First time to this restaurant, wanted to try the food out especially since there were some good comments. We entered and were greeted from a distance by a waitperson to sit wherever we wanted. They soon brought menus, silverware and took our drink order and later returned to take our food order. We had two different waiters bring our drinks, condiments and food. We had 3 different sauce cups brought to us; we asked what they were for, the waiter told us but we had a hard time understanding him. The food was good, my husband liked the chicken and noodles pho and I got something similar to a bun with shrimp and stir fried vegetables with very little and subtle flavor. I was told one of the sauce cups was to be poured into the dish. The vegetable rolls were hardly filled and somewhat greasy. The restaurant was lightly decorated with an Asian flare and music in the background; I would recommend it to be turned down just a tad. Oh, wow. Has it really been three months since I last churned out a five-star review? Pho Houston in the heart of McAllen really broke me out of my funk. My family and I dropped by here during our Thanksgiving weekend excursion to the Rio Grande Valley, and yes, the name had a lot to do with it. As it turned out, the owner(s) moved south from Houston. I've had my fill of Chinese and Japanese cuisine near the border, but it was my first time having Vietnamese far away from home. The beef noodle pho I had on what was a wet, dreary afternoon did its job of keeping my stomach satisfied for the rest of the day. I loved how flavorful and aromatic it was. Everything from the beef chunks to the noodles were fresh. The egg rolls I had beforehand were an excellent way to start lunch. Pho broth is really nice. It's not too sweet like other Pho restaurants. The original Pho flavor should not be sweet. The portion is pretty small. The Pho noodle is ok, it's not well done. Meat and topping are decent. Vermicelli and fish sauce are decent but nothing to blow me away. They don't honor the check-in on Yelp, but it's a mom-and-pop shop. Place came highly recommended and so we stopped by for dinner. We were greeted and seated immediately. It's a cute Mom & Pop stop. I was also reassured as there were other Asians dining there! Noodles were more al dente than I preferred. The beef was generous with the flank steak and meatballs. The broth was good, but I've had better. Maybe it was late and the broth got watered down, but it lacked depth and the flavors weren't balanced. I tried my hubby's pho, which uses a different broth. I believe it was chicken based, but it was lighter and smoother. It was more delicate and rich. I would've preferred that one and would have probably enjoyed it more. I had the #8 so I could taste all of them (combination of flank steak, tendon, and meatball) and they were all delicious! We also ordered the veggie spring rolls which were great in size and texture. Definitely will need to add the sauce. The veggie egg roll were awesome. And you must get the shrimp dim sum if you love shrimp. These 4 little things were jammed packed with flavor! Everything thing from the relaxing Jasmin tea, the spring rolls, egg rolls and beef noodle soup with tendons, yes, tendons, was delicious. The two different sauces, one spicy peanut sauce for spring rolls and one sweet for the eggs rolls and these rolls added another texture to our meal. I added a chili paste to my beef noodle soup, and a friendly man was passing by our table and conversed with us telling us, "Asians liked their meals spicy, too." He was smiling when he shared his food tastes with us. I found it interesting because he noticed that I had a lot of the chili paste in my beef noodle soup. lol I noticed that at another table, people had eaten crawfish, and the owner told us that another family of regulars was coming in for dinner. This he shared with us when we asked about all the place settings with plates, upside down bowls and small platters of oil and sliced, green chilies. The staff is friendly as well as the local, Asian customers. We felt very welcome and had another serving of the Jasmin tea while we relaxed after our meal and chatted. I felt like we were in another country. I know that I will be returning here often as the food is not only delicious but healthy, and the atmosphere is welcoming and very relaxing- a wonderful experience! The beef noddle soup was decent, but I will not be going back. The service was horrible..... This is the type of restaurant that in my family we call 'pinche'. On their menu is has a picture of the noddle soup with a side plate of all the veggies to throw in your soup. (Like every other pho place). We ordered 3 entres all which had the same picture of the veggie plate on the side of each. We got our food and only received one small plate. I didn't think it was a big deal so I asked the lady whom I assume was the owner and she acted like she couldn't understand me and just told me okok and left (keep in mind we had already spoken before this encounter). I didn't even care about the veggie plate at that point, it was the fact that she totally dismissed me and completely ignored my table after that simple request. & I know she didn't forget because I kept looking at her like if I was waiting... and there was hardly any other people there.
