Record Graveyard is hands down the best record store in the Detroit area. No pretenses, simply the best way to add to my ecord collection.

Makes me want to buy a record player. Or better yet, I'll buy some as gifts and listen to them at my friends' homes.

Downtown Detroit

This is a wackadoodle bookstore for the lovers of Atlas Obscura type stuff. It is massive, the…read moreplace is packed to the brim, and they randomly have some ephemera (eg a confederate-era bill) that are on display and for sale. They also have a bunch of postcards organized by city/topic that were a lot of fun to rifle through. I took my parents here and my dad, who is notoriously a non-reader, absolutely loved it. The employees were also very nice and helpful. They have a selection of free books at the entrance, none of which were appealing but I appreciated it nonetheless. Prices were a bit higher than they should have been - "nothing books" (by which I mean used paperbacks with nothing noteworthy to them) were around $3-6. Obviously not going to break the bank, but they were the sort of books you could find for a dollar or less at a yard or library sale. One other bummer is that they do have a collection of rare books, but they're housed at a different location. All the titles can be seen on their website, but it's naturally so much more fun to view in person. Overall a cool place, and absolutely worth a visit. Not sure if I'd recommend planning on making a purchase, but if you're a bookstore lover or just a lover of oddities this is a must do.

Wow! So many books! Over a million used and rare books. Many floors. This place is massive. One of…read morethe largest book stores in the country. I think it's best to go with a plan of what you are looking for. It can be overwhelming to just wander around. They have maps available, which is helpful. The staff is very helpful and friendly, and I recommend seeking their expertise if you are looking for something specific. There aren't really places to sit down and relax. This isn't a place where you come to chill for a long time and read through things. This feels like a place where you come with a purpose. It really is special.

Kitab Cafe and Bookstore - Gallagher Sandwich was delicious!

Kitab Cafe and Bookstore

it is definitely more of a café than a bookstore!…read more Not a ton of books selections, but it is a great coffee spot. The sandwiches and bakery items look great, the soup smelled wonderful. I was there, but I would definitely come here for another black and tan. Staff were fast and friendly. It's clean and inviting.

I popped into this super cute hybrid bookstore/cafe on a whim and I'm so glad I did! I was…read moreliterally driving by and saw the sign and pulled right up front to check it out. It was a little later in the day so I decided to skip the coffee and went with a hot chocolate instead and some potato leek soup to go. The hot chocolate was a little sweeter than I like but it still hit the spot on a frigid winter day and I loved the soup! I'm not sure how often they have that variety but I'd definitely order it again if I saw it offered during future visits. They also do sandwiches (until 5pm) and have a nice selection of Zingerman's pastries to boot. The bookstore selection isn't huge but it's curated to showcase a few noteworthy titles in fiction, non fiction, and children's. There space in general isn't massive but it doesn't feel cramped either, with ample tables and a comfy seating area with couches for working, meeting, or just hanging out and reading a book. Barista was really kind and welcoming and there's a ton of local fliers, meeting info, etc located on a centralized bulletin board by the counter, which shows me they're a community centered space which I love! Looking forward to the opportunity to visit again, and next time I'll definitely be getting some coffee!
