Tank Noodle... you have met your match. Jacob Y., my dude Dave S. and myself were looking for a post-drinking night pho gorge. While looking for parking, we noticed Tank (our usual go-to) was slammed. As always. So we decided to try somewhere else. Pho 888 was a bomb so we figured we'd go with lucky 777. Daaaaaamn are we glad we did! I'm tempted to say this is my new favorite pho. I need to eat there a few more time before I decide this conclusively but it's certainly looking that way. Their prices are very similar to Tank but you get more for your buck. Extra meatballs in pho is only $1 and you get a ton! The broth is rich and flavorful... so fragrant! It smells like happy in this restaurant. The appetizers left a little bit to be desired. The grilled meatball spring roll was YUM but I've had much better shrimp spring rolls... and that's my favorite of the Vietnamese appetizers. After a heavy night of drinking the previous night, we ventured out here via the 36 struggle bus to get our recovery on. Triple seven did not disappoint! I went with my usual beef and beef gummy bear (AKA beef tendon) and this place really hit the spot. I would say not the best pho I've ever had, as for me the flavor of the broth was mild and not as rich as some I've had in the past. But the ingredients were pretty fresh and gave it the nice flavor I was looking for. Service is minimal, but then again I've never been to a pho place that pampered you from the moment you sat down. Oh yeah, did I mention this place is BYOB? Recovery mode was on for me at the time of visit but definitely something worth noting. Til next time, cheers! read more

Argle street has plenty of Asian restaurants and i was craving Viet food. On a Sunday for early dinner, we luckily found meter parking in front of the restaurant. As we entered, my daughter noticed the large fish tank with one big fish. We were seated 2 tables away from the fish tank so my daughter could admire the view. A red cushion coverbook covers the menu, and have plenty of selections! I was initially disappointed that the establishment ran out of the soursop fruit to make bubble tea with tapioca. (Soursop is a fruit of the annona muricata, a small evergreen tree. Its flesh is soft, white and pulpish, with a sour citrus flavour that is also slightly creamy.) So i ordered one with Durian fruit (This fruit is revered in Southeast Asia as the King of Fruits. The thorn covered husk along with its pungent odour is the hallmark of the durian.) I was satisfied with the drink, it smells like fart, but tastes so good! Hopefully next time the soursop fruit will be available for order, otherwise take it off the menu! I'm not an expert of Viet food and i stick to the basics--either sandwich section or vermicelli section. Vermicelli always come with white noodles and fresh veggies to the side and broth in a bowl. I ordered the grilled pork one; i love how the pork was slightly burnt and the broth was spicy enough to clear my sinus cavity and flavorful enough that i enjoyed my meal. It also came with pork eggroll to my meal. I did order 4 pieces of pork eggrolls and chicken fried rice for my daughter in case she wasn't in trying new foods. Well, my daughter craved only for chicken fried rice and that satisfied her. We had plenty of leftovers. Employee spoke english well, though have an accent and had to repeat my order. Service was slow, yet worth the wait. If my memory serves me right, the red walls with candles on the tabletops for dinner wouldve made a great ambiance. I did like how the soup spoons and chopsticks were neatly laid out in the condiments box on top of the table though. 5 stars for me if i couldve gotten that soursop bubble tea with tapioca as my first choice. I went here with my sister for our first time having Vietnamese food. The menu was intimidating to say the least, we really didn't know what to order. We were seated immediately and given water, after 30 minutes someone came back to take our order. When we started to order she cut us off for each item, not letting us finish our sentence and when we asked what a picture of an item was on the menu, she barked back "You can get whatever! Chicken?! Beef?! What do you want?!" I tried to ask her again what the picture was because there was definitely a language barrier, but she just kept saying you can get whatever. So we just told her beef of whatever the picture was so that she would stop yelling at us. We got our food, the only utensils we had were the soup spoons and chopsticks at the table. They never gave us silverware and they never came back to check on us. They had the silverware, because we saw others patrons with forks and knifes. My sister and I were splitting a huge bowl of Pho and they did not give us another bowl so we both had to lean across the table to share. As mentioned before they never came back to the table to ask us if we needed anything. I ended up eating from the tiny sauce dish and my sister used the serving spoon to eat. I just shoveled my food into my mouth with the chopsticks. There was a point when we caught the guy clearing the tables and asked him for a straw, we thought that was a simple request. We never got those straws. Now this was our experience dining in, but I do have to say that the food was delicious and I highly recommend it... if you get it to go!! Take out all the way. Inexpensive and delicious pho spot. This place came highly recommended by our friend who lives nearby and it did NOT disappoint. It's not fancy inside, but don't let that keep you from allowing your taste buds to experience the joy from the kitchen. We placed two orders for pho bo, one order for pho ray cai, and one for tai bo vien. All four bowls were served at the same time and steaming hot. As we were reviewing the menu, we noticed numerous dishes that contained tripe. That started a conversation about how none of us realized tripe is so common in Vietnamese cooking. (And NONE of us were brave enough to try any of the dishes where tripe was an ingredient.) Our table was right below a newspaper article on the wall that had an accompanying photo of Barack Obama and Anthony Bourdain sharing a meal. Naturally, we first assumed that we chose the table that they once shared and we became super excited. Then we read the article only to learn that the photo was taken in Vietnam, not Pho 777. I used to come here with my dad when I was a kid all the time for the pho. I haven't had it in over 10 years! I traded to Tank, but I should try it again. My problem is the bubble tea! I ended up in Argyle Wednesday craving a strawberry bubble tea and Tank is closed on Wednesdays, so I thought I would see what other shops are available. I end up at 777. I walk in and order the strawberry bubble tea and you can see the sweet lady come out the kitchen from getting the ingredients and she brings out a gallon of whole milk along with fresh strawberries, so it was a strawberry milk smoothie - I am used to only strawberries and syrup and ice. It was just nasty. Also, not vegan friendly without notice since the cows whole milk... I'm not vegan - just saying. You can see a photo of the smoothie. It is supposed to be a deep red color, but it's pink since it's mixed with milk. I've never experienced this type of bubble tea before. Restaurant Review Pho vs. Pho! I finally decided to break tradition and move over to Pho 777 for a Pho experience instead of Tank Pho. I was not disappointed with the combination pho which had pork balls, thinly slice meat, brisket, tendon, and more. The soup was well balance and clear with hints of anise, cinnamon, and fish sauce. Pho 777 is a pretty good option for pho in Argyle. It's definitely less busy than Tank Noodle for example, which is nice if you want pho fast. My friend introduced me to banh xeo, a Vietnamese pancake stuffed with bean sprouts, shrimp, and pork belly, served with a sauce. Would recommend if you want to deviate from the typical spring rolls appetizer. -- 5/5 I got pho with a lot of different proteins (honestly don't remember which ones). First, the broth is really good, more flavorful than the typical pho broth in my opinion. I usually add a bit of hoisin and sriracha to my soups but did not find it necessary here. My criticism is that the proteins were kind of hit or miss. The beef was excellent, tender and flavorful. However, the tendons, tripe, and other connective tissue type proteins were all too firm, like they weren't cooked long enough. Next time I will just stick with steak/brisket. -- 3.5/5 read more

Prompt service and a hot bowl of Pho with a savory rich broth that was not to sweet nor salty. Fresh and abundant basil, lime, jalapeno and beansprouts white crisp not old and brown. This restaurant is definitely no frills - just a casual place to grab a delicious bowl of Pho. It appears to be family owned, and the people working there were quite kind and attentive. I noticed that some people complained about the service, and maybe the family gets a bit over whelmed when it is a big crowd - there wasn't a ton of help to serve folks but I was there on a Thursday night. The food is traditional and quite tasty; if you don't like tripe or tendon avoid the first few Pho option and look further down the list for the brisket and other options. My personal recommendations include: 1) Bun dau mam tom- a platter of deep fried silky tofu, pork belly, rice vermicelli and veggie served with signature shrimp paste. I love this place because they make really good and authentic Bún Bò Hu. Many places will make it Southern style because that's from where most immigrants come, but the dish originates from Central Vietnam which has a unique food culture in its own right. The Southern style incorporates chili pepper powder and extra chili oil, which ruins the broth before you get the chance to try it. I'm not a broth purist (add sriracha and hoisin to your soup idc) but an excess of oil and cough-triggering chili powder is objectively not better. Pho 777 makes the broth broth so flavorful. Ask for porks blood if you like that stuff. Not sure if they have mm ruc (small shrimp paste) to go with it though. Plus I've always been happy with my service here! read more

Wonderful unexpected stop for tasty Vietnamese dinner. Everything was tasty and served hot. Things were a little greasy and sometimes lacked full flavor. The Hoisin sauce container was a mess and over all, not the cleanest spot. Service is spotty but being mindful this is a mom and pop family business, we did love it. The Bánh Xèo was fabulous. We pre-ordered 2 large roasted catfish for a party of 6. It was decent, nothing extraordinary. The fish was over-fried and not very flavorful. I will commend them on offering this dish on the menu, as most Vietnamese restaurants will not offer roasted catfish spring rolls as it is time-consuming to cook and prepare. You could tell that the servers and staff were treating us nicely because we were ordering expensive entrees, but we saw them treat other customers poorly. We also saw the manager/owner barking orders at the staff at the front counter and throughout the restaurant. Parking in Argyle is crazy regardless of where you go, but there are some lots with paid parking that have plenty of spots. I don't think that I will be coming back here anytime soon. read more

Pho 777 is one of my favorite restaurants on Argyle. Many people enjoy Argyle for the same 3 items- pho, banh mi and spring rolls. Although these are delicious, there is so much more to try when we're talking Vietnamese food. Here, they specialize in Northern Vietnamese dishes. Bun Ca (fish cake noodle soup with dill and tomato) and Bun Cha Ca La Vong (turmeric grilled fish with Dill) are my absolute favorites from here. Also, I love how crispy and tasty the Banh Xeo (stuffed rice pancake) is! I recommend going here with a few friends, stopping by foremost liquors (1/2 block away) to grab some alcoholic libations, ordering multiple things off the menu and sharing! read more

I have eaten at many Viet restaurants on Argyle in Chicago. There area couple that have tings that I like better than 777 but as far as Spring Rolls go, they are the best. The rolls are very tight and tasty. They have 3 kinds shrimp and pork, shrimp and then just pork. They have some of the best peanut sauces that I have ever had. That gives them 5 stars from me. The menu is several pages long and the food was very good. There are only two that I can think of that have better décor and not much better at that. I go for the food and I was very satisfied. The price was pretty much the same as their neighbors. It is well worth a visit and if you love Spring rolls , several visits. read more

Since my last review they now offer papaya salad! Yipee!!!! I have been here twice since my last review and that salad is OUTSTANDING!! Sour and hot. Watch out for the spicyness. I ordered the pho which I thought was good. The flank steak was perfect. My friend ordered one of the cold noodles in shrimp paste soup. He said it was even better than the usual Vietnamese place he goes to in New York! My other friends had never tried Vietnamese food and were really impressed with all the food we ordered from here. Finally The AW has had Pho!!!! After drinking a couple of beverages @ McCormick & Schmicks myself, Cassidy P & An P (no relation) decided it was time to eat. We drove Uptown to hit up Pho 777. An was the expert here telling me to go the safe route and get the #1 which was a beef broth along with beef and vegetables inside of it. I went with the small portion which was huge! An told me to add some sriracha to enhance the flavor, but I think I added too much because my broth went from brown to red. Mmmmm...spicy! We started my Vietnamese ethnic food tour with a Vietnamese lunch at Pho 777 (a personal favorite). Here, we feasted on a family style meal including the following Vietnamese dishes: Cahn Chua Ca (Hay Tom) - Choice of catfish or jumbo shrimp cooked in tamarind and lemon-leaf flavored broth Goi Ca- Slices of cucumber, celery, shredded carrots, and mint combined with thin slices of white fish fillet and topped with a sweet & sour dressing, caramelized shallots and crushed peanuts. This review is 2.5 Maybe we were there during a bad day, but we were not that impressed by the food. We had the shrimp spring rolls to start and the filling was mostly noodles and there were not enough herbs. They were kind of bland and not as good as at other places. My husband's pho was decent, but he said the broth seemed a little watered down and the meat was tough. He did appreciate that the beef balls appeared to be home made. The portions were large but smaller than at other places around this area. Another couple that was seated near us ordered the egg rolls and we heard them tell the waiter the egg rolls were cold. There was a very large party there that day and the wait staff seemed swamped, so it is possible that the restaurant was just having an off day. However, with so many other great Vietnamese spots in this area, we will probably just go somewhere else next time. To be fair though, we got the combinate pork rice plate to go and my husband said that it was very tasty. read more

The food here at pho 777 is phonomenal. Service is pretty much nonexistent so if you want great food and have low expectations coming into this place when it comes to service then you will have a great time here. Their menu is very extensive. My boyfriend and I came here on a Sunday at noon and there were a few open tables. The establishment is pretty small. We shared the banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts) and it was unphogettable. It was huge and they were generous with the fillings and it was hot and crispy and flavorful. Probably one of the best banh xeo I've ever had. The pho was good. Bowls are huge and they are generous with the meat. It comes out piping hot and perfect for a cold day. I had the pho with round steak and meatballs. The round steak was cooked nicely and it tasted fresh. I wasn't a fan of the meatballs though. I came to appreciate Vietnamese food now because of this place. And let me explain myself a bit: growing up, I was under the very wrong impression that Vietnamese food was bland or too fresh. It wasn't very fair of me to say this, of course, because the only exposure to Vietnamese food I ever had were spring rolls and the Korean imitation of pho. Yet, I stubbornly kept this view, until now. The pho was so flavorful, and just perfect for the cold weather. Although I've tasted pho, or faux, before, in the Korean pho chain, Pho 32, this was a confirmation that I have never really tried pho, or any real Vietnamese food for that matter. I enjoyed the ambiance of Pho 777, and you definitely knew you were in a genuine Vietnamese restaurant, as opposed to a Chinese or Korean run Vietnamese restaurant. For my last night in Chicago, I wanted to eat a very cozy dinner, preferably soup of some sort. Once again, Yelp came to the rescue. This place had over 300 reviews and a very good overall rating. It was close to where I was staying so definitely went with this place! First off, make sure you look out for the place. There are so many other Pho restaurants, it's hard to distinguish which one is which. We had all of our food to go so I can't really say much about the location, although I know the hostess station seemed pretty oddly placed in the middle of the restaurant. You have to walk past guests and tables in order to pay for your take out. The staff was nice, very attentive. Almost expected us to know what our total was prior to arriving! For dinner, I got a couple of options. First, I got that the Chine Ve Gion pho, well done brisket and skirt flank for $6.95. This pho was a beef noodle soup, served sides of bean sprouts, basil leaves and lime. The soup was so flavorful! Filled with strips of meat and sooo good! I loved it so much. What a perfect soup for a cold evening. I also got the Com Tam Suon dish, steamed rice with grilled pork chop & vegetables for $7.50. It was literally marinated and grilled pork chops over rice and served with the sweet chili and shrimp dipping sauce. Also served with Kim Chee, tomatoes and cucumbers. The pork chops were so sweet and flavorful! Packed with flavor. Man, it was savory but had a sweet hint and really made the dish. I really liked this dish a lot! Highly recommend. Overall, great experience at Pho 777! Definitely a great Vietnamese choice. I will definitely recommend this place to others in the area. I will also be back on my next trip to Chicago!! read more
