Pho is an absolute must when it comes to gloomy, cold weather. So with that in mind, pho bac ky came into mind. I didn't chose this pho place out of the blue. I had been here before and sort of knew what to expect. 1. Parking can get a little tight. It is in a strip mall that can get pretty crowded. 2. The restaurant is divided into two weird sections. It's two different rooms with a wall in between. ( kind of awkward when you need something & cant find your server) I had come into this place before and I loved it. The pho was decently priced, the msg filled broth was warm when delivered and everything was perfect. Tonight, it was a different story. I arrived at the restaurant at 7:45. I got sat in the weird awkward room where you can't see your server, at this weird too small corner table with a bright halogen light on top, which made me feel like I was in for an interrogation & not an amazing pho experience. Once the order was made, the server never came back. It was a different person each time. Aside from the service, the pho was not up to my expectation. I know, I know.... Tustin is not little Saigon, nor will it have pho that is like in little China in LA, Westminster or garden grove. However, this place had a place in my heart. On a cold night, you want piping hot broth that's just filled with a rich beef stock flavor. My broth was cold. Lukewarm if I'm going to sugarcoat it. I never could tell my server bcus I could never find her. Also, why did it lack flavor? Honestly, it tasted like they added a packet of the top ramen beef broth & then diluted that even further. I had the number 20 special. The house special. It came with rare steak, well done brisket, tendon & tripe. The meat was beyond over cooked and so tough, I couldn't even eat it. There was NO tendon to be in sound which was a superb disappointment bcus I would've wanted some meat with my noodles. Honestly? I'm disappointed. Server never came back & I had to flag the busser. I'm really disappointed in you, pho bac ky. I would send people your way if they didn't want to drive too far & now, I feel horrible I did. This is my favorite Vietnamese place. I live nearby and come here 1-2 times a week. My go to dishes are: pho #19, charbroiled pork and egg roll with rice or bun (vermicelli). The food is hands down the BEST in the area and the prices are fair. The people that work here work hard and are so kind. They may not be perfect all the time but they ALWAYS try their best to serve you best, which I very much appreciate. I will continue to make this my go-to Vietnamese place. read more

Amazing and fresh! I ordered takeout over the phone and my order was ready to go in under 30min, right on time for when I arrived. I got Pho with thin steak and tripe and it was great. I wish there was an option with meatballs and thin beef, but there is a custom option if you want to get creative. Servings are generous; I ordered the large size and it was two meals for me. The pho came amazingly packed, you can tell they take time to ensure your food gets home without making a mess and the setup made it easy to assemble at home. I love that bean sprouts, limes, basil, hoisin sauce, etc were also packed. The broth was infused with that beef taste that hits the spot and is delicious and homey. This is probably one of the best pho places I tried. I was surprised at the quality of this place. The price for a large was around $7.50 so I wasn't expecting any gigantic portions or anything amazing. The portions turned out to be way bigger than I expected. I got way more meat than you would expect for $7.50. The broth was awesome. It was rich in flavor and the noodles were tasty too, and they didn't skimp on the sides. I really couldn't see any flaw with the pho. I came to this place ravenous and I left a happy ogre. This place is beast. I would come here WAY more often if I lived a lot closer. As far as good pho places nearby go, you can't really go too wrong (most of the time). We found this place by the Stater Bros. The restaurant is actually two small units so they can accommodate plenty of people. We were quickly seated and served! I always get my special combination, but they also had a wide range of assorted menu items including broken rice. The ratio of meat to noodles was perfect, and the noodles were the perfect texture of chewy. Sometimes pho on a cold day is like a cup of warm hot chocolate by the fire place. So cozy. So perfect. Went for dinner here with my brother from out of town. It was quite busy for 7 PM on a Sunday night, There were as many non Asian groups of people as Asian families. There isn't much of an ambiance with its bright lights in the second dining room. Little kids were having food fights with their rice. The furniture is cheap, which was fine because it usually means cheap eats. And sure enough, a large pho with rare steak is $6.75 - that's what my brother ordered. I had a beef combination plate of 5 items for $8.99. My order came with a small bowl of soup, salad with vinaigrette, two kind of greasy but good egg rolls. It also comes out with fresh spring rolls with a spicy sauce which I liked. For an extra 99 cents you could get a small lemonade - normally $1.95. The rib steak beef was good, with a soft, crispy texture and well marinated. Overall, I liked it. My brother ordered the large rare steak pho, and they bring out fresh basil, bean sprouts, cilantro, and green onions. He had two complaints about the pho. The broth, though tasty, was not a clear broth which he prefers. His Vietnamese friends say if you grow up with clear broth, "dirty broth" isn't as good. But I liked it fine. He also said the rare beef wasn't too fresh. FWIW, he's probably had pho with rare steak in about a hundred places and rarely complains. Service was decent. The two waitresses weren't overly chatty or hovering. But when I made eye contact and raised my hand, she was there. Our waitress accidentally charged me $1.95 for the lemonade, which should've been 99 cents with my combo. She gladly refunded my $1.00. I left her a nice tip anyway. This past July, I was pretty much colleague-pressured into having pho twice. Co-worker asks the team if anyone wants pho, and we're like, "Are you kidding, it's like 100 degrees out?!". Long story short, 4 of us end up with phone orders, me mainly for FOMO reasons. I've dined in the restaurant twice a couple of years back, so not rating the interior and service this time since I didn't place or pick up the order. Instead, just the food. First order was 3 weeks ago. I asked for the rare steak, brisket and tripe. When I opened my order, I only got the rare steak. They messed up on my order, but the others all got their orders right. Second order was a few days ago. Co-worker mentioned to order taker on the phone about my order being wrong last time. I've heard many times that there is no great Pho restaurants in the Tustin/ Irvine area and that you must go to Westminster for good pho. Lies! There are plenty of great places in the Irvine and surround city areas. Coworkers have so many great things to say about Pho Bac Ky. So why not give it a try? I was down the street from this location and it was very easy to find parking, so I had no more excuses. My two favorite things convenient and free and easy parking (no pun intended). Cheap and good are also some of my favorite things. The food is reasonably priced and tasty. If you have a student ID you can get a further discount. So, why the lower rating? PROS: -Very easy to find parking and it was not too busy during lunch time. -a reasonable amount of customers -portions are okay (not much meat with a large pho) -pho soup is good -a lot of pictures on the menu. This is great because not everyone that eats Vietnamese restaurants can read or remember what everything looks like before ordering. -Food variety- For the non-pho eaters don't fear I saw non-asians eating here. -Student Discounts -Friendly service -Crispy egg rolls. Nobody likes soggy egg rolls. CONS: -No smiles from customers. They must not have been satisfied. -coffee and ice drinks were weak -TOO MUCH MSG!! I understand that pho without msg is like Angelia without Brad Pitt not gonna happen, but seriously there should be a legal limit to the amount of MSG that can be used in any food item. -Student Discount- I only got discounted for my bowl of pho (not the whole order). I got a percentage off of my pho, not the appetizer, my drink, and not the second order of pho for another student. I'm not complaining because I'm glad for discount but that was just odd... I was really stuck on reviewing this place and giving it a fair amount of stars. The food is good and I do think you should try it. If you are okay with MSG, forget about on the cons and give this place 4 stars. For a normal pho eater, 2 stars seems fair. My new trend is also ordering spring rolls and this time was no different. The pho tai included a fair amount of meat proportionate to the noodles. I know very little about Vietnamese cuisine, but I do know what I like -- and what I like, Pho Bac Ky gives me in large quantities. I'm speaking specifically of their value platter -- an enormous variety of food fit for a lumberjack or whatever they happen to be called in Vietnam. Each value platter comes with a choice of 'main dishes' such as skewers of beef or chicken, or pork chops or something else I can't remember because I always get the chicken, beef or pork chops. You can't go wrong with any of these, really. Each platter also comes with two fried spring rolls (There's a fish sauce for dipping, but I think the rolls are delicious dipped in a little soy sauce mixed with sambal olek, or chili garlic paste). There's also a cold spring roll -- thin rice noodles, lettuce and shrimp wrapped in rice paper (I think the peanut sauce that comes with the platter goes well with this one). There's also a cup of unbelievably tasty beef broth/soup that is probably the base for the pho dishes, but I wouldn't know because I don't do pho. This broth alone is almost worth the price of admission. There's even a little salad that has a fantastic rice vinegar-based dressing that packs a little kick. A nice contrast to the dominating beefy, fishy tastes in the other dishes. Rounding off the value platter is a generous mound of tasty yellow rice, which goes awesomely with the main dish. And here's the kicker: this little food orgy only costs $9.50, and it's worth every penny. It's just the right amount of food for those with a hearty appetite, but not too, too much so as to induce the dreaded 2:30 pm food coma. Hole in the wall spot that is fortunately very conveniently located next to my house, so I come here pretty often. A regular pho bowl for $6.45 is unbeatable, and the soup is authentic and tasty. The spring rolls are also really good, but they are $4.99 and only come with 2 full rolls. The noodles are sometimes overcooked but that's not a big deal to me. The service has always been good but sometimes I have to ask multiple times to get extra lime and cilantro. Enter Pho Bac Ky in Tustin. Its in the Stater Bros Shopping center close to the 5 freeway on Red Hill. The first thing I noticed was the owner greeting me. He was so friendly and you could tell so appreciative we came in. Always a huge smile on his face. He will never be as cool and hip as my previous Pho owner, but his friendliness really stood out. The interior is clean and neat but a little small. Nothing really memorable. At my old pho place it was very spacious. There would usually be cool alternative music playing or 2 TV's to watch. This place closes at 8:30 pm and at 8:30 it was 3/4's full. My old place had a much better condiment selection. Pho Bac Ky is missing some of the things I loved. Satay sauce for one. They had a paste in a jar that looked like it, but it was really some sort of chili paste in oil. It wasn't very hot and sweet in taste. It wasn't bad. Maybe it was satay, but it tasted nothing like what I was used to. They also were missing the ground red chili paste with Garlic. On the plus side they had the Chinese pepper (white pepper I believe) instead of the regular pepper at my old pho place. I have a fetish about condiments at Pho places for some reason and most places are always missing the satay, chili garlic paste, and the saw leaf herb! The spring rolls were incredibly average. Not as good as my old place. They lacked depth and complexity of flavor.Other places had the "pink mystery meat" in it and this only had some veggies, shrimp, vermicelli. The wrapper was soft and tasty. I found 2 shrimp kind of chintzy as well. The sauce did not have the peanuty flavor I loved and was kind of strong and salty. I probably will not order this again. I saw another table get some fried egg rolls and those looked really good. I ordered the Pho with rare beef, tendon, tripe, and brisket. The veggies you get are slice jalepenos, bean sprouts, cilantro, and basil. I miss the saw leaf (Gai) herb. It seems like very few places have it outside of Little Saigon. But the Pho was AWESOME. The noodles were firm yet tender and had a great flavor to them. The meat was very tender and flavorful. The tripe was tender yet crunchy. The tendons were like beefy soft gummi bears (without the sweetness of course). You could taste the complexity of the broth. The anise, the beef, the slight sweetness. It was some of the best broth I have had. It also had a great "mouth feel" I don't know how else to describe it. When it went into my mouth it felt like it almost would vaporize in my mouth and release all its flavors. Then it would slide down my throat in a silky way. I drank the broth so the bowl was completely dry. My chick had the Chicken Pho which uses chicken stock instead of beef. I tried that as well. I could swear there were wisps of ginger. Very chickeny flavor in the broth. And the chicken is pulled from the bone as opposed to pre processed chicken. Finally we ordered some drinks. Cafe Su Da and a blended Lychee drink with Boba. Intense coffee flavor. Not just strong, but flavorful. You can almost taste chocolate under tones, but I know they don't add chocolate. Very creamy and a little thicker than most Cafe Su Da's. This is why I give it the edge. Great great great drink. They have it listed as French Expresso or something like that The Lychee drink wasn't that good. Too sweet and I don't know why its red. The boba's were very mushy and the drink separated (ice from the liquid) almost right way. At my old place, they were nice and thick and the ice was blended so smoothly it was like drinking a milkshake Total price for 2 bowls of Pho, Spring Rolls , Cafe Su Da, and the Lychee drink was $24.00. I found this to be a tad bit expensive. However the good far outweighs the minuses here. Its convenient and I really liked how the owner was so friendly. Service was fast and efficient and cheerful. And the Pho is spectacular. For these reasons, this will probably be our new regular place. I wish it would open later than 8:30 pm though. read more

Although this place serves some mean ol' good pho, I have an issue with the cleanliness. When I came here last week, there was this gigantic cockroach. I'm assuming "TheChef K." is Korean, so therefore he really doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm Vietnamese and have actually eaten Pho in Vietnam, twice! I think this place makes a better bowl of Pho than what I ate in Saigon. I always try to take my friends here, especially if they're really poor. They love the Happy Hour $3.99 bowl of "Pho Tai", which is pho with rare beef. It's incredibly filling and really tasty. I've tried lots of the other dishes too, and my favorites include "Com tam bi cha suon nuong" (Jullienne pork, egg quiche and charbroiled pork chop) and "Com bo luc lac" (Filet mignon with a variation of garlic butter rice - SO GOOD!). The drinks are also pretty amazing here. Make sure to try out the smoothies. If you're adventurous enough, try either "The Black Sea" or avocado smoothie. You won't regret it!
