Pho is fantastic, noodle bowls are also good. Food comes out fast, service is perfectly fine.

Service was an issue is the beginning. We walked in and weren't sure if we took our own seats or waited for some one to seat us. We waited for about 3 minutes and then a young girl sat us down. We waited once again and didn't get menus for about 10 minutes. She finally saw we didn't have menus when I turned around and looked for some. The spring rolls were ok, I've had better. The spring roll was freshly rolled but the ingredients didn't seem fresh that were inside. The rice wrap was chewier then normal. We also ordered the Vietnamese pancake and I forgot to take a picture. That was made very well and the best we've had for a long time. The pancake was pan fried nicely. The flavor was good but we could have used a little more sauce. The lettuce, carrots and cucumber were fresh and finished up the pancake nicely. The Pho was decent. Not bad since it is so far away from places like argyle. The broth was good but didn't have as much flavor compared to some other places we normally go to. The veggies didn't come with the basil and other normals I'm use to as well. The only condiments they had on the table were sirracha and hoisen sauce. I'm used to having chili oil too. Overall it was good for being probably the only place in Des Plaines to get a bowl of Pho. There was one of the staff that was very chipper and friendly. We didn't have him waiting on us but if we did, I'm sure our visit would have been better with service. read more

As an Asian-American who has had a LOT of pho from a ton of places, I can honestly say I wasn't impressed with this place. Here's my full review: So, there are many places I go for Pho... and in the future, this will not be one of them. I try to give the most thorough review possible - so I will talk about everything I ordered. I should also mention that it is 2020 and everything is carry-out... BUT, I've had carry-out from other pho places before, and this place doesn't do it so well. 1. Pho Dac Biet - I've had this "style" everywhere else, and the meat / tendon / tripe is definitely overcooked here. They should have the meat separate from the rest of the broth, but instead, it was overcooked inside the broth. The meat was rubbery, meatballs were rubbery, and tripe tough to chew. The broth was also not the normal pho broth I've had everywhere else. This one tasted crazy greasy, and seemed more like a beef broth than a pho broth. (oh - lots of broth, not enough noodles / protein) 2. Papaya shrimp salad - probably the best thing I ordered from this place. Fresh, tasty, definitely cleanses the palate. I've had papaya salad at other places, and this one is pretty close to those. 3. Spring rolls - small and slim. Peanut sauce to dip is also kinda runny. I guess everyone does spring rolls their own way - this one was busting out around the ends... not my favorite. 4. Banh mi Bo - I've never tasted a banh mi sandwich that didn't have the shredded beet/radish/carrots in the sandwich before. And the meat was overcooked sirloin. Not a fan. I should also add that the sauce that makes a banh mi sandwich was either lacking or completely non-existent in this sandwich. 5. Grilled chicken and rice - Um, overcooked chicken, and honestly, didn't taste any different than any American grilled chicken dish I've had before (minus the sauce on the side). They also gave a TON of rice, but not enough chicken. Honestly, the way most of the food tasted here, I would almost say that it's not really a Vietnamese restaurant... maybe it's a different region of Vietnamese food? I'm not Viet, so I don't want to speculate, but it just tastes so different than any other Viet restaurant I've ever been... I wish the Asian restaurant community well - and I would love to give my business to them... but if I ordered anything here, it would probably be one of the papaya salads, and nothing else. read more

Stopped in for an order of wings and an order of pork skewers. Wings were tiny tiny. But did have a "little" meat on them. They tasted fine. The pork skewers were cold, dry, and lifeless. Food is very good. Portions are smaller with less meat which is understandable due to the pandemic. Prices have gone up considerably as well. Some appetizers have gone up so much that they should be marked as an entrée. But here's the real kicker! The female owner (?) and grandson are some of the most rudest people I've ever met in the restaurant industry. They act as if they're doing us a favor by letting us sit down at their restaurant. It took forever to even get a menu and there was maybe one other couple there. They never came to check on how we're doing or to fill water. We always had to ask and then it still takes another 10 minutes. This place is very comfortably family friendly. Friendly staff as well very prompt. My favorite was the pho soup. It came in a large bowl with noodles and you can add as much jalapeno as you like. We had the jumble appetizer platter which it was so good too. It had a little of everything. For drink, I was recommended the iced coffee and to my surprise, it was amazing! While I have certainly had worse, I was quite disappointed with the fare. Just goes to show that regardless of how many newspaper articles one has posted by their entrance, one should reserve judgment until all the evidence is on the table and dissected thoroughly. Actually, the beef pho here was a-okay; not extraordinary, not terrible. Unlike the pho I had during my recent trip to Argyle, they make a better meat broth here. It's not as rich and leaves with a cleaner taste, which for me is better. The slices of beef (not sure if it was brisket, though it was very thin and lean) were also satisfactory; the color and taste didn't raise any red flags at least. Unfortunately, this was the best part of the meal. For those of you, like me, who appreciate a righteous banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwich), you're better off looking elsewhere. The grilled beef is not only very fatty, but it's also smothered with too much sauce (that tasted like some generic american barbecue seasoning, which really confused me), making the overall sandwich a bit on the soggy side. I realize this is a meal meant to be savory, but to me it was just greasy and I couldn't get past that. What a letdown. Stay away from the combination fried rice too. For a small plate of rice with only a pinch of (very dry and minced) meat/shrimp, this is a joke of an entree. It couldn't even pass as a half-decent side dish for me, merely something I wound up eating with my pho out of guilt for spending money on it. I'm a flight attendant and I always crave Asian cuisine so that's what I eat every time I have a layover. When I was in Chicago for a few hours longer than expected - I called a fellow flight attendant friend who is based in Chicago to ask if she's around and if she's hungry. We decided on here due to the location and I never had high expectations so I came in here expecting nothing. Well first off - their service is AMAZING and they make you feel very welcome. Second off - their food is AMAZING as well and I wasn't that hungry but I finished everything. I'll definitely be coming again when I layover next in Chicago. This is an authentic Vietnamese hole in the wall resto, much or even better than the one I go to in Argyle' s 777 resto. I've been to this place to more than a decade and it's queen of soups "Pho # 38" never disappoints. Such a simple soup but so homey and hearwarming, very fillingly delish! You cannot go wrong with spring roll. It 's such a delight to chew and further masticate with the shrimp and fresh mung sprouts , so heavenly! but they have to add chopped up peanut to its sauce and they have to be generous with it even if I have to pay extra for it. That's why I rate them a star less for this. The catfish in the menu is awesomely delish that I have to save a little in order to leave some and eat it for days ....Avocado shake is a refreshingly cool mainstay that I always crave. Pho.nomenal. Un.Pho.gettable. I was introduced to Pho about a year ago. Since then it has been a weekly ritual at a hole in the wall near my home. No joke. The highlight of my week is "Pho Friday". However, finding a great little spot near the office for lunch had been somewhat challenging...until I discovered Dung Gia. At first the menu is slightly overwhelming. It's HUGE. I stuck to my tried and true items. The Goi Cuon and peanut sauce (Vietnamese spring rolls - with tofu) were delish! As a non-seaftood eater, it was nice to see a variety of spring rolls...without shrimp! I also indulged in a large bowl of beef Pho. The beef and the noodles were perfect, and the broth was extremely flavorful. I loaded my bowl with jalapeno and basil and chowed down. The waitstaff was friendly. The service was fast. Food was good, but the service was terrible. We had been at Uncork Unwind (wine bar next to the restaurant) and decided to give the restaurant a try. Thank God we weren't in a hurry because it was an ordeal to get our orders placed and glasses and cork screw for our wine. We started with spring rolls and then had a variety of entrees. My first time eating Vietnamese food! I've been missing out! This place is delicious! I had their Pho (broth, noodles made of rice, few herbs and meat) and Shrimp Spring Rolls. The Pho was absolutely delicious! A friend of mine recommended that I have the Pho with beef raw on the side...then add hoisin and sriracha sauce. I did exactly this and it was absolutely scrumptious! The Pho was also served with bean sprouts and basil. The spring rolls are a perfect finger food. The rolls are wrapped in this rice paper which is a little chewy and peanut dipping sauce. A side note... I've been here several times and pretty much order the same thing all the time. The pho special and chicken wings. It's my cold and hangover remedy ;) The pho broth is clean and not greasy like other pho I've had. A little more meat would be great though. The chicken wings are tasty and full of flavor. I wonder why they don't serve the drum part though :) Sure there is better pho down by Argyle but this is a great alternative if you don't want to drive so far. This Vietnamese mom and pop place is a treasure in downtown Des Plaines. Having visited many times, my wife and I have our favorites. The grilled pork is not to be missed. The eggplant and tofu dish will win over even people who do not care for tofu. The pho is delightful. I order the one with beef, meatballs, and tripe. The condiments and side plate with basil, sprouts, jalapeño, and lime make each visit an experiment in customizing my soup. The staff is friendly and helpful. I ordered the beef with vermicelli noodles - the beef was pink, it didn't look all that appetizing but it was cooked. The pho isn't very flavorful either. We ordered the bubble tea, which was too icy, not like the normal smoothie texture it should be. If I were craving Vietnamese food in the suburbs, I'd make the drive to Pho Ha. We came for the pho and we were not disappointed. Pho in the burbs is a bit tricky, and driving down to Argyle isn't an option. We've tried Pho U (2 stars) and Asian noodle house (3.5 stars) but Dung Gia will be our go-to for this noodle beef broth yummyness. The plate of bean sprouts, jalapeños and basil was fresh and generous. The broth was steaming, and you can taste the anise balanced against the basil, cilantro and fresh lime. Skip the bubble tea. I am so happy I found my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. I started ordering food from their location in Skokie, then they moved to Evanston, and then they disappeared. I read a review that mentioned that they were once known as Anaheim express. What a treat to find excellent food with service by friendly happy individuals. This evening I special ordered my favorite Vietnamese style crab. It was a ton of work to get the crab meat out but I was so grateful to enjoy the succulent flavors of antic Vietnamese delicacies. We also split an appetizer of crispy quail. Friends enjoyed their appetizer platter and their soup is filled with all the flavors of Asia. This has been me and my family's go to spot for quite some time. It is a good alternative to get your Vietnamese food or pho fix if you aren't in the city or near argyle street! I've had the pho which is very good, Bò Lúc Lc (sautéed cubes beef) which is one of my fav dishes if I'm not in the mood for pho, a noodle dish (can't recall which one but it was good), appetizer sampler - so good, fried rice which of course you can't go wrong with, spring rolls, Banh mi, and Vietnamese iced coffee. Every time I go in the owner remembers my family and even knows my dad's order before he even says it! It is a small place and family owned, but I've never been disappointed here! Let me preface this by saying I'm not a huge fan of pho (travesty, I know). The pho here was pretty standard, tasted like the pho I've had at many other places. Maybe I've just been fortunate enough to not have eaten bad pho or maybe I just can't tell the difference, but the pho here didn't really stand out. Service was very friendly. One hiccup though, we did have to ask the server for the bean sprouts & herbs a few minutes after we got the pho. I'm used to them bringing it out with, or even before the pho gets to the table so we waited a little expecting them to bring it before we asked. I stopped on in for lunch recently and this place was okay. The restaurant can get cold because there isn't a vestibule to diffuse the air, especially when it's -10000 degrees out. It took a really long time to get even the menu (by really long, I mean like 5+ minutes) when it should be the first thing you get upon being seated. I ordered the #10 special (Bun thit heo nuong... Marinated pork grilled rice noodles, lettuce, shredded carrots, cucumber, special sauce). They could have been a little more generous with the meat portion, but I understand it was their lunch special so the portion is lighter. It tasted good. Meal also came with a side soup (chicken broth). What I did like was that they also have smoothies/boba here. I tried the avocado (with tapioca) and it was fine - was hoping it would've been a little bit sweeter but can't complain.
