Words cannot express how much I enjoy a good old bowl of delicious pho This was my favourite place for a quick filling dinner back in my university days, and is still one of my favourite pho places to this day I love pho soup so much I forget to try other items from their large menu selection lol. One of my favourites is Pho Shizzle - tender tasty tidbits of steak and balls of beefy goodness drowning in a great honking bowl of beef broth, with a large stack of noddles and topped with a handful of bean sprouts, smothered in hoisin sauce with a touch of hot sauce (These probably heavily influenced my current obsession with cilantro lol) Large filling portions of food at such great prices, it's hard to pass up. Mother Pho had all the various beef choices, with all of them in the pho soup - great choice, yet I made change the noodles to udon next time. If you have any dietary concerns I recommend you eat elsewhere. In the past I've tried asking for no spring roll, or my spring roll on the side so I can hand it off to a companion. I could always tell that they had plunked it on top and then taken it off pretending it had never been there. They just don't seem to respect food allergies or sensitivities. If anyone thinks that attitude has changed, please let me know. I've stopped ordering their pho. Sat at usual table with the dirt and grease encrusted plastic orchid flower arrangement. Although I had already yelped about it, I decided to draw it to the attention of our server, Joanne, who argued with me that I was wrong- it's not dirty she claimed. I ate here and had the absolute worst food poisoning of my life. Obviously for everyone's sake I won't go into details, but even writing about this place makes me queasy. My sister and I ordered the vermicelli bowls, hers was tofu, mine was chicken and shrimp. I got sick, she didn't. It would have had to have been one of the meats. I get that this happens, but I think anyone that has had food poisoning knows that when you get hit by it, you get angry at the oversight by the people who work there. Even if I was the only person to ever get sick by their food, I'm pissed that I did and it is totally their fault. Although it is a bit more pricey than many other pho places, the food is pretty good and the menu has a nice variety of interesting other dishes to try for the less adventurous or those less in the mood for soup. Service has always been variable here. My latest visit was with a group and we were seated in the overflow room which is an interesting place to be to say the least. This restaurant can get rather busy even early in the evening so I hope that the restaurant expands PROPERLY into the overflow room rather than leaving it as is. One of my friends found a piece of ceramic in her food but the staff bent over backwards to make this right. They also didn't charge us for tea so that was refreshing (even though they were supposed to charge us for the tea). This place is OK. There are definitely things I like about this place. I like the taste of their curry, it's got a really nice flavour to it. I also really like the chicken kebab things. The spring rolls are also really good, but I find that spring rolls are pretty much good everywhere. I like that this place is open really late too. However, this isn't really my first choice for Vietnamese food. I've found some weird stuff in my food though, like hair. I've also had some extremely questionable pieces of meat in some of my food. In terms of Vietnamese restaurants, this is one of the nicer, trendier ones. Most of the authentic ones are pretty plain inside and service can lack class or even attentiveness. (I once had a waiter spill some of the sauce off a plate he served to us right on the table in front of us and he never even acknowledged it). At Phobulous, the food is tasty and the experience is enjoyable. The space, itself, is modern, with pale green walls, creative art photography by a local artist hung up, bamboo accents and wooden tables. It isn't a huge place. I'd say it would seat no more than 20-25 people. The menu has all of the Vietnamese classics - salad rolls, spring rolls, pho soup - and there are also some more creative, unique items, like a tangy lotus root salad, containing white ear fungus, a tree fungus once reserved for royalty, fried banana dessert and weasel coffee, made from coffee beans eaten and regurgitated by wild weasels, whose stomach juices reduce the acidity of the coffee. This is located about 10 minutes walk from the U of A campus and attract both work and student clientele. Lunch is busy. Try to get there early if you can. It fills up fast. read more

I ordered the lemomgrass chicken and spring roll bowl and subbed the vermicelli with rice. The serving was actually quite big, so if you are not that hungry, you can probably split the plate between 2 people. The chicken was tender and well marinated, while the spring rolls were pretty good as well. We also tried their fried chicken, good serving for a half size and can probably serve 2-4 people. I paid $50 for two takeout dishes. My husband had to add flavour as his was bland. My pho was a GIANT bowl of noodles with broth and some shrimp. Almost non-existent greenery. My husband and I have been going to Phobulous weekly for over three years now. It's nice to be a "regular" and for us to be known by name and order. We definitely like the service. We usually come during busy periods and most of the time it's fast and friendly... no matter who is serving our table. I always order the beef & prawn vermicelli bowl. It's reliably good and consistent... there have only been a few occasions where the meat was a bit tough, or it didn't taste as good as usual. I especially love the spring rolls... they are just delicious dipped in the fish sauce. My husband changes his order around sometimes, but generally orders either the lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl, the beef & prawn vermicelli bowl, the pan friend chicken and tofu (with rice), or the tofu vermicelli bowl. We also always start with salad rolls... either the veggie ones or the beef ones, both are delicious and fresh and come with a yummy peanut dipping sauce. Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall is a tiny restaurant named Phobulous. If you love Vietnamese cuisine , this is the place to go. A wide variety of pho ( pronounced as foe ) soups , appetizers and other dishes. The coconut shrimp is to die for as an appetizer or their salad rolls. The soups are delicious , whether you like vegetarian or a choice of meats. Average prices around $13 for the soups ( it sounds like a lot but once you see the size of the bowls youll see why. ) The Tapis is good.. huge onion cake with spring rolls and coconut shrimp . I came here with my boyfriend and his parents on a Sunday afternoon. This place was pretty busy! We started off with the goi cuon appetizer to share, which was decent. I could tell it was freshly wrapped to order, the peanut sauce was a little watery for me, but tasted fine. When I ordered my pho tai, I asked for nuoc beo. The first waitress said "what?" And when the food came out, I asked the second waiter and he said "what??" And I explained it to him and he said "okay", yet I never got it. They both definitely weren't Vietnamese, lol. Their noodle to soup ratio is a little off, lol. It seemed like a double serving of noodles to half a serving of soup! I tasted the broth, it's a little on the sweet side -- but so far its the best pho broth I've had in Edmonton (this is only the second pho restaurant I've been to here.) First and last visit. Had the sate soup with chicken. Bowl was medium size and smaller then the regular size pho soup bowls I observed at other tables. The sate soup was of your sub-standard variety and nothing special at all. The real problem was how pricey it was and for a medium size bowl at that. With tax and $2.00 tip it came to $17.49. Phobulous is my favorite place for vietnamese food! In addition to the food being tasty, fresh and quick - the restaurant is very modern and clean looking, but not intimidating. You can't always find those two things together in a great restaurant! The restaurant itself is very small - you might be hard pressed to find a table for more than 4 during dinner time. The servers are friendly and very accomodating - they get busy sometimes but you never really feel ignored or forgotten. The woman in the kitchen (who I think may be an owner) is hilarious and you get a really good sense that she cares about what she puts out and wants to make sure everything is 100% right. I find the portions to be quite large (honestly, how much soup can one person eat? The bowls are more like basins to me) and I love the aromas that come wafting up immediately - so good and so comforting! Not to mention, relatively healthy ;) Well, most of it. After living in the neighborhood for 4 years and visiting this place on so many late night occasions, I think it is time for me to update my review and add one star to this small joint. The pho is very good and the service is always fast and consistent. I never had a bad experience here and always feel satisfied leaving the restaurant. After reading so many good reviews of this place I decided to try it with a friend. I have to be honest I was disappointed. After waiting a long time for menus and then for the server to take our order our food finally arrived. The salad rolls were delicious, although the peanut sauce was runnier and not peanuty as I have had at other places and having the sauce run down the roll just wasn't my thing. I had the pho real, and I do enjoy me some pho but spooning out a hunk of beef fat (not soft hard with cartilage) kinda grossed me out and the soup just wasn't doing it for me. Here's the things I like about Phobulous: I like that they're open late! You see a movie at Garneau and maybe you need a lil post movie snack... It's a great option! I like their salad rolls! They have a couple options for salad rolls, which is great because we all know sometimes you gotta change up your salad roll game. I like their vermicelli bowls. I thought the broth on my pho was great as well! I added some hoi sin for a lil extra sweet sweet and I was not upset at the result. I also like the clever names on the menu and the general vibe and friendliness of the staff. My ooooonly complaint was the chicken in my chicken, shrimp, and squid bowl. It was a kiiiiinda janky. It was hella dry and just not on the delicious side of things. Also I only got one squid bit. So I guess that's two complaints. But all in all who am I kiddin? I come to Phobulous quite often since it is closed to my school and home. Their Pho soup is clear and great. Their service is also good. Clean interior and clean washroom deserve an additional star. The portion is a bit small and pricy though as they are around $13-15. I came from Toronto so maybe I am used to the price of pho in Toronto which usually around $8-9. Friday night rolls around, and I find myself craving something different, yet familiar. My honey suddenly suggests a new Vietnamese restaurant close by. I had passed by Phobulous many times and always meant to try it, but somehow never got around to it. Well, now it was finally my chance! Different, because I never tried it, and familiar, because it was Vietnamese. As we entered the small restaurant, I admit I did so with my guard up. Judging from its name, the restaurant always seemed more fusion rather than authentic to me. The establishment's name is a fusion of the English word "fabulous", obviously, and the word "pho" (pronounced "fuh"), which is a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. Thus as a reflection of the name, I was expecting the menu to be less authentic as well. The restaurant is quite small and cramped, and attempts to pack in as much seating as possible. However, what it lacks in space, it makes up for in great service and a soft, comfortable ambiance. Our waitress was quick to clear a table for us and take our orders. The interior of the restaurant was both cozy and modern. The waiting time was surprisingly short, as the restaurant was packed to its full capacity. And finally, I come to the meat of my review, the part in which I relinquish the full essence of my experience at Phobulous. Thank you for waiting for me to come to this point (unless you skipped straight to this part -- but what can I say, I do it too). I am telling you, the first sip of my dish (aptly named the Phonomenon) was like that scene in Ratatouille!! You know, the one where the critic had one bite of Remy's ratatouille, and then his memory was like whoosh! and suddenly he was a little boy eating his mom's home-cooking? It was exactly like that, my friends. I wanted to cry because its the closest thing to my grandmother's home-cooking. It wasn't too salty, the ingredients were fresh, and the noodles were just soft enough (not mushy). Even my honey said the spring rolls in his dish tasted like the ones my grandmother makes. Another bonus? You can tell they don't add too much MSG in the soup, because it doesn't leave you begging for water in the end. All this for the regular price of pho at any other Vietnamese restaurant -- pretty cheap. And to top off the great meal, they give you these tiny mango candies in the end. These candies may look small, but they are bursting with flavor! I swear, it's like stuffing a whole mango in your mouth. If you don't go for the food, at least go for the candies! So I learned that you can't judge the quality of a restaurant entirely on its appearance or its name. Like most things in life, you just have to give it a chance. And if you're craving Vietnamese next time, try this place and I guarantee that more likely than not, you will have a Phobulous time too -- pun totally intended! read more

Well, for someone who eats a lot of Vietnamese food, this is not the place to go. I found Phobulous to be somewhat commercial (as the name suggests) and not very authentic. I was disappointed in a few things with this restaurant. First, the portions were small. If you go to Ninh Kieu, you get twice as much food for less than what you pay at Phobulous. Which brings me to my second issue - the price. Vietnamese food should not be expensive. There are innumerable places downtown where you can get REAL and AUTHENTIC Vietnamese food and it doesn't cost you a lot. I also wasn't impressed with the taste of the food in general. It wasn't very good. And I love Vietnamese food. If you're looking to kind of test the waters with a different kind of food, you might want to try this place. But if you are looking for delicious, authentic Vietnamese food, skip Phobulous completely. read more

I'll be straight like you like the summer roll that I ordered, that turned out to be spring roll. Except it was more like a Lumpia because it was super small. My girlfriend and i came to this place and it was definitely unique. It actually caught our attention because of the smell. Yea that's right. You know which one. PHO SMELL. I give this place 10/10 for creativity on the menu. Names mean everything and this place was PHO KING bomb....until you try the pho. The pho was so disappointing. I was hoping for something more delicious since i've eaten my fair share of pho. The vermicelli bowl was def. better though so maybe get that if you want something that's worth it. Phobulous is my favourite Vietnamese food in Edmonton. Although I'm not the biggest fan of pho itself, I regularly visit Vietnamese places for vermicelli bowls and Phobulous never disappoints. It is very close to the U of A, so its easy to pop over there for lunch with a couple of friends and grab an iced coffee and vermicelli bowl. The inside is quite small so make sure you get there in time to grab a seat before the rush (I have seen it fill up quite a bit).
