Helpful, but unobtrusive, staff that are not particularly snobbish and know their stuff. Probably my new favorite place to shop for vinyl. There are more than a few places in town to get records now. Some are larger than others, some specialize in particular genres. Found Sound has that wonderful mix of just about everything, and their prices are actually more than reasonable. The difference here however is the crew. So many places have staff that vacillate between casual indifference to active dislike. Found Sound has a team that genuinely cares about your experience, and are actually happy to talk to you. I recently was perusing their soundtrack selection and found a copy I of an album I wanted. I noticed what I thought were scratches on one side, and asked the team member about it. He immediately confirmed they were light scratches and marked the price down accordingly. I can't imagine every place would be honest in this way. About the only negative of shopping here are the narrow pathways, but honestly it just means they've got more stuff for you to look at when you're there. What a fun place! Lots of hard to find records and memorable here. The staff really knows their stuff and are both friendly and helpful. They buy and sell old records, and in my experience they seem fair about telling you what stuff is worth. They are located downtown Ferndale near several other well known shops. Cool store with a lot of variety and actually well stocked with new and reissues. I was a bit disappointed that the used stock appears lighter than I remember, so there aren't really many bargains as I had hoped for and remember from the past. That's more of a function of the used vinyl market these days though, so I don't fault Found Sound, it's more like, they get gobbled up fast! They know their stuff and are not pretentious. I cannot say enough good things about this store! From the moment your pulled in from the curb you understand that they have a lot of inventory, they have employees with a lot of knowledge, and they have super great deals!!! Triple threat. it is super easy to navigate the store depending on what you are looking for. most of the store is comprised of records, which are organized by genre and then within that section by alphabet. It's hard not to dig into the records and get lost not exploring the other gems, so if you are there for vinyl I'd recommend walking the other small sections first so you can focus. They had a room filled with vhs, merch, posters, arcade games, cassette tapes, comic books and so much more! Every inch is utilized to display vintage pop culture or showcase an incredible item. Whenever I'm in Detroit my first stop is Found Sound, it's the coolest spot for a wide variety of records and great conversation. 75% of the staff are old school record store OGs and the other 25% are new cats that can clue you on the hottest shit you haven't heard. Called the store to see if they had the record my dad wanted for his birthday, Queen's Greatest Hits. Gentleman on the phone ran to check if they had it - they did. Went on down to buy it. Everyone (all 3 staff members) greeted me with a smile. I can't say I look particularly cool as to somehow expect such a warm degree of salutation, yet I was very pleased with their convivial vibe. Overall, they have a very good selection of vinyl. It leans more towards new rather than used, but what matters most is that you'll find something that you definitely want to buy. Ya see, (cue string concerto or somber sonata) all my family lives out of state & not only does Found Sound carry records ranging from 5 for a $1 to big $$, but these are good people who listen & share an enthusiasm for life that is contagious & fun to be around. I traded in 10 boxes of vinyl for credit & bought all kinds of new & old records, dvds, cds, etc. They put on concerts at the beginning of the month & are just the kind of people Earth needs. I've been to Found Sound twice now and I was pleased with both visits. I'm one of those people that listens to a little bit of everything and I've been pleased to find some thing I was interested in during each visit. I didn't get the name of who I talked to last time, but the store was very busy and he still had time to answer a couple quick questions I had in between taking care of other customers. I also like that I found a couple newer releases by MusicOnVinyl and MSFL (Silver Label) in stock with the regular records. A lot of times, I grab those releases off the internet because I understand that a local business generally can't take the risk of having a $30-$45 catalog title because it might sit there for moths without any interest. Pricing on used items has been inconsistent so that's the only reason I'm not giving them a 5. Going forward it may even out and if so, I'll definitely revise my rating. During my last visit I found a fairly rare Floyd record that was priced exactly right in my experience so I picked that up, but I had to pass on a live Sinatra record because the condition of the actual records was awful and it was way over priced. I've priced that particular album through a lot of resources lately and found that even in good condition, it should have been priced about half what it was. For organization, diversity of stock and most of all friendliness of staff, I have no problem dishing out a 4 out of 5 for them. read more

Probably the most 'professional' record store in SE Michigan, and I don't mean that as any kind of put down. The selection is excellent. Things are clean and well organized. Really easy to find stuff. The staff has always been super friendly. The kind of place that's been the model of a 'good record store' for the past 40 years. I'd probably say this is my FAVORITE record store in the Detroit area, but maybe not the BEST record store. Why not the best? Well, in my opinion, the BEST record stores are the ones that you have a good chance of finding a real diamond in the rough. Places you can dig thru crates and find an amazing record for cheap. These guys know their stuff and price appropriately, so honestly you're never going to find a 'steal' or even a real surprise. You're going to find good quality records at prices you should expect for good quality records. It's the place you buy Beatles records for $20...not the place you happen upon a good Soul record that only you appreciate for $3 (because THEY appreciate it too...so its also $20 ;) 5 Stars because the place is really well run, the staff is awesome, and it's the kind of place I'll go when I'm ready to buy 1 good record at a price 'thats to be expected'. Stopped in today for the Grand Opening of Found Sound - and wasn't the only one, that's for sure! The store lay-out is conducive to browsing, as evidenced by the many bodies flipping through records looking for a treasure to add to their collection. Their inventory selection is great - The staff was friendly and excited to welcome everyone into their new business - The pricing is on par with what you would expect. Their "normal" priced merchandise is in the bins, and there is a wall of $2 treasures like the sweet Culture Club record that I am now a proud owner of. :) They had records (Both LPs and 45s), CD, books, t-shirtsand various other items for sale. If you are a fan of a good record shop, come check them out. If you're reading this today (7/21/12) - they're having a bunch of bands at 9Pm tonight for their Opening party. :P read more

They've only been open a few months, so I'm willing to go back later and re-review. For now, they do have a nice array of local vinyl, but overall their selection is not great, the prices are really high. In fact, I've found identical titles in the dollar bin at Street Corner going here for $6-9, in the same condition. With the upcoming demise of the always mediocre Record Collector across the street, Found Sound will be the only source for music in Ferndale. I hope they improve and plan on checking in again later this year. Until then, I'll be hitting up Street Corner in Southfield, and Hello in Corktown for most of my vinyl needs. read more

May I start by saying: Found Sound, welcome to the neighborhood! I'm very glad Found Sound popped up in the space that used to be Mother Fletcher's vintage shop. It's a great space in a great town, Ferndale. I love record shops and am happy that the digital realm of music hasn't killed them all off. I was somewhat disappointed with the selection at Found Sound in comparison to another shop of its kind in Royal Oak...perhaps it's a new business thing. Maybe they just haven't fully stocked their shelves yet, but it felt sparse. I'd go back and give it another chance just solely based on the feeling of the place- which was good. I liked the area in the back with all the album covers and seating. It gave the place a welcoming feeling, like you'd want to just hang out there for hours browsing and hunting for some good new vinyl. It has potential. Keep filling those shelves, Found Sound. The bulk of the other reviews have it right- space is huge, selection is small, price can be a little unreasonable. That will about sum it up. They have so much space to really stuff the place chock full of music but it's a bit sparse. Though they have a good variety of genres with a mix-in of old, new, and local, it's still sparse. I do, however, want to add that I stopped into the store because I was interested in three posters that hang in the display window. one in particular- one that i would have offered a VERY attractive price for- and still would. i stopped in my tracks when i saw this poster and beelined to the counter to ask them how much. i would have about paid anything. they refused to sell it to me. i was very, very disappointed. i feel like it's a safe assumption to think that anything in the display window is for sale, or that merchandise in the store is generally for sale, but i'm wrong. it's more important to decorate the store to make it look like they sell certain things rather than sell them to me. those posters i want still sit in the window, teasing me and mocking me every time i pass. i don't bother to step in these days. a store that doesn't really sell things? i don't know. i assume they want my money. and i want to give them my money. i'm vey willing. i'd be happy to fork over money for stuff that's in their store, but they won't really meet me halfway on that. i probably sound like a very difficult customer from this review but a store that doesn't sell stuff in their display window makes little sense to me. read more

I was so happy to stumble upon this record store, located in the old MF Vintage space. Ferndale needs a record store to fill the void of the loss of the Record Collector. The staff was super friendly (we didn't realize what time they closed, and he let us stay a few minutes after closing to finish up our purchases). The space is a little sparse - but they're new and it's a record store - so I'm sure before long, we'll be climbing over boxes to view the selections. The only downside is that I found them to be a bit pricey. There were items priced for $8 or $9, that were at Solo Records for $2 or $3. read more

Ever since Record Time closed its doors in Ferndale I've been pretty bummed about the lack of great record stores there. Last weekend I got to check out Found Sound for the first time and I'm impressed! The store has a great vibe when you walk in. Make sure you look up at the awesome ceiling! I found a lot of albums to be reasonably priced. Of course there were some expensive ones, but that seems to be the par for the course in all record shops nowadays, especially for new vinyl/reissues. They also have a section with a lot of music-related books, which is something I appreciated. What's better than reading about the music you're listening to?! It's a little bit of a hike for me but Found Sound is going to be put in my regular record store rotation. read more

This place only gets 3 stars because I think they can do better. I applaud the fact that they have their local music mixed in with everybody else as opposed to having that lonely "Local Section" that we see at some other record stores. That tactic alone in genius because when someone comes across a Druid Perfume album, they won't even know its a local band (most people don't even buy local music. But anyway. ..) In my opinion, Streetcorner Music is still the best store in the state of Michigan. However, I will place this store at #2 on my list because I'm sick of walking out of UHF having spent $100+ on a few albums. To some people that's nothing, but to me, it's fucking stupid. I was having dinner a few blocks away when I checked Yelp to see if there were any record store near by - EUREKA!!!! problem was that it was 8 minutes before closing when we got there. I made a beeline to check out the few things I'm REALLY looking for . There were a few other people shopping and after a bit I figured that we were all playing dumb that we didn't know that they were suppose to have closed 15 minutes ago. At 8:30, as I rummaged through the discounted CD's - they're below the main CD section, in genre labeled boxes - I apologized to the guy behind the counter that I was keeping him. He genuinely made me feel welcome to browse at my leisure - I'm sorry but this simply does not happen in American anymore, at least I don't see it...or maybe it's us angry/hurried NYers . It wasn't like I was going to pay his light bill for the month with my purchases, he was just happy to make some customers happy and maybe make a few bucks. Too cool !!! read more

Found Sound has a lot to dig through, including new and used records, and a pretty decent selection of new Indie. The best things I've found though, are used punk records (I picked up Wire's 154 for a good price, in good condition!). I've found a few decent blues and jazz records too, but the rock section is pretty standard. I have overpaid for a few records here, but I don't mind a few extra dollars for a local business (sometimes). I see some really excellent records up on the walls - The first pressing of Hootenanny? Are you kidding? That's so cool. Of course, I can't afford it, but it's great that these guys are able to get records of that caliber. read more

If you're looking for new vinyl they have a large selection but the downside is most titles are expensive. Used vinyl selection is limited and also overpriced. There are better stores out there with better selection and lower prices read more

Great local record store. I've found great audio gems in here from time to time. The prices have been maybe just a little steeper than other places in the area, but only by a buck or two. Not sure why there is always multiple people smoking in the entrance way, but it's a big turn off. Especially since they typically leave their front door open and all that nastiness fills the store. I like to check the new arrivals and head out before I get too much secondhand smoke. read more

Well. Let me start this review by letting you guys know that I am an avid music collector. I particularly collect CD's. So naturally I have found myself submerged into a network of unassuming music stores and disc dealers. If it specializes in selling music and it's within 100 miles of where I live, I've been there. NOW, in my travels I've happened upon a few stores that never disappoint. There are record stores I go to practically every week, and always find something new or rare or exciting. Then there are stores that I wish to go out of business. With all due respect to whatever neo-hipster business nazi came across enough money to open up another useless retail store in the already disarmingly pretentious "Art City" that is Ferndale, I want to officially tell you that if you are a music advocate, don't go out of your way to come to this store. (Sorry for the run-on) THE GOOD: Found Sound is in a great position. With the closing of the much-beloved Record Collector, they are the premier music store in all of Downtown Ferndale. There is literally no better place to have this establishment. Literally no better place. Near the back of the store, they've set up a nice little listening room. There's a CD player and a vinyl player. Good headphones and chairs (when I was there anyway). Nice touch, if not the best part about the whole store. THE BAD: Pricey. Pricey. I've been here 3 times. Not a single trip has culminated in a new CD for Shawn. The CD collection here is damn near pathetic. I recall maybe 10 albums that had any actual value to them. Not to mention, most CD's in stock cost about 3 times more then what you could get them for ANYWHERE else. Wal-Mart prices. So with a dismal CD collection, I turn my attention to the records. One thing you can be sure of is that this place has a lot of records. I don't know where they came from but they're here. However, in my brief contact with the vinyl racks, I can't say I saw anything worth much. Mostly things you can find in your grandparents garage. -onward- In the windows and entrances of the store, there are countless band posters. Countless. When we asked to buy a Foo Fighters poster, the girl at the register looked at us like we might be stupid, and replied "no." Weird. Every store I've ever been to sells it's posters. Upon further review near the backdoor, I noticed that most (if not all) of the promo stuff taped to the walls were fake. No real posters here, just black and white wallpaper. Weird. The lingering charm of walking Downtown 9 mile wears off within a few minutes of entering the door, to be honest. And all you see is people sifting through crap; I don't recall seeing anybody buying anything. OVERALL: I am still a bit hurt over the loss of the superior Record Collector across the street, however after giving this store multiple chances to impress me I have managed to gather an unbiased opinion. Found Sound is young. And (perhaps on it's new legs) it is entirely unimpressive. For casual shoppers, this place won't bother you. It's average. For actual music collectors, this place will probably frustrate you. The collection is ever-stale. The staff is typically hipster. The atmosphere is forgettable. The management is asking for more money then their music deserves. In the end, Found Sound is a place to be seen at, not a place for collectors. read more

I loved the atmosphere at Found Sound. The decor was funky with purple walls. The great thing about this place is that the records were placed at the proper level so customers didn't have to bend over to look through the sections of records. A lot of thinking went into the store design and it shows. There was a huge screen down at the end that could be pulled down, so I imagine that the play actual footage from live concerts and there is a section where a band can set up and play right there at the store. They are trying to sell their records and entertain their customers. I hope this record store succeeds where so many others have failed. read more
