We Love Xin Xin in McAllen, Texas. The flavors are great! No other restaurant compares to them! Even in the big cities!

XinXin is a local mom and pop Asian restaurant that bills itself as "asian fusion cuisine.". The ambiance is pleasant and clean, but also homey and informal. I noticed one of the cooks was using a dining room table to prepare vegetables while watching a video on her phone. The lady who took my order at the front counter also played the role of server. The counter was cluttered. When I walked in, no one acknowledged me for a few minutes. The lady was talking to someone - whether a friend or client I could not tell. When he left, she finally turned to me and asked if I wanted take-out or dine in. I can't say she was either welcoming nor friendly, but once I stated my intentions were to dine in she led me to a table and handed me the menu. Xin Xin does not have a buffet. But that ensures that everything is made fresh as you order it. They offer dine in, take out, and have a drive through window. Their menu is pretty extensive with Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese entrees.. some of which I have never heard and would need coaching to pronounce. I wanted something more familiar, and ordered the Triple Delight lunch special. The lunch special came with my choice of soup, and either white or fried rice. I ordered the hot and sour soup and fried rice. The lunch special portion was generous but I was hungry and finished it all. I can't say the food quality stood out as extra special, but it was very good and I enjoyed it. The Triple Delight was supposed to have beef, chicken, and shrimp, but I did not detect any beef. There was plenty of the chicken and shrimp. The menu lists beverages as canned soft drinks, a couple of juices like coconut or lychee, and hot or iced tea. I asked the server if the iced tea was fresh brewed and she assured me it was. When she brought out a bottle of Gold Peak sweet iced tea I wondered if she knew enough English to understand my question and what "fresh brewed" means... The Gold Peak was decent, but not the same as fresh brewed. My experience with the service and ambience was lacking. The drink was also a little disappointing. The food, however was very good and the prices were reasonable. Considering the competition, they need to up their game if they want my business. read more

I was in the area and happen to be craving Asian food. This was lunch time on a weekday so I went for one of their lunch specials. I ordered the Champagne Chicken, which comes with soup. The waitress was really friendly and funny. She was like, "despite what the menu says, there's only one soup - Hot & Sour Soup." Lol The soup was good. It has the Hot & Sour Soup flavor that I recognized. Also like that it wasn't gunky in texture. Some places put too much corn starch in it. This place did it right. The main dish was just what I wanted - Chicken & Veggies. The brown sauce that it was in was very tasty. Rice taste like rice but I can tell it's not the best quality rice but it works. The chili paste surprised me. It was really good and had a good amount of heat to it. When I add that to the dish, it gave it another depth of flavor. Looking around, the place looks a little worn down. It could use some love so ambiance wise it's a pretty basic no frill type of place. Reminds me of a lot of authentic, hole in the wall, Asian restaurants in Houston. The complex that it's a part of has several parking spaces. Overall, I got what I came for and it's budget friendly. Xin Xin had never disappointed before and we always order the same thing. A full order of vegetable egg rolls and spicy noodle soap but today's was an exception. As you can see all of the egg rolls were over cooked and grease but one was fried beyond recognition. I don't understand how the cook could have served this plate to anyone. It's always the small, unassuming Asian eateries that have something wonderful to offer. Tucked in a small shopping center on bustling 10th Street in the middle of McAllen, Xin Xin serves up some curry chicken that's a win-ner. I ordered some for dinner during a stay in nearby Pharr. My expectations are a tad lowered when I get takeout from an unfamiliar place, but I was pleasantly surprised that the curry chicken was not only plentiful and nicely packaged but it bore a rich, delicious taste and aroma. I, however, couldn't finish it all so I saved it for the next day. The accompanying fried rice, however, was underwhelming at best. Not even soy sauce could make it taste slightly better. But that doesn't change how I recommend Xin Xin to anyone in the mood for anything Asian while in the Valley. read more

Cozy little restaurant in the same plaza as Tea Rush on 10th. Service is always great and I remember coming here when it was new some years back. Food is still excellent! These two dishes are my favorite. The sauce on the General Tso's could be a little thicker and it's be perfect. Beef Hofun is the bomb.com here. The order was definitely sharing size! What took me so long to finally check out this place?!?!?! Maybe it's the colorful sign and decorations outside that reminds me of the Americanized Asian restaurants I have been to and gotten disappointed with. It's a small restaurant that looks a little cluster when you first walk in. Just kinda pick the table you want, don't wait by the counter unless you order take out. I counted 3 servers plus the cashier. They were all very friendly. The waiter came over and asked me how I heard about the restaurant. He got very amused after I told him from Yelp. He was gonna tell me more about his work history with the restaurant, but my food came out, so he politely excused himself. Before I came to the restaurant, I already had a good idea what I wanted, based on the pictures and menu I saw on Yelp. I ordered the Hu Tieu Nam Vang/clear noodle soup with pork and seafood. On the menu, this item states to have pork liver, but I'm pretty sure since most people don't like liver (I'm one of those people), they have changed it to regular sliced pork and minced pork. The flavor is pretty close to the actual Hu Tieu Nam Vang that my mom makes. Not as good of course, but good enough for the valley and the price was reasonable at $7.95. Since it was my first time there, and my eyes are always bigger than my stomach, I also ordered the Xin Xin tofu. It's deep fried tofu top with minced pork and shrimp. The flavor was on point. I just wish it was less liquidy. They have a very extensive menu compares to all other Asian restaurants in the area, except for Hop Tung I believe (but Hop Tung is crap). I will definitely come back here more often to try out other items, especially when they are right next to my favorite boba place, 2 birds 1 stone! :) read more

I was hoping for something better based on the reviews, but this was really nothing special (although I did find the food to be quite EDIBLE unlike some other Asian restaurants in the area). The restaurant is located in a new strip mall next to an Asian market and a tea house (I can't wait to check those out as well). The decor is modern, the ambiance pleasant and the service was okay, but the food was disappointing. Maybe it was what I ordered? The hot and sour soup was bland; too many of the snow peas in my "shrimp with snow peas" were marred with brown spots; I found a lovely, long, black hair in my food and my request for eggroll dipping sauce was met with hoisin sauce (Really? With an Asian market next door that's the best you can come up with? I didn't think it was that unusual of a request). On a positive note, the vegetables and the medium shrimp were cooked to perfection. The highlight was the triangular-shaped eggroll thing. Yummy. My favorite Asian restaurant back in Kansas called these "mandu" but I'm not sure what they call them here. Regardless, it was a welcome sight and a reason for me to return! I even informed the staff there and they just removed the plate. Didn't ask if I wanted anything else, even-though I didn't. I was still charged for my meal. For some reason, I was reviewing my yelp app and came across my unfinished review of this place and noticed someone mentioned a roach in their food. I apologize again for not warning you. Its ok. Nothing special. Basically your typical Chinese food restaurant. The fried egg rolls are good. I had the lo mein shrimp, it was fine I still ate the left overs the next day. My husband had the pad Thai with pork and added curry, extra spicy. It wasn't really spicy (he still had to add sriracha to it) and couldn't really taste the curry. Sister had the chicken Udon Noodles and gave our a 3 out of 5 review on it. Brother got fried rice with shrimp and they loved it, said it had good flavor. I find this place pretty good for the valley. The price for the pho is reasonable, they don't scrimp on the veggies and the service is great. I got a spicy pho (resembles more of a bun bo hue) and it was pretty good. The fried spring rolls were also delicious and again they don't scrimp on the veggies. All said, this is a pretty solid place to get a Vietnamese fix. Although they don't have as diverse of a menu as I would hope for (they have the usual American Chinese food), this is a guaranteed great place. May I also add that they sell the most relatively affordable and tasty pho in the valley. (I'm looking at you pho 1 in Harlingen you awful awful horrible excuse of a restaurant). read more

My mom and I decided to order Chinese takeout one evening, so we thought to give this place a try. We ordered Mongolian Beef and Sweet and Sour Chicken. We also ordered white and fried rice. Let me start off by saying that the Mongolian beef was NOT Mongolian Beef. I'm not sure if perhaps the person taking our order mistakenly gave us something else, but what we had was a gooey, slimy chicken in a clear sauce with a brown tint. It had some onions in it, but was just gross. It tasted nothing like Mongolian Beef. Next, comes the sweet and sour chicken which was just as bad. The breading on the chicken was soggy and the chicken tasted old. The sauce wasn't good either! The only kind of decent part was the fried rice but it was definitely mediocre. Nothing special. I cannot speak for all the items on the menu, but from the two dishes I did try, I can confidently say that they were awful. Found this place via Yelp. Quaint, unassuming inside decor. Wait staff very friendly and helpful. Had charred chicken bun w/ vegetarin sauce. Sprouts, lemongrass, cilantro very fresh, chicken not overcooked. Veggie sauce not overpowering. I added chili oil for heat. I've had this dish in Austin TX in the asian market off Lamar and this bun is just as good. Fresh and light tasting. We also had general tso chicken w/ fried rice. Sauce tasted homeade, hint of orange/citrus in sauce, chicken was not over breaded/was tender. It was all white meat. Prices reasonable. Will recommend to family/friends. Will return. read more

1st time here. Warmly & happily greeted by our waitress. Not sure if she is the owner or somehow related but, she was extremely friendly, attentive & very helpful w/the menu. All of the food we ordered was quick, delicious & very well served. The curry is super tasty & delicious! The only thing I didn't like was my soup broth cause it had a peanut sauce (which was my fault for not asking what "Sa Tâ" was) but, on the plus side it had plenty of beef. This is the go to place when I feel like eating Chinese food, it is a little pricey but all for good reason. The food taste great and it's in REALLY BIG portions which I love. Honestly one meal could feed two people maybe even three depending on your appetite. Would really recommend this place because it deserves more recognition. read more

To preface something another reviewer already mentioned, this is not really fusion food. It's vietnamese and chinese food and a few other asian dishes sprinkled into the menu. Portions are large, the pricing isn't too bad, and the food is good. Another great place for the valley. The real kicker though and why I give this place 5 freaking stars is if you are vietnamese or chinese you can actually call the restaurant ahead of time and ask the owner to make you some of the more traditional dishes that ARE NOT ON THE MENU. So far I've gotten them to make ca kho and canh ca chua, some of my favorite stuff. You can find a larger menu at hop tung but their food isn't as good and honestly, the owner/workers there are sort of b*tches there. The ones who work here some like honest mom and pops and super nice. Normally I reserve 5 stars for the best of the best but in this case a little love goes a long way so they deserve it. read more

When I think Vietnamese, I think fresh and light what I got was fried food and beef and mushrooms drowning in a sea of sauce. I wanted soft spring rolls, opted for fried calamari. So.... We were planning on going to a little pizza place here called Russo`s pizza until we came across a Asian restaurant called Xin xin. I wasn't to happy that we were going there but... I thought I would give it a try. So as we walk in it's a very nice facility and very organized and we get greeted right away we choose are seats and sat down but right across us are 4 ladies which they were talking very loud so we had to move.. But the good thing was that we got our drinks right away and we ordered within 5 minutes. What I liked about the restaurant is that you didn't need to wait long for your food and they check in with you a lot So..... I give Xin xin a 4 star I could of been more pleased though. : ) read more

Tonight's dinner from XinXin has been the best! However, they always have great dishes. We ordered udon noodles w/chicken and the beef ho fun; both dishes were delicious. We'll be ordering that again! Everything is made with fresh vegetables and sauces are delicate and tasty. All portions are large and are made for sharing. It's more of a Chinese food restaurant. The food was a lot better than other restaurants in the mcallen area. The service was not too bad.. The restaurant was practically empty and we waited about 3-4 minutes for someone to greet us. They should have a better host the customer would feel more welcomed. The server was polite. I told whT it was our first time there hoping she would help us out with the menu. Like what are the most popular dishes etc. overall we had a great dinner.. The beef soup was AMAAAZING! And as per my S. O., the general tso chicken is his go to dish. One of the better tasting general tso dishes in the city. The service could improve a tad. The location also has a drive thru which is convenient. I would definitely recommend and go again! read more
