Vietnamese restaurant in Westboro…read more Beautiful decor, pleasant service and tasty food.
The Long Version:
Ho Guom is the name of a lake in Hanoi, Vietnam. So not surprisingly, the restaurant serves Vietnamese food, specializing in dishes from Hanoi. This location had its soft opening on July 21, 2026, which is the date we visited it. However, they have 2 well-established locations in Montreal (I think the original opened in 2009).
My husband and I had dinner there. I got the Grilled Beef and Chicken Vermicelli Table d'hôte ($34) which came with the House soup, imperial rolls, coffee/tea and a fried banana dessert. My husband got the Beef and Shrimp stir-fry with rice ($24). He didn't get the table d'hôte because he knew I'd be sharing all my additional items with him. Lol. I also ordered a Che Ba Mau (tricolour dessert) $5 to-go at the end of the meal to take home.
My meal was delicious. The beef was a bit on the thin side but it was tender and flavourful. It had a tiny bit of gristle but was on the most part lean. The chicken was thigh meat, which is not my preference as I like breast meat, but it was not gristley at all. It was quite lean for dark meat, so I really enjoyed it. It came with tasty crunchy pickled carrots and cabbage and iceberg lettuce.
The starter House Soup was tasty. It was a tad salty for my preferences though. I enjoyed the vegetables and was pleasantly surprised that it had some slices of chicken in it (breast meat even, yay!) and rice noodles. It was like a mini chicken pho.
The imperial rolls were crispy on the outside and filled with ground pork, vermicelli noodles and vegetables. Most restaurants in Montreal call them imperial rolls, but here in Ottawa most restaurants call them spring rolls (they are deep-fried with wheat wrappers). In Montreal they use the term spring rolls to refer to the rice paper rolls that are fresh and not fried. In Vietnamese they are called Goi Cuon. Here in Ottawa those rolls are called summer rolls, fresh rolls or fresh spring rolls. Anyway, I am digressing, but I find regional names for the same foods interesting.
The fried banana dessert was good. It's a banana dipped in batter and deep-fried. It wasn't too sweet, which I appreciated.
The Che Ba Mau was also good. It had whole sweetened beans, mashed mung beans, Pandan jello and crushed ice with coconut milk.
The tea was fragrant.
My husband enjoyed his dish. He gave me a shrimp, which was plump and a good size. He had one of my imperial rolls and he liked it too. He wasn't a fan of the soup because it had cilantro in it, lol. He liked the banana dessert but didn't try the Che Ba Mau because he thinks beans in a dessert is weird. Haha.
Overall we really enjoyed our meal there, especially with the soft opening 10% off discount, lol.
Service was pleasant. We were served by many different servers. When you are done, you pay at the counter. Remember your table number because you'll have to confirm it with the cashier.
Decor is beautiful. There's a gorgeous mural on one of the walls and a wooden tree sculpture in the middle of the restaurant.
The restaurant is where the original Moe's Newport Restaurant was for a long time before it moved further north to join Donna's Express. Most recently though it was the location of the very short-lived Goldfinch, which was Zak's Westboro before that, and The Savoy prior to that. Let's hope Ho Guom has some longevity at this location.
Street parking only.
I'm thrilled to have a Vietnamese restaurant within walking distance from my home. Glad to have them in the neighbourhood.
