VEGAN SIGHTING!!! I don't even know where to start my fellow vegans. This quirky, Vietnamese restaurant in the city of Auburn, CA, has by far the best vegan Banh Mi sandwich. The tofu was prepared so it did not take up the whole sandwich. The pickled radish and carrots had the perfect and balanced of sour and sweet. Of course, can't leave out the herbs of cilantro and fresh jalapinjoes. The french bread was crispy outside but still soft and hearty as you take a bite. My earth was it a 2 thumbs up!!! Then their vegan pho with veggies and tofu did not disappoint. Their veggie broth was perfectly blended and made wonderfully that I was not even thinking this was vegan. Discovered this Vietnamese place while son was attending UCD years back. Was happy to see it come to Auburn CA over 6 years ago. It limped along thru covid, as many did but they seem they're back to full operation now. Mei, is top notch, knowledgeable, managing the place. I met up with my BEST FRIEND who had been waiting forever for a good rainy day so we could dine here! Apparently, everyone else had the same idea! What the heck is Pho? Pho is a popular Vietnamese noodle soup characterized by its flavorful broth, rice noodles, with various vegetables, sauces, other aff ins for added flavor and texture. The broth is typically made by simmering bones, herbs, and spices for an extended period, resulting in a rich and aromatic base. We were helped right away with perfect service! We started with the shrimp spring rolls and asked for an extra side of the peanut sauce (since I'm getting over a cold.) After the appetizer arrived, we put in our order for the 'King's Special.' The food is okay. The spouse wanted to try but he should have listened to me and went elsewhere. P3 Pho with rare steak and meatballs: The soup was not piping hot like I am use too. Maybe lukewarm. I could literally cradle the bowl with my hands vs having to hold from the rim. Not enough soup as well. Too much star anise in the broth. You can not miss the fragrance of the star anise which made the soup a little too spicy for my kids. S7 Curry beef noodle. Didn't care for the ramen noodle but the flavor was decent. It reminds me of KaPoon. The beef was soft and tender. C2 Rice plate and we chose grilled chicken and pork. The pork was a tad chewy for my kids. The did like the grilled chicken which is usually the opposite. Hint of lemongrass. The amount of rice is much smaller than other places that I have been too. Eggrolls: The kids gave it a two thumbs down. The reason is most likely the flavor was overpowered with black and white pepper. You could see the black pepper specks inside the egg roll. My son and daughters all said it's too spicy and I thought you were joking but I could taste the black/white pepper. Spring rolls: Wished they wrapped the rolls tighter. One bit and the rest of the roll seems to "fall" apart, the peanut sauce was good though. 18% added gratuity and the wait staff didn't even come to check on us. We were just a party of 5. My husband wanted to try this place as the reviews were good. And it was our first time here, but we will not come back again. 1. The noodles were served in dirty and broken bowls 2. The water glass rim is nasty. There is no way I would drink the water without a straw. Yet, we have to ask for a straw. 3. They charged me $1 for hot water without telling me that there would be a fee. 4. When I asked if they could cook the bean sprouts since I don't like the taste of raw bean sprouts and usually the broth is not hot enough to cook it through, the server said "no, we don't do that". The place feels very homey and I believe all the employees are family (at least they act like it). I go here once every couple weeks. CASH ONLY! But they have an ATM. They have one of the BEST Banh Mi sandwiches around. Very authentic. Ken recommended once to get a side of broth to dip it in (kind of like a Vietnamese French Dip). Sooo good! Good food. Ok service. We were there at about 7pm and they stop serving at 8. Three folks came in at 7:50 and they were turned away. They then proceeded to prop the door open on a rainy cold night and freeze us out. They also dropped the bill before clearing any dishes and rolled over the dirty dishes cart and loaded our dishes into that. They were standing behind the counter staring at us and the one other party. I highly recommend you don't go anytime around closing. They will make you feel very unwelcome. That or just get take out. Nice stop on our way from South Lake Tahoe to SMF. I got the small rare steak and added an extra rib bone. I didnt realize it alreafy came with a rib bone. He ordered the King's pho minus the tendon plus an added rib bone. We also got 4 egg rolls. The rib meat was very tender and a good size. The broth was decent the noodles were clumped togwther at the bottom pretty solid. The chili oil was very tasty and the eggrolls were delicious. We're traveling home from some time up in the mountains and needed to make a pit stop. This place seemed to fit the bill since we could order spring rolls and bahn mi, portable feasts. I also consider both to main indicators of quality for Vietnamese restaurants. Well I'm happy to report we were not disappointed. The grilled chicken bun me was packed with tasty grilled chicken, shredded vegetables, a hint of spice and cilantro. The fresh spring rolls were in a delicate rice paper wrap with cellophane noodles, shrimp, mint and sprouts inside. It came with peanut sauce and together they were excellent. Next time we're through that way heading up or home, we've got this place. The service today at this restaurant was a bit disappointing. I've been in a couple times before when it wasn't busy and had a decent experience. Today, I walked in pregnant and holding hands with my 3yr old son and waited to be greeted and seated. It was busier than normal. As I was waiting, two firemen walked in behind me. The man working the counter immediately greeted them and proceeded to try and seat them before me. When I spoke up and said, "I've been waiting" the two firemen left and I stood their still waiting while the man working the register walked to the kitchen in the back and walked out with food to serve and completely ignored me. As I waited, a businessman walked in and asked if I was waiting for a table. I said "Yes" and not too shortly after he walked in, he was greeted and seated immediately. The cowardly businessman said nothing to the worker to indicate I had been waiting before him. Lastly, a woman and her daughter walked in and waited behind me. Finally, the host walked over and acknowledged my presence, but proceeded to ask the woman behind me how many she had in her party (6) and then asked me (2). To my surprise, he was contemplating who to seat first and just as I realized he was going to seat the other woman before me I said "No, we're going to sit at a table since we've been waiting here for a while". The unfortunate and very obvious circumstances that I could not ignore is that everyone that walked in after me and was greeted, was Caucasian and I am not. My boyfriend and I went to visit Pho King Good because we were camping nearby and I was craving asian food. Being Vietnamese, I was a little reluctant to try this spot because of the gimmicky name and of the area. However, when we walked in, the aroma of pho was lingering in the air and it smelled so comforting and delicious! We were greeted by the nice waiter/waitress and was seated right away. We ordered the Banh Mi Fries and a large bowl of pho with rare steak and meatballs. The Banh Mi fries came out first and OMG! These fries were fireeeee. I thought the fries had all of the components of a banh mi and all the flavors worked so well together. I was thinking maybe it should've had a Vietnamese mayo or some sort on the fries, but their sauce they had on the fries was actually really good and fishy. The pho was also pretty good too! I'm picky with my pho because I live in a city with predominantly Vietnamese people and I feel like I'm pretty spoiled with Vietnamese food. This is our regular stop when we drive back from snowboarding in Tahoe-- it's some very solid pho. I wish that there was a longer list of options for pho- I don't like meatballs, so I'm stuck with the raw steak pho every time. Not bad, just not as diverse as I would like. The pho broth leans on the cinnamon side, can feel a little heavy for me but it's very yummy. The spring rolls with shrimp are THE BEST, the ingredients are so fresh! The only place that even comes close is 6 hours south. I get the vermicelli special every time, with Banh Mi Fries (they're a bit addicting), and their vietnamese espresso is also great.
