Easily my favorite record store in Detroit. Parking can be tricky but worth it. A great selection of Jazz and R&B in all prices ranges. Check out the bins below for great bargains. Peoples is an institution from what I understand in Detroit and has a good mix of all the major music genres along with a section of dance and electronic based music. I would say it's about 95% used from what I saw and the largest selection of 45s that I've ever seen. There were two turntables available to checkout records already open/unsealed which was nice. You could easily spend a few hours here as I did. I walked away with an Amp Fiddler and Will Sessions album that I had been looking for so all the digging and listening worked out in my favor. Prices here are very reasonable and the store personnel are super nice. There are some. I've murals on the buildings just across the street so be sure to check them out. Glad I got the opportunity to stop by on this trip to "The D". read more

Absolutely horrible. Staff is horrible owner is worse. I walked 3 hours ...85 degrees... it's how I get my steps as I travel for work. Was pleasantly surprised with the potential. Asked if there was a restroom and was told by the older lady yes... and then said ... your dripping something?? Thought it might be be sweat since I was soaked from the walk. But they decided I HAD AN ACCIDENT! lol. Lady kept giving me death stares and saying crap to me... verbatim... I dunno what kinda sweat u got . When I tried to check out my dozen album stack I asked to talk to the owner. He was a jerk. And told me I had an accident and was covering it up kinda now wish I had. Declined to sell me my stack because altho I had been NOTHING but respectful.. and could NOT figure this out... asked what I wanted him to do and I said just hear me:) when I left.. I realized one of my water bottles leaked or sweated through MY CANVAS VINYL BAG I carry on trips. Sooooooo sorry.... These people are horrid. I'm one of those guys who NEVER stopped spinning vinyl. After experiencing my first record store two weeks ago, I was excited to visit People's Records, in Detroit. I also realized how insane it is to find the 5th Dimensions of vinyl. However, I am thankful People's Records had one in their new arrivals collection -- for $2. Wow! They also suggested another artist group but, I my heart is sold out on The 5th Dimensions. The guys who works here know their records and is quick to help you find what you are looking for. I must say it seems as if they have their store organized as much as possible and MASKS ARE REQUIRED. LOL! read more

I'm not sure why I didn't anticipate how great this store would be, knowing Motown was made in Detroit... but alas, I was pleasantly surprised! This record store has a huge selection of Motown, funk, and soul music. All the records were affordable (like I think the most expensive one was $8), and were in good condition. There's a huge 45 section in the back corner as well. Now a big heads up, this place didn't have a ton of NEW artist, or records. This definitely was a more of an "I've been looking for an old school record from the 70s" versus "Man I'm looking for an artist from the Millennium" type of place. Also a thing to note--- is that masks are required. This was one of my favorite record stores I've been too. If you are into old school music, this is the spot for you. This review is for a visit pre-covid. We LOVE record stores. Top on our list of things that rank a record store high are diversity of selection, range of prices, bargain bin, and the most important: friendly and knowledgeable staff. This store is located near Eastern Market, so if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. The aisles were a bit narrow for my wheelchair scooter, but it worked. You head in and are COMPLETELY blown away by the offerings! There are two main rooms: a front room (bargains to the left) with the cash register, and then the back room with a listening area and the bulk of the vinyl. We bought WAY too many records, which I note was caused by two things: selection (!!!!) and the extremely interesting woman that helped us. She found records we were searching for, some we didn't know we needed, and gave us tips on other vinyl on our list, and added TO our list. THIS? She is the hallmark of a great store, and the main reason we'll be back! read more

I'll just start by saying that I only had time for one record store stop when I was in Detroit, and I couldn't be happier that I chose Peoples Records for that stop. The basics: * Ample street parking, although it is metered * Mask policy is actively enforced * Employees are knowledgeable and helpful, but don't linger over your shoulder unless you ask for assistance (love this) * Huge selection of Motown records, this is to be expected in Detroit but if you're looking for them in particular as I was, this store is a great place to go * Very chill vibe, the employees were spinning some great vinyls while I was there * Did I mention a very good selection? After a day of jury duty in downtown Detroit I saw People's Records on my way back home. I have to hit up any record store with vinyl I come across. This is an amazing shop. The owner is super laid back and always up to taking music with anyone who comes in the door. He also will work with you and give you a good deal. The other employees are helpful and easy to talk too. They have a great selection of vinyl, and specialize in jazz and soul music. But they have a big selection of other genres of music. They have a cool selection of dance music too and good selection on 12" singles. This is a place to just dig through stacks of records. It is a good old school record shop. I can spend a lot of time digging good through the stacks. I recommend this place to any one who is a vinyl collector. I have been there two more times and each time coming home with some cool records read more

What Detroit needs, besides a never-ending spate of responsible leadership, is more records stores like this one. My feet led me from an empty street into a room stuffed with music. Love when that happens! I stood still for a minute or so, flanked by boxes and boxes of vinyl records, getting my bearings as I inhaled that sweet sweet old-record sleeve smell. And what of the flanks? Lots of LPs, TONS of 45s, all genres. I have never seen so many 45s! Soul, jazz, R&B, rock. Dollah bins with Patsy Cline and other jewels (if you're a DJ like me). Plus, the boxes are quite attractive in their own right, each boasting a colorful and eclectic paint job that identifies what treasures lie within. For crate diggers, this place is a joy. Particularly if soul is your thing. Brad (the owner) is a cool guy whose knowledge of soul music is prodigious. ...and here is where I admit my weakness for in-store pooches. Sigh. This one was friendly and non-intrusive. It was hard deciding whether to continue petting her or dive into the free jazz section (it only took a minute or so before I predictably dove). I really hope more shops like People's sprout up amongst the scattered empty lots that are all too numerous in Detroit. read more

This is the best record store in Detroit, brad is a great guy who not only gives the customer a great deal, but also is completely honest and very genorous with those who come in to sell their records to him. This isn't something you see very often in most record stores, especially when there are records worth hundreds or thousands of dollars involved... most buyers will give someone who doesn't know the value of their rare records next to nothing and then sell it on eBay. When you first walk in the store, they have 1 main room with racks & racks of 45s in these separate white shoe boxes with different titles like "Pop/Vocal, Doo Wop, Garage, Punk, Indie Rock"). They have a very nice jazz section, but don't forget to look around your feet because there's more vinyl down there too. They have an entire wall with Motown 45s, too. Then, there's the upstairs portion of the store where you have 3 separate rooms full of vinyl (1 room is huge, the other 2 are like the size small bedrooms). The 1 huge room is loaded with stuff that isn't sorted much, but from my inspection of it today, looks like it's mostly early dance music and r&b. Only go in that room if you have a whole hour to spend looking. The other 2 rooms are sorted much better and in 1 of them you'll find a cool section of psych rock & punk. It's small, but it's really cool stuff in that room! Overall, I would recommend only going to People's if you're looking for Motown, jazz, and obscure punk music. If I was in the mood for punk right now, then I would've bought the whole crate (full of bands that I haven't heard of). Personally, I won't be going to People's very often because their selections are very limited. I found a lot of Chicago, Bee Gee's and jazz LPs, but I couldn't find the stuff I wanted like Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane, Black Sabbath, or even The Doors. *FYI, they only have a few new LPs. This isn't a negative to me, but I just wanted to put it out there. read more

Full disclosure: High Fidelity is my favorite movie of all time. Today, at People's Records, I just had a real life High Fidelity experience (minus Jack Black, maybe next time). After getting buzzed in, I had a great conversation with the two guys working there that ranged from the local real estate, bars to hit and of course music. After reviewing some likes and dislikes, they took me upstairs where the records over $10 are (this used record store is a total steal, amazing stuff). I walked out with four Beatles albums to add to my slowly growing collection. Now they focus mainly on the local oldies, lots of jazz, blues, soul, etc. with an emphasis on 45s, so when classic rock comes in it moves pretty quick, but they always are getting more in. To Recap: The Good: Take the earphones off and go retro. Dust off the record player, sit in your dad's old lazy boy, smack your girl's rump as she walks by and jam out to some classic vinyl. There I just saved you $150 in therapist fees. You're welcome. The Bad: Great local selection, I would love more rock, but the dude abides. The Band This Store Most Resembles: Echo & The Bunnymen. It is perverse not to own some of this stuff. Get out there and enjoy it! read more

I don't even know where to start with the compliments. I am pleased, excited, and proud to call People's Records my favorite record store in the United States. And after four years, and eight migrations from the Southwest back to the Midwest, I have seen a lot the United States has to offer for 45's (most of it involves every bad record by Lionel Ritchie). All of it pales in comparison to Brad and Andy's generosity, patience and talent in the identification of classic and rare 45's. Especially in a day where a small number of people that are actually collecting 45's in the states. People's Records loyalty to Detroit and to their customers is honorable. I have picked up many records from People's that I have spent years searching for (mostly Jazz and Soul). Now, of course there are a lot of records in this small business. And they are not entirely sorted...but do yourself a favor and offer a hand to go through the records. Grab a pile or two! There might be some gems in there. I guarantee you will get a screaming deal on some very hard to find records! With that, if you have not checked out Peoples. Do it. Brad and Andy have always been accommodating and easy to talk to. If you come in with a great unpretentious attitude, you can expect the same in return. This is one of the few record stores left, where the owner actually cares about his store and his clients. UPDATED REVIEW: I will admit, that I was a bit harsh on People's in my original review and after a few more visits, my opinion has changed. I have, in the last three of seven visits, bought quite a few records from People's...maybe I caught the store on a bad week originally. The selection has become increasingly better with every visit to the store. On my last visit I purchased "Spillane" by John Zorn in perfect condition, probably only played once. Brad, keep-up the good work and keep buying. You have definitely created a very nice store in the new location and I am happy to be a customer...and find me some Art Ensemble of Chicago records!!! OLD REVIEW BELOW: (2 Star Rating) One of the more disappointing stores that I have visited in the area, People's Records has been hyped and over-hyped to death. Though they have a decent sized jazz section, it boasts little variety and caters mainly to bop, straight ahead and big band. Having heard that it was such an amazing store by so many people, this was a pretty big letdown. Not even an Anthony Braxton ECM standards record...sad. The classical section was pretty much garbage. Don't waste your time. If you are looking for soul, gospel, R&B and rock; you will not be disappointed. They have quite a selection and there are many unsorted boxes to dig through. Newly located on Woodward after the Forest Arms Apartment Building fire People's is back in action and I am beaming with excitement and glowing with happiness. Owned by DJ extraordinaire Brad Hales People's isDetroit's best record store by far. Why you ask? Well, Hales is always kind, helpful and freakishly knowledgeable about music and vinyl. What I love about People's is that they will always find you a gem that you never knew existed making you're record collection radder and you a bit happier. People's is a GREAT shop, and it is as central as it gets re: record stores. If you are looking for a good place to make your first foray into the 313 record shop world, this is a solid starting point. The store doesn't have the same space, flow or easily searchable dollar bins that it had at their previous location, but Peoples has lost none of it's killer selection of jazz and soul vinyl. That's thanks to Brad and the rest of the crew who keep the everyday junk out of their bins. They list some of the rarer vinyl on Discogs and eBay like most of the other record stores, but, unlike Record Graveyard, that stuff is still on the shelf, so you still have a chance to snag it if you walk in. The staff is pretty much hands off unless you ask for help, but they're super nice and really know their stuff. Plus, they have been known to give a deal if you're buying a stack of records. I am brand new to Michigan and since my move in January, I've been trying to find a record shop with great selection and minimal douchebag owners. Ladies and gentleman, People's is hands down one of the best record shops I have been to period. It almost surpasses my favorites back home that became weekly haunts. Let me break it down for you. SELECTION They have everything. Jazz, Rock, Blues, Soul, Country, whatever suits your mood. I collect 45s mostly, and I found a lot of great singles at an even better price. They literally have boxes and boxes of 45s lining the walls over the LP bins. At least 20 boxes of just motown, another 20 of classic soul, and an entire wall of early rock and roll. STAFF The guys I met (I shopped on a Saturday morning) were the opposite of every record shop employee I have ever come across. They were friendly, knowledgeable, not hung over/reeking of booze, and playing great music on the hi fi. What really impressed me, was when I asked a question about Little Walter, I got an answer about Little Walter, not 20 random trivia points about the blues to prove how much more they knew than me. I love early rock and roll and 60s rock, so a lot of times, when I bring my Beach Boys/Beatles/whatever else mainstream music I like to the counter at other places, the douchers behind the counter scoff. But here, they don't care, they just seem happy to see people enjoying vinyl still, and that's what a record store should be. Not some "look how cool I am, I bought this record to show my friends and never actually play it" place, but a hangout to chat about what you love. and I love vinyl damnit. PRICES Great! Not only did I get quality, original releases of some fine records, I also got them for no less than a couple bucks, most for .50 cents a pop. Also, since I bought a stack of them, the guy at the counter took five bucks off the total. Even though I unsuccessfully haggled for a few original Little Richard 45s, the discount for buying in bulk totally made up for it. People's, I want to thank you for doing what you do. Even though I live over an hour away, I plan to make regular trips to your store, just because you know how to take care of customers. Keep on doin' what you're doin' Oh, and P.S. thanks for having an awesome dog in the store. Peoples is located near the eastern market. This place is a treasure trove of assorted vinyl. They didn't have any tshirts or trinkets to purchase. This is vinyl and gear mostly. We were looking for some Motown to add to our collection. They had a large selection of Motown and a lot of jazz too. I found some great stuff in the 99 cent bins. You will need to do lots of digging to find the good stuff. Always check the condition of the records before purchase. They provide record players so you can test them. But, the $1 records are not allowed to be played at all. So you take your chances with the cheap records. They do have other genres of music, but they are more sparse. I would have given five stars, but I was put off by one of the employees. I had a huge stack of records and they were getting in the way (and heavy). I asked if there was somewhere I could set them down so I could continue to look. He sighed and said normally you hold onto your records but you can put them here, as he pointed to a record player on the counter. I almost walked out because that's pretty sh*tty. Anyway, this place redeemed itself in the end. We had $55 worth it records picked out and he let us have them for $45 cash. read more

I bought a record here for nearly 20 bucks that was on ebay for a penny plus 3.99 S&H a week later. And maybe I'm just not hipster enough to shop here but always ignore me when I come in.
