I've been to Pho Nomenal several times (I love their pho!), but I decided to try their spicy beef and pork noodle (P7 - bún bò huế) and I was very impressed! The spiciness might scare some people, but it's not spicy in the way you might think! The broth was very flavorful with a thicker noodle, which was a nice change from the vermicelli! We also got an order of fresh spring rolls (A3) which are always a win and some pot stickers (A6), which I usually don't get, but was also a nice change! We also got an iced Vietnamese coffee - this was a little sweeter and I would have preferred more of the stronger coffee flavor, but was otherwise great! I have avoided this place for several months. The last visit, our server didn't want to take care of us. Drinks were never filled. We were never checked up on. We had to ask for containers. The young gal thought she was too good to "serve" her customers. She sat behind the counter and didn't even move. There's only been a couple times I have never tipped a server and the last time I was here was one of those times. As a server for 36 years, how does one not take care if their guests? Especially if it's your family's joint? Well, today my daughter and I really wanted Vietnamese food. We had pho last week but we drove all the way into Meridian for it. We were both feeling lazy so as reluctant as I was to come to this joint again, we decided to come in for the convenience of it's location and not the service. What I love about this joint is that you will always get a hella good bowl of whatever you order. Be it pho, bun bo hue, bo kho. It's going to be delicious I was sad that I stayed away from this place. They legit push out good food. But I refused to be treated like garbage. It was an older lady that worked today. She was really sweet. She had the most beautiful smile of her face when she greeted us. My daughter and I knew what we wanted so after waters were dropped off, so we turned in our order right away with her. My daughter ordered the bo kho (Vietnamese beef stew) and I got the chicken pho. I can't tell you how awesome our bowls looked! The steam coming out of the bowls were fierce! It was hot! My pho looked so good. Hearty chunks of chicken in top. The broth was clear and clean. Topped with fresh cilantro and onion. I added some fish sauce, Sriracha, basil and jalapenos to that baby and it was perfection. The broth was so good! It was just what I needed since I haven't really felt good the last couple days. My noodles were cooked perfectly and had a great chew to it. I had been wanting a good bowl of chicken pho and Pho Nomenal delivered it today. I'm so happy we stopped in today to grab these bowls of goodness. I was not impressed in the slightest. We went there being the only customers in the place. We ordered specialty drinks and regular beef pho. The pho was extremely bland and the meat was tough. No matter how much hot sauce, salt or lime added it didn't make a difference. I took my grand daughter here for her first experience and it wasn't a place I'd partake again. We stopped here on the last day of a road trip before heading back to Seattle, and were very skeptical about getting decent Pho in Boise, but it was a cold rainy evening and we were craving comfort food. OMG this was some of the best Pho we've had in ages and easily compares to the best of the best Phos in the country. The beef broth was deep and rich and flavorful while still clear, the meat was tender and juice, the bowl was very well balanced and a huge portion. My wife's veggie pho was also exquisite, this is one that most restaurants don't really bother with, but it was clearly made with a lot of care and attention and pride. The service was quick and very friendly and the ambiance was what you'd expect at a typical pho place. The aunty who owns and runs the place was such a joy to talk to and was so appreciative of us when we told her how much we loved the food and how she could give some of the very famous names in the Pacific Northwest a run for their money. This was my Pho experience and it did not disappoint! It's surprisingly really cute inside for being at the end of a strip mall but they've done a really good job with the decor & music. We went for lunch and there was a lot of people in there! It appears to be a family ran business so the service was a bit slower but I have empathy for that. The Pho broth was so good and hot! Clearly a mom & pop shop which has a charm of its own these days. The music: I'll get that out of the way. If Vietnamese music has a Tony Orlando & Dawn, that's what's playing. I'm doing my best to tune it out. I've been eating Vietnamese food for 40 years and somehow never made it to eating Huê soup (named for the coastal city). Today that changed. The broth was rich and satisfying, not overly complex but a tad salty. Spicy but about the most you'd expect from Vietnamese food which isn't know for being as spicy as some of its neighbors. The accompaniments were bean sprouts, jalapeños, lime, and basil. Sadly no sawtooth herb/ngo gai or rau ram. I get it: it's unfamiliar to most Americans so they probably just leave it on the plate. There was a chili, shallot, lemongrass sambal that was nice. I went through a 2nd serving of it and probably would have eaten a third. It was aromatic and lightly spicy without being overpowering. The noodles were round, thick spaghetti like ones, not the pad Thai or sen lek noodles I'm used to and prefer. Not just the flavor but they're easier to manage with chopsticks when slippery. Lastly, the meat. The star of any phő. There was steak (though not tai or raw), brisket, and a sort of pork sausage/meatloaf. All were good, though the beef was my favorite. There were a couple of large silver dollar sized bits of fat floating in the soup which I fished out. Yes, they add flavor but I'm not going to eat them. It was my health conscious decision for today. It was the meats that pushed me to try it after decades of sidelong curious glances seeing it at other people's tables. Or rather, it was the absence of the usual intimidating meats: beef tendon and blood sausage which one sometimes finds in the Vietnamese-food-for-Vietnamese-people restaurants. Usually I bemoan dumbing down recipes for American palates but today, yup... I get it. It lowered a barrier for me. We love the food here - the pho nominal is our favorite- the broth is the best in Boise, the meats and portion sizes are perfection. We aren't difficult people but we consider a meal out a pleasant experience. Tonight, the server was a young guy we have had before with no issues but tonight he delivered our meals, with a drop & go attitude, never returned to check on anything, basically never came near us. After trying to catch him at the counter and asking him 3 times for containers to take our food home, he ignored us completely, My husband took our bowls up to the counter - he was handed some bowls, no comment or apology for treating us like we were unvisible. On prior visits, our bowls were prepared for us to take home. We have always been so complimentary about the food, our tips are good refecting the food and service. I have always enjoyed their food. Today I got the Beef Pho. The tendon and the Meatballs were kind of gross but the brisket was good. The flavor is always nice. I feel like the place could use a cleaning in general and on some of their sauce bottles, and I feel like their service is always kind of strange. I had heard mixed reviews and decided to check it out for myself. Overall, everything was just ok. Food: 3/5. The best item was the chicken wings. Everything else was just ok. I got the killer combo bowl. The shrimp was good. The meat, egg rolls, and cilantro were not cut enough. I got the peach iced tea to drink and that was pretty good, but I feel it was overpriced for what it was. Service: 4/5. There was one main gentleman that handed us menus and took our order. He was very nice and had good recommendations. He said that the vegetarian spring rolls would take a few minutes but they came out quicker than expected. Our first visit after so many recommendations, and positive reviews on Yelp. We followed all the rules. (1) Went to the counter to order (2) Reviewed the menu, ordered, and picked out a table Our order came with its sides but there was no aroma. I was expecting to inhale all the deliciousness from my bowl as well as my wife's bowl and yet there was nothing. The bowls were hot, not piping hot, and even though I asked for spicy, it was not spicy. I added about half a bottle of chili sauce from the table. My wife wanted more limes so I left the table and went to the counter to ask the young lady for more limes. She asked me how many and I told her about 3-4. I continued with my bowl, which was the P7. The online menus will say Vegan but the menus in the restaurant say vegetarian. I certainly hope that the owners and the staff know the difference as they are not the same thing. My wife had the P5 - Chicken I knew we were in trouble when she consistently played with her noodles which were different than my noodles. There is no explanation as to why one bowl gets a vermicelli noodle while another bowl gets a fatter noodle. I kept adding spicy chili sauce and my wife kept waiting for the limes. SPOILER: The limes never arrived My wife took the rest of her bowl home and added some limes to it the day after and she didn't like it. Nice clean place. Simple furniture and wall art. About 3/4 of the tables were occupied on a Tuesday night. Not bad for a place that opened last week. Odering at the counter is not efficient since they ask for payment up front (including the tip). Everyone has to wait on the people in front of them to order, get a table assigned and then pay. This is done at the same station as they only have one cash register. Very poor first impression. Maybe that meets a cultural norm somewhere in the world, but it doesn't play well in Idaho. One star deducted. The order was filled quickly and delivered to our table. The photos captured the food. Hue Spicy Beef Noodle Bowl (Bun Bo Hue) and a Pork Rice plate. Both were very tasty. I prefer the thicker noodles that are traditionally in Hue soup. The soup was full of beef and tendon, but the broth was pretty average. One star deducted. The pork with the plate was nicely marinated and quite tasty. I'm giving it the 5 star for the Treasure Valley as it's probably my favorite one around here. I can get full with a large here and they load the green onions and cilantro on here. I got my meal for takeout and the gentleman at the front desk was halfway through processing my payment when the phone rang, he quickly set my bag of food on the counter and gave me my card back. This was such a disappointment on so many levels. Do not waste your time or money here. First thing that was off was that you are directed to the counter to order, pay, and tip before being directed to your assigned table. Ours was supposedly "cleaned" but had dirty sticky napkins on both the table next to the napkin dispenser, and on the floor. One of the staff busing tables was simply brushing crumbs from tables onto the floor as well. Food arrived at different times, my husbands sandwich arriving first. Overall he said it was fine, but not amazing. Overall pretty small. Then arrived our shrimp appetizer. Biting into one, we found it to be raw and cold. I brought it to the staffs attention, so they removed it from our bill, promising to remake it and make sure it was cooked. When it arrived back at our table it was the exact same plate, same wrapped shrimp just cooked longer. How do I know? The sauce had crumbs in it from our initial dipping and it was short the two shrimp my husband and I bit into, as well as the salad missing several items that I had eaten already. So not a new plate at all. The vegan pho was a major disappointment as well. Broth was alright, but the vegan "meat" were foul. Texture was like boiled paste. They should just stick to traditional tofu or just a variety of veggies. Felt like they were trying to put variety into the bowl with different colors.... As flavor for the "meats" were non-existent. Veggies would have lended more flavor and variety to the soup. We also ordered a milk tea with boba. Flavor was good, but it was 75% ice in our cup. Barely any actual tea. Place is overpriced. Dirty. And food is subpar flavor wise and apparently a gamble if it's even going to be cooked. We will not be returning. read more
