Owner or manager could not be bothered to acknowledge me being in his store. I stood around for almost 15 minutes without so much as a hello. When I poked my head in back a guy there said he was a customer I told him good bye. As I began to drive off a bewildered man came out with a phone pressed to his ear and kept apologizing he was on an international call. I showed him my envelope with $1500 cash that was going to be used in a purchase at that time. Then he says its not about the money. What is it about then Ecotopia? So, what you have to know is that LP's I listen to are the soundtrack of my childhood. I love reading the liner notes on them and my late Mother's name is written on a lot of them. Now I get to what I'm playing my lp's on...garbage, time for an upgrade. A friend says wait before buying something online and go to ECOTOPIA, they have what you need, previously played and affordable. What I have to say is I received an education on turntables unparalleled to any blog I could read and I read a lot. I've tried to come here twice now and apparently they open when they feel like it. Once I got here 10 minutes before they weren't scheduled to open and waited 40 minutes and another time I got there 15 minutes after they were supposed to open and again waited around 20 minutes. I went in Ecotopia over the weekend because I'd heard they have a great selection of audio equipment. That's an understatement. There are stacks all over the store of receivers, tuners, turntables, and speakers. The owner, Moses, was super friendly. He was helping some other folks when we went in, so after he was done with them I asked him for his advice. I didn't realize that meant he would spend almost two hours with me, showing me what equipment he had. He really seems to know his stock back and forth, pulling out names of speakers that were under stacks and insisting that he'd love to let me hear them if I wanted. He told me about the speaker designers, the characteristics of each brand, and what kind of sounds would be emphasized with each. He insisted that every piece of equipment was fully checked when he brought it in He laid out all my options, within my price range, for the styles of music I listen to, and preferred making me listen to different speaker combinations rather than describing them to me. This took some time to attach and detach each set from the receiver, but I really did learn a lot about what the different speakers sounded like, and which brands have similar profiles. Ultimately, I was happy to have a guide that was patient. I didn't anticipate spending so much time to do so, but I don't regret it at all, since it is an investment. I found a set of speakers that I love (after listening to about 10 different sets) that should be perfect for what I need. Ultimately, I think I maybe paid a higher price than I would have gotten on ebay or craigslist for my speakers, but Moses was ridiculously helpful and patient with me and was happy to give me the information I needed. I'm also sure that the speakers are in good working condition - which is worth a lot as well. I don't know about the repair aspect of his shop, but if you want to buy some modern or vintage equipment, Moses can hook you up. read more

This place might be one of the weirdest shops you set foot in, is it a stereo shop, is it a imported nick-nack shop , china or thrift store? Well probably all of the above. But from what I can gather they mostly do used stereo and hi-fi equipment, Fist off, know what you want when you come here, they have tons of stereos mostly high end stuff. Some stuff is SUPER HIGH END Audio, we're talking thousands of dollars other are more low end stuff like $100-$350 Range. The guy seems to know his stuff and tells you all equipment has been tested by a technician. I will say the equipment looks clean. This guy is a talker, and will try to convince you you're getting a good deal. I would say know what it's worth before you come in. I think he's trying to sell you more on the fact you know it works if you buy from him, he tests it out on site and lets you listen before you leave. As far as dickering on this stuff, I hope you have better luck than I did, this guy wouldn't budge on the price one bit. But he did say he's more willing to dicker on the very expensive stereos vs. the ones I was interested in. So he might have a point. I did spend about $120 on a used receiver that would have cost over $200 brand new. But I did see the same unit going for about $50 on Craigslist. But to his credit he did plug It in for me , so I knew it was working before I bought it (No idea about his return policy.) And yes it still work in my house and sounds great. If you're looking for quality stuff you may want to check this place out. You may get an Amazing deal, or like me a quality stuff for a little more (less than buying new) with assurance it will work when you leave. read more

EVIL Although Moses the primary sales person was very helpful I do not think in retrospect he is very dishonest. I was lies to regarding the original value of the equipment and then when I went to return the equipment that I over paid for the sales person said, "No returns, No refunds." It did not matter that the equipment was defective and did not perform as promised policy is no returns. You are stuck with what you got. Do not believe them at the store. Double check everything. They will screw you if they can. I would say EVIL is a good description of the business practices at Ecotopia. I never got a refund. read more

Moses is a very friendly people-person. But even more important than that, Moses is knowledgeable and honest. He was up front and straight with me about some older Stanton turntables that they could not be repaired. He even offered to refund me the diagnostic fee! Ecotopia and its owner, Moses, are great! There really isn't any other place like this store in the Detroit area. There are amplifiers, pre-amps, receivers, speakers, turntables and tape decks of all sorts stacked near to the ceiling that you just cannot find anywhere else, not in one store and not in such great shape. There are real treasures here. It is true, it is not run like other stores. Moses doesn't always answer the phone promptly. I hear he doesn't always open promptly. And when you get there, you may have to wait a while for service, a long while even, because Moses is one man providing service to many customers. Relax and window shop while you wait, folks, and tread slowly because there is SO MUCH at Ecotopia. You won't see a collection of audio appliances in one place like this anywhere else near Detroit. Also, you are probably not going to find a cheap bargain here. You will, however, find good deals, great deals even. Every piece of equipment he sells has been well serviced and he will happily show you that it works. Moses also will work happily within your budget to get you what you need for satisfying listening. We are talking about a lot of appliances that in any other context would be considered antiques, and they're in working order. The electronics technician you can reach through Ecoptopia -- Dan -- is top-notch. He saved my turntable, and I doubt anyone else in Metro Detroit could have. If you want to go somewhere else and get offered "bargains" -- if only you open a store-branded credit card, take their financing offer, and pay for their warranty -- head to a big box store, you know the one. You can also go to a few highly reputable, custom A/V installers and really, custom residential, construction contractors, many of whom are great at their work and sell great pieces as well, but it is going to cost you. Ecotopia and Moses are something altogether different. This is a near last of its kind -- one of only a few handfuls in the country, really -- a real stereo store. And what a store! There's so much here! Moses isn't carrying many new lines of equipment. He deals almost exclusively in used pieces, but they're in great shape. If you're willing to wait a bit and take your time -- if you're willing to kick back a little and enjoy what you're looking at, and hearing, that you won't see in one place anywhere else -- then you will find this is perhaps the finest audio electronics store around. read more
