As a person who was spoiled by Vietnamese cuisine in Little Saigon and actual Saigon, I've had a hard time in Rockford. I saw pho 815 and was immediately hopeful. Had to give it a shot. Staff and service are great. Restaurant is nice, loved the Vietnamese easy listening music. Made me feel at home. That's where the positives ended. I have never seen Vietnamese food cost so much and I've eaten in bougie Vietnamese Fusion places in Irvine and DTLA. This in itself isn't enough to take away stars, but the rest is. I ignored the prices and ordered a ton of food for takeout. Spring rolls, shrimp rolls, all 3 sandwiches on the menu, and the Bun Tom Thit Nuong. When I got there, I found out that they were running out of bread...actually, running out of everything. More on that later. To be fair, they did try to call me back but I'm the only person in Rockford that doesn't use their phone while driving and I intend to keep it that way. It's unacceptable that the person who took my order didn't know what they had. It's even more unacceptable that they ran out of bread. It's like running out of rice. I feel like par levels are crucial to a restaurant. Anyway, fine. Instead of three sandwiches, I'll have just the Banh Mi Dac Biet and replace the other two with specialty Pho. Just a pro tip, everything I ordered are good indicators as to whether a Vietnamese restaurant is legit or not. They are staples. Now, on to the actual food. The Spring Rolls and shrimp rolls are perfectly fine. Not the freshest, but perfectly acceptable. Approved. The sandwich was a travesty. First of all, never slice the bread all the way through. We don't do that. It keeps the sandwich from falling apart (i mean there's shredded pickled veggies). Too much soy sauce, not enough butter and I could barely see the cold cuts. paying $8 for this felt like robbery. Eating this sandwich made me want to fly to Westminster, CA for Banh Mi Cali. The Bun Tom Thit Nuong had me conflicted. The grilled shrimp and the egg rolls were delicious. The grilled meat tasted more Korean than Vietnamese. I love Korean food, but not when I want Vietnamese. The veggies were not fresh and the noodles actually didn't make it through the night in the fridge. The dish tasted spoiled the next day, which again raises concern about freshness. Finally, on to the Pho. This dish is the namesake of the restaurant and is the poster child of Vietnamese cuisine. It was a sin against my ancestors. It was super fragrant and aromatic. Had me drooling on the way home. However, the broth was bland and tasteless. I added the hoisin sauce and Sriracha and that's all I could taste. I have suspicions of how the broth was prepared but I won't speculate without proof. I just wish I had a bag of MSG to empty into the broth. The tripe in Vietnamese food is usually delicately sliced and cooked longer until soft. This might be a matter of preference though. I did find the meatballs delicious. The beef good as well. Overall, I cannot justify coming back. There are non-vietnamese asian restaurants that serve better Vietnamese food. That makes me sad. read more

Ordered some beef pho for the first time. I am very impressed. Beef quality was about a 7.5/10. The broth was a 9/10. The side veggies were a 10/10. The noodles were a 8.5/10. So over all pretty good especially for the price. It was nicely packaged as well. All was well with the appetizers until we received our main order. We ordered two W1 (umami-laden broth) and quite frankly it reeked of latex, and odors of worse nature... When brought to the attention of the waitress, she at first refused to take the order back... seemingly because of how the chef would respond to her. Once she agreed, the chef came out to our table and glared at us. We were refused a refund for the two pho orders ($40). I asked if we could have at least one of them comped, as we had only touched the food to confirm it tasted as bad as it smelled... but the waitress refused. She apologized after the fact. I was visiting family in Rockford for the holidays and I have been extremely disappointed with the food I've had thus far on my trip. The food disappointment ended here at the Pho 815. This place is legit Vietnamese restaurant that delivered a much needed tasty meal. We came here for lunch and were greeted with a smile and great service. I ordered the BBQ Banh Mi with all of the garnishing, and is was awesome. Everything was proper, the bread roll had a crunchy exterior with a soft interior, which is a must for a perfect Banh Mi sandwich. The pork was tender with proper flavor and portion. The pickled veggies and cilantro topped it all off. The restaurant decor was modern with a touch of Vietnamese art throughout. Very clean as well. My go to place when I am in Rockford for work. I like their selection of Pho, Boba flavors, and Mi Bo Ko. Hidden off the main highway, I think this little gem is overlooked by the passerby. Never super busy, which is odd for how good the food is. Prices aren't super expensive and the servings are ample. I've had the worst experience ever at this place. First off, the broth is absolutely flavorless in the pho, the service is absolutely horrible and along with that they do not do their due diligence to keep out loiters. We ordered two beef, pho, crab Rangoon, and sodas. Our waitress constantly kept forgetting to check in on us, and at the end, she forgot our Tupperware times, and made us sit 15 to 20 minutes before we could even get the bill. I have been here twice, the first time I showed up they had run out of noodles, kind of a critical ingredient. So I didn't have anything at that time. I did go the other day and the experience was less than satisfactory. The appetizers were OK, nothing special. I ordered a bowl of pho-the first bowl they brought me was ice cold. I'm not sure what they did, it felt like they brought it from the freezer. It was warmer on the edges, ice cold in the middle. I couldn't eat it. I requested another bowl, and it was lukewarm this time, not hot. And honestly, it's just not all that good. I'm not sure what they're doing here, but I don't know how they staying in business. I have been coming here very regularly for the last couple of years, pretty regular customer, but I'm not sure what's going on, whether management has changed within the last couple of months, but the food tastes different and visually isn't consistent. This is the third time that I've ordered these rolls and I opened the box and this is how they were all broken and you can imagine with all the stuffing in it how messy it becomes to eat if they're not rolled up tightly. The part that I found the most off-putting was that, although the restaurant closes at 830, the waitress put all of the chairs upside down on top of the tables at 630. We were traveling through Rockford on Labor Day and called to see if Pho 815 was open. A woman answered and said they were. I asked how late and she said, until 4:30 or 5. Great! We got there at 3:30 and were told right when we walked in that they were closed at 3:30. We had just driven 5 hours and were bummed, as we were told they would be open later. The owner was very gracious and allowed us to place a to-go order. However, I ordered chicken spring rolls and was very, very clear that we could not eat shrimp or pork and was very disappointed to get to our hotel and find shrimp in the spring rolls. :( Because the restaurant was then closed this error could not be corrected or refunded. :( Overall, I thought the pho broth was too sweet. It seems it had a lot of sugar added. But the ingredients were otherwise fresh and I do appreciate the owner trying to accommodate us despite closing early. Pho 815, first timers experience was okay. We had the pho dac biet , bun mi dac biet, and chow mein fun which had all the meats to go recently. The pho dac biet had a good portion size and was well seasoned before adding any additional sauces. But not as much meat. The bun mi dac biet sandwich flavors were on point and bread was crunchy however flat and not round when I've had over french baguettes. And lastly, the chow mein fun was sadly, unflavorful for us it was bland and was lacking on seasoning, but it looked nice. The ambience at Pho 815 was modern and clean. read more

We knew that going to a restaurant on opening day in Rockford wouldn't go too well, but we took the risk & made the mistake anyways. We went with a bunch of friends around dinner time. I'd say around 6ish. Upon arrival, I noticed some friends there eating & a few empty tables. I believe it was one of the owners, but he approached us & I let him know we were waiting for 1 more friend, so they didn't have to seat us right away. I was getting a big nervous waiting for my friend to come, because more & more people kept coming & the seats started to fill up quickly. As we waited, the first thing I noticed was their nice modern decor. It is clean & presentable. The second thing I noticed was that it was so humid/hot in there! I'm not sure what was going on with their AC system, or was it because the kitchen area is open to the main area, or was it because a majority of the customers were eating hot pho in the middle of summer. Another thought that came across me while waiting, was that it would be nice if they had a bench or just chairs up by the entrance so we could sit while waiting. When we finally got seated, we ordered our apps & main dishes. We were told by our server the apps would take around 30 mins & the main dishes, about an hour. Much longer than I expected to wait, but at least they gave us the courtesy & let us know before hand. The menu is limited, but I'm sure after some time, they will add more to it to see what sells. Overall, the chicken appetizers were good, the presentation threw me off because it had 2 pieces of part of the head lettuce. The Spring rolls were good & I had a bite of an egg roll, which I wasn't really a fan of. For my main dish, I ordered the combination pho with the round eye steak on the side as I didn't want it overdone. The pho broth was delicious! It was flavorful & tasted even better when I added other seasonings to it. The reason for the 3 star was the environment we were in was uncomfortable due to the heat, the wait time for food, we also had to keep asking our server for more water, rather than her just noticing & refilling it herself, & we also had to ask her for napkins. I get it was opening day, but each server had their own sections to serve, which was doable. Again, food was great & I would be back. I'll be happy to update my review then to reflect my most recent visit. I am just hoping by my next visit, these minor hiccups will be fixed. The owners did great for bringing this to the community.
