This experience has to do with the announcement of Ariana signed vinyls and CDs at this store. I'm trying my best not to be a "hater", but I called yesterday and was told by an employee that we couldn't get ariana signed vinyls upon opening. I was told that an announcement would be made on Instagram about the vinyl release and that anyone that came before would be unable to purchase the product as a result. I understand there are contractual obligations but please don't lie, instead it could have been stated "due to contracts, we can't disclose any info on the arrival of the vinyls". This is also not me bashing anyone that received a vinyl/cd. It's the mere disappointment that many of us are having by being told different stories by the store. I hope this is handled better in the future. read more

This place has alot of good Vinyls as well as CDs and they have a small Cassette tape selection but this is the 1st record store that I have been to that had Cassette tapes. They have quite a variety of other things as well like crazy socks, Keychain and other stuff. A very neat and unique store. read more

What a great all around record store. The state's biggest selection of vinyl and CDs both used and new. Also a great selection of DVDs/Blu Rays, books, t-shirts and even stereo equipment. Free easy parking. The one big tip I just figured out is that all their new used vinyl arrivals drop on Sunday. I used to be a regular at Dearborn Music back in my high school days. Coming here, digging through the used CDs looking for sweet new tunes or imported singles from some of my favorite artists (bsides!), comprised some of my favorite memories from those days. My days of tearing through CD bins and needing to seek out every album mentioned in NME are behind me but I still dig finding new tunes and picking up reisssues of some of my faves on occasion. My fella is a total music junkie so I enjoy a trip back to Dearborn Music tagging along with him as well. Since my frequent flyer days, they have moved to a new location (actually, fairly recently). I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the old location. With it's separate rooms, twists and turns, etc. It just felt cozier, or maybe I'm just being nostalgic. Not that there's anything wrong with the new location. It feels more traditionally record store. One big, flat room with lots of shelves and bins for looking through. Parking certainly is easier and I dig that Bigby is across the lot (I was in need of a warm beverage and a place to pee) and moving in next door to Goodwill was a brilliant idea. Perfect for suburbanite kewl kids looking to pick up the latest and greatest Pitchfork approved record and acid wash jeans (Is acid wash denim a hipster thing? I don't know, I'm not hip anymore. I'm listening to Taylor Swift as I type this and not in an ironic way). Great used CD selection, new CDs, not a huge collection of vinyl but what they have is good. Listening stations, used CD buy backs, a small collection of used DVDs a small but solid selection of music blurays, and music memorabilia like t-shirts, stickers, and the like. Takes me back to the pre-digital days and I like it. I was last in on a Saturday afternoon and there was a small group of folks digging through the bins and it made me happy. This shop has been a Dearborn spot for years and was originally located on Monroe st. At first I was apprehensive about the move to its new location but they managed to create a trendy hip space in a building that was far from. Dearborn does not have many places with that kind of vibe so this is a nice change of pace from the usual businesses that are in the area. To go with the cool decor it is also a great place to find classic vinal, cd's and cool paraphernalia! This place gives you the full musical experience of buying the music you want with the smells of a record shop, the hunt to find the album, and the ability to feel the music which In today's digital age where songs can be downloaded at a touch of a button (at least to me) is inspiriting. read more

I love this place, they always have records I've been looking for (or ones I didn't know I was looking for). The new used arrivals always has some prime albums among them. The only thing that I HATE about this place is their fucking PRICE STICKERS. They are impossible to get off and to be honest a lot of the records are kind of expensive, if I'm paying a premium price for used records I better be able to get these god damn stickers off. So please, if anyone who works there reads this, get some new price stickers or lower your prices if you're going to ruin the sleeves with your stickers. read more

I visited Dearborn Music for the first time with my boyfriend a few weeks ago. I was pleasantly surprised, as this was my first time inside a record store. Let's just say it was so far different from Urban Outfitters. I was surprised how big this place was! There was a large selection of records a merch. I spent like 20 minutes looking through all the t-shirts. The t-shirts averaged about $20. I'm not too sure if that's expensive or inexpensive. I guess it'd have to depend on the person. The associates were helpful and attentive. The customer service was great! One of the associates (I'm assuming he was the manager) offered to create a deal for us. This place was pretty cool. Almost reminded me of like an old-school Blockbuster, but for vinyl and CDs. I went here with someone who has been going here for a long time, and he's obsessed with it :). I had a fun time browsing through the DVDs (most are used) and he looked through the vinyl and the CDs. I will say the DVDs are a little pricier, IMO (they range from like $5.97-$6.97, not counting the collections) but the atmosphere is cool to browse in (vs. like the $5 bin at Walmart). They also have cassette tapes and everything from games to little presents (magnets, etc.) - they had this Godfather card game that looked pretty cool. I'll probably be back here at some point (with that same person, LOL) to browse for a bit. read more

Went there for the first time today. I got some great used records and picked up a couple of new ones. Staff was friendly and helpful. The good: staff, selection, it's a pretty fun place to browse. Also they have $4 mystery bags with 5 LPs (they all sucked but one of the bags had a $5 gift card so that was cool. Every Sunday they put out a huge selection of new arrivals. The not so good: prices are definitely on the higher end for their used stuff - the new albums I bought were well priced. There is no dollar bin, I'm happy to pay for a record I want but I do love to browse a good dollar bin too! The absolute worst part are their price stickers. You won't get them off cleanly. It's the first thing I do when I get home from a store when I buy used. These ones are permanent. They really need to rethink that. As for CDs they have a huge CD selection but the prices seemed way high to me considering the fall of the CD as a format. I'd still go back. Found stuff there that I wanted . read more

This is probably one of the best record stores I've ever been to. I've been coming here (or their previous location) since I moved to Michigan in 2002. This is one of the most well organized record stores I've been to. With a phenomenally wide variety of both new and used media, along with all the necessities to play that media, that you will ever need. As well as band and entertainment merchandise. As far as price, I've seen a few reviews griping about price. Compared to auction site prices (ie ebay), they are far less expensive. These prices allow them to pay the seller a halfway decent price for their collections. And DM does have an amazing variety in every genre you could want. Also follow their social media feeds to know what's going on weekly. Like their sales (which happen monthly), New Arrival Sundays (the latest used records they've received), or New Music Fridays (new releases). You will always be in the know. Dearborn Music recently moved to a strip mall less than a mile from its old location. It's a very large, open space with plenty of employees available to ask questions. My husband and I have been several times already to continue building our vinyl collection. We're finding their prices on new vinyl are within $1-3 of Amazon.com's prices, so we feel it's better to help the "little guy" than buy online when we can. I still feel some of their vinyl prices are extremely high, but that's when we exercise our right to purchase elsewhere. I really respect the employees for being so accommodating. A friend of ours knows how much we love Regina Spektor, and purchased us her 7" from Dearborn Music that was featured on Record Store Day 2012. Unfortunately, it had horrible surface noise, so we took it up to Dearborn Music and they cleaned and diagnosed it for us even though we didn't have the receipt. Unfortunately, the record was ruined by the packaging, but I appreciated their effort in trying to clean it and the education they provided about picture discs (always store them in a paper sleeve!). The new space is worth checking out, whether you already love Dearborn Music or come as a first-timer. read more

My review of their old location: "Dearborn Music is what a record store should be in my opinion. Fair prices, good selection and good service. I buy a good amount of new vinyl here and their pricing is excellent, usually close to prices you'd find on Amazon which is quite a feat for small box "little guy" stores. On top of that, they regularly throw sales which make the pricing even lower than many online outlets. Pricing on used vinyl has been going up lately but that's capitalism right? :) The only reason I'm not throwing 5 stars at this review is because of a common complaint I've heard from people I've referred to Dearborn Music. Almost every person I've sent there has complained that no one ever asked them if they wanted help. I can't stress enough that I'm not bothered at all by not being asked if I want help because I usually know what I'm looking for or want to look through the records on my own. But as I said, many people I've sent there have complained about it so I thought I'd at least include it in the review." Update for new location: I loved the old store but the more I shop at the new store, the more I like it better. Free parking is also a plus. I bumped my score up to a 5 now as well. I won't go into a ton of detail, other than to say I've visited every store in the metro area multiple times. Every time I went into Dearborn Music I felt like I was in a huge, old, late 1980s record store. Tons of CDs, lots of records, but most of everything is new (which might be good for some people, but not really my cup of tea). The used selection is good but the prices are about as high as they get for used stuff and it's mostly common rock records (and almost everything is dumped into the 'rock' section, everything from new wave to James Taylor). You'll find vintage Beatles pressings, but you'll pay for them. Jazz, R&B, and World Music exist here but in very small quantities. I found a couple winners in the $1 bin, but nothing stunning. The biggest thing that drove me CRAZY is they put the price tags directly on the jackets of the used items! So, you'll buy a sweet 60s press of a record with an awesome cover...and there's a price tag on the jacket cover! Come ON! I'm super careful when removing price tags but I tore 2 covers because of their stupidity in putting the tags on the artwork. I was so mad I called and was like "what are you doing??!?" Anyway, the store is 'fine' if you want to pay full price for new and used records (or CDs I guess...). I never make a special trip, there's way better stores in the area, but I stop in and poke around if I drive by. read more

took some records there and was surprised at how I was treated especially knowing the selection they have and how historical it is locally. maybe it's because of the luster of its name, Dearborn music in reality is really shady when it comes to record exchanges. their team either knows too little or too much knowledge and for sure take advantage of that when it comes to record buying and selling. I even had one employee brag to me that they were going to blatantly flip my most expensive record and refused to accept any new price after giving me a set price and allowed no wiggle room. finally I was told one price from one person but got another sum of cash in return when I went to cash out. while my knowledge of vinyls and vinyl exchange is getting better from this experience for any new vinyl sellers don't give them your records, find another local store that dont gloat about how much they're gonna make off of flipping your vinyl. or better yet use discogs. wont be going back. read more

I came here looking for jazz and boy was I rewarded. The jazz in the bins was kind of what you'd usually find, but the jazz I found in the boxes behind the bins was *incredible*. Loads and loads of records from recent local acquisitions, several of which are the ones I can't find because a store's collection is often picked over. I bought probably 30+. Big day for me. I went to 15 record stores in Detroit looking for used jazz and this was the best. read more

Had some spare time before my flight so dropped in this Record Store. WOW! What a great surprise! HUGE selection of Pre-loved vinyl at modest prices. Parking was easy in the lot right out front of the store. I just wish I had more time to browse. All genres, well catalogued, and easy to search bins (no kneeling on the floor). Other fun things for sale, too much to list, but did have a pretty extensive Tee shirt inventory. I highly recommend this store to any vinyl (new or used) collector. Will definitely make time to visit on my next trip to Detroit! read more

A local treasure with a huge selection of CD's and vinyl. The staff are courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. They will special order pretty much anything in print, and in many cases are willing to track down rare and hard to find items for you as well. On several occasions I have mentioned titles or artists I was interested in and Dave has contacted me as soon as they became available. This place is truly one of the best places in the Metro Area to shop for music, movies and high-end audio equipment. I have been a patron at Dearborn Music for many years, and consider it my first choice for everything from Bach to Zappa. Support your local record store by giving this place a try. If you're really sad that Sam Goody closed and you no longer have a place to purchase incense and/or Beatles pint glasses then Dearborn music is the place for you. They have coasters, posters, jellybeans,bobbleheads, t-shirts, mugs and music. Yes, that. But honestly, the selection here is not amazing and neither is the prices. Both new and used vinyl. Both overpriced. Lots of reissues and a lot of mainstream stuff. If you don't want to dig... This is the place for you. CD's too. New and used. They have them too. Wasn't on a DVD hunt but I spotted a few. If you don't mind spending a few extra bucks for a Rubber Soul reissue and you live in the area, you hit the jackpot. If you're looking for something super weird or to save a few bucks, save yourself the trip. read more

They have a nice selection, the store is very tidy and well-organized, the staff is knowledgeable, and it's an institution that's been around a long time. It's not a bad place. But it isn't what I look for in a record shop. If you want a place to go dig through piles of albums and score some deals, you'll be disappointed. But of you're looking for a quality copy of any common album you could possibly want along with a fair assortment of rarities and local music at prices usually significantly higher than they sell online because you need it now, this place will serve you well. My major issue with Dearborn Music though is their price tag material. It's an extremely adhesive sticker that, unless you're really careful and good with Goo-Gone (which can easily stain covers), WILL tear albums 90+% of the time. Sometimes they put the tag inside the sleeve, which is fine if you're going to leave it on or don't mind tearing the inside a bit pulling it off, but a majority of albums are either going to have a large upc code price tag on them permanently, or are going to be disfigured in an effort to remove them. If anyone knows a method of removing them please let me know - maybe a hair dryer would help or something. Overall, Dearborn Music isn't terrible - it draws a lot of suburban types with disposable income for good reason. They're selective of what they buy and price accordingly. It's a fun place to spend an hour looking around, but a few issues keep it from being a 5* place in my book. read more

I am really happy that this place is still around. I thought they closed a couple years ago because the location that I always knew about and went to ever since I was a kid is now a new restaurant. But then I saw them advertised at an event at Sacred Heart and was shocked to see their new location right across the street from the church. I went in yesterday and it's the same Dearborn Music but better and bigger. That says a lot about a record store that not only stays in business but expands. I love how they even still have the handwritten tabs of the different bands. I could spend hours in this place and the customer service is great, so friendly and helpful. This place has always been a staple music store in Dearborn with a wide selection of new and used CDs, cassettes, collectibles, records (old and new). I have no complaints about Dearborn Music as it is THE place to go in the metro Detroit Wayne county downriver southeastern Michigan area to buy music in a variety of different formats. My best friend recently purchased an Audio Technica record player from here for a reasonable price and it's of very high quality. I come here often to browse their selections of a wide variety of different genres of music and will continue to for the foreseeable future. read more

My first reaction upon entering the newer location was "I've been here before. But not as Dearborn Music." As I wandered around, it felt more and more like an amalgam of Harmony House and Musicland, that also happened to carry used items. CD's galore, along with a huge selection of t-shirts and some licensed knickknacks. I was especially delighted to see blocks of real listening stations -- ones where you can listen to the actual CD, instead of 30-second mp3 samples (Sidenote: I'm pretty sure the MP3 sample kiosks are one of the reasons you're dead, corporate music stores.) Prices on new CD's were really reasonable. Lots of new releases going for around $11.99, which is pretty decent for something I can take home immediately. I liked it as an "all things to all people" music store, but Dearborn Music definitely isn't the place to go if you're looking for a shrine to vinyl. The used vinyl section is trying hard. But, it seems to exist solely as a magnet for people like me, who came for some old records, and got lured in by the listening stations on the way to the very back of the store. Once you get back there, the albums are crammed in too tightly, and the organization is trash. (Seriously? You put Isaac Hayes under "Rock"?) Worse, though, is that Dearborn Music seems to think that all vinyl is inherently rare and valuable. Really common stuff that you'd pick up down Michigan Avenue at Stormy Records for $3.99 costs $6.99 here, and may not be in as good condition. In spite of my contentions with their vinyl section, the store itself is pretty great, if a little too sanitary for my taste. read more

Dearborn music really is a great store. I like the new location, it looks very clean and organized. Plus parking is free at the new site. Good selection of used vinyl and CDs, lots of new vinyl (recent releases and reissues of older records), staff is friendly and informative. Chances are that you'll always find something worth buying. Their prices are good, about what you would expect, and sometimes they'll have a sale and good discounts. I always had a good time going to this store, spending an hour or two, browsing through their music collection, looking for the next exciting find for my collection. read more

Nice, roomy location that's much easier to navigate compared to the old store. The store stock is still about 3/4 CDs and 1/4 vinyl, though the vinyl selection is still good. However, the pricing on both new and used vinyl is way out of line. $25 for each of the Johnny Cash American Recordings? Come on! Most of the used jazz (my forte) is $4-8 higher than you would see at Street Corner in Southfield, and a few buck higher than Stormy just a few miles away. For this reason, I probably wouldn't stop in here too often. read more
