Ouch and delicious - all at the same time. I hadn't been to Pho Chau for ages (pre-COVID) and know it changed owners. The food was awesome - had spring rolls and curry. The layers of flavor were terrific in the curry. The painful part, was the cost. EEKS! The prices are high and on top of it they add 3% on to your bill if you pay by credit card. My advice to you - pay cash and don't order tea (it's not a kettle, just a bag in the cup - not worth it). If price is not an issue for you - you'll absolutely love it. For me, it'll be a 'once in awhile' treat for lunch/dinner. The quality and flavor is very good. Been to this place literally twice in the past week! It's a great place to get your Vietnamese food. Craving some pho? This is the place to go! "Pho Chau": Comes with everything you could ask for sliced beef, brisket, flank, soft tendon, tripe, and meatballs. The pho noodles are cooked to the right consistency not too soft and not too hard. Staff cooked the bean sprouts and gave me mint leaves, jalapeño peppers, and limes. The portion size is huge! Don't be deceived by what seems like a HUGE bowl with lots of soup but no content. The bowl is literally "xe lua" in Vietnamese or "train size" in English. I came in quite hungry and this was more than enough- in hindsight, I probably should have just eaten half... Durian Smoothie with boba: I'm pleasantly surprised they had BOBA! The durian smoothie was really good! It wasn't too sweet and definitely had the durian taste that I was craving. They say its real durian too- can't complain about that! Boba wasn't the best though- it wasn't sweet like at other locations, but its also probably one of the only locations to get boba in Rochester so I can't complain. read more

Solid local Pho joint. The pho itself is great, if slightly under-spiced, the Vietnamese Crepe is fantastic, but the star of the show, folks, is the fried rice. Most of the time, fried rice is a dry, but oily experience. It's made in bulk 4 hours early, and gallons of vegetable oil is mixed in to keep it moist. Then, the restaurant will just re-fry it occasionally and serve it up. Not here. EVERY plate of fried rice is made to order, and it tastes like it. It is a basic dish at it's core, and it should only be composed of 3-4 flavors at most. Theirs is perfect. You can't go wrong, and even ordering 4 main dishes, two appetizers, and drinks, the bill is still under $50. read more

You'll get a huge bowl of beef broth soup when you order the Pho. I recommend the Beef and Brisket, with 1/2 noodles and 2x meat ... if you're a meat lover like I am. After making the dreaded trip to Rochester, MN to go to the Mayo Clinic, all I wanted was some comfort Vietnamese/Thai food. Pho Chau had a seemingly well rounded menu, and a 4 star Yelp review... Let's start with the "fresh" spring rolls first, the rice paper was completely hard and there was no pork inside the spring roll whatsoever, not to mention that the lettuce and cilantro were both brown. Those spring rolls were certainly not fresh. Now on to the chicken pad Thai... Ugh I was so disappointed. There were absolutely no peanuts to be found in the pad Thai.... ABSURDITY if you ask me. Stopped in on a Friday night during dinner rush. Because of how busy it was the service was spotty so I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt on this. I first ordered the Vietnamese eggrolls (sorry forgot to take a picture). They are more like a Chinese egg roll with sweet and sour sauce. I happened to have my dinner over at Pho Chau tonight and wasn't very pleased with the experience. I ordered Goi Cuon for starters which was tasteless- it is basically some cold noodles and shrimp wrapped around a lettuce served with a sweet sauce. You can get this from any asian store. Then I ordered Lo mein with Shrimp, Squid and chicken - which was also unsavory - as it was just a bunch of stuff fried together without any particular flavor to it. Can't speak for the pho but the crab rangoons were delicious! Chicken pad Thai was okay -- another reviewer mentioned the onions and I wished I had heeded their advice. It was jam-picked with onions, crowding out the noodles and meat and even spice. Otherwise good though. Service was fast and my water was constantly being refilled so no complaints there. I never had a bad experience here . The food is very reasonable priced and I always get the spring rolls . Sometimes I get a order to go just to snack on later . Had such high hopes for an "authentic Viet restaurant". We ate lunch here and ordered dinner to go for later (in town with family at Mayo). For lunch we had pho, cream cheese wontons and spring rolls. Having had pho from many restaurants, and having tried many different variations and styles all over the US (lao style, Thai style, Hmong style, Viet style, fusion/American style), considering this was a viet style pho it was "barely ok". The broth was lacking depth of flavor and the tendon was super chewy. An order of shrimp spring rolls were two very skinny (1" diameter) spring rolls with their ends cut off and mainly filled with lettuce. The cream cheese wontons were crispy and good. To go, we ordered bun (vermicelli noodle bowls), the pork chop version and the combo with grilled beef and egg roll version, as well as a side of egg rolls. We were disappointed in these. The meat was "ok", not extremely tasty but not bad either. The veggies were notably missing pickled radish/carrots-one of the things that really make this dish. The sauce was bland and a tad too sweet, and the pork chop came as a whole large flat piece of meat (they couldn't slice it up?) which made eating on the go difficult. The most insulting thing however, was the egg rolls, these poor egg rolls were done so wrong. Both our side order and the one in my noodle bowl. They were so so sad. An order came with two ugly, gross egg rolls :( my combo bowl came with one. They were short, wide and flat, and looked like those frozen chimichangas you get in the freezer at the grocery store, just smaller. The wrappers themselves were thicker than typical Viet style egg roll (cha gio) wrappers, making it thick and chewy instead of light and crispy :( the filling was bland and only seemed to have carrots and noodles, with carrot being the main taste/flavor. Where were the mushrooms? The meat? What happened to the seasoning? Who on earth wrapped these monstrosities? My tween kid can wrap egg rolls better than these were wrapped. Pretty sad for an Asian restaurant to fail at wrapping egg rolls. read more

I've been here multiple times with Covid procedures and I finally got to go in person the other day! The servers are always so sweet and attentive but not nosy. And the food is hot, steamy, and delicious. I've gotten their Boba couple time and it's also really good, but I always go back to their beef pho. Or the pho chau no meatballs. I can confidently say that whether you get take out or order in you will absolutely love it. The only thing I don't like about it is that I'm a Coca-Cola gal and they serve Pepsi products. Our server was very nice. We ordered and less than 15 mins we got our food. We ordered springrolls and pho which was average on taste. Springrolls were smaller in size than what we were used to. I've been to Pho Chau numerous times over the years. Always had exceptional service and the food is phenomenal. However, tonight I experienced something that has unfortunately made me come to the decision to never support this establishment again. Keep in my mind, the staff recognize me and know I've patronized their restaurant on numerous occasions. I arrived exactly at 8pm, to eat a bowl of Pho, I was alone, table of one. When I asked for a table I was informed that they were closed...I responded w disbelief "the sign says you're open until 8:30pm?!" ....her response was incredulous "oh really, I wasn't aware of that"...as I turned to walk out I observed a party of 5 that walked in...I waited to see what would happen, they were sat. I come from a melting pot city and grew up eating all kinds of authentic, unique dishes from around the world. I was visiting this city and came across Pho Chau because of its excellent ratings. My expectations might have been higher than I should have been, after reading 'authentic-best-pho-in-town' reviews but nonetheless I was very disappointed trying their pho and bún (rice vermicelli). First off, pho broth wasn't flavorful. I needed to make it taste more like pho so I asked for lime but the server brought me lemons saying that those are limes. I had to convince her that limes and lemons are different and that limes are green, not yellow. After I had shown her pictures of lime through my phone, she said they don't carry limes, they only have lemons... I cannot imagine having pho without limes. Secondly, Bún is supposed to have Vietnamese fried rolls but it had a piece of Chinese egg roll instead (the frozen kind you can find in any groceries). I believe that this isn't the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant you'll visit but I just wish that it improves a lot more to deserve these positive reviews. read more

Best-rated VN food in Rochester. I walked 1.5 miles for it. Was it worth it? Here's my story. OK, so I've been eyeing this place since I arrived in Rochester for a conference. Being a Vietnamese guy, and liking the cuisine (and just eating in general), I had to check it out. (I admit I was also curious how Vietnamese people found there way up here. Wrong turn at Albuquerque? Also went to a conference but missed the plane home?!?) So anyway, it's the second to last day of the conference, and it was already after 5 p.m., temp dropping, and I was too lazy to go back to my hotel room for my jacket. So, I briskly walked there (not fun in business shoes!), deciding to take the food to go since it was getting dark and cold. It was about 1.5 miles round trip. I let common sense blow away in the cool breeze and moved my feet. Upon arriving, I took the mandatory Yelp exterior photo, then walked in. The interior was...quaint. And that's a good thing. One thing my mom's been right about is that the fancy, upscale VN places tend to forget about authentic food. This interior was far from upscale, which held great promise for the much-anticipated food. I didn't even have to look at the menu. I ordered one of my favorite dishes, one which I use as a measuring stick for the food in a VN restaurant: com bo luc lac (rice with marinated cubed steak; see photo). I could tell the owners were happy to see another VN person, because I probably just upped the VN population in Rochester by, what, 10%? I keed, I keed! I patiently waited for the food, and the air was damp with the odors that smelled a lot like the cooking I had when growing up: clay pot dishes, hot soups, etc. That was a good sign. Another good sign was a lot of local regulars, who the owner seemed to know by name. (I normally see how many VN folks are in a VN restaurant as another measure of authenticity, but had to cut some slack due to geography in this case.) I didn't have to wait long at all, despite the restaurant being half full. My takeout plate took maybe 5 minutes tops to come out, and I then quickly hoofed it back in the now colder, darker evening. Two thoughts dominated the walk: don't let the food get too cold; and try not to be mistaken for an Asian food delivery guy. I succeeded on both counts. OK, OK. So what about the food? The plate was flavorful, and a familiarly welcome taste to my palate. (I mean, I really wasn't expecting Asian food up north, and down in Houston, you can throw a rock and hit at least three Asian restaurants if you ricochet it right.) The cubed steak was a bit tougher and chewier than I'm accustomed to from Houston VN restaurants, but I could definitely see myself coming back to order it again, and curious enough to branch out and see what else I'd like on their menu. Though I probably won't be back again till next year, I'd recommend trying the same plate (com bo luc lac), as well as their clay pot dishes and pho dac biet (the "house special"). Been to Vietnam. Korea. California. Hawaii. All different cities. And hands down, this is my favorite newly discovered pho restaurant. I wish they had one like this in Cali I usually always order fried rice at Asian restaurants to measure the authenticity of their food. Unlike my last fried rice dish at Emerald Garden (San Diego) in which I refused to finish even half of the plate, the fried rice here was very fulfilling and each bite took in all the flavored of the dish. Mi xau don is another excellent dish I'd recommend the crispy noodles weren't initially drowned in sauce and the shrimp and pork were most excellent. My wife also had pho bo but the both of us couldn't take in all the carbs. I don't think I'm going to be able to eat breakfast tomorrow I've got surgery at the mayo clinic but this place has done me good! We took the leftovers to go their bobs was also very good. I've had good Vietnamese food all over the country, and I am surprised and pleased to say that Pho Chau is some of the best I've ever had. Family owned and friendly service. Not to mention absolutely delicious food. I was home for the holidays and came here for lunch twice. Once with a large group of 20, and once with my family. For the large group of 20, they were extremely accommodating, despite the fact we took up more than half the restaurant. Service was great and they brought out all of our entrees promptly, at the same time, and hot and they didn't mess up a single order! That's quite a feat. Prices are EXTREMELY reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. The spring rolls are good (not the best I've had). The appetizer you cannot miss is the Vietnamese crepe. It's HUGE (bigger than my face - that's saying a lot after the amount of eating I've done this year) and can easily be eaten as an entree. I ordered the beef lemon grass vermicelli noodle bowl both visits because it's that good. The beef is seasoned well, vegetables are super fresh but the fish sauce. OH MY GOD. The homemade fish sauce is the best fish sauce I've ever had. I can't even describe how good it is. You will want to drown in it, I'm not kidding. Order their Crab Rangoons; they are amazing and our favorite item on the menu so far. We went a 2nd time in the same week because I was craving them. On that occasion, we picked up two orders. The second appetizer we've tried was their Banh Cong (Vietnamese Deep Fried Shrimp Cake). I loved them, but they were too big for my wife to eat in one bite and are kinda messy/hard to eat if you need to cut them up. We've tried a few items on their menu. Typically, we usually prefer the beef broth Pho when we order at other restaurants. At Pho Chau we really like their chicken broth instead. Even though their house special (Beef noodle soup w/sliced beef, well done brisket, well done shank, soft tendons, tripe, and meatball) is a beef broth, we'll order their Mi Thap Cam (Combination Egg Noodle Soup - Egg noodle chicken soup with shrimp, squid, chicken, BBQ pork, shrimp balls & quail eggs) instead. My wife just loves the quail eggs and I'm a huge fan of the BBQ pork. We both were impressed with the tasty, fresh, and perfectly cooked squid in the dish. All their Pho comes with the typical fresh veggy sides for a great price. On our second trip we decided to try their main dishes too. We loved their Tofu Pad Thai; a great tasting dish with extremely fresh ingredients. On our next visit, it will be difficult to decide between their Pho or any of their Pad Thais. Our second dish, #56 with grilled pork and vermicelli noodles, was good, but paled in comparison to their other dishes. Overall, we highly recommend this place. The service is extremely fast. The staff are all very friendly and the owner works very hard to make sure that all of her customers are happy and enjoying their orders.
