Hu tieu do bien

Intense pork soup with shrimp, scallops, and squid. It was just as good as most of the Vietnamese restaurants, but the price was slightly higher.

If you sit by the window you basically eat in front of a mirror!

I ate here and had the absolute worst food poisoning of my life. Obviously for everyone's sake I won't go into details, but even writing about this place makes me queasy. My sister and I ordered the vermicelli bowls, hers was tofu, mine was chicken and shrimp. I got sick, she didn't. It would have had to have been one of the meats. I get that this happens, but I think anyone that has had food poisoning knows that when you get hit by it, you get angry at the oversight by the people who work there. Even if I was the only person to ever get sick by their food, I'm pissed that I did and it is totally their fault. I won't ever eat there again, and it will likely be a long time before I can stomach Vietnamese food again. Shame.

They only fill the soup halfway.... If you like to add lots of bean sprouts, stay away from this place.

Ordered the Pho Dac Biet. Decent sized bowl but the soup was only filled up around the halfway point. After putting in bean sprouts and mixing, I couldnt' even see the soup anymore. To make it worse, since there was so little soup, after adding the bean sprouts everything was lukewarm which kinda kills the noodle soup experience. Taste wise I found it pretty good but at $14 + tax & tip for half a bowl of soup, I wouldn't go back

Perfectly seasoned and grilled La Lop meat balls on vermicelli - my favorite dish!
Khadija J.

I am a major pho lover and the broth here is the most authentic in town!! The flavors are amazing, the vermicelli bowls are filling and delicious, and the specialty La Lop beef balls are my personal favorite. The service is always fast and excellent, the Vietnamese coffee tastes like it did in Hanoi, and the atmosphere is casual cool. All around my go to Vietnamese place - I'm here at least once a week! It's open late, the food is great and you can bring a date!

Chicken Vermicelli with Spring Rolls

This place is OK. There are definitely things I like about this place. I like the taste of their curry, it's got a really nice flavour to it. I also really like the chicken kebab things. The spring rolls are also really good, but I find that spring rolls are pretty much good everywhere. I like that this place is open really late too. However, this isn't really my first choice for Vietnamese food. I've found some weird stuff in my food though, like hair. I've also had some extremely questionable pieces of meat in some of my food. Like uncooked chicken. There was another time where the vermicelli noodles were sticky. Like really sticky it felt like they were unwashed and covered in some sort of weird filmy substance? It didn't taste or feel right when I put it in my mouth. So yeah, I mean this place is good when you're in Garneau and in a pinch for pho. But it's not my first choice. I will say that the staff is amazing and helpful and the food comes out quick. So it's decent. A definite "A-OK".

Phobulous coffee.

In terms of Vietnamese restaurants, this is one of the nicer, trendier ones. Most of the authentic ones are pretty plain inside and service can lack class or even attentiveness. (I once had a waiter spill some of the sauce off a plate he served to us right on the table in front of us and he never even acknowledged it). At Phobulous, the food is tasty and the experience is enjoyable. The space, itself, is modern, with pale green walls, creative art photography by a local artist hung up, bamboo accents and wooden tables. It isn't a huge place. I'd say it would seat no more than 20-25 people. The menu has all of the Vietnamese classics - salad rolls, spring rolls, pho soup - and there are also some more creative, unique items, like a tangy lotus root salad, containing white ear fungus, a tree fungus once reserved for royalty, fried banana dessert and weasel coffee, made from coffee beans eaten and regurgitated by wild weasels, whose stomach juices reduce the acidity of the coffee. This is located about 10 minutes walk from the U of A campus and attract both work and student clientele. Lunch is busy. Try to get there early if you can. It fills up fast.

a bowl of noodles and a bottle of beer

I paid $50 for two takeout dishes. My husband had to add flavour as his was bland. My pho was a GIANT bowl of noodles with broth and some shrimp. Almost non-existent greenery. And all the noodles broke into little bits so it was very difficult and unpleasant to eat. We definitely won't be back since I remember my experience years ago there was not good either.

Not the best, not the worst, but good enough for me to probably come back when my pho craving strikes when I'm around the area. The space is nice and they seem to be quite busy and popular with students all the time. It's definitely a good spot to hang out! In addition to pho they also have other Vietnamese dishes and they're licensed so if you want a drink I suppose it's good for that too? I personally think they're a better places for cocktails but their prices are alright and if you're looking for some comfort food this isn't a bad place! Ps. They have some vegetarian options as well! Their veggie pho has fried tofu and spinach and its definitely better than other veggie/plain phos :)

Salad rolls and peanut sauce.

My husband and I have been going to Phobulous weekly for over three years now. It's nice to be a "regular" and for us to be known by name and order. We definitely like the service. We usually come during busy periods and most of the time it's fast and friendly... no matter who is serving our table. I always order the beef & prawn vermicelli bowl. It's reliably good and consistent... there have only been a few occasions where the meat was a bit tough, or it didn't taste as good as usual. I especially love the spring rolls... they are just delicious dipped in the fish sauce. My husband changes his order around sometimes, but generally orders either the lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl, the beef & prawn vermicelli bowl, the pan friend chicken and tofu (with rice), or the tofu vermicelli bowl. We also always start with salad rolls... either the veggie ones or the beef ones, both are delicious and fresh and come with a yummy peanut dipping sauce. Funnily enough, neither of us have ever tried the pho so I can't comment on that. I can say that Phobulous is a great place to go if you're looking for a filling vermicelli bowl!

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. And it's pretty darn delicious. If I don't get that. The bun bo hue is loaded with so many meats that I never can finish it! I can't wait to go back to this locally owned business run by a family. Although service is not the greatest. They do provide whatever you need if you ask for it. They definitely won't bother you when you visit here. As most people just eat quick and leave. Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

Service is fast, but minimal. Nobody came to check on us at all during the duration of our meal. I had the beef satay soup, which, unfortunately, is only available in the regular size. I normally don't find the regular size filling enough to last me until the next meal. The soup was good though; not overly spicy with a nice peanut flavor to it. Not a fan of how lean the beef was though; I prefer some fattiness to my meat. My brother and mom both ordered a large bowl of pho and they felt the broth was watered down and bland. My mom felt the large size just meant more broth and did not feel full at the end of her meal. My mom also did not like how lean/tough the beef in her pho was either. For 2 large bowls of pho, a regular size bowl of satay, a small bowl of noodle only and a side order of spring rolls came out to just over $56. The Groupon is a good deal, but I don't know if I'd make this place one of my go-tos for Vietnamese food as there is definitely better out there. Staff won't allow happy hour specials at discounted price despite being in happy hour time frame. Hoang long is a modern clean space with bamboo accents and a newly renovated area. There is a large patio out front for summer. But it being closed off made the entrance kinda blending in. I was looking for the entrance and walked right by it. Trying to figure out how you get in is a slight challenge. As the door blends in so well and it appears it's just the patio. But that's the entrance. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
