We visited Source Booksellers during a book crawl for a friend's birthday. I have been meaning to come here for years. I'm so glad I finally made it. It won't be the last time. The store is well lit with a great number of books available for sale. We ordered books for our book club and they had them available for us when we came in. Shopping on a Sunday and was looking for a Christmas gift so I stopped in again. I was looking for something specific so I asked the owner who was beyond helpful. I didn't and up finding what I was looking for but bought a few things for myself They do carry more non-fiction books than anything else but have a wide variety of children's literature and a good selection of fiction. read more

[Out-of-Towner Review] Black and woman owned independent bookstore. Need I say more?! No, but I will. Miss Janet was incredibly welcoming upon entering the bookstore and she did this for EVERY person(s) that walked through her door. It was so refreshing to be kindly greeted like she did. While this bookstore mostly focuses on non-fiction, they have a little of everything, so do not count them out if you're looking for something else. I personally like to support local authors when I travel and I was so happy they had an area where they called out local authors specifically. I was able to easily peruse the section and find a book that I thought would be a great read. Their selection is vast and the layout is super reader friendly. They also have a children's section. They have everything. If you are an audio or e-reader, they have an option to support them through an app or website. Just ask Miss Janet, she'll share how it works. I was specifically looking for a brand new release, which was of the romance genre, and Miss Janet looked it up in her system and said she had one copy on hand. She looked high and low for me and she finally found it. I was so excited that she had it! I had the loveliest experience at Source Booksellers and I would highly recommend anyone visiting the Detroit area to visit and patronage their independent bookstore! I've been a fan of Source Booksellers since their former location across the street but it just occurred to me that I never penned a review for their newer space in the Auburn building. I say "newer" because they've been here for at least 7+ years, so this is a massive oversight on my part! Well, I'm happy to right this wrong today. Primarily a non-fiction bookstore, this amazing Black owned business has been a staple of the Cass Corridor/Midtown for as long as I can remember. The owner, Janet, is incredible. So friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about a myriad of subjects and can give some fantastic recommendations if you're looking for something new to read. These days, a lot of folks are (rightly so) looking for resources on how to be a better ally or how to be anti-racist and they have a superb collection in this regard. Plus they feature a lot of books by Black authors in a variety of subjects, so you can support a Black author no matter what subject you're looking to learn more about. They also have a really robust section called "books by and about women" so you can specifically support women writers too. Currently the shop is closed to in store browsing due to the pandemic but their online shop is open at sourcebooksellersonline.com and you can order there for curbside pick up or call the shop during their designated hours of operation to speak to someone to place an order over the phone or chat with a bookseller for recommendations. I highly recommend you do this, they are such a wealth of great information and suggestions. They've also been hosting some great virtual events, conversations with authors and activists. Came here to get some Sauce to pour on my tasty books. Should have gone to Sauce Booksellers. This is an excellent bookstore and even if it wasn't a great bookstore I'd give it a decent rating because you should always support your little independent booksellers - but this one is actually one of the better ones. It's in a newly gentrified neighborhood and it does have a gentrified feel, but having said that it's still a really good shop, regardless of where it's located and there are some real gems and rare books in here to be found which you will like. read more

This place is so cute! I was walking to look for stocking stuffers at some of the local stores, and I had been looking for Gabrielle Unions book but I wasn't able to find it (TArget, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, etc), and I walked in and it was sitting right there! The place itself is very nice with a lot of insightful books and other reading materials, particularly from Black woman authors. The owner however (elder grey haired lady) was extremely rude to both my mother as well as myself when we inquired with her regarding her selection. She was abrupt, and turned her nose up when we attempted to engage her around my mothers book. Cute space, but her energy needs a reset. Treating people with respect should be a bare minimum. read more

Superb bookstore (assorted non-fiction)! Nice space, brilliant owner. Met owner Janet today as I curiously nosed my way into the new Cass Ave location, where she treated me to a friendly tour of the brightly lit shop, talked about some new titles and hot-items (she really does have a wealth of knowledge on just about everything in the store). Politics, history, biography, religion/spirituality, Detroit authors/history. They do quite a lot of in-store events too which are worth popping in and learning about. I'll definitely be grabbing some summer reading here on my next paycheck. She claims it's a non-fiction specialty store - though i *did* spy some Octavia Butler in the very back... so if you're an escapist through and through, there's something here even for you. [if you're a fan of all the trendy milk-toast vampire/werewolf/fantasy movies of the last 8 years or so, you should really know Octavia Butler's books which were way ahead of their time, and a lot more interesting than the silver-screen ham that's being served today... A great bookstore! It's within the Cass Corridor, which has made an amazing comeback. There's a great variety of shops in the area, and Source is no exception. They have a wide variety of nonfiction books, and there's something for everyone! The woman at the desk is truly passionate about books and very friendly. If you need help, she will be glad to help. She may have been the owner, but I'm not really sure. I went in Leap Day weekend and they were having a promotion: take a book from a basket (note: the covers were covered up!) and read it and write a review on it on its website. WHOA! I've been giving a lot four and five stars lately, but I must just be picking the right spots. I was on Cass Ave for a meeting and just stopped in here on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised. As my fellow yelpers have said, Source Booksellers is a non-fiction store. They sell books about wellness, history, social issues and books about women by women. When you walk in it's like stepping into another world. The store is relaxing, it smells good and the staff is friendly. I was encouraged to hang out, read and sit while I was there. They have wifi and are welcoming of people who just need a place to sit and be still with a good book. The prices are also quite reasonable and they have a great selection of books about Detroit and its people. Go! Read and enjoy! PS, if you don't know what to pick up first, ask. This bookstore is incredible! Mostly non-fiction, but with some best sellers. Some of the coolest and most interesting books around. The staff are all incredible, especially Janet the owner. Organic chemistry for babies! Astronomy and astrology! There are some really great local events with authors. It's stocked with locally produced ayurvedic perfume, dark chocolate, and peanut brittle.
