photos; I still had to fix mine afterward. I hope this feedback is taken constructively. I came here to get a 2 by 2 photo upsized to an 8 by 10 photo for $20 with tax $22.05. The man who help me I assume is Rick swap my credit card. By his own error, he return me $22.05 instead of charging me. So I proceeding to look on my phone credit card statement if I was charge or not . Apparently Rick I assume became enrage and saying "you don't believe me ?" He took my 2 by 2 photo and threw it to me saying "I don't want to do this" . As I was walking out of his store, he tells me I'm stealing his $22 dollars . I told him I didn't steal from you, you gave it to me. I looked on my credit card statement after I left , instead of just cancelling the return charge, I see an $22.05 unauthorized charge in my credit card. read more

I don't know where to start...because my heart is full with joy. First of all, let me just say that if you have not experienced stopping by to inquire about film development/photography correcting, purchasing any kind of products and or framing options at Photoworks by Rick; let me just say that you better get over to receive the DOPEST customer service that you can get! I will never, ever, ever, ever EVA' going to anyone else in his line of business. So, I came into Rick's business 20 minutes before he closed. (Please note that the aesthetics in Rick's shop make you feel nothing but nostalgia. You want to go back in time when life made sense here in America). I was in need of developing digital images from my phone, to purchase a black and white disposable camera and to inquire pricing for framing. I started to explain to him what I was looking for; he instantly guided me on what I wanted and what to do to get it done. Every question that I had, he had answered with such brilliant humor! All I could do was giggle! I was in awe and was so excited to receive his services and come back for the outcome. Rick has the realest, straightforward and savvy way of communicating. I can't lie, his directions and attitude makes you feel at home and like you are his family. Now, this is the main reason that I must share my review... As I was talking to Rick, I also asked him if he was able to develop 20+ year old pixelated images? I explained and shared with him that I had a pixelated picture that meant the world to me during my college years; a time that I wanted to commit suicide; a sad very dark time. I explained to Rick that I wanted to frame this picture so that I can remind myself of how far I have come in life. Rick wholeheartedly listened to my life story and made me feel comfortable with what I was sharing. It was a good moment of truth. He asked me to email him to the picture so he could review it. Rick then let me know of how much it would cost if I ordered it . Unfortunately, the cost was not in my budget so I told Rick that I will come back another time to get it done. Rick simply assured me that I will love his work on those type of photos. Nothing came to mind when he stated that. After the weekend, I came back to pick up my paid items. When I arrived, Rick provided me my items but then told me to hold on one second as he when to the back of his shop... Rick came out holding DEVELOPED pixelated pictures that were corrected in a 8x10, 5x7, 4x6 & wallets of the pixelated picture!!!! He told me that all of them were on the HOUSE!! I just started to cry!!!! I could not believe it! This was the biggest blessing that I have ever received from anyone!! Rick is such an PHENOMENAL HUMAN BEING!! All I can say is that I feel NOTHING but Bliss! Very few people have hearts like Rick's! I will ALWAYS take my photography and printing services, framing to Photoworks by Rick! This guy straight up lied to my face. Gave me a price and when he went to charge me, he gave a much higher price. He did this to me twice. Unbelievable!!!! Who tf does that??? Film developing and scanning is horrible as well!! He takes 1-2 weeks before he scans my film and then I get 1MB per photo!!!! Absolute shit quality. I can go somewhere else with the same price and get my photos back within 2 hours with 25MB size per photo!!! He also once took over a month to do my print. If I had never reminded him he would have never done it. I called him and asked him about it and gave me a "oh I absolutely forgot, remind me again?" HE HAS DONE THIS TO ME MULTIPLE TIMES. He doesn't care. He'll gladly take your money and not give a single f*ck after! This guy is an absolute douchebag! He has the worst attitude and talks sh*t about his customers ALL THE TIME. I've been needing to digital archive a painting that I sold as well as get some high quality art prints made. I drive by the shop almost everyday and decided why not! So happy I did, the digital archive had so much so consideration and attention to detail! On top of that the prints came out impressive! I used liquid acrylic on water color paper, and he was able to get the soft gradients perfectly. The painting has a lot of red, which can be a difficult color to transfer. But they came out flawless. I'm originally from Monrovia but I moved to San Diego. I was in town visiting my mom and I needed a last minute passport photo. I went to a non-professional service and my photos came out horrible so I decided to have them redone. I found Photoworks on Yelp and immediately called. Rick answered the phone and let me know he would be happy to take care of my passport photo and I sped on over. When I arrived he greeted me and quickly had me sit and take my photo. He made sure he got just the right picture! As soon as we were done he had me wait for what seemed like 30 seconds and he had the photos ready. Wow!
