A great place to get lost flipping through old and new albums. This is a real record store, unlike the chain stores who cater to the mediocre. I have found some great stuff here. Also, the people who work there are there because they love music, not just for a paycheck. Depending on your exact musical tastes, the prices at Found Sound vary from sweet deals to unpalatably bitter. Iconic albums invariably fall into the bitter category, dashing my dreams of ever owning their copy of Dark Side of the Moon. The rest of the selection seems to vary according to genre though, depending on when I visited, the same genres seemed to change pricing tier according to a mysterious someone's personal algorithm. Indie rock, newer punk, and jazz standards consistently rank among the more expensive. Luckily, my taste in vinyl has been veering more toward bossa nova and harmonica covers and I've been able to walk out with handfuls of three to four dollar records, all in workable condition. They've always been willing to haggle with me on the price of damaged records which is, in itself, an interesting but fading art akin to spinning vinyl. The selection rotates, contracts, and expands fairly regularly, depending heavily on the number of other record stores in the process of closing up shop. The few initially underrepresented genres -- hip-hop and post-punk, particularly -- have been steadily growing in the last year. If you, like myself, enjoy the pure joy that comes with discovering new music but are in a committed relationship with indecision, try out one of the dirt-cheap mystery packs available near the register in the back. Sorted by genre, opening one of these bargain packs is the closest you'll get as a maladapted adult to the childhood feeling of opening a pack of trading cards. On the negative end of the bargain, you might, at great expense to yourself and to the joy of your smart-mouthed friends, end up with multiple copies of The Police's Ghost in the Machine in your record collection. The listening room has a fairly comprehensive setup and, of all the records I've had to sample, only one or two have turned out to be less than desirable in quality. The owners and employees are friendly folk who take a hands-off approach to letting you select your records. Once you engage them in a little chit-chat, however, they ooze recommendations and cool cultural artifacts. I took my younger brother here recently - his first visit to Ferndale - and he was really excited to check out Found Sound. We were the only two people in the store, and neither of the three employees (immersed in conversation behind the desk) greeted or acknowledged us as we walked through the store, nor did they offer any assistance. At one point, my brother was trying to explain a new artist to me, and played 15 or 20 seconds of a song from his iPhone. The staff responded by turning up the volume of the music played throughout the store (I watched the girl reach toward the sound system and turn up the volume) and then turning it down again when my brother had silenced the song on his phone. It appeared as if they increased the volume in the store so they wouldn't have to suffer listening to any "outside" music. My brother had 4 or 5 records in his hands and put them all down. Apparently we were too bothersome that day - wanting to spend money in their store and all (how dare we, right?). Sorry that we annoyed you with our business. I've gone here more than once, and each time I've found something really great at a great price (bought a record for 5 bucks that I found in Dearborn for 20). Also, the selection has gotten better each time I go. Some people have said they'll give 3 stars for now till FS improves. Well, I'm giving them 5 because they are obviously on the path for having one of the best record selections in the Metro area. Love this place. read more

I read the harsh yelp reviews before heading to Found Sound for the first time. Not sure what to expect, I ended up pleasantly suprised. What is everyone griping about? I found the selection to be very suitable for my tastes. The prices may seem high in some circumstances, but brand new 180g records have always been pricey. Found many used choices under $5 also. Condition wasn't an issue because I inspected all used records with my peepers and thankfully they didn't force me to buy anything in poor condition. Phew! Service? Excellent. They left me alone while I looked at their records...what more could you ask for? No incense but another customer smelled of patchouli. I was shocked. Nice to see an independent record store back in Ferndale. Good show! read more

Very good selection of new and used, plenty of classic hard to find jazz and R&B. One small beef, they need to do a more thorough job of rating the record quality/condition. Example being Reckless Records in Chicago where they rate them from near mint down to fair and price accordingly. Sometimes the vision test is not enough to accurately gauge aural quality. read more

2017 UPDATE: This place seems to have gone downhill a bit in the last few years. In terms of used new arrivals, Found Sound has dried up for me. They don't seem to be getting much in anymore that I'm looking for. Lots of common fodder in less than great shape though. When something out of the ordinary does show up, it's priced too high for the condition it's in. Prices are also higher than some other stores in the area for anything I'd want to buy. I had to laugh to myself recently when I saw an LP I was interested in and it still had a recent-ish tag on the back from another store at half the price. Things like that make me not want to shop here anymore. If you just want recent reissues and new records, Found Sound is well stocked, but you're not going to find much here that you can't get somewhere else for the same price or a few bucks less. UPDATE: After shopping here over a period of time, I'm going to raise my 3 star rating to 4 stars. I have found a fair amount of gems here that have kept me going back. Unlike some stores, the "good stuff" seems to actually go out on the floor and not straight to online sales. One thing I would say is that there seems to be some inconsistency in the pricing and condition of used records I've seen in the bins over the last year or so. I'm guessing this is down to employee training since I've seen more than one person in here pricing records. It's pretty obvious that they are using Discogs/eBay to gauge prices like every other store out there today, but I don't think an LP should be priced at the middle to upper end up of the pricing range if it has a few nasty looking scratches or a cut corner on the jacket. I've seen LPs in here that are priced at $10-15+ that should be dollar bin material based on the condition. Another point I'd like to bring up is the new jazz vinyl. Please stop stocking those terrible bootleg European Public Domain "reissues" of classic jazz albums. None of the artists' estates get paid, and the audio is just ripped off CDs. Labels like Original Jazz Classics still have a ton of great titles from the 50s and 60s in print today at good prices, so there is no reason to be filling the racks with bootleg level stuff. I'm sure that the owner didn't order this stuff with full knowledge of what it was but it doesn't give the store a great reputation with jazz fans. A good record store, but not a great one. That said, I've spent a fair amount of money at this place and have had a consistently good experience, so I will continue to stop in from time to time to see if they have anything I want. ORIGINAL REVIEW: If you're expecting something with a selection on par with Dusty Groove or Reckless in Chicago, forget it. On the other hand, if you're looking for stuff that not every other twentysomething hipster or fortysomething Dad is looking for, you can find deals if you're willing to dig. I've picked up semi-obscure post-punk and college rock LPs here in excellent shape for very reasonable prices. I've also managed to find good deals on used CDs occasionally, though their CD selection can be very hit or miss. The good stuff tends to get picked over very quickly. On the new vinyl front, Found Sound's prices are fair and on-par with most online dealers. For example, $27 for a MOFI Silver Series LP reissue is very reasonable when MOFI themselves charge $25 + shipping for the same title. If I have any complaints, it's that their selection of used and new R&B/Soul and Reggae could be a lot better. Most of the used LP titles in these categories were in rough shape and I'd expect to see more classic titles or at least some good reissues of classic titles in the racks. read more

By far the best selection in multiple genres I've seen. I spent a couple of hours last week and came away with albums in old country, folk, classical, jazz and rock. Great vibe, extremely friendly staff. My only pricing complaint is that a bunch of the albums in the "2 for a dollar" shelf are records I already have and love. In town visiting family and had a couple dozen used vinyl LPs to sell or trade; 70s, 80s, no extraordinary finds, but all in good condition. Went to Melodies And Memories first (see my review there), then Record Collector in Ferndale (store closing thus not buying) before finding FOUND SOUND across the street. It was the only place where the staff greeted me with a friendly hello. They were perfectly willing to examine my albums and I was satisfied with what Ray offered me for trade. As far as shopping, it's nice to go into a record store and not have the albums jammed in the slots making browsing difficult. In-store music was different than the profanity-laden rap at Record Collector or progressive jazz at M & M--Thin Lizzy followed by Herb Alpert & the TJB. 45s, most priced at $5, had some real finds but there was a selection of sleeveless singles for cheap too. Bargain hunters like me will love the $2 discount wall! I think they said they opened July 2012 which may be why their selection isn't THAT big, but hopefully that will improve with time. First off, paint over the purple walls! This place is a bit like a record store in a cave. Even during the summer hours it seems dark inside. That being said, great large selection of used vinyl. Lots of soul/R&B, jazz, pop and so on. Their new selection of vinly is rapid growing but still just a fraction compared to the used vinyl. Amazing variety even though there's not enough albums of any particular artist when you buy a CD. For what it's worth you are buying used so you won't always find an album you want there since it is a local shop and not a franchise, but they can always look around for you and special order it and that's just a service that F.Y.E. does not offer. Excellent customer service, and a wide variety of records sold including newer artists that you normally would just go to iTunes for. If you are like me and want a hard copy of your tunes over loosing a download because of HDD failure, or it not being offered online anymore, or you can not download on your old PC anymore then this is the place for you. read more

I've been back a lot. Even though they sell Crosleys. I usually get some jazz or classic rock. They have good selection, good prices, good turnover. Just good not great. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd be there at least once a week. But I'm about a half hour away so I go there about once every two months. They are on my good list. read more

I'm new to the whole vinyl seeking scene thanks to my super cool 15 year old daughter. I was listening to Color Me Badd when I was 15 but this girl went to Found Sound to find Green Day, Dookie which they had and was a little pricey but new, Pearl Jam, Ten also pricey and new and Fall Out Boy, pricey but new. THEN we found the "Two for a Dollar" section and she found several awesome classics Bowie, Rolling Stones. Her favorite from the day was the Grease soundtrack which one of the very nice men working found for her downstairs. Then the guy that rang up our purchases made her feel really cool about her choices. He said that Green Day was his first concert which he attended when he was ten which led my daughter to do the math in her head but I was one step ahead of her because that album was released when I was in college= young guy but WAY TOO OLD FOR HER. All in all a great 15th birthday experience for my daughter. I had an enourmous amount of fun and didn't spend that much money. read more

The new kid in town when it comes to record stores. Great location, I like walking around downtown Ferndale. The prices are fair, about the same as the other shops in Royal Oak, Clawson, and Eastpointe, when it comes to new and used records. But the quality is a bit under par for the average price. They have got some new lighting so now maybe the grading/pricing will be more on par. The staff is friendly enough and they have a good balance of genres for the used. I think they would do much better though if they "Found" their own style. From the black stage riser in the back for the live bands to the old TV in the front window and many places in between they appear to want to be UHF 2. What they really should do is find their own niche'. UHF has a slim pickings 45 section which I collect. Why not give us record buyers something different then a carbon copy store 2 miles from the other. Oh, and the shows starting after regular hours is cool. That's something no one else does! And being under 21 I can't get into a lot of shows that time of the night. There is potential here once they find their own identity. read more
