I had a craving for pho yesterday and decided to visit Pho Hai, a local spot near Mt. SAC. I ordered shrimp spring rolls and pho with rare steak and flank. The shrimp rolls were delicious, and the pho featured fresh ingredients. While the broth didn't quite match my favorite spot from San Gabriel, it was still good. The restaurant was clean, the staff friendly, and my order was ready quickly. Parking is ample in the shopping center. I intend to go back, as I felt something was missing. They advertise a great combo deal/special AND an employee discount if you work at Mt. Sac. However, the food was honestly one of the worst pho and spring rolls I've ever had. Both really plain and oddly greasy. The "free" dessert was in the smallest container I've ever seen--like the type of container for salad dressing. The employee discount was also not valid if you dont have a physical ID EVEN IF you have other forms of proof of employment. This review is a bit overdue but I'm actually so disappointed. Came here a couple of times but this is a reminder to self to not come back. The pho was really lacking flavor and quality. I couldn't enjoy the broth which really makes or breaks the purpose of pho. The spring rolls I received were also pre-made and taken out from the fridge as evidenced by the hardened rice wrap. I ended up taking one bite and leaving the rest. I went in the morning when they just opened (not today specifically but the other day) so I get why they served the left-over spring rolls, but that was so disappointing, especially since you pay the same price expecting fresh-quality ones. WHEN: 12/30/21 Thursday @ 2pm Ordered a big takeout order from here for me and my friends. If you're ordering pho togo you can only get a large size but it's only $1 more than the regular so it's worth it. The food was ready in 20 minutes! I ordered the Pho Dac Biet ($12) and it came with lots of meat and noodles. The soup was flavorful and the meats were all tender. It was cold on a Friday night, so my boyfriend and I decided to get some pho at Pho Hai. We didn't have to wait long as they were already cleaning a table for us to sit on! This location felt like any other pho place in the Bay, so it felt cozy and like home. We both got the rare & fatty brisket pho (I forgot which number), and I got it without green onions, but requested a plate of white onions. The large was pretty big and only $1 more than a regular size, so I would consider it worth upgrading. The broth was good, nothing to complain about, and it was HOT. The pho came with a lot of meat, which was great! But the fatty brisket, although the name is *fatty* brisket, was much more fat than meat -- which meant that there were just random pieces of inedible fat floating around in the soup :( I still enjoyed it though! Don't go for the spring rolls. My daughter and I were craving spring rolls and stopped by. We ordered the pork and the shrimp spring rolls. They were SO BLAND and dry! No mint, no cilantro, no basil, no flavor...it was basically just lettuce, a few pieces of carrot, some sprouts and dry, flavorless pork/chicken. We choked it down with a lot of peanut sauce and drank a lot of water, only because we were super hungry. We regretted our decision to stop here. My parents typically get their to-go pho from orange county, but seeing that it's 45 minutes away from us, this new restaurant was perfect for us to try! We called and place an order for two pho bowls. Only the large sizes are available for to go. There are medium sizes available if you dine in. The pho xe lua was very good. The broth was spot on and the toppings were generous. The other bowl we got was pho gan (tendon) and it also came with a generous portion of tendons! The to go meal came with all the fixings, lime, greens, bean sprouts. As is good practice the noodles were packaged separately. They also give you the option of getting uncooked noodles in case you were planning to eat it much later. We also ordered two flans. They were teeny tiny flans. It was good but probably not worth the cost. Overall, the service was friendly and fast! The food was ready for me to pick up earlier than they said. My family and I really enjoy coming here. They have the best soup broth versus other pho restaurants in the surrounding area so if you're gonna come, definitely get the pho bowl. They have great ingredient portioning-not too much noodles and the right amount of meat. The veggies can be a hit or miss sometimes. Some days it's not as fresh and the mint leaves and bean sprouts can be a little old but the food is great nonetheless. I also highly recommend trying their bahn-mi (pork sandwich). The bread is so good! We were really nervous about the new change of management but they have kept the recipes close to, if not, the same as the previous owners. This place continues to be our go-to for Vietnamese food. The pho brisket is my favorite and they do a great job with it - flavorful broth with a good amount of meat and noodle. The pork bahn mi is tasty and the baguette they use is crisp and flaky, but still soft. I only wish they had a deli style bahn mi. But everything we've had here - grilled pork vermicelli noodles, egg rolls, etc. has been great. For $12.95, you can order a bowl of pho off the menu (#1-10 only), opt for a spring roll or 2 eggs rolls as an appetizer, and receive both a drink + flan for dessert. My dad ordered the dac biet which comes with rare steak, flank, tendon and tripe. I customized my large bowl of pho ($8.70) with my favorite cuts of meat. The soup was flavorful and each bowl was proportionally generous. My sister liked her com bi cha thit nuong ($9:50). The rice plate was comprised of grilled pork, meat load, shredded pork, veggies, and a heap of rice. The grilled pork was tender and had a nice char. It was deliciously marinated. Luckily for us, we ate on Christmas Eve so the parking lot was virtually empty, but I can totally see it being a hassle to find parking during peak hours. I've been waiting to eat at Pho Hai for a little while now as for the past few months, the restaurant has been going through a full kitchen refurbishment. After hearing about their reopening, I finally headed over there to decide if it was good. I walked in on a Saturday around noon to see the dining room decently filled with college students and families alike. The variety of people gave me the impression that the restaurant was more than likely focused on their food and not necessarily providing a specific kind of ambiance. I sat down and was given a menu, a water, and a placemat with ads on it. Looking at the menu was pretty quick as my heart was already set on an order of their Large Combination Pho. The waitress came over after a few minutes and quickly took my order. The large bowl of pho cost 14 dollars before tax and tip. The bowl of pho and the plate of condiments you'd typically get arrived after 10 minutes of waiting, which was pleasantly unexpected! The waiters move fast which is always a positive. From the menu, this particular bowl of pho listed rare steak, flank steak, tripe, and tendon as the main ingredients. Upon inspecting the bowl, it looked very enticing with a nice brown color of the broth. The ingredients looked very fresh, which actually made my mouth water a bit. The ingredient distribution was overall good, but could be better. The biggest highlight for this dish quantity-wise would be that they were very generous with the amount of tripe given. Out of any pho restaurant I've eaten at, this one has given the most tripe per dish by far. The flank and rare steak were plentiful with a good 6-7 pieces which was expected. On the other hand, the tendon was probably the most scarce item in the mix with around 2-3 small pieces. As a side note, I noticed this particular pho had a lot more noodles compared to other pho restaurants I've eaten at. Overall for this area, I'd say the price was reasonable for the bowl size and the amount of ingredients. The flavors did not disappoint either, the broth had a good savory and sweet balanced flavor that was reminiscent of beef broth (which makes sense). The noodles were thinner, but not the thinnest kind of noodles you find for a bowl of pho. Because of this, they were not gooey. Rather, the noodles were mildly dense. I personally like thinner, somewhat gooey noodles, but this was not bad at all as it contributed by making the dish feel more volume-filled. The flank and rare steak were mostly on par as they were not too chewy and had a decent amount of fat which gave some extra flavor. The tripe wasn't too firm which made it palatable and provided more variety of texture than the simple noodle and thin piece of beef most bowls of pho have. Finally, the tendon was just mediocre being on the more chewy side and not really having much flavor in it. In all, it tasted good! In lieu of their return, I believe Pho Hai deserves a good 4 stars out of 5. The quantity was pretty good at the price and the bowl was good for what it was worth. The servers came by occasionally which I expected for a restaurant like this. If I had to give some advice: If giving thick noodles, dial down the volume. I noticed in many of the photos here on Yelp, the pho pictures are very heavy on noodles. If looking for noodle density, consider adding less noodles or giving more gooey noodles. Other than that, the experience was definitely a successful one and I'd recommend this spot to people in the Walnut area, especially students of Mt. Sac. and Cal Poly Pomona. read more

It's nestled in the plaza across of Mt Sac and there's typically parking available in the shared lot. Bathrooms are available for customer use. Credit cards are accepted for transactions over $10 and they'll take MasterCard/Visa. The prices are very reasonable and they have a special as well which includes a medium bowl of pho, spring rolls, choice of drink, and flan for ~$13 + tax. The food is very fresh and tastes just like home cooking. We ordered spring rolls and those came to us fresh from the fryer to our table (so tasty). There are medium and large sizes of the noodle options available - they were super filling and came with plenty of fresh bean sprouts & basil on the side. Unfortunately they ran out of the fresh coconut when we were there, but they do have boba and other drink options. Former Cal Poly Alumni, I've always come here for their pho because it's the best one overall. I currently reside in Orange County specifically Westminster "the Vietnamese area" ifyyk, there is NOT one good pho I like even down there. Since I was in Walnut I did take out for Pho Hai.. got their Pho Gan (rare beef with tendon), large, to go. I also tried out their avocado smoothie and crystal boba. Crystal boba--wow! I have never had this before. It kind of reminds me of a fruit.. but sweet and a little chewy. It does not have the same texture as regular boba, a definite must try! I had this paired with the avocado which is not very sweet, which was a perfect combo! I would definitely have this again. Their Pho.. was so much food. I only ate half of it at home because it was so much food. They do give you the beef rare, yes, still bloody and partially frozen. I recommend heating up the broth to make sure it is piping hot before you pour it over the raw meat. They also gave plenty of tendon. Overall, I was very surprised at the portion (even for a large). For the price, it is definitely worth it. Their broth is very flavorful as well. It is nice having a spot in Walnut for some good pho!
