AMBIANCE: This place is so quaint! It reminds me of a small restaurant that I would frequent in Meridian, MS. When I went there it was called "Thai Krai" (check my review). I haven't gone there since the management has changed... may have to see about it. Back to the main event, I really enjoyed myself. It is really a local spot that wouldn't immediately be seen by a tourist, but you'll be so glad you found it once you do. The parking is a bit limited and it is on a busy street, but it is worth a visit. As soon as you walk in, the place surprises you with just how much of restaurant detail is inside, because you initially think it would have limited seating or even consider it being like a convenient store by the external appearance. FOOD: Once you pick your seat, you realize they have everything you need at your table and all you have to do next is pick your dish(es). I decided to try one of the beef phos and it was really delicious. I got the regular size and that size was a large bowl. I could only imagein what their larger size is. It is probably for a person that is trying to share. SERVICE/OVERALL: Last but not least, I was really happy with the cost. The flavor was awesome, the service was so kind and welcoming, and the overall experience was to the point where I am ready to go again. Whenever I'm sick, I come here for pho and it heals me. Their menu has a wide variety of food that comes in huge, hot and fresh portions. They have the best egg rolls that I have had! The egg rolls come in portions of two, so if you're sharing with someone, you'll need to order two servings. The Vietnam Restaurant is in a building that has seen better days. Like most restaurants, the wait staff was limited. A single person took orders for about 9 tables. When the waitress arrived with iced water, I requested water with no ice. Her immediate non-verbal response was as if I had greatly inconvenienced her. (It worked out for her as another table needed an extra glass of water.) It took a while for her to return, and when I drank the water at the end of my meal, the water was unusually warm. The spring rolls were tasty. The second service issue was when I flagged down the waitress after another staff member delivered my main dish. I asked if the item was #X. Her response was immediately defensive and stated that I ordered #Y. (I only expected a response to my question, not an immediate defensive response with attitude telling me her impression of what she thought I did.) I selected this restaurant as I have been seeking Pho Ap Chao Thap Cam, and Vietnam Restaurant at least had a dish with crispy flat rice noodles. I did not send the dish back as the dish had rice noodles with meat-based proteins and I don't believe in unnecessary waste. It was very tasty, but unfortunately was not the crispy flat rice noodle dish I sought. Very good food but very poor customer service. When my family and I were in Memphis last month we drove out here because my mom was craving Vietnamese food. We actually had originally planned to go to another Vietnamese spot down the street but when we pulled up it was closed. So I quickly found this spot on Yelp. Upon walking through the door we were greeted by a nice lady that gave us menus. We ordered to-go. The menu is vast and the prices seem very fair. I didn't have any of the food, as I was going to a dinner with colleagues that night but my parents said it was ok and the portions were big! What I wanted to review on is the fact that I witnessed one of the male servers sneeze very loudly, forcefully and multiple times in the dining room and near the entrance of the kitchen without covering his nose and mouth AT ALL. He Didn't even try to. Even before COVID times, this would have majorly freaked me out. In hindsight, I should have strongly discouraged my parents from eating the food because of this but we had ordered quite a bit and we had already been waiting about 15 minutes, I didn't want to make them cancel their order. Thank god they didn't get sick from it. I get that there isn't a mask mandate in Memphis, but this is just common sense and overall cleanliness. read more

Hole-in-the-wall and authentic! Two words to describe Vietnam Restaurant. The prices are reasonable, the portions are HUGE! For appetizer got the tofu spring rolls with peanut sauce. If I could eat 10 of these, I would. I also love the shrimp ones. You can't go wrong with these. Also got the egg noodles in my pho with chicken and added vegetables. I couldn't finish it all. But the taste is so fresh, and you can just taste the authenticity. This is one of my favorite go-to restaurants in Memphis. And I didn't want to be in here either because once I walked in there were clouds of cigarette smoke. Yes inside. I didn't know this is one of the states where you could do that. What the f**k is wrong with Tennessee? And what is up with the regulars and workers in this restaurant thinking that it's a good idea to have your restaurant filled with clouds of smoke? It was really busy too. Kind of depressingly so considering the clouds of smoke. Anyway, she whipped me up a mid-price Vietnamese coffee that was very middle-of-the-road. Very strong. Probably a little bit less than average. I didn't have very much of it. It put me off a little bit that everything is stored and kept around lots and lots of smoke but even if that wasn't the case I wouldn't have loved this. And I certainly won't be able to come and eat here considering that. I wouldn't even want to eat takeout food from here considering how much smoke is on the inside and how everything smells like smoke. I smelled like smoke and I was only in here for 2 minutes. I love the fried rice here so much, and it's my favorite food here. The banh mi is also pretty good.

Not sure if it was just a bad night for them but we along with others in the restaurant waited over an hour and half for our food to be served. Food was good overall but it just couldn't make up for the terrible service and the long wait. Would maybe consider a takeout order or trying another Vietnamese restaurant near by to avoid the crazy long wait. People are so oblivious to just how good Vietnamese food is in Memphis!...of all places. Even better than the BBQ is the Vietnamese food. I'd say its the best in the country based on the 21 states I've been to. The closest to Vietnamese food in Vietnam that I've come across at home. This restaurant particularly is a fully immersive experience. Everyone is Vietnamese. Everyone is speaking Vietnamese. You have to be comfortable with standing out. There was a real "abroad" type of feel here. This would be a great experience for a novice traveler interested in what it might feel like in a foreign country. OK, so beginning in 2024 there is new ownership. That is usually a dicey consideration but in this case it worked out for the best!! Now the best Pho and recipes in general anywhere in the south. The service is more attentive now and most servers speak some English. But it is the food that shines here most; tastes like your in the fanciest restaurant in Vietnam! All of this comes at a price as their menu items have gone up maybe 35% making this a more special occasion venue more than a daily fare establishment. But if you want to experience truly wonderful pho and other Vietnamese specialties then this place is a must try. It is still plain Jane inside, and parking is challenging but worth every bit of the trouble. read more

She should not be working in any customer facing capacity. Also, every time I go there now, many menu items are out of stock. I mean ok I get that they're trying but a couple of times I ordered something and the lady ALWAYS gets it wrong and sometimes I feel bad returning it. Upon entering I was greeted by a dense wall of cigarette smoke infused air. You could just feel the ashes of thousands of previously smoked cigarettes that were likely caking every piece of cloth inside. Not that I dislike the smell of smoke that much, but it was kind of extreme, so if you abhor the smell of smoke, this place isn't for you. We were served by a waitress that I imagine was in high school. After quickly deciding what we wanted to order, we waited for about 15 minutes before our orders were finally taken. The waitress was very nice, but it just seemed like she wasn't paying much attention to anything going on around (and there were only like 2 other groups inside during that time). Vietnamese spring rolls w/ grilled cured ground pork (goi cuon nom) - was intrigued to try this because I've never had "grilled cured ground pork" in a spring roll before. It's actually grilled cured ground pork and in retrospect I don't know what else I could have been expecting. It wasn't bad, but it was just kind of weird. I guess that's my fault for being a little too adventurous... Pho w/ round steak and brisket - was not that great. I've had many bowls of pho in my time, and this did not hit the spot. The soup was really bland and flavorless. The meat had no flavor, no beefiness to it at all. It was also served NOT piping hot, but was only just a tad warmer than lukewarm. The only great thing I can say about this place is that they don't skimp on the bean sprouts and other toppings for your pho. We got plenty of that and it was great. If only the soup had been warm enough to actually warm up the bean sprouts though... Overall pretty disappointing pho. I don't recommend Vietnam Restaurant. Perhaps they were just having an off day when serving us (it seemed like they weren't getting too many customers), but the service took way too long, and the pho was just not memorable in any way. I've been here a couple of times now (nothing memorable) and my experience yesterday finally compelled me to write a review. This location is one of many Viet restaurants located within a 1 mile radius. Sometimes the service is friendly, sometimes extremely neglectful. The food has always been just okay. For example, the portion for the pork plate is the most meager out of all the Vietnamese restaurants. But I digress, yesterday's experience was just straight up bad. It took ages and ages for our food to come out, one of our orders was completely forgotten, the noodles in my bowl were mostly broken pieces, which makes me think they just dragged the dregs of the pot. My menu stated that there is shrimp in the entree and I didn't even see so much as a krill. No one refilled our water, the owners kid was running around the restaurant completely unchecked and screaming. With the number of other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, I just don't feel compelled to keep going to this location. read more
