I'm not the biggest fan of Vietnamese cuisine, but I was willing to give this place a try since my husband hadd good memories the last time he visited (a few years ago). Nonetheless, I was disappointed. As soon as you walk in, the climate is very muggy. Almost like something wet is sitting in a corner and has not been tended to. The service is minimal; we had not been ready to order as soon as we were seated, but the waitress did not come back within the 8-10 minutes we were looking at our menu. Possibly a cultural difference here. My husband ordered a vegetarian dish that had tofu that was way undercooked. When my pho came, it was HUGE. THE EMPLOYEES HERE DO NOT WEAR MASKS! One male employee wore a mask (but it was literally a gas mask and not a mask for COVID). All the other employees were walking around the restaurant completely maskless. They also did not properly clean tables between customers. Oh, and the food was mediocre. I wasn't sure what I was going to order when I stopped at Pho Saigon for lunch today. It was probably going to be pho, because at least half of my meals lately are. And then, I saw a diagram sitting on my table.banh mi from Pho Saigon, Memphis, Tenn. Even though the sandwich was halved, there was so much stuff on it that my first attempt at biting it resulted in a mouth full of deliciously buttery crusty French bread (and nothing else). Subsequent bites were more complete, but as I ate, I was conflicted. I liked it. At least, I'm pretty sure I liked it. It was super fresh, and it had a nice sharp, almost citrusy, taste (a combination of black pepper, soy sauce and cilantro). The meats were all very different, and each added its own unique flavor to every bite. However - and I say this as someone who loves pork - four different varieties is a lot for one sandwich. It was like all of Cochon between two pieces of bread. There is this, though: Pho Saigon's bahn mi is probably the best, most-filling sandwich you can find in Memphis for four bucks. I took half of mine home, too, so that's like two large snacks. Where some restaurants just have little laminated postcards mentioning the specials, Pho Saigon has a complete, eight and a half by eleven diagram of their banh mi sandwich. It had four different kinds of pork on it and was less than five dollars, so I ordered it. Phó Saigon was, 'erm, okay, I guess? Definitely not my favorite, and as many good ethnic places as there are in Memphis, don't think I'll be revisiting. Parking is a cluster, worsened by the fact that PS shares the same building as an Enterprise. I stopped by for a late lunch. Service was to-the-point (almost brusque). Place seemed reasonably clean. I ordered shrimp rolls and phó taí. The shrimp rolls were big and among the cheapest price I've seen - but they were overstuffed with papery, dry shredded iceberg. They were dry and tasteless, so I tried to remove some of the lettuce (TOO much lettuce!). The peanut dipping sauce the rolls were served with was sickeningly sweet - it tasted like a sundae topping. Not a fan. The phó came out quickly and it was a massive bowl, with plenty of noodles and toppings. The broth and noodles were fine, but my main problem with the phó was the sliced beef: there was a LOT of meat (this is usually a good thing), but this was some of the most unpalatable beef I have ever seen in phó. It was chewy, tough, and tasted and smelled weird. I began to just pick it out and set it to the side because I disliked it so much. Totally bill excluding tip was about $12.50. read more

We ordered takeout on a cold snowy night. Our choice was chicken soup with extra noodles, and dumplings. The food was ready to go when I got there and very tasty. The owner and her servers can come across as very direct. I suppose this could seem brusque or even rude to Westerners. However, they are actually quite friendly, based on several visits in the past. I've been eating Pho Saigon my whole life because I grew up less than 5 minutes from there. The staff typically is very nice and attentive when I've dined in, and the food typically is ready swiftly when I've called it in. Pho Saigon is pretty convenient for me, but it's nowhere near the top of my list for Vietnamese, especially pho, in Memphis. It's not a bad restaurant per se, but it's never my choice if I have time to go further into Midtown for Vietnamese. Likewise, if I'm in Midtown, I've never felt the desire to have Pho Saigon over other options on Madison or along Cleveland, hence the 3 stars. It's got a fairly expansive menu, and very few dining experiences I've had have been "bad" (I've probably had Pho Saigon 30 or more times in my life), but I've had pretty much everything I've ordered in a better form elsewhere in town. Still, if you're craving Vietnamese and you don't want to head to Midtown or out to the suburbs, Pho Saigon is your only option, and it's solid enough to hit the spot. read more

Another one bites the dust! Although it had never been the kinda place filled with actual Vietnamese patrons this restaurant has been a staple in Memphis for over 35 years. As one of the first Vietnamese establishments in the city -Phò Saigon was probably the first introduction to this saucy Asian food style of cooking for so many Memphians. Memphis was one of the seven cities that were slated to be re-location centers after the war so no wonder why we have a tremendous Vietnamese food influence in this area. But alas, after so long this edgy establishment has sold last year and the new owners are feeling the growing pains of reproducing the food many have grown to love over the last decades. On the plus side the service is swift and friendly, the portions are plentiful and the to-go is ready in a hurry. Other side of the coin is I found that the recipes are more like Americanized Asian fair than the previous owners dishes. So you decide: try this place and see if this is the real deal or just another mall food court asian experience?? Let me know as I have been wondering if I had just a few miss-experiences!! I had never had pho but always wanted to try it. Luckily, my friend Felicia was craving this place so we went. Wow! It was so yummy!! I had the fried pork egg rolls, which were OUTSTANDING, while Felicia opted for the shrimp spring rolls. They were quite amazing as well and enormous. Then I had the Pho Tai, and requested for the meat to be well done since I'm pregnant which the owner gladly accommodated. Felicia got the Pho Tai Nam. Both of us were more than satisfied and happy with our meal. Super tasty! Tip: if you're interested in lunch, get there before noon. By 12:15, there wasn't an empty table. This was my first time at a Pho restaurant so I was anxious to see what all the hype was about. Staff was friendly and helpful and quick. We were with a large group so ordered several different items. To begin we ordered some spring rolls and egg rolls. Neither of which were very impressive. I ordered a curry dish and my husband ordered some type of beef pho. The curry flavor in my dish was strong and creamy. However, the chicken in it was inedible. It was so tough and chewy. This place has the worst service for Vietnamese restaurants. The food is mediocre more times the crappy side but they do offer vegetarian fried egg rolls which is a rarity. I used to come here to eat but stopped after being treated like trash and eating dirty, bland food. But once in awhile I'll order egg rolls Togo and then I'm reminded how rude the ladies are here. The pho here is pretty good! It was also a very raining day - perfect weather for some good pho :) We were seating really quick and given waters off the start. My girlfriend and I also knew what we wanted right away so the waiter was happy to take our orders. The pho came out supperrr fast! It was out within 5 minutes. It also tasted super good and the broth was soooo good and warm and delicious and heartwarming haha. *Sigh* I had forgotten what it was like to dine at restaurants that don't serve alcohol. Now that I have remembered, I don't want to do it again. (Although perhaps my major issue was that it was Halloween night and I was dressed as a walk of shame and desperately needed the liquid courage.) No alcohol aside, this place was pretty good. As I've mentioned numerous times before, I am a sucker for mom-and-pop/family-owned businesses. I find it cute and charming the way they all work together. You can tell they really want each of their customers to have a good experience - very attentive. And the food definitely got my attention. The lemongrass chicken (warning: its spicy) was fantastic with an extremely reasonable price tag. I noticed a lot of people came in for to-go orders. This is definitely my goto place for Pho and Banh Mi. Pho is basically broth, rice noodles, and herbs and spices. It's basically the cure for the common cold. Banh Mi is one the best sandwiches in the world! Cue the echo! For years and years I've been trying to decide on who has the best pho in town. It was between Pho Saigon, Pho Vietnam, and Green Bamboo. I find myself switching preferences often, but in the end, I always come back to Pho Saigon. Usually when I go, I order their pork vermicelli with the egg roll on top and a jack fruit shake. The vermicelli is a very nice portion size and the jack fruit shake is a great pairing with it. Think of it like having a burger and a milk shake, basically the same concept minus the burger and it being Asian food. Ambiance is simple. Not too much to it. They have a bunch of different pseudo paintings on the wall along with your typical decor you find in these fine establishments. They bring you your check and you pay at the conclusion of your meal at the cash register by the door. I love it and miss it dearly. Their pho are great. I've been coming here from time to time past 8 years and the taste of their pho hasn't been changed much. But I do feel like the amount of meat in the pho has been decreased. My favorite thing other than their pho is their chicken wings. Please do try. They are crispy and sweet. I love them...! I would eat their chicken wings every day if I wasn't concerned about my cholesterol. Service? Don't expect too much from these folks. The lady will get your refills only if she wants too. I'm trying to go light because it's Memphis and I seriously have not seen a single Asian person while I've been here save for walking into Pho Saigon. Once, I heard someone who had a Korean-Minnesotan accent, and now to my list I can add that I've heard someone who has a Vietnamese-Tennessean accent. Please do not ask me to duplicate this-- you'll just have to believe me when I say it's a trip. Pho was okay. Kinda bland, the noodles were soggy, and they don't serve limes, EVER; it's on their menu that they serve their pho with a lemon wedge. Ugh. Ok I have seen and heard many people who didn't like this place. If your noodle bowl is bland it is because you didn't get the special sauce, add the jalapeños, Thai basil or mint and sirachi. Go for #16 for chicken or the special bowls with udon noodles. I can share this with my husband because it is a large portion. This is our go to soup when we feel sick. It was on the immediate radar for dinner. After my meeting, I almost missed it but managed to squeeze my big ol' truck into a spot. It's no Le family food. The service has improved somewhat at Pho Saigon over the years, and the food has remained consistently "pretty good". The location is convenient to East Memphians and to midtowners. Decor is minimal, the restroom is always clean and stocked with magazines and piles of paper goods.
