Pho King is still hands down the best place for hủ tiếu Nam Vang in SD. I usually get the dry (kho) version but when I want it soup-y, the broth is rich and comforting without being too heavy. The noodles have great texture, and you have the option of choosing the normal (pho) noodles or the glass (chewy) noodles. Parking-wise, the lot isn't huge, but people usually come and go pretty quickly. There's also some street parking nearby, so it's manageable with a little patience. I've been coming here for a few years and just realized I never left a review. I went yesterday, July 12, 2026, with a friend, and it wasn't very busy. Our server forgot my preserved lemon/salted lemonade (chanh muoi), and then seemed to disappear. I went up to the front counter and waited for someone to help. When the cashier came over, I jokingly asked if our server had gone on break or gone home. She smiled and asked what was wrong, so I had to point to the drink on the menu because my Vietnamese has really gone downhill. My tones and pronunciation probably give them a headache. The soup was also much saltier than I remember, and that's saying something because I usually love salty food. The chanh muoi was really refreshing and was probably my favorite part of the meal. This place has been around for decades. Even though it's called Pho King, they are known for their Hu tieu kho which is the dry noodle version. It comes with a side of broth and pork sauce. You can order dry and it comes with a side of broth or order the broth version. You can to customize your noodle type and pick small or large bowl. All the bowls are the same price with $13.50 for the small. There are two types of noodles to choose from. The clear chewy or the one that looks like pho noodles. We ordered: #25 hu tieu king kho: this one is dry noodles only #28 hủ tiếu nam vang nước: This one is with broth only. #31 hu tieu mi kho: this one is dry with egg noodle and rice noodle For #28, we didn't pick any of the two noodle option but picked the fat flat stir fry noodles. Pho King is our regular spot to go when we are craving Soups. We come here once a week. Our usual favorite here is the " Hu Tieu My Tho Nuoc ", and the " Hu Tieu My Tho Kho ". I dont know how to translate that, but one of them is a Soup and the other one has the exact ingredients but it comes with a red Sauce instead of a broth. Both are delicious. Everything here is good. I've been here probably a dozen times since this is the place not for Phở, but here people came for another dish called hủ tiếu nam vang and hủ tiếu mỹ tho, which I didn't find many places in SD would offer as a signature dish. The restaurant runs by the parents of singer Nguyen Khang who is also a colleague of my cousin, so every time he came to town we would come here and eat lunch or breakfast. I decided to give this spot a try, and it instantly gave me classic mom-and-pop restaurant vibes. The decor was simple, nothing fancy, but the tables were clean and the place felt welcoming. The owner struck up a conversation and asked if I was Lao or Cambodian; I let him know I'm Filipino. He was incredibly polite and we ended up chatting about Vietnamese and Filipino food, which added a nice personal touch to the visit. Since it was way too hot for pho that day, I went with the cơm sườn nướng (grilled pork chops). He also recommended the bò nướng bánh tráng, which turned out to be a fun surprise. I had no idea they offered build-your-own spring rolls--this was the first place I've seen do that, and it made the meal more interactive. The food was good overall--not the best I've ever had, but definitely far from the worst. What really made the experience stand out, though, was how friendly and welcoming the owner was. Great service, the man that served us was very friendly, helpful in making recommendations and quality checked to see if we were enjoying our meal. I ordered the Hu tieu my tho kho as per his recommendation. He said it was most popular and a south Vietnam dish. He asked if I'd had it before when he brought it to the table. I hadn't, so he explained how to eat it which I thought was super nice. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The sauce was delicious. The side broth was yummy. The toppings were great, I enjoyed the noodles. I will say when I went back a second time and ordered the same thing - I got a totally different sauce which tasted just like soy sauce and it really made the dish not that great. Not as yummy and satisfying as the first time time. The first time the sauce was red in color and the second time the sauce was dark dark brown. My husband had the rare steak, brisket, beef ball pho and enjoyed it as well. I tried it and thought it was good, broth was tasty and noodles were cooked nicely. My grandma came here the other day and then brought us an order of the Banh Canh Cua (some sort of soup with bean sprouts, crab meat, shrimp, green onions, cha, and udon). The broth tasted light and clean. The shrimp was deveined and tasted so supple and delicious (not over cooked). I love the cooked beansprouts in it. The udon was hard to grab with chopsticks but tasted nicely cooked (not over nor under). Since we were home, I added some frozen dumpling and sliced celery and it tasted incredible all together. What was supposed to be a normal brunch quickly became extremely unsettling. While eating pho, both my boyfriend and I felt nauseous due to a strong odor in the dining area. After looking around, we discovered a dead rat inside a heater on the floor directly next to our booth. What a hidden gem. I have been living next to place for years and finally decided to check this place out. I thought it was another typical pho shop but this place actually specializes in hu tieu! I ordered the hu tieu nam Vang (rice noodle, dry version, soup on the side) order a large bowl for only $1 more! It was sooo good! So flavorful and portion size was perfect! So, we came in so I could have a nice lunch with my kids. It wasn't busy at all. We ordered fried egg rolls, drinks, and our pho. The pho itself was good. However, usually drinks and egg rolls come out first. ESPECIALLY the drinks. I asked a few times and they said yeah, kind of brushing me off. Then it started getting busy with the lunch rush. So we asked again about our drinks. Mind you, we're almost done with our food. Then they say they're busy?!?! But there were literally 1-2 tables taken when we came in. So we should have gotten our drinks first, at the very least before it started getting busy. And that's not something a restaurant should say, or at least can say in another manner. This is one of the only pho places (at least that I've been able to find) that serve the delicious glass noodles with their seafood noodle - every other place I've been only offers rice noodle or egg noodle. Their seafood glass noodle soup is my favorite dish here (I believe it's #26 or #28 depending if you want intestine or not). Their regular pho is also very good and what my husband orders. Their spring rolls are some of the freshest I have ever had and I am convinced they must roll them upon ordering. My kids got the shrimp fried rice which they thoroughly enjoyed. The only thing I was only ok about was the beef chow fun- while it wasn't terrible (it did have a good mix of veggies), I was not impressed with the chew and texture of the noodles for the chow fun. I don't like Pho King...I LOVE Pho King! I could come here morning, noon, and night! LOLLLLLLLL! I have worked near here forever and have never gone in. But my buds said it's good, and it is! What I like is that there's more choices and not just pho. I ordered my favorite, #58...grilled chicken and egg rolls over vermicelli. Soooooo good! And the portion is good! I can't believe I haven't been here! They also have really good iced coffee drinks, not like the other places that give you the coffee and you have to wait for it and then pour over ice. One of my new favorites. The pho is so good. Place is authentic. Affordable was about $23 for two bowls of pho. The broth was so flavorful. I rarely finish the whole thing but I finished the small even wanted to lick the plate. Loved it and they have lots of food options. Even the pho had lots of options including beef, perk, chicken or seafood. Loved it already want to go back. My daughter and I are fans of phở and travel all over San Diego looking for the best phở restaurants. For this we made a trip to the Little Saigon 'neighborhood' of San Diego. Really just a couple blocks on El Cajon Boulevard with a concentration of Vietnamese businesses. We were enticed by the catchy name of the restaurant. The atmosphere is "family restaurant" with no frills. An elderly woman was sitting by the entrance making eggrolls and softly singing in Vietnamese. The husband was taking orders and serving food. The service was quick. Shared the eggrolls as an appetizer and they were delicious. Great phở starts with great broth and the broth here is excellent. Since my usual go to Pho restaurant has been under new non-Vietnamese ownership, I've been on the search for a new authentic Pho restaurant. This week, I tried Pho King, in the Vietnamese concentrated area of El Cajon Blvd. The restaurant is a lot larger than it looks from the outside, so if you see most of the tables taken, there is a whole left side unseen until you get in the doors. One of the first things I noticed was that the front doors were kind of dirty with lots of smudges on both sides of the glass. Not a great first impression, but not something to turn me away. The workers there seemed to be in their own world as we stood waiting to be seated. One server, a very young guy with very short hair, greeted us and sat us right away when he saw us. He ended up being our server for the meal and was wonderful. He was on top of bringing everything we ordered and in good time. I had asked for a bowl of Nuoc Beo (fatty broth) to accompany my Pho (as I always do) and he didn't forget to bring it out like most other restaurants do. I ordered my usual - Pho Gan Sach (Pho with tendon & tripe). They are extremely generous with the amount of tendon and tripe, which is not the case at many other Pho places I've eaten at as of late. My partner ordered the Pho Dac Biet (#9 on the menu). We usually order small, but decided to get large since we noticed that restaurants have recently shrunk the portions of their Pho. Well, it was quite a pleasant surprise to see that Pho King did not shrink their portions and were quite generous with the noodles and proteins. The large should have been labeled X-Large compared to other restaurants. No complaints here, since it is just $1 more for large. Both our Phos were good and boy, were we stuffed with the amount they served. I ended the meal with a durian shake, which was alright. There should have been more durian in the shake, but it wasn't bad. As much as I would come right back next time I crave Pho, I need to try other restaurants first. But I will definitely be back to Pho King again. read more

When I started volunteering in the Little Saigon District, I was told the specialty here is hu tieu, a regional dish from south Vietnam. I always go with Hu Tieu King Kho, which comes with shrimp, fish ball, squid, bbq pork, and ground pork. This is served dry on top of clear or rice noodles, with the broth on the side. This place has been super consistent when my other regular go to spots have failed (ban lao, tu thanh) for my soup fix. I always get the hu tieu here despite the place being called Pho King. I ordered the Pho once and I won't order it again. Pho Van does pho better. This place should change it's name as EVERY vietnamese person that goes here only for their hu tieu soup and for good reason. I go on average 1-2 times a week and it always hits the spot. Service is always good and it always fills me up. Still decently priced despite the inflation price hikes all over. I believe it's $11+tax at the time of this review. They're closed Weds Thurs due to staffing shortages mostly cooks. Owner says it will take years to train another person as this hu tieu soup is their bread and butter and they don't want to eff it up. People also drive down from OC for this stuff. The service here was horrible and racist. I went with 13yo daughter here and as soon as we sit down, the waiter asks if we were Vietnamese. I say no. He's disappointed. He asks if we're Chinese. I say no. He asks us "what are you?" I say Korean and he laughs and goes, "oh that's why you have small eyes." I'm like wtf? Who the hell do you think you are? And he's telling this to my daughter. Really appreciate that there is parking available because so many other pho restaurants around the area require you to find parking in paid lots or the street. We had to drive around to two different pho restaurants nearby before settling with pho king for this reason. The restaurant is very clean and quiet. They get lots of people ordering to go during business hours. I can see how many have experienced some difficulty with the service. Also don't expect them to come around to refill the waters, you are going to need to ask for things. While it is slow, at least they get the job done. I ordered a small number 9 pho special and quite enjoyed it. Portion wise, the small size was just enough to satisfy and not cause me to feel overly full or bloated. I think that you get more noodles, especially once it expands, than meat or soup. To me it was okay, but I have had much much better. In my opinion it should have been $7.95 for the small instead of $8.95. Taste wise the soup has a unique flavor to it, almost like they added garlic to the broth. The side of veggies for my pho did not come with basil, only a slice of lime, some fresh jalapeños, a leaf of some sort, and bean sprouts. The noodles were nice and bouncy. Wow how many pho king fantastic restaurants can there be jam packed together in one little strip mall?? Basically you have a lot of good options in this area and now you have another good Vietnamese option. It's a nice little restaurant but it isn't very Americanized. This is the real deal and they have some really good dishes worth finding on their menu. I wilk be back to give more of their menu a try. This round I tried the Pho and eggrolls.
