Pho King is a hole-in-the-wall single room restaurant located in a strip mall which blends into the Fort Smith cityscape. I never would've thought to give it a try, but I was visiting friends who know the area well and they suggested it for lunch, in part because they love to pronouncing Pho King very fast, as if one word. (We are immature.) What Pho King lacks in ambiance is made up for in FLAVOR! My chicken vermicelli bowl was the kinda dish I could grub on everyday. The servings are ample, and it's a good thing because I could eat my weight in the seared meat, pickled veggies, and well-dressed rice noodles. While the environment leaves much to be desired, I found myself not caring one bit as I slurped up my noodles and discussed fish sauce with my friends. Give Pho King a try! How do you know when a place has good food? No matter what your answer, you will enjoy Pho King. I had the Korean BBQ ribs and shrimp wrapped in pork skins. The ribs were tender and tasty. The pork skinned wrapped shrimp was crispy, not at all too salty, and delicious. The carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes were high quality and fresh. Service was quick and polite. They also give you everything you need for takeout soup. Perfect pho soup spoon was exciting plus sauces and all the veggies and utensils you'd need. The owner works very hard at running this restaurant, and her attention to her food and menu shows it. We went in on a cold and wet day to get some pho in order to warm up, and were sat down immediately. Shortly thereafter, water with lemon wedges came along with their menus. The owner herself was working the front as both a hostess and a waitress! The food was excellent. We had their shrimp spring rolls first. Their rice paper wrap was not ripped at all. Their shrimp tasted fresh, with abundant herbs and bean sprouts to add additional layers of flavor. Their dipping sauce struck the right balance between sweet, sour, and hotness. Then came the pho. It was hot, salty, and full of bold flavors. In other words, just the way we like it. The owner also gave us plenty of basil, sliced jalapenos, bean sprouts, and other herbs, to go along with our pho. Finally, after the meal, we asked the owner where we can go to get Asian groceries (since it was our first time in Ft. Smith), she provided very detailed information for us. In the mood for "Chinese food," we followed Yelp reviews and wound up at Pho King. Food: we had spring rolls (2 chicken and 2 shrimp) for appetizers. They were light and mildly flavored, served with a flavorful thick peanut sauce. We each had Pad Thai for our entrees, mine chicken, his shrimp. Tasty, noodles firm, crisp sprouts. I liked the shrimp best, as they were seasoned and grilled. Huge glass of sweet iced tea, only $1. Total came to $15. Ambiance: I'm confused about the "dumpy" comments in the reviews. Look, it's a Vietnamese restaurant in a tiny strip mall. Maybe that colors my expectations. It was plain- white walls without decoration, black and white tile on the floor ( scuffed but clean), black tables, black chairs and booths, all in good repair. Bathroom scuffed but clean. Dumpy? No, not at all. What were the other reviewers expecting when the lunch entrees are less than 7 bucks each? Service: again, I read the reviews before we got there, where I learned that the staff were surly. There was only one server, so I'd call her preoccupied not unfriendly. Every time I said, Thank you, she said, You're welcome. We did get her to smile at the end, but I noticed that she never once made eye contact. Cultural difference? Service was fast and she checked on us twice. There was an elderly man cleaning tables. I'm going to call him Tired. Also, I like the variety of condiments and herbs offered, especially Thai basil and plenty of limes. I like my soups on the spicy/sour side. Besides pho and egg noodle soup, I've had the crab wontons as an appetizer. Not my favorite, but pretty good. Husband had rice and stir fried vegetables with chicken before. He liked it. I find myself wanting to try other items, but can't pick anything other than pho or egg noodle soup. Service could be improved. I'm accustomed to saying, "Thank you," then receiving "You're welcome" or "No problem" as a response. Instead, I'm often met with a nod or a "Uh huh." However, service is very quick.
