I've heard mixers reviews about this place. I myself was not impressed. Scale of 1-10, I give it a 4.

Sadly, the valley still cannot compete with other, bigger cities when it comes to authentic, fresh Asian noodles/broth. We were excited to try Katsayu given the amazing reviews but it completely missed the mark for us. That tends to happen when you have had amazing similar dishes elsewhere. The place was nice and cozy. The server was there by herself, which wasn't a problem as there were only two other parties. The problem is that this poor girl had no idea what the dishes were or the ingredients. When you start off by saying "the packet of seasonings we use..." it doesn't bode well. We ordered the spicy ramen which is their most popular dish, a rice bowl, a Katsu pork dish, and a seafood soup. The seafood soup had a terible funky taste that I'm not sure wasn't bad mussels. Given the terrifying stories of what happens when you have bad seafood we decided not to take the risk of eating it. We told our server we didn't like the taste of the soup and she said "that's sad" and then proceeded to tell us to her manager said we still had to pay for it even though we hadn't liked it. I have mixed feelings about this, as I understand it's been served already so it basically has to get trashed either way, so take that part of the review as you choose. They did say they would "comp" us a meal the next time...but I don't think that will be happening! The ramen tasted like a package ramen, the Katsu was decent but we didn't even get it with the side of rice it's supposed to come with because they were "out of rice"! What?! That's right, an Asian restaurant that is out of rice. The rice bowl was also average as were the dumplings and edamame we all shared. They were the best part of the meal which says a lot! Came to the restaurant during a past business trip. Based on the reviews I figured that the ramen would be decent. When I arrived there was only one other customer being served so I thought the service would be good. The person that was tending to the customers was also the cashier and cook it seems during that visit. So I decided to cut the guy some slack. When he took my order I decided to order the spicy ramen as that seem to be the popular dish of choice at the restaurant. Once the spicy ramen came out, that is when the food review begins. The ramen looks like it was a store bought ramen packaged with some ground meat, an mussel then a poached egg along with some vegetables. I was disappointed as I thought I would be getting fresh noodles or at least something that wasn't like a bag of ramen that I could cook up myself. The mussel was over cooked. The broth was spicy but that was how I imagined it. Halfway through my meal was when water was finally offered to me. Usually that is the first thing that is asked. Arrived right at start of dinner service mid week. Place is located in a small strip mall. It has cute decor. Kind of small. No outside dinning area. Definitely take orders for pick up as the phone rang several times while I was there. I came to taste the ramen. Kind of limited menu. I believe 4 to 5 choices of ramen. All pork broth. I ordered the spicy ramen and an appetizer. No add ons available on the menu. With that being said, the ramen I got had enough in it to be more than a hearty meal. I noodles were cooked just right. The broth was definitely spicy. The muscle was new for me in my ramen but tasted good. The egg was slightly over cooked but tasty and the veggies were fresh. The only thing it needed was either for the kimchi to he a little more potent or some vinegar element to cut through the fattiness of the pork and really bring out all the flavors in broth. It was affordable and satisfying as far as ramen goes. Definitely would have liked the option to add nori or some more vegetables and some acid element to really taste the depth of the broth. Heard a lot about this place so thought I'd give it a try. Restaurant is small and minimal. 7 tables spaced apart. Menu is limited which is not a bad thing is the food is good. I ordered the shrimp tempura appitizer, the Rosu-Katsu which is just another word for pork tonkatsu. The meal came with a bowl of Miso Soup, rice and some Japanese and American pickles. To start... The shrimp Tempura was not very good. Tempura is supposed to be light and crispy, This batter was rather heavy and not crunchy at all. Wouldn't really call it a fried shrimp either since there were no breading. The best tempura batters normally use a finer flour and club soda to give it that nice texture. The katsu was good but nothing special. The texture of the rice was excellent. But the serving was so small. It could fit in the palm of my hand so an order of extra rice was necessary. The Japanese pickles were a nice touch but I'm not sure where the American pickles fit in. The katsu sauce was different from most but was very good. It was served cold and looked almost like a peanut sauce. The other standout was the Miso soup. Hands down the best Miso I've had in a long time. I think the Miso soup really sets the tone in a Japanese restaurant. This was excellent with a generous amount of Tofu and Wakame seaweed. My only complaint was it was served after the shrimp and very close to the main course. Miso should be the first thing thats served in a Japanese meal... Overall, it was a tasty meal. I would rank it behind Yasuke restaurant and on par with Toyoko sushi restaurant. read more

This is a pretty decent place. We tried two kinds of ramen and a katsu. The presentation was very nice and the service was good. The curry ramen was delicious and not too hot, while still having a kick. The katsu was very good as well. There were a couple small details to criticize, first I didn't love the tonkatsu sauce because it seemed ketchupy to me. Secondly, they do not give enough rice with the katsu. Then they put fish flakes in top of the rice which ruined half the rice. Next time I will ask for them not to add that. It was weird to me that they used American style sweet pickles along with Japanese style pickles. But I really am nitpicking. Good place and I will come back. read more

The most authentic Japanese restaurant in McAllen. It's minimalist to the core, from the decorations to the menu. It's great to see a Japanese restaurant that doesn't serve a Mexicanized version of their food, but rather forces you to be open minded and indulge in authentic Japanese delicacies. Everything I ordered was delicious. The shrimp tempera was so lite and fresh I wanted more. The accompanying sauces were delightful and complimented the shrimp so well. As for the steamed shrimp dumplings, I wish I could give a better description but they were so good I breathed them in. Buddy's told me about this place. I hadn't had any experience with Korean food and man was I missing out! Everything that the owner/chef makes is delicious. I've tried every single appetizer and loved them all. The chicken and pork Katsu are both great. All of the ramens are delicious, my favorite is the spicy ramen. The curry don, and katsu don are both great if you want a little more food. All of his Thursday specials are worth it. The Korean fried chicken has to be my favorite, the sweet mixed with peanuts is amazing. There's only one problem with this restaurant. It will ruin Korean food for you, especially ramen. I've since tried plenty of Korean restaurants, including high end in big cities like Toronto and Austin, and nothing compare to Hans Katsuya. You can get 5 star restaurant quality right here in Mission. Do yourself a favor and eat here. It's all you're ever gonna want! read more

I read about it on yelp and decided to try it out. We called to save a table but it was pretty empty for a Wednesday night at 8pm. The waiter was very attentive and nice. The shumai was delicious; sadly, it was only like 5 steamed dumplings, but flavorful in each bite. My boyfriend got the spicy champon ramen. He loved it because it is spicy, had seafood and an egg, and obviously because it's ramen. I also tried it and if you like spicy, it's a good selection. It's not super spicy where you won't enjoy or taste the other ingredients within the dish. We got the Chicken Katsu to share. The chicken was lightly breaded and tasted so good. It came with steamed white rice and cabbage salad that had an orange sauce dressing. The sauce for the dipping the chicken was good as well. I got the Katsu-Don which was lightly breaded pork over rice with egg and onions. As soon as it arrived to the table and I got a whiff of it, my mouth watered. It was so good I didn't want to share with my boyfriend. To drink, we got ramune (Japanese soda). It's so much fun opening them as it has a plastic top which you remove and then push out part of the lid to get the round bottle opener which you will use to push into the soda top to open. We got the melon and strawberry; both are yummy but I liked the strawberry more. The owner, Han, who is also the cook came to greet us and share with us about the restaurant. We totally recommend it and we will be going again. We hear they will have Korean fried chicken soon which is amazing and I have only had up in north Texas. I can't wait because it amazingly delicious and totally something the valley is missing out on! read more

Great place for Japanese food. No sushi here, but that's not a bad thing. The place is small and would look a bit more cozy if they converted some of the tables into booths along the wall. Also thought it was interesting that they offered Korean fried chicken (call ahead); not many places in the RGV do that so I'll have to check it out sometime.
