Kurai has some of the best wait staff I have ever seen. They are fast and unbelievably friendly. The manager himself sat us at a nice booth and returned to clear our plates. Our drinks were never empty which was surprising given that it was a lunch time rush. The decor is beautiful and refreshing. It's a fun and inviting atmosphere. Kurai serves Chinese food and sushi. The food is made in small batches so it stays fresh and tastes great. General Tsao is my favorite. The sushi isn't top notch but it's pretty darn close. I couldn't complain as I ate two platefuls of it! They have very creative sushi chefs and I greatly appreciated their spicy cilantro roll. I can't wait to go back for more. read more

Food was good but they clean with Fabuloso which is a home cleaner. It has such a pungent smell that it permeates everything. Even the food starts tasting like the cleaner. The tables are cleaned with Windex so you get a blast of windex smell while you are trying to block the Fabuloso smell. This place is pretty good, I come here often when I'm craving sushi. Prices are pretty good considering it's an all you can eat buffet, and they are made in small batches as needed at buffet line. You'll probably spend what you would spend on one sushi roll elsewhere and eat to fill. I'm usually still hungry after eating a roll at Kumori and have to spend like $30 to satisfy, so this place is much better. I also like that they have other items besides Sushi such as salads, soup, stir fry, noodles, etc. Service is great, waiters are great. They also offer free ice cream! Terrible sushi... The Japanese cuisine is allot more broad than the bad "sushi" wraps available here. Variations of the sushi available are weird concoctions of Cheetos, fruit and candy crap. The food is great and the sushi buffet is definitely a bonus. Unfortunately, the service is very poor. When we arrived we were sat but we never got served I had to get up and find a waitress and ask her if we could get some drinks and utensils. We also never received a check so I had to again describe to the cashier where we sat before I could pay. After paying I didn't receive a receipt I had ask for one which I thought was odd. The rolls or sushi are plentiful but honestly 90% of them have freakin' cream cheese in them. I don't mind some cream cheese once in awhile but this was out of control. When I asked if they would make the exact same roll that was already on the buffet but without cream cheese was told that it'd be considered a la carte and charged extra. At least cut down the cream cheese ones to half the selection instead of the 3-4 out of 20 you have now. Although you don't really go for the Chinese food it is pretty good actually. For the money and considering the alternatives in McAllen, we were very happy with our dinner here. Service was excellent too. There was a wide variety of sushi to choose from, though if you don't like cream cheese you will feel limited in options. My wife and I felt the Chinese food was inferior to the sushi, so only ate sushi and enjoyed it. Our only two problems (cucumber being used extremely bitter, and coke was watered down) during dinner were quickly addressed by our waiters, and they were happy to do so. We will definitely be returning, and I recommend any sushi fans to give this place a try. read more

I type this with a fully belly and a smile on my face after my most recent trip to Kurai. In both instances (mid week dinners) the place was clean and the staff attentive. As others have noted, this is not a high end big city sushi bar and most of the rolls have a cream cheese component, but that does mean they do not taste good. And that does not account for the chineese style steam table foods which are hot and fresh. And after dinner, just ask for a bowl of ice cream, and I mean ice cream, not soft serve. Chinese food here is not worth trying at all. I would rather just eat steamed rice than try their chinese food again. Sushi is ok, but like the other reviewer said, almost every sushi roll has cream cheese in it. I only go here whenever I'm craving sushi a lot and don't want to fork up a lot of money at a nice sushi restaurant. The manager had came to our table to ask how everything was, the conversation ended with her saying that she had to change the ingredients used to satisfy the locals. Ok, I get your business has to make money but when you start taking away ingredients to a recipe then you have not made what you claim your business makes. This was my first time going to Kurai after recommendations from my students to try it. It is an all you can eat buffet for 12.99 dinner with a large selection of sushi and small selection of dishes. I enjoyed all the sushi I tried, preferring anything with shrimp or crab. The sushi were fresh, and I enjoyed the selection I ate. Although the food had less selection than one of the large China buffets, it was also tasty. I had the orange, teriyaki, and general tso chicken, fried rice, and lo mein. Also had the hot and sour soup which was made the way it should be without a beef flavor base or meat in it. Everyone was friendly, we had great service, and they worked hard at keeping the buffet and sauce area clean. Food could have been warmer, sushi was at room temp like most buffets, and I would go back again. Three stars for need of warmer food and more food selection, but everything taste good. read more
