Third Man Records is less of a record store and more of an experience. You know when you walk in somewhere and you just think, "Someone spent a LONG time thinking through every inch of this place?" That's Third Man Records. The space is absolutely immaculately thought out. The color scheme, the store layout, the displays...everything is arranged in a way to create a very memorable experience for guests. I can't pretend that I am even remotely cool enough to have anything to say about the quality of the music they sell. However, I can tell you that I was impressed by how much there is to admire in the space. They even have a little window where you can watch them pressing the vinyl in the back. Very interesting! One important thing to know: Third Man Records sells music made under their record label. You are NOT going to find the latest Taylor Swift vinyl here! Regardless, Third Man Records is definitely a must-see spot in the Detroit area! read more

Fabulous Yelp tour! Third Man Records was launched by Jack White in Detroit in 2001, and in 2009 opened its Nashville location. In 2015 its Detroit location was opened, housing a record and novelties lounge, mastering studio, and Third Man Pressing manufacturing facility. Salem and Brie were great stewards, providing both background and educational insight into the record-making process. There is an "introductory" lecture, and then you are walked through the plant while it is in operation, stopping at the various work-stations involved in the pressing, inspection, and packaging processes, where each step is explained in detail. You are also taken into the recording room, where recovered and rare 1970's equipment is used to create the master disc. As of this writing, the 30-60 minute tours are only on Fridays at 1 and 3 pm, and cost $15/person. The groups are small because of the fact that you are taken onto the factory floor. Tickets go fast and can be purchased online and in-store while supplies last. read more

We have been to Third Man Records several times, but have never been able to take a tour. The tour was great. Our tour guide Salem was made for the job. She was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and genuinely invested in her job. The tour gives you a behind the scenes look at exactly how the records are pressed. I now have a much better understanding of the process. Bri was our second tour guide and was just as enthusiastic as Salem. We were able to walk up to the pressing machines and go into the live recording studio. I would have never guessed there were over 100 employees working in the building. We weren't allowed to take pictures on the tour, due to privacy reasons. The tours are very limited and only scheduled on a Friday. We had 5 people on our tour. Space is tight in the pressing area, so it seems like a larger group would be difficult. The tour lasts about 45 minutes. I had to watch the website carefully to schedule and was able to schedule a week in advance. The tour fee is currently $15 per person. At the end of the tour we were given a 45. Very Fun! read more

Yelp wouldn't let me check in, but I enjoyed my visit. I am so happy that this place helped the younger generation learn that music should be played on records whenever you can. Much richer music. The clerks were friendly and enjoyed talking to someone who could be their old mother. No one was playing on the stage when I visited but if that person or group were we shouldn't be able to have a conversation. Glad I stopped. Of course the place has a museum-like feel to it and is laid out quite well. As the name implies, they manufacture records here. At the back of the store front you can see folks physically making records in production facilities. There are plenty of apparel and gifts to look over and purchase if you so choose. I got a killer enamel coated metal coffee cup and pint glass. If you are in the Detroit area this is a fun ace to check out. If your a Jake White fan, it's icing on the cake! You will notice the copious use of the yellow and black color scheme throughout. Even the Apple hardware was specially made in Yellow! Have fun! read more

Full disclosure, I have no idea who Jack White is, but he is a musician who owns this establishment. AND THIS IS NOT A RECORD SHOP. IT'S A RECORD LABEL THAT SELLS RECORDS of their artest, for the most part. However, I am a vinyl fanatic! I went in for the tour of how vinyl records are made and was BLOWN AWAY it was an experience I will never forget. The tour guides were extremely insightful and fully immersed everyone in the experience. My only wish is that they had a section for local Detroit artists on vinyl. I honestly had no clue who the ppl were on vinyl that they were selling, which kept my $$ in my pocket. The souvenirs were wayyy over priced $6 for a book of matches. $10 for a sticker was insane. For any lover of the medium of vinyl when it comes to music needs to venture to Third Man Records. This mecca gives a glimpse into the art of pressing records from vinyl. A window into that world showcases the machinery, multitude of current production and wall showcasing the current work schedule of upcoming albums to complete. As a vinyl record enthusiast and appreciator, this was a special place to visit. I could have stood at that window for an hour taking in what was in front of me. A real bucket list location to experience. Of course, not only do they manufacture records here, but provide a lounge, stage, musical instruments that can be played (I believe) and a host of memorabilia to purchase. But the best part, the opportunity to purchase what they make here. From rows of singles of bands 45's to various sections of complete records. Yes, the White Stripes and Jack White records are here in multitudes, but for me, I walked away with a Pharos Sanders records. Was thrilled to take this home. There is no cost to enter, the records are of a very fair value and worth taking home you favorite copy of anything they sell. Honestly, if money was no object, I would have taken it all home. A truly special place for any music lover to land at. Detroit you made this music fans trip. Grateful to have seen this place up close. read more

If you're a music lover, Third Man is definitely worth a trip. They have cool special releases off the Third Man label, from White Stripes stuff and Detroit area bands to Sun Records specials and more. There are a ton of things at different price points (from 7 inch singles for a few bucks to box sets in the hundreds of dollars) so you can get a gift or something for yourself no matter your budget. Plus really rad schwag (t-shirts, pins, tote bags, etc) makes great gifts and/or stocking stuffers around the holidays. More than just a shop it's also a really cool spot to spend some time. The store is spacious and fun with lots of interesting art/posters to look at crossing several genres. They also have a stage and host music or live book readings on the regular (check their website for a schedule of events). There's also a cool photo booth and a recording booth (record your own record for $20!) for some cool interactives/takeaways. Also, the new pressing plant is AMAZING. I was lucky enough to attend the grand opening and got to walk the floor and it was cool as hell. I believe they host tours so check it out. Or you can see the magic happen from the viewing platform in the shop. One of my favorite spots in Detroit. Definitely give it a visit when you're in the area! read more

We wanted my niece to experience some of Detroit before she went back to school in Savannah. We sort of went with the flow as far as the evening went. He wanted her to experience this unique record shop as she is very into music and vinyl. This very unique shop was founded by Jack White in Detroit in 2001 and then later, in 2009, brought to Nashville as well. There is so much to see there! Toms of great novelty items. Hard to find records. Vintage stuff as far as the eye can see. It's like a museum in that regard. I had a lot of questions and the employees were quick to answer. They also seemed to enjoy answering questions. In the back of the store you can watch the process of them making the records as well as some interesting things made out of the records. My niece is an art major so she really enjoyed showing me how they made records into bowls and roses. She has a hobby of painting records and will paint your favorite so you can display it. We all have records that have warped but we loved anyway. She is amazingly talented. She loved this ship and enjoyed visiting here. Maybe it's because I'm not a Jack White fanboy but this place is weird. Everything is a black, white and yellow "curated experience"... It feels like Instagram Disneyland for 40-something hipsters that think they're too cool for actual Disneyland. When you enter the store, you find yourself in the midst of a gift shop of t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and the like, and you need to wade through it until you get to the back of the store where all of the actual records are. It's just kinda...weird. Very corporate feeling, especially on top of all that monied #aesthetic. But I mean, that is what it is I guess, so I don't know what I was expecting really? What is cool about this place is that in the WAY back you can watch a buncha guys with beards behind glass make the vinyl and that's fun. There's also bathrooms here, which I imagine are really for when they do live shows but I appreciated at like 2pm on a Thursday. There's a bunch of exclusive singles that ol Jack made with his buddies, and his buddies of course are all super cool artists I like so he definitely hooked me to spend some money. Also the people who work here are supremely nice, and I appreciate that in what otherwise feels like a snobbish space (which might just have to do with its location next to to Shinola and other rich-white-people delights). If you like Jack White, you'll love it. If you like music, there's a good amount of things after you get through the 'gift shop.' read more

Third Man Records is always an interesting to place to visit if you are a fan of music, records, the Jack White aesthetic, etc. I have been to the one in Nashville a few times, but this was my first visit to the one in Detroit. It was much larger than the one in Nashville, and the really cool feature was that you could watch people that work there produce records. They were all wearing these really cool jumpsuits. There are also some lovely original artwork pieces on the walls. The staff and store upkeep is very nice as well. I can't imagine staying there more than 15 minutes, but I'm also not as hip as I once was. read more

It's so silly to say that I feel as close as I can to Jack White when I walk through the doors. But I do, and I smile like I'm listening to Little Room or Hotel Yorba. So many memories are tied into the music and I'm reminded of all of it as I twist and turn through the store. We bought vinyl today, had to, seemed a sacrilege not to. I gazed at the pressing room, accepting that in all my life I'll never understand how sound transfers to vinyl. Hats off to those who do. I love this store so much! If you are a Jack White fan it is nirvana. Could have stayed a long time but just stopped in with my whole extended family. Rocked out with my kid in the listening room after a nice worker helped me with the turntable controls. You can sing and press your own vinyl single but the booth was out of order. The merch is all White Stripes memorabilia. Hoping to come back for a pressing tour someday soon. read more

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't "get" this place. When I read "third man records" I thought it was going to be a cool record store. It's about 70% useless jack white merch and 30% records from a bunch of small artists I've never heard of. I guess they only sell artists under their label, which is confusing if you are going in assuming it's a regular record store. I don't think I saw any familiar names other than The White Stripes (of course). I guess it's because I'm not a die hard Jack White fan? But this was definitely more of a venue/merch shop than a record store. It was really, really weird. The one complaint I've seen in many of the reviews is regarding customer service, which is literally nonexistent. The girl behind the counter just stared at us as we walked around the store in confusion, almost as though she was waiting for us to leave. If you were walking in Detroit and saw this place in passing without knowing anything about it, I highly doubt you'd find any value in it, especially since the employees inside have 0 desire to educate you on the store you are in. Super boutique/corporate feel with unfriendly employees. I would have never even known they offered tours or live events if I didn't read it in the reviews. If one of the employees mentioned that the press wasn't going but I can come back for a live tour, they probably could have sold me on it. But I didn't even know that was a thing until AFTER I left. Very disappointed considering we drove over an hour to come here. read more
