I'm not sure about the food but the customer service was horrible. The worst I've ever come across!!!! The server had an attitude from the beginning when I asked her about noodles and I told her that it was my first time in this restaurant. She just flipped the menu over and pointed to the noodles. She said it will be about 20 minutes after I placed our order for 3 different plates. The restaurant was filled with people waiting for their food. We sat down and waited and watched everyone leave. It had been about 30 minutes and she came out to wipe the tables. I asked her if my order was almost ready, and she answered with "I don't know I am out here wiping the tables" when all she could have said was I will check on your order! That angered my husband and he got to telling her if she could go check on the effing order. I tried to de-escalate the situation by me telling her that all she had to say is "I will check on your order " she went in and started arguing with my husband who was upset at her attitude towards me and about the situation. It wasn't our first time at a restaurant, but it was the first time experiencing this kind of behavior from a server. I'm not sure who trained her at being cordial to customers, but she needs some training. I cancelled my order and left. By the way, I was trying the restaurant because it was recommended by someone else. We were here visiting from Hawaii. read more

Mediocre food with amazingly horrendous customer service. Went for takeout and got sweet and sour chicken with wonton soup. Got home and found that the top of wonton soup container has melted and spilled everywhere. Called Papa Lee and spoke with the gentleman that was the cashier when I picked up the food. Told him the situation and his solution was for me to drive back asap to get another soup. When I told him I was 20 minutes away and it was now rush hour, his response was, the replacement soup offer was only valid for this moment in time. When I asked for a partial refund, he told me ...... absolutely nothing. After a minute of mouth breathing, he utter in an arrogant and dismissive tone, nothin I can do about it. This place is great for a quick Chinese Food fix. I usually call it in and by the time I get to the counter it's ready for me. I'm a creature of habit so I always get one of my two favorite dishes. The Sesame Chicken is made with white meat. It's super flavorful and always cut into nice pieces. I usually get it with less sauce so my chicken doesn't get soggy. The place is small; 4 Four person tables and a long Family table in the middle. Not all of staff are super friendly all the time but there there is one young lady that is always really friendly and helpful where I go for lunch. read more

I was craving Chinese food and the options in the Greater McAllen area are limited (relative to metropolitans I'm used to living in) and this place worked out surprisingly well. Clean, laid-back vibes with hip hop music playing, Bruce Lee imagery on the walls. Portions were large. I'll be back to try other dishes. I tried the following items: 1. Spicy Bean Curd ($9.95) = mapu tofu: a lightly spicy dish of soft tofu cooked with minced pork. Comes with white or fried rice. 2. Fish in Black Bean Sauce ($8.95): comes with white or fried rice, egg roll, and a soup. Fish was cooked just right and there were several large pieces in the order. Surprisingly great (despite the meh egg drop soup and "fried rice") 3. Egg Drop Soup: really basic version, just soup and egg no veggies/nothing else, didn't dislike it- just very meh. A small soup comes included with my entree and I chose this. 4. Hot & Sour Soup ($2.50 for small size): good, standard hot&sour soup, I'd order this again. 5. "Fried Rice": not fried rice the dish at all haha, it's just rice stir fried with some soy sauce. No veggies/eggs/nothing. Just know it's flavored rice when you get it as your option for entrees. After reading the review that this restaurant plays hip-hop in the dining area, I had to see what it was all about. It was true, they did have some hip-hop playing in the background, however, we're not talking 36 Chambers nor are we talking Kidz Bop. It was more of a trip hop playing in the background. Classy not grimy....if there's such a thing. There were a fair amount of people in the restaurant when I showed up. This is a pay before you eat type of joint. I was greeted quickly, and advise of their top sellers. I ended up ordering General Tao chicken and lo mein. The general chow chicken was on point, the lo mein, needs a little help. The dish also included soup in a egg roll. The soup was on point, I could've done without the egg roll. Overall, I was impressed by the decor, Background music, service and quality of food. Unfortunately, during these times they are only offering to go orders only, so our food gets cold by the time we get home. Their orange chicken is good. Awful! The chicken was soooo dry. The sauce was so bland I couldn't even taste anything. I've had this dish on the Mission site and it doesn't compare. I was expecting the same. I got a very salty wonton soup with two wontons with no meat in them. I ordered a lo mein chicken which the cashier said same price 12.95 for either veggies, chicken, shrimp etc. I chose chicken but it was just as bad in my meal. I came home and seasoned it with my own ginger, garlic, onion, salt and pepper to make it edible and not throw it away. Finally I wanted sweet and sour sauce for my egg rolls. They charged me $.70 for a small container. They did give my free chili oil but I'll never go back again for dried out chicken with no flavor meal. Portion was small box. Rice is flavorless as well. Never again. I'll drive an extra 10 miles to Mission. Or I'll go to Yarba Express across from them next time! read more

So today I decided to try a new restaurant that came highly recommended by a good friend who regularly dines here on weekly basis. As I entered the restaurant the food smelled delicious it was was a nice small seating area that looked very pleasant and was excited to try for myself. I placed my order which consisted of 4 entree meals and an appetizer, which totaled to $56 and some change. When trying to pay for my order I was using a $50 Visa gift card and paying the difference with my debit card. The employee tried the Visa gift card first for $50 (so she said) but stated it declined which I found odd. The employee mention that someone else tried to pay with a gift card earlier and it denied. I went on my website immediately to check if the balance on my Visa gift card was $50, I confirmed it was and showed the employee who made a face like I was lying. I asked her to try again which she did and again it declined. I advised that it may be her system since money was showing on the card and the previous customer having the same issue. The employee again made a face like I was lying and didn't bother to ask for assistance as to why it declined and possibly resolve the issue. So I just said thank you and that we would eat somewhere else. Based on this experience I will not spend my time or money at this place due to this 1st experience even is the food is to die for. I use to come frequently but I stopped because every time I make a phone call to place my order I never get an answer. I wish I was exaggerating this but there were times I would have to call up to 3 - 4 times before I could get a response. Found this place by accident. Our usual spot was closed and we wanted Chinese. Did a quick search and viola! Papa Lee's is out of this world. The only thing comparable is the places that have literal China towns, like LA, Chicago and New York. From beginning to end fantastic! Hot and Sour soup....amazing! Crab Rangoon stuffed FULL and fried to perfection. General Tso sticky, spicy perfection with large pieces of juicy moist chicken. The restaurant is small but VERY clean. The counter service is courteous and friendly. A great little hidden gem in South Texas! One piece of advice is to order ahead of time and pick up there is not a great deal of waiting space. read more

My husband and I came in mostly 'cause we were at a loss about where to eat; we did a "nearby" search on Yelp, and Papa Lee popped up! First impression: it's a pretty hip place with an industrial feel...Edison bulbs on the light fixtures, etc., hip hop playing on the speakers...You order at the counter, and the food comes in take-out plates; once we opened 'em up, we saw that it's a pretty practical thing to do: the portions are huuuuge. We ordered the pork with vegetables which I didn't like too much, but my hubs ate the whole thing, so he must have been pretty satisfied with it. I had the curry chicken which I thought lacked a tiny bit in saltiness; it was also pretty mild. The egg rolls, crab puffs, and soups were very good. The broth in the wonton soup was particularly delicious. For two plates, two drinks, and an order of crab puffs, we paid around $30 for lunch, so it's not exactly cheap. read more

Probably the best Orange Chicken I've ever had. Our family tried several different menu items and they were all very good. The restaurant is primarily for carry out and everything is served in to go boxes. However, they have a nice seating area to sit and eat. We also really liked their egg rolls. The service was really great. If you are looking to carry out some good food or even if you want to eat here you will do well at Papa Lee. The only down side is that they don't have good soy sauce, just the crappy carry-out brand. I will need to bring my own if I want to eat here or bring it home where I have good soy sauce. read more
