I dropped into this store on my daughter's and her boyfriend's advice because I was in Detroit for the evening and had an hour to kill. First, the owner is this righteous dude named Richie, who is super friendly and extremely helpful. Second, he had an excellent collection for great prices. The inventory was well-loved by previous owners. We chatted quite a bit about his classical bins that don't get the attention they deserve and the beauty of the music captured on those vinyl discs. Finally, THIS IS A LOCAL BUSINESS THAT DESERVES OUR RESPECT AND SUPPORT. While it may be significant that some record companies are reissuing vinyl, the prices can be outrageous at times, the reissues are limited, and sometimes, the new issues aren't quite engineered to the previous old-school standards. Alternatively, you can spend months combing through consignment and antique stores with small collections of records of unknown quality. Folks like Richie preserve an artistic legacy for us all simply out of passion. We need to step up and make sure that such stores thrive. read more

This is the best place. Richie, the owner, is not only the most knowledgeable dude, but he is super friendly. He loves to share his massive amount of wisdom, listen to good records, and get excited about things happening around him. He is often seen playing chess with customers or expounding about the latest 78's he has bought. He was described by Hour Detroit as a "beardier Ryan Gosling." He has an esoteric collection of records and books. Don't know what you are looking for? He will pull out something interesting for you, put it on his turntable and tell you the parts he likes about it. I've gotten countless recommendations from him, and they've all been spot on. His selection is a bit different than you'll find at threads and the record graveyard as well. If you're lucky, there will be a performance happening in the shop or in the lot next to the shop, from local and non-local bands as well. If you're in Hamtramck for any reason, stop by! One Night at Lo! and Behold... reminds me of a movie title. You feel like you have walked onto a movie set in this unique shop - but one where you have a part in the play. The crew is not going to scorn your sorry behind 'outa there....very inclusive, welcoming, hip, not stuffy, easy, breezy....Connection; connecting....Belonging. Not to mention the great selection of esoterica in books, records, vintage, mags, accessories. They will leave you alone if that's your thing. Do your best to support this establishment, please! Go there! Buy stuff! Have your own fun party-time with Ritchie or his customers/friends while you support what he is doing. I know I will be back. When I walk into Lo & Behold, I am usually on my way to or from somewhere else. And in these cases I am often late. I think to myself, I'll just pop in for a second to say hi to Richard and find out the name of the record that's playing right now with that electric guitar that sounds sweeter than honey infused blood to a mosquito on a hot July afternoon in the fourth street dog park. And who wouldn't want to hear a guitar that sweet again? Or at least know what album to look up when one needed to find out. Maybe I would ask casually about the latest projects. Perhaps a few more records would be played and discussed, then a volume from his latest recording project, then talk about the upcoming shows that he is hosting, plans for the future, and a recommendation for an album in a genre I've been starting to explore. And the story behind the album. And each of the musicians. And how they are related to musical history in Detroit. And how someone from that history is coming to play at the store one of these days soon because Richard managed to contact them. It all comes around full circle. And of course, purposefully choosing not to look at my watch, I ask more questions and begin more discussions down the fractaline path of our conversations in which I've learned far more about this city that I would have thought possible in an hour. And, realizing that I'm an hour later to wherever I'm going than I intended to be, I make moves to pay for my record and run out while attempting not to ask any of the 100 questions that I'm sure would all lead down an endless path of exciting discovery. And so now I am put in the position of the one thing I most hate to do in this city - speed on the highway. And yet, it's worth it. because Richard is one of these people who is truly engaged in Detroit in the way that brings joy to himself and those who come into his shop. I imagine that it is what keeps him alive. And it is this vitality is what you'll find, and what you'll feel, when you take a minute (or an hour) to browse around his store and listen to the stories and sounds of this wonderful city that he's collected. read more

A wide range of treasures can be found, from soul 45s to Communist newspapers from the 30s. It's all there! Make sure to check out the 78 collection. Lo & Behold also hosts many in store performances, sometimes taking place in the empty lot next door if the weather permits. This is the most wonderful place on the planet! Today Yelp sent out this email about the best record shops in Detroit and didn't list Lo & Behold, even on the extended results. Part of me is happy because maybe less people will cram in to experience the magical evenings at Folk Blues Night or maybe there will remain room for all the spins and slides of the all-night northern soul dance parties. Or, it will keep the vintage clothing less picked over so I don't have to make it in as often. The other part of me is sad because some of the music that is coming out of this shop is so incredible that you want the whole world to have it at their fingertips - Yelp style, even - to play over and over and over again. Remnose, Connor Dodson, Folk Blues Night... The record selection and Richie are both obscure and wonderful and you'll like them BUT the music that Lo & Behold is putting out really shouldn't be missed by anyone. read more
