The amazing crème brûlée!
Alicia W.

I had no idea this was a vegan spot when I walked in! I managed to snag a street parking spot right in front (score!), and it was well worth the effort. The menu felt a bit daunting with all the options, but I'm so glad I went with the Crispy Chicken Banh Mi. The vegetables were incredibly fresh, and the mock crispy chicken was like magic. It tasted exactly like Popeyes fried chicken but without any of the actual meat. It wasn't overly salty, and the texture was amazingly authentic. I felt like it needed just one more thing, so I grabbed the hoisin. It totally unlocked the most amazing flavor profile from the chicken! Combined with the fresh carrots, crispy cucumber, and daikon, it was perfect. I also really appreciated that they carefully peeled the seeds out of the jalapeños--that kind of detail makes me trust a kitchen immediately. You can tell they truly care about the customer. Honestly, it was one of the best banh mi sandwiches I've ever had. For dessert, I tried the vegan creme brûlée and it was SO GOOD. The sugar layer was expertly and evenly torched, and the crème itself... I don't know what kind of magic they used to make it taste like the real thing. I also had to try their chocolate pudding, and it was so rich with the same perfected textures and was just like whole milk pudding! So delicious Regarding the prices--yes, they are a bit higher, but it's clear this is how they sustain a humble business in a world where so many small spots were forced to close after COVID. They are surviving tumultuous, uncertain times, and the quality and freshness of the food make it 100% worth the price to me. I would trust these people with my life in a tsunami. I've never had vegan food this delicious, fresh, and authentic. This is a must-try in El Cajon and I'm so excited to come back and explore more of the menu!

House special combo banh mi with pork belly and crispy pork
Elisa L.

Delicious vegan Viet spot, they deserve their flowers!! Our group of 3 came around 11:45 am on a Sunday and were seated promptly. Upon sitting, the super nice waitress introduced the restaurant's story and process and recommended us some dishes. The menu has over 50 pages and so so many items, the most I've ever seen which was super impressive! We shared 4 dishes among 3 people and were stuffed! -Helen pancake (4.5/5): Came with a side of meatballs in a sweet fish sauce and fresh veggies. The pancake was nicely crispy when fresh and the meatball was savory and paired well with the veggies. -House special combo banh mi (5/5): Loaded with pork belly, crispy pork, and fresh veggies. The bread was so good and crispy and I loved the combination of flavors. -Peking duck spring roll (5/5): Came with crispy duck and a tasty dipping sauce. The crisp and flavor were amazing! -Helen special fried rice (4/5): We chosen shaken beef and it also came with vegan ham. The rice needed a little more flavor but the shaken beef was delicious, tender and had a crispy exterior. They also gave us free dessert which was so sweet! We had the raspberry shortcake cookies, creme brulee, matcha pudding and cheesecake pudding which all were good. I liked the creme brulee and matcha pudding especially! Not too sweet and the texture was great. There is a small parking lot in the back where we were able to find parking. Decent amount of tables and clean inside with an all green exterior and interior. Their water is infused with lychee and apple which was super refreshing and tasty. They were great in refilling our waters and checked on us too. It is very impressive that everything is vegan, gluten free, organic and made fresh in-house and shipped from their commercial kitchen in LA daily. You can truly taste the freshness and quality and is worth the higher price tag. I will definitely come back!

Their infused water is sooo good

Heard good things about them and finally went to try after hearing they made it to Yelp's top 100 list, which is so deserved! The restaurant is a green color inside and out and cutely decorated. The woman working was super friendly and helpful in explaining their impressively extensive menu (over 1000 items?!). Came with my sister and vegetarian cousin and we all agreed everything was DELICIOUS! The 3 of us shared 4 dishes and were stuffed! Peking Duck Roll (5/5): I loveee spring rolls and haven't seen Peking duck in a vegan spot so this was new. I love the texture and flavor and crisp! Classic Banh Mi- House Special (5/5): we heard the banh mi is their signature dish, so we ordered the house special which comes with pork and pork belly. Sooo good and crispy Helen Special Fried Rice (4.5/5): we got it with the shaking beef, which was the highlight of the dish, and also included small pieces of ham. I thought the rice could've used for flavor though Helen Pancakes (4/5): reminds me of little mini banh xeo. Topped it with the meatball and it was good to eat fresh with lettuce when it's still crunchy We were seated immediately when we came for a Sunday lunch, and found parking in the small lot out back. Their fruit-infused water is also so yummy and they were great in refilling our cups lol. They also gave us complimentary desserts which was so sweet of them! I especially enjoyed the matcha pudding and creme brûlée. Everything is vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, organic and made in-house and shipped from their LA commercial kitchen daily, so it explains the higher price but you can absolutely taste the quality. The texture and flavor of the "meats" is truly incredible, I'm in awe. I will definitely come back!

Absolutely delicious! The sweetest customer service, I felt so taken care of The "pork belly" bahn mi was amazing and the vegan crème brûlée was the best I've ever had! Thank you for the kind hospitality, I will definitely be back!

I have to say that I wandered in not know that it was vegan at all and everything I ate here blew my mind! I have never had a more delicious spring roll in my entire life! Not to mention that the woman who waited on us was so kind and very knowledgeable of the menu. You could tell she is also a queen in the kitchen too! It's cute inside green but not much sitting room so you need to make sure to come early if it is a busy time! Honestly, to be real. I've been looking for somewhere with amazing food and with a menu this large I feel like I could come here forever and always be so pleasantly surprised!

Tofu Noodle Bowl

Wow! The food here was so fresh and amazing. I came here two days ago and already want to come eat here again. I was very surprised by the large menu but that does not take away anything from the food. My friends ordered two types of the noodle soups. both delicious. crispy lotus and fried tofu were delicious sides. My "vietnamese sausage" banh mi was very good as well. Desserts were delicious too. Loved how the nice server explained the background of this location and how it came to be as well as how they make and get all of their ingredients fresh. I loved the authentic decor and interior too. This was a great place to get vietnamese food from. If the "vegan" aspect of it makes you hesitate. Please don't! The food is so good. You have to give it a try. I can't wait to bring more friends here to try it out! There is a small parking in the back on the side street but apart from that there is paid parking on the side and if you don't mind walking a bit there is neighborhood parking too.

First of all, the water here is amazing! It's infused with lychee and a certain type of apple. It's delicious and free. Everything my friend and I ordered was great--banh mi, udon soup, lemongrass tofu. It was all very fresh and clean tasting. I really enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and they also gave us numerous desserts to try. Certainly recommend (for vegans and omnivores alike)! Update: I've been back several times, with my brother, friend, and parents. Every time I come here the staff is so welcoming, kind, and thoughtful. The food is prepared from scratch at a commercial kitchen in Los Angeles and shipped to San Diego multiple times per week. When I say they make the food from scratch--I'm talking the bread, the chili sauce, the soy sauce, the mock meats, the noodles, absolutely everything. This restaurant is an incredible labor of love, and the food is unbelievably good. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, or carnivore, this is hands-down one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego and even Southern California.

I came in here for some bao beo and I forgot that it's a vegan place. I went in there before but never got to order anything, but this time I wanted to give it a try. The lady at the cash register who was probably the owner was extremely nice. I ordered the bao beo and also bought a few of the small dessert cups to go with the bean sticky rice with coconut milk. Everything tasted good and you can't even really taste the difference. Although everything was more in the expensive side, the lady gave me a 10% discount and also a couple of the dessert cups for free. They make everything in house according to the info she gave me. They make the flour for the bao beo from basmati rice. The place is clean and the decor is simple and nice. Worth giving it a try. I found parking right in front of the store.

Flan & mango tapioca

Been wanting to try this place for a while now & finally got the chance to! We tried the steamed rice rolls, one of their soups, & a dry noodle dish. Everything was delicious. It's a surprise that everything is actually vegan! They make mock meat in house & it definitely tricks your mind into thinking that it's actual meat. They make everything in house! They even have a special water that's infused with different fruits & mint! It was amazing! We loved everything we tried! Our server was also super & gave us dessert to try, she had us try the flan & their mango tapioca. Both were amazing. Definitely a unique place you need to try. Just keep in mind that it is a little bit on the pricier side, every dish is around $25-30. But you are supporting a small business so they deserve it!

As a vegetarian/vegan Viet food enthusiast, I'm so glad I was introduced to Thanh Tinh Chay!! I usually judge vegetarian Viet food off of their bun bo hue, so that's exactly what I did this time around. After flipping through 50+ pages of their extensive menu, which is so amazing, I finally came across the soup selection. I was quite taken aback that a bowl of soup was $28. My bun bo hue was level 4 spicyness, and it definitely hit the spot. After finishing my bowl of soup, I had a chance to speak with one of the servers- which side note, both servers were so sweet and accommodating. She informed me that all the ingredients are prepared from scratch down to the noodles and tofu, which changed my perspective on the pricing of the dish. The servers were so amazing as they provided me and my friend free dessert! The flan was delicious, but we both enjoyed the corn pudding even more! We also were given a discount after the servers learned that my friend liked this spot so much that she brought me. Based on the tasty food and friendly service, Thanh Tinh Chay definitely deserves its 5 star rating!

Helen buns, fresh and filling!

I cannot say enough about this place! The free naturally sweetened water they serve is sweet but not too sweet. Everything e have tried here is delicious. I usually get the chicken and rice. My wife gets the house bahn mi. Ingredients are fresh, flavorful and vegan. The dessert is crème brûlée, complementary and delicious. It is just enough for one adult. I've noticed that the menu had expanded since coming here so there is an abundance of options here. Obviously the banh mi is delicious here if you want to slowly lean into this journey. Enjoy!

Fried rice- I selected the Peking "duck"

I just cannot give this place all the praise it deserves! The service is ALWAYS kind and efficient. The food is ALWAYS delicious. I have not had a miss yet. The atmosphere is calming and the bathroom is clean. This place is a must and my regular.

Thanh Tinh Chay is an absolute gem. I was astounded to learn about this place after years living in San Diego. Our server Trang was extremely helpful. She told us that the owner, Helen makes all the mock meats in her industrial kitchen in Los Angeles using gluten-free, organic, soy ingredients. The menu is unique and each entree is crafted with care. The flavor profile on the vegan shrimp was perfect. The texture was smooth on the inside with a light, crispy tempura coating. Everything was spot on. I am definitely adding Thanh Tinh Chay to my regular rotation. My sons who are somewhat picky eaters could not stop talking about how much they loved it!

Great service hehehe

Hello. What cooking oil does your restaurant use? Thank you.

Call the restaurant they are super friendly and the food is really good!

Is the menu gluten free and safe for people with celiac disease?

They have a ton of gluten free options !

Will you be closed the whole day on Thanksgiving 11/23? open the days before and after as usual?

We only closed on Wednesday the 11/22. Normal hour for 11/23 and 11/24.

Do you take reservations?

I called and they generally do not take reservations since there mostly is ample seating space at any time of day.

Are all of the menu items vegan or only some?

Everything is vegan

Is the house special sandwich the replacement for the bahn mi sandwich? If so,is it still the same size sandwich going for double the price?

The space is beautiful with that SoCal casual fancy (love it, hate stuffy dressed up fancy atmospheres). The staff were friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, definitely were helpful in making informative recommendations. The efforts put in are Michelin level. They notified us multiple times of the automatic 20% tip that's shared with all staff which I'm honestly fine with. We got the Pig Ears Salad (recommended by the bartender, the best, most surprising dish, 100%, will never find this anywhere else in the world), eggplants (they were still good and plentiful but not our favorite), and the dry aged duck ($$$$, the confit duck made me uncontrollably laughed and gnaw on the bones praying to extend the moment). I will always get the pig ear, and I was initially skeptical of the price of the duck but left feeling it was worth it. We left with leftovers and it's a good amount of food. The hostess had a note for our anniversary celebration. They also printed a little celebatory note directly on the menu - a great personal touch. Our server was friendly and answered any questions we had. We ordered the beef tartare, smoked aged duck, and the deep fried sand bass. For the drink we ordered the Seasame Soirée. While our food came out pretty slow, I'd say it was worth the wait. We also enjoyed 2 complimentary glasses of bubbly while we waited as part of our anniversary celebration. The restarant itself is decorated beautifully with a jazzy ambiance. The interior had bits of gold and green with a beautiful pearlescent leafy wallpaper. The bar is located in the center and also doubles as a centerpiece to the restuarant. Restrooms are located in the back - there we many private, clean and spacious rooms. Below is a summary of the food we ordered: Beef Tartare (5/5) - Savory, sweet and spicy beef tartare dressed in fish sauce and thai chilis. Paired alongside fresh herbs like cilantro, shiso, argula and radicchio. The sesame rice crackers were light and airy. Smoked Dry Aged Duck (5/5) - Perfectly cooked, sweet and salty aged smoked duck paired with rice noodles, herbs and 2 different sauces. I appreciated the many ways you can wrap and enjoy the duck. I do wish the slices of duck were either smaller or thinner - it's hard to eat in one bite. Whole Fried Sand Bass (4/5) - I'll always order a whole firied fish wherever I go and this was no expection. I loved the sweet & sour ginger sauce. The fish was a bit over-fried in my personal opinion, but the inside is still very soft and tender. Sweet & Sour Rice Noodles (5/5) - Aboslutely delicious! Slippery and cold rice noodles dressed in fish sauce and other seasonings. It's not overpowering at all and goes great with the Whole Fried fish as well. Seasame Soiree Cocktail (5/5) - A very unique drink made with gin, ginger, coconut, seasame seeds and more. It was very fragrant in the best way. The flavor really develops after the first sip. I love how nutty and decadent yet light this drink is. Overall, I had a great experience here and this is one of the top restaurants I've had the pleasure of enjoying in SD. Highly reccomend especially if you like Vietnamese food / fish-sauce forward dishes. (At least for the dishes I ordered)

The restaurant is small and fills in quick so you gotta get on a waitlist and pay attention hard when called.
