2 reviews. Record Store: Prefer the professionally mixed records over the store recorded albums. Clothes overpriced, but paying the JW premium. The store only sells label albums and selection is small. Concert venue: small and intimate. That said, no AC. Feels like I am seeing a concert in a greenhouse.

Founded by Jack White of the White Stripes, this record shop offers an array of music, apparel and gifts. Specializing in Independent artists and live shows. You can also book a tour of the record pressing process. Metered street parking is available. Whether your an avid music fan or not, this is a must visit when in the Detroit area.

A must see stop for any music fan when visiting Detroit is this unique record store that is also a vinyl pressing facility. It was launched by Jack White in 2001. Tours are offered of the pressing operation but not on the day we visited. Staff were nice about answering questions. In addition to records they sell clothing, gear, books and hold various events which are listed on their website. Very cool experience.

Absolute must-see in Detroit! Beyond any love or no-live you feel for Jack White, Third Man is the only live venue recording directly to vinyl- you can be at those recordings or you can come and take a tour of the vinyl pressing plant- (yes they are hand pressing and packaging albums right in front of you) This is the coolest of the cool places to take visitors to Detroit or just to educate your kids on how music is made Merch is pretty fab too

Fabulous Yelp tour! Third Man Records was launched by Jack White in Detroit in 2001, and in 2009 opened its Nashville location. In 2015 its Detroit location was opened, housing a record and novelties lounge, mastering studio, and Third Man Pressing manufacturing facility. Salem and Brie were great stewards, providing both background and educational insight into the record-making process. There is an "introductory" lecture, and then you are walked through the plant while it is in operation, stopping at the various work-stations involved in the pressing, inspection, and packaging processes, where each step is explained in detail. You are also taken into the recording room, where recovered and rare 1970's equipment is used to create the master disc. As of this writing, the 30-60 minute tours are only on Fridays at 1 and 3 pm, and cost $15/person. The groups are small because of the fact that you are taken onto the factory floor. Tickets go fast and can be purchased online and in-store while supplies last.

We have been to Third Man Records several times, but have never been able to take a tour. The tour was great. Our tour guide Salem was made for the job. She was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and genuinely invested in her job. The tour gives you a behind the scenes look at exactly how the records are pressed. I now have a much better understanding of the process. Bri was our second tour guide and was just as enthusiastic as Salem. We were able to walk up to the pressing machines and go into the live recording studio. I would have never guessed there were over 100 employees working in the building. We weren't allowed to take pictures on the tour, due to privacy reasons. The tours are very limited and only scheduled on a Friday. We had 5 people on our tour. Space is tight in the pressing area, so it seems like a larger group would be difficult. The tour lasts about 45 minutes. I had to watch the website carefully to schedule and was able to schedule a week in advance. The tour fee is currently $15 per person. At the end of the tour we were given a 45. Very Fun!

Yelp wouldn't let me check in, but I enjoyed my visit. I am so happy that this place helped the younger generation learn that music should be played on records whenever you can. Much richer music. The clerks were friendly and enjoyed talking to someone who could be their old mother. No one was playing on the stage when I visited but if that person or group were we shouldn't be able to have a conversation. Glad I stopped. This is a must stop for anyone visiting Detroit.

Super cool store and factory! I bought a record from a live recording at their Nashville location. The workers are all super nice and helpful too. Definitely a great local business to support. I also love that Detroit is only one of three locations!

Third Man Records brought a breath of life back into Detroit's vinyl scene. They are now considered a Detroit staple. The storefront is located on Canfield in Cass next to Shinola. The store is huge & awesome. There are plenty of records to dig through & merch to grab up. The staff is friendly & upbeat. Go check out Third Man Records!

Third Man Records in Detroit, Michigan was super-cool! Didn't know what to expect but from the outside in Jack White and folks got it go'n on. Of course the place has a museum-like feel to it and is laid out quite well. As the name implies, they manufacture records here. At the back of the store front you can see folks physically making records in production facilities. There are plenty of apparel and gifts to look over and purchase if you so choose. I got a killer enamel coated metal coffee cup and pint glass. If you are in the Detroit area this is a fun ace to check out. If your a Jake White fan, it's icing on the cake! You will notice the copious use of the yellow and black color scheme throughout. Even the Apple hardware was specially made in Yellow! Have fun!

Full disclosure, I have no idea who Jack White is, but he is a musician who owns this establishment. AND THIS IS NOT A RECORD SHOP. IT'S A RECORD LABEL THAT SELLS RECORDS of their artest, for the most part. However, I am a vinyl fanatic! I went in for the tour of how vinyl records are made and was BLOWN AWAY it was an experience I will never forget. The tour guides were extremely insightful and fully immersed everyone in the experience. My only wish is that they had a section for local Detroit artists on vinyl. I honestly had no clue who the ppl were on vinyl that they were selling, which kept my $$ in my pocket. The souvenirs were wayyy over priced $6 for a book of matches. $10 for a sticker was insane. Yes, I wanted to purchase, but the sticker shock sent me away empty-handed.

Beautiful store. We loved wandering around and watching records being made. Bought some excellent souvenirs - magnets, shirts, records, guitar strap, pint glass. Located in a very cool university neighborhood.

Straight up, Go here. Especially if you're a Jack White fan because this is his store. What better place to get a fresh, new album than right off the press, literally. Plus, it's obviously less expensive. Lots of trinkets to get here. The store's decor theme is black and yellow. It looks good. As the cashier said it was "On purpose? On point?" Something cool like that she stated, but I can't remember now. Darnit. If you're in the D, not the Big D, stop in and check it out. They'll probably be pressing records when you do. Cool! Cool! Cool!

But cheap doesn't always necessarily mean good - I could always shop for "cheap" at the Walmart bargain bin. What the RG brings to the table is quality records for a price that can't be beat. I was having a conversation about the graveyard with a friend of mine who's really into Jazz; he only has a few places he likes, basically because so few places carry quality Jazz these days. You know how picky those old fans can get. He took me here first. I'm not a Jazz hipster like him, but I do like records - and oh, they have a ton. I snagged quite a bit for very little - some records were as Misi said, literally $1. Even the new releases were inexpensive. I'm accustomed to paying over $20 per record sometimes for that "audiophile grade vinyl" junk. That doesn't seem to happen here unless its rare. So it didn't break the bank. It seems like they have a good rotation of stock going. I can see myself easily coming back at least once a week and not looking at the same old junk over and over again. It's like the thrift shop of records!

Found Sound has that wonderful mix of just about everything, and their prices are actually more than reasonable. The difference here however is the crew. So many places have staff that vacillate between casual indifference to active dislike. Found Sound has a team that genuinely cares about your experience, and are actually happy to talk to you. I recently was perusing their soundtrack selection and found a copy I of an album I wanted. I noticed what I thought were scratches on one side, and asked the team member about it. He immediately confirmed they were light scratches and marked the price down accordingly. I can't imagine every place would be honest in this way. About the only negative of shopping here are the narrow pathways, but honestly it just means they've got more stuff for you to look at when you're there. I'm so glad I stopped in, you can bet I'll be back!
