During a recent visit, I found a hair in my food and politely asked the waitress to speak with a manager. Instead of addressing it professionally, she asked if I spoke Spanish, then proceeded to speak in Spanish suggesting it was likely my friend's hair--right in front of us. The tables were dirty to begin with. We came in and it took more than 15 minutes for someone to ask what we wanted to drink and for someone to clean our table. No one ever came back to our table to ask for refill on drinks or to pick up our plates. We had to get up to go ask at the bar for a refill. I had a bad experience this was my first time here. The place closes at 10pm and I came in at 8:42pm for carry out. So I paid for a combo 2 meal which is 12 piece sushi rolls and rice. I gave my ticket to a person to pick the rolls of my choice but they only had 4 selects of the many they have. But I told them I didn't want the ones only available that I would wait for them to make more. After 5 minutes of me waiting the staff come up to me and said are you ready sir. I told her no it's still the same selections that I don't want mind you they have about 22 selections to choose from. Then they said they are not making anymore so I was force to select from what they had out. I didn't ask for my money back since I was so hungry from my 12 hour shift. I would gave it 0 stars but it won't let me. If you do go to eat go at least 3 hours before they close since they would not cater to you since they are lazy. My hubby, daughter and I ate lunch here today. While the sushi was ok, some of the other foods were just ok. The green bean tempura was all stuck together, so difficult to serve. Some items were not warm as they should have been. The desserts we're fairly pathetic. Some of the entrees were ok. The hot and sour soup was alright. The waitress was nice and kept our table cleared and drinks refilled. My hubby and I both had headaches after eating there, and his stomach was slightly upset. What's the stigma when you first hear "sushi buffet"? The sushi must not be good, the raw fish is not that fresh right? Well, I wouldn't say this place has great sushi, because they don't. However, for $10/lunch buffet, it's pretty damn good. The key when you go to a sushi buffet is, not everything is good. Keep that in mind. They have a good selection of about 15-20 different sushi to choose from. The best way to do it? Get 2 of each, then put aside the pieces that you really like, take pics, so next time u know which ones to stick to and don't over eat lol. Besides the sushi, they also have a few good selections for chinese food. The chicken teriyaki is on point. The miso soup is a hit and miss. It has been super salty and not as hot once or twice, but for the most part it has been decent. Don't even think about the dessert. You'd be super disappointed. The only decent thing they have for dessert is ice cream, n only in 2 favors, vanilla and napoleon. I would have given this place 3 stars, however, I like their unique decorations, and the 10% military discount have earned them an extra star. read more

This is an excellent sushi buffet. They have a vast variety of sushi rolls. I've tried almost all of them and the ones I tastes were delish. They have these fried jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese that are bundles of joy. Today I also served myself their sweet and sour soup which is very flavorful. They have a few "Asian" style dishes like broccoli beef, jalapeño chicken, egg rolls, etc. Buffet price during lunch is 9.99, can't beat that price. read more

While they do have a large selection of rolls for when you have a sushi craving, it seems that "Kurai" means "cream cheese" in Japanese. Of the 16-20 rolls on the buffet, 3-5 of them didn't have either a glob of cream cheese inside of them or a thick layer smothered on top to hold the toppings in place. After a few bites, it leaves a heavy coating in your mouth. There is also a limited selection of the types of seafood in the rolls, most everything has either imitation crab or salmon. The dinner was only $12.99 so it's not a huge loss but sushi isn't something you want to go bargain pricing on. I feel there are more authentic and quality choices for sushi around McAllen. read more

Nice interior and staff but the food is really below average. Best to pass on the Chinese food and fried sushi rolls as they're more heavy on grease and sauce than actual flavor. Some of the sushi was OK and tasted fresh and cold, but the rest felt like it had been sitting out for a while and was really warm and mushy which isn't something you want when eating fish. The mango and strawberry desert sushi was especially weird, and I would recommend avoiding it. I'm not sure the quality of sushi in McAllen since I don't live here, but I'd look for something else if you want to eat something that tastes fresh. read more

Kurai has some of the best wait staff I have ever seen. They are fast and unbelievably friendly. The manager himself sat us at a nice booth and returned to clear our plates. Our drinks were never empty which was surprising given that it was a lunch time rush. The decor is beautiful and refreshing. It's a fun and inviting atmosphere. Kurai serves Chinese food and sushi. The food is made in small batches so it stays fresh and tastes great. General Tsao is my favorite. The sushi isn't top notch but it's pretty darn close. I couldn't complain as I ate two platefuls of it! They have very creative sushi chefs and I greatly appreciated their spicy cilantro roll. I can't wait to go back for more. read more
