Servers just ok, but the cashier has zero customer service skill(our hunch is he's the owner--coz he acts like he owns the place, and the people in it). After my meal with 2 other folks, we requested for the bill, the guy in the counter loudly said "You MUST pay here!" (pointing to his counter) which is about 4-5 ft. from us. We said oh-sorry its fine -besides the counter is right by the door to No. 3. rd. Our group smiled and look at each other whispering "MUST!??"-and we just shrugged it off since we are having good conversation, and thought it could just be a grammar thing. We went up the counter and while paying, one of us took a couple of those free candies in a jar...the guy in the counter just blurted out "ONE Only!!!" we were shock by his reaction and we said - "seriously? Pho Lan is cheap, delicious, and has some of the best deep fried spring rolls around. While there are definitely better pho places in the Lower Mainland, in a pinch, Pho Lan will easily whisk you away to noodle-y broth heaven, wrapped in a blanket of Vietnamese coffee and sprinkled with crispy spring rolls for good measure. Yes the spring rolls are that good! I definitely agree that the interior is a bit dated, and in my mind the broth to noodle ratio is a bit off (too much broth, not enough noodles), but you don't need a fancy place to enjoy pho and the broth is still very tasty! According to my dad, pho lan has been here for more than 15 years. That is why the interior design of the restaurant is so old. Pho lan certainly needs a renovation. I have been to pho lan more than 20 times. Because Richmond doesn't have too many Vietnamese restaurant, pho lan is one of the most popular pho place to go to on a rainy/gloomy/cold day. The restaurant is small and it is pack at noon and dinner time especially on a rainy day. I have never waited for more than 10 minutes to be seated. It goes by fast and you are seated quick. There are 1-2 servers and 1 greeter in the front. The manager/owner is always there. Server are quick with food order and process. Once order, food is delivered ASAP. If you order pho, it comes to your table within 3-5 mins. If it's other dishes, it may take longer. For the most part, I love how fast it is so if you're in a rush - I would recommend pho lan! Pho is delicious. I usually order pho tai or pho bo vien or a mix of both. Maybe a side of spring rolls or salad rolls. Nothing crazy. Pho lan has the best pho in Richmond. I haven't found anywhere else better yet. A lot of people would agree too! I give pho lan a 4 and not a 5 because of the interior design. Seriously, don't judge this place by its appearance. It's totally run down and maybe even slightly dilapidated from the outside, but I promise you the food is completely worth it. My must-get item every time I'm there is the deep fried spring roll. The skin is so crispy and the flavours of the fillings are just right. Their pho might just be the best one in Richmond; broth, broth, broth. Very generous portions, especially concerning the meat. If you think you can tackle the large, you're probably wrong. I was a bit shocked when the large came out. I mean, the bowl is big enough to use as a small face basin. Service is here very efficient, so the food comes out rather quickly. Gotta admit...it was a bit funhouse-type creepy walking from the back parking to the front of the restaurant with the dark narrow hallway, mystery doors...finally the kitchen. The place definitely had a hole-in-the-wall feel. But the food was excellent. My favorite thing to order is lemongrass chicken on rice. My mother had beef pho and I ordered a side spring roll. The platter I received was generous, no skimping on the chicken at all...kinda even got a bit overwhelmed. The food on the plate was plentiful...then tacking the springroll made getting through my lunch a task. All the food was excellent in quality and presentation. One of the better places for pho in the Garden City of Richmond, Pho Lan is a family-owned operation that offers customers a variety of dishes from Vietnam. Unlike some pho restaurants, Pho Lan's selection of sizes comes in three. Don't make the same mistake and order a large because I was surprised when it was much bigger than the conventional larges. Can't go wrong with an order of spring rolls and the house special. You receive and generous portion of meats, noodles and a savoury broth that's perfect for rainy days. Staff members are sometimes moody, but friendly most of the time. The restaurant itself can be a little cleaner, but it's certainly not the worst I've seen. I was psyched to try this place after learning that they have dedicated vegetarian menu from Lindsay of 365 Days of Dining. Our party of 2 dropped by just past noon on a Wednesday and were quickly seated by a friendly gentleman at the front. A pot of tea and cups came straight away. Our dishes arrived fairly quickly. I was impressed that the waiter (who wasn't the one who took our order) actually knew who each dish belonged to. I had the medium Spicy Bun Bo Hue Noodle Soup (Vegetarian) - it was very flavourful without being overly salty or oily. The spice level was just right for me, but I have pretty low spice tolerance so it might not be spicy enough for many. However, I did see that the waiter brought another table a dish of peppers (jalapenos?) so I guess that would solve the problem for those wanting more spice. With the bean sprouts and basil added, the dish was surprisingly refreshing and I would definitely order it again. Only minuses were that the tofu in the dish did not soak up the soup at all and was lacking in flavour; also, the noodles (though delicious!) were all broken up (rather than in long strands), making them difficult to pick up. My dining partner had the Vegetarian Tofu Caramel with Ginger on Steamed Rice -she didn't detect much of a sweet/gingery taste in the tofu, but I suppose it's a decent option if you're looking for a simpler dish. The bill listed my medium vegetarian pho as $8, but on the vegetarian menu it was only $7.50, so we asked the waitress (the owner, maybe?) to clarify, only to receive a curt explanation that she had forgotten to update the vegetarian menu to reflect the increase in price (the regular menu had been updated). Although the 50 cents is not a big deal, the waitress' dismissive attitude was a bit annoying, especially given that it was her mistake. Despite this blip, I'll definitely be back for their vegetarian pho, which (as far as I know) there isn't much of in Richmond/Vancouver! Pho: the beef is of good quality, proportion between noodles and beef is good, though the soup base tastes flat, like salt in water with very minimum broth. Vermicelli bowl: I ordered the BBQ pork with fried spring rolls (nam) and I have to say the jam is REALLY good and authentic. The BBQ pork was also very good - juicy, not too dry, done just right. Though I was a bit disappointed with the lack of finesse in the way they cut the lettuce, and the disproportionate amount of vermicelli with lettuce and nuts. This is one spot frequented by my brother, who has deemed himself the pho king. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was just about full. I ordered a small bo bun hue, and my brother got am extra large house pho. My bo bun hue had a little too much fish sauce for my liking (and I really enjoy fish sauce). The pork hock is not glamorous to eat but I enjoyed it in my soup. My brothers pho was excellent value for $12. The soup was very tasty and there was tons of meat in both soups. When I came to this restaurant I was greeted rudely by the waiter, she seemed like she dislikes her job and fair enough; the food was okay but I think it's not worth it cause of their customer service. Not only the waiter was rude but they also got my friend's order incorrect. When I went up to pay to the cashier, he literally just said a number without context and I said what I had nicely and then he proceeded to yell at me in front of everyone in the restaurant. THE WORST SERVICE EVER. I AM IN AWE AT HOW TERRIBLE THIS EXPERIENCE WAS. This was my second time here & I after today's experience, it will be my LAST. The lady server was unfriendly from the moment our group sat down (and it was only us 3 girls, a small quiet group). We decided to come here for a cheap yet tasty dinner. I ordered a small rare beef pho with beef balls with a side of a spring roll. When my order came, my pho was not steaming, as my friends bowls of pho were both steaming. That wasn't a major issue because it was still warm enough to enjoy. However, problems arose when 5 minutes later, my broth was basically cooled down & had not cooked my rare beef. I waved the waitress down & asked for my bowl to simply be reheated in the microwave so that my beef could cook. As an immunosuppressed consumer, this was not a thing of nit-pickiness, but a concern for my own health as well. All I asked was for my bowl to be reheated; I did not demand or ask for a replacement or a refund. I thought I was being quite simple about it. However, the waitress was clearly upset & proceeded to tell me that next time, I should order cooked beef. I asked her to repeat herself because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She proceeded to tell me the same thing, only more aggressively before storming off to microwave my broth. BUT IT DOESN'T END HERE. Not knowing that I was also vietnamese, she began to sh*t talk me in our language to her co-worker in the kitchen. After a couple minutes, she brought the bowl out to a male server and told him in vietnamese to "throw in some hot water for that woman". Finally, my bowl came, and it was hot enough to cook my beef this time. As my friends and I were finishing up our meal, the lady server glared at me whenever she had the chance to be facing me. In awe of this horrible experience, we were about to pack up when the man at the front desk rudely called out to us :"You paying separate or together?". We said separate, and right away he said: "OK come here." He basically KICKED US OUT of their restaurant, and we were literally there for just under and hour. My total came to $12.10, but I didn't have a dime so I gave him $20.25 because I thought the quarter would help because it was less change for him to give. Instead, he looked at me and said "TEN, TEN CENTS" & I told him I didn't have a dime. He slammed my quarter back down & just took the $20. The whole .90 cents he gave back??? He slammed each coin down one by one. He even did that to my other 2 friends who paid by cash. Overall, I am super unimpressed. I know there isn't much to expect from asian restaurants, but this was the lowest of the low. The entire hour that we were in there eating was so uncomfortable! Just not how any restaurant should be. It's no wonder why it's been dead both times I've been here. Do yourself a favor & dine somewhere else. read more

A friend of mine told me that Pho Lan has a very delicious fried spring roll. So I couldn't wait to get there. Finally, I dropped in today and omigosh, it's a NO for me. I ordered their small special Pho with beef $9.00 and a side order of fried spring roll $3.00. One bite of the spring roll didn't agree to my tastebuds and the beef Pho, just can't take it in. The broth base is far from I usually tasted at PhoViet including the spring roll, sorry to say that. I had to really forced myself to finish off that one spring roll and the beef Pho, I ate most of the beef pcs. which were not that palatable, and left remnants of the noodles and broth. I paid $12.00 for the two dishes, I had to eat something. But no, I won't be coming back and no I won't recommend it to anybody. Best Pho in Richmond I eat at Pho Lan regularly during the work week for lunch. I usually order the soup with well done beef, tendon and tripe, and a deep fried spring roll. I really love Vietnamese food and this restaurant. Their spring rolls are the best I have had so far and their Pho broth is fantastic. Well im from a country which doesnt need to tip for the service casually, but whenever i go traveling around north america and europe i always tipped generally cos you know, i believe most of ppl ever did part time job like table service and stuff? Anyways i meant to say, i understand being a waitress/waiter is really a hard work. Cos i had 2 years of experience working as a waitress in the restaurants. But seriously, this restaurant, the service is the most terrible one ive ever had in my whole life. For the very first time. I refused to tip them. And the pho? Seriously, just tasted exactly like msg, i have been lived in LA for few months, i had pho most likely 3times a week, so i know what a really good pho tasted like. Most disgusting place to eat. Had a bowl of House Specialty Noodles (with raw beef). While having my soup, I was watching the owner's son wiping the table next to me. With the same rag, he would wipe the table, the surface of the seat that the previous customer just sat, the napkin dispenser, the exterior of the stainless teapot. As he was walking by our table, he cleared some of the dirty dishes from our table. We asked for two empty bowls earlier, thinking we might share some food. Instead, we only get to use one. This man took the empty bowl and puts it back in the shelve for the next customer. I thought that was disgusting. That same evening, I had the worst diarrhea in my life. My wife and I walked in via the back entrance, it was very dirty overall, lots of flies. Wife ordered a number 9 pho, and a spring roll. She had diarrhea till the next day. Service is questionable but food is quite good compared to all the generic viet resturants. I ordered the lemon grass chicken and pork chop on rice. Chicken was tender and tasted better than the overcooked chewy pork chop. Portion size is big too, their large is gigantic and goes by small, medium, and large for pho. I got another rice dish the next day on my break and they overfilled my container with too much rice. But we have been coming for 15 years and have never gotten sick. The good is always consistently good. If you come for dinner, you can also park next door (by Granville Ave). Our favourites: Salad roll, spring roll, shrimp cake Any type of pho including the spicy hue city pho. Large is huge. This is a great Vietnamese restaurant. I have been eating from here for the last 7 years since I moved to Richmond. The portions are very generous and the staff is very friendly. All vegetables are fresh and broth seems to be fresh as well, is very aromatic and does not seem watered down like other places do. The beef is a nice colour and the but is great as well. Menu covers your everything that your typical Vietnamese restaurant with some specials as well. The only downfall if there is one is that it's so popular that at lunch sometimes you may have to wait for a table. However, that in itself says a lot about how great the food is. read more

For everything it might lack in dining ambience, this is my favourite neighbourhood hole in the wall because the food stands alone. The spring rolls and skewers are excellent but don't kid yourself- you should be there for the pho. Their pho has a deep, balanced broth and if you're really hungry their large is basically a washbasin of soup. If you go at lunch or dinner hour be prepared for it to be super busy so be ready to get in and out quickly (which to me is part of the charm, but wouldn't be for everybody). Great price and consistent quality keep me coming back! It's no wonder they've been going strong for 19 years! Try it! read more
