I went in Ecotopia over the weekend because I'd heard they have a great selection of audio…read moreequipment. That's an understatement. There are stacks all over the store of receivers, tuners, turntables, and speakers. The owner, Moses, was super friendly. He was helping some other folks when we went in, so after he was done with them I asked him for his advice. I didn't realize that meant he would spend almost two hours with me, showing me what equipment he had. He really seems to know his stock back and forth, pulling out names of speakers that were under stacks and insisting that he'd love to let me hear them if I wanted. He told me about the speaker designers, the characteristics of each brand, and what kind of sounds would be emphasized with each. He insisted that every piece of equipment was fully checked when he brought it in He laid out all my options, within my price range, for the styles of music I listen to, and preferred making me listen to different speaker combinations rather than describing them to me. This took some time to attach and detach each set from the receiver, but I really did learn a lot about what the different speakers sounded like, and which brands have similar profiles. Ultimately, I was happy to have a guide that was patient. I didn't anticipate spending so much time to do so, but I don't regret it at all, since it is an investment. I found a set of speakers that I love (after listening to about 10 different sets) that should be perfect for what I need. Ultimately, I think I maybe paid a higher price than I would have gotten on ebay or craigslist for my speakers, but Moses was ridiculously helpful and patient with me and was happy to give me the information I needed. I'm also sure that the speakers are in good working condition - which is worth a lot as well. I don't know about the repair aspect of his shop, but if you want to buy some modern or vintage equipment, Moses can hook you up.

When I poked my head in back a guy there said he was a customer I told him good bye. As I began to drive off a bewildered man came out with a phone pressed to his ear and kept apologizing he was on an international call. I showed him my envelope with $1500 cash that was going to be used in a purchase at that time. Then he says its not about the money. What is it about then Ecotopia? Is it about being all alone in a store with nobody to help because they are on international cell phone calls? Please I will not be back, ever.

Almas Hi-Fi Stereo did the complicated installation of a 7.1 surround sound system in my home…read moreseveral years ago. I selected the equipment and paid for it a piece at a time until the system was completed, taking each component home as I paid for it. A couple days before the scheduled installation, Paul (the owner) offered to come out to my house and give it a look-over to prepare his installers for the job. After pacing off the room, taking measurements and the like, he told me that most of the speakers I selected wouldn't work well in the space because of the unusual layout and construction of the room (it has three glass doorwalls and some very small spaces where the speakers would have to be mounted. I didn't considerer this when I was choosing the equipment). He then suggested alternative models from the same manufacturer that had different cabinets and would work better in the room and be easier to install. The cost difference was negligible. I decided to take his advice. A couple days later the installers (employees, not contractors) came to my house and spent a good eight hours crawling around in my basement and attic working on the installation. Their work was flawless. The guys who showed up to install the cable the next day were dunderheads, though, and my system wasn't working properly when they left. I couldn't figure out why. That night, Paul called me and asked me how I like the system. I told him that it was great, except for the problem caused by the guys who installed the cable. Paul offered to come out to my house the next evening and see if he could fix the problem; I told him I'd be there at the appointed time. Paul showed up right when he said he would and started to poke around. It took him less than a minute to figure out what the cable guys had screwed up and only another minute to fix the problem. He then put the system through its paces to make sure it was working correctly, giving me some rudimentary instruction on how it all worked. He shook my hand, thanked me for my business and left. No charge. I know I could have gotten a cheaper system if I'd gone to a big-box store, but I thought a small business operated by the man who owned it would give me better service than a place like, say, Best Buy. I was right. If I ever have to do it again (and I am still living around here), I'm going right back to Almas.

I couldn't be happier with the result. Can't believe how it made my vinyls sound, as well ! Purchased a TV antenna as well. Great antenna but inadequate installation. Had a local antennae guy remount the unit - so minus one star.

Nice looking shop. The lobby before you enter is super cool and aesthetically pleasing. The…read morerecord selection was decent too. I was more impressed with the record accessories; cleaners, sleeves, etc... They had great prices on those. The gentleman behind the counter was pleasant. The prices on the vinyl were decent. They had a few albums that I thought were a bit overpriced but supply and demand. You gotta pay to play these days and there is nothing wrong with that. The store is small but I can see it growing. One issue is trying to look at albums when some dude who thinks he is cool is laying all his albums out over the the entire rack to check for scratches and you can't access the rack (I have been dealing with those kind of guys for 38 years). They need to have a little table so people can inspect. Yes- you guy who kept flashing The Cure's Seventeen Seconds album at me like I already don't have two copies of it in my collection. Lol That has nothing to do with the store. The only issue I had was not being greeted so I couldn't really ask about the records under the racks. We're they for sale? What genre? I wanted to ask but didn't want to interrupt the owner/manager/counter gentleman's conversation. Other than that they were super cool and I will return...Just remember that there are a lot of women who have a hefty music collection (as well as gear) and they deserve music talk as well. Go there if you are into vinyl!!!

Super friendly and well beyond knowledgeable. Mr. Alan provides more than just a speaker repair…read moreservice he is a teacher as much as anything. I dropped my prized Advent and AR93Q drivers off for a re-surrounds treatment. I felt perfectly at ease with the level of expertise Mr. Alan gave to me in his description of how he would handle my prized speakers. Will update on quality and timeliness of service received. Received speakers back roughly 1 week later, super fast turnaround. Quality of work was awesome. Very clean and steady hand. Alan also fixed a faulty voice coil lead, no extra charge! This is very welcomed and has earned a customer for a long time to come. I already have another set for Alan to refoam the surrounds.
