Pho 76! If you find yourself in this small town I can only think of one reason and that's because of family. I come here at least once a year to visit my family and after a night of drinking and silly dance moves the next morning I'm looking for a cure for my hangover and Pho 76 is on my mind. Atmosphere: The restaurant is plain and simply with an oddly red floor, but I don't care about that. I care about the friendly staff and the quick food that comes out to cure my hangover and that's what exactly they do here. There's a oriental store that is connected to the restaurant which is own by he same owner so quickly grab something to drink or snack on while you wait for your food. Food: Spring Roll - Simply amazing. Lots of meat and flavorful peanut/hoisin sauce. Egg Roll - Crispy wrap with lots of meat and flavorful chili fish sauce. Some people serve egg rolls with sweat and sour sauce...I don't like it, it has to be the chili fish sauce! Pho- I'm a fan of their pho here! Not a lot of spice flavor in the broth like I usually like it but it's pretty good. Light broth, not too beefy with lots of herbs on the side. They are very generous with the meat as well. Tip: * Everyone likes their pho differently. This isn't the best pho I've had but it's darn good. My first Pho experience. Basically a nice flavored broth soup with noodles, beef, and meatballs. It was quite tasty. Also had the vermicelli salad with beef, this came with a sweet dripping sauce. This was good to I like the soup better. For appetizer I had the spring rolls. Highly recommend the spring rolls they were my favorite part of the meal. In a shopping center. Vietnamese food! Yes I was very excited, I moved from CA to the Midwest a few years back and have been living a meager existence without Vietnamese food. I happened to be in Wausau for work and saw that this little sleepy town had a Vietnamese restaurant tucked into a nondescript strip mall. This restaurant lacks a lot in way of decor but there were a handful of people in there enjoying Pho on a cold winter night, so how could I resist. The menu was limited but they had everything I was looking for, spring rolls and vermicelli noodles with pork. Was it the best Vietnamese I have ever had? No. Was it good enough to satisfy my hunger? Yes. Would I go back? Yes. I found the food to be plentiful and flavorful, give it a shot you might just find out you like something you didn't know about. read more

While the location, and facilities, are lacking; the food is not. Excellent! We bring a group of 8-10 employees here and it's always good. However don't expect it to be fast. I think there's one person in the kitchen or something. Expect lunch there to be a solid hour from ordering to going back to work. But it's worth it occassionally. read more

Was very surprised to find a great pho restaurant in wasau while we were up for a ski weekend. Great change of pace from the usual middle of Wisconsin chain food and Italian restaurants. Let me start by saying I've had Pho, Coast to Coast. Sat down and ordered Green Papaya Salad, Spring Roll, and Pho. Rice noodles in the Spring Roll were very soft, and something was hard so I started to dissect and noticed the pork just looked weird. It kinda tasted like deli turkey. Then I went to wash my hands and was APPALLED by the condition of the bathrooms. There was feces around the toiled bowl clear in plain site...I didnt even use it after seeing that. The toilet paper ring was empty and roll was sitting on the toilet. Soap dispenser was empty and there was a bottle of soap on the dirty counters, as well the paper towels were not in a dispenser, sitting on the dirty counters! Washed my hands and back to the table. When I sat back down the Pho accompaniments were on a plate. Much of the sprouts were slimy and wet, the entire sprig of basil was on the wilted side, spotted all over with brown spots and the jalapeno seemed dry. The table condiments were sticky with fuzz. I was SO GROSSED OUT! I asked to talk to the manager, and I explained the situation. And was told "Well you have to pay" Fine....$16 was worth saving myself possible food poisoning. Left with a table full of untouched lunch. I would never step foot back in that establishment. If the front, and bathrooms are so neglected and dirty I can only imagine what the back of the house looks like. Scary! Beware! ....after the shocking attitude and lack of compassion from their manager I decided to take photos of what I experienced in their bathroom conditions and dirty condiments. read more

We took a 5 minute drive from Granite Peak ski resort to try this place out, and were not disappointed - value for money at this place is great. I ate the Seafood Pho. It was delicious but had too much noodles and too few vegetables. Ask the waiter to see the bowl size. This meal is relatively huge, and is a main course, not the average soup you would expect. I also got the spring roll, which was OK. I was surprised it was served cold, but that's just me. The restaurant furniture and settings is probably as cheap as it gets, so this isn't a place for a business meeting or any sort of meeting besides getting a really good meal for less than $10. Great prices and large amount of food. The beef, meatball, tendon pho was good, we are used to a little more of the spices, like at Hmong Eggroll. Still very good. I stopped for take-out on my lunch break and got the chicken pho. I had dined in at Pho 76 a couple of times in the past. My takeout order was ready in less than 15 minutes even though the place was packed. This restaurant is joined with a grocery store so I was able to pick up a few things there while I was waiting. The chicken pho was delicious and they did a great job of packing it to go, separating the broth from the rest of the stuff to keep it fresh. Luckily I had a nice large bowl to combine it in at my office because both of the take out containers were completely full. The portions are generous and the prices extremely reasonalble (w/ tax my order came to just $5.22). I must say, this is my "Heaven On Earth"! I love Pho and this is by far, the best place to eat it. I've been to many pho establishments in neighboring towns and states... and have always come back here. The restaurant is attached to an Asian Grocery Store, in fact they are owned by the same owners it seems. The place is a bit small and divey with 10 tables at most with 4 chairs per table. This place is great during weekday lunch time, but horrible during the weekends and weekday peak hours of 4-6 PM due to limited seating. If you happen to walk up to the door and notice a line of 4 or more people, come back in 40 minutes. The restaurant's main dish is Pho and there are about 6 options and 4 bowl sizes. I normally get the Extra Large Pho Combo with extra Tendon. This gives me a very large bowl of Pho with a generous amount of trip, flank steak, beef meat balls, crab meat balls, shrimp, tripe, tendon, steak, and octopus. The broth is not too sweet, but yet has that tad bit of acidic taste to it. I personally think that the broth handles itself pretty well without the need to add any other additives, except for saracha and fish sauce. There is usually one waiter, who takes your orders quickly. There is on average 2-3 people in the kitchen, so you will get your food very quickly. The appetizers are either two eggrolls (home made), two spring rolls (white with shrimp & beef), or the combo, which is two eggrolls and one spring roll. This restaurant is not open on Monday and is closed at 7:00 PM, so other than that, they are open and do receive a lot of business. My only gripe about this place is the fact that there is limited seating. Sure the walls could use some work and the place isn't well decorated to set the mood... but that's the least of my worries since the Pho is so good. I highly recommend this place, but don't go with any groups larger than 4 or expect to wait for a while. read more

I was in the mood for a nice bowl of Pho. I walked into the place after the lunch rush, and there seemed to be one person doing all the front-of-house work: taking orders, running food, working the register, fielding take-out orders, etc., etc. He was doing his best, but it did take quite some time to get food ordered. Now, I am as into a dive-y food joint as the next person--in fact, some of my favorite places have been some of the diviest. But cleanliness is another matter. Oh my. As I sat at my table waiting for my food, I wondered when the walls had last been cleaned. Those lovely white walls show all the food splashes to such great advantage, you know? Not appetizing at all. I ordered the #1 pho. I thought the broth was bland--even after loading it up with all the fixings and a giant squirt of Sri Racha. Standout: the eye of round was very good. The portions are also HUGE: I ordered the third largest size, and it was still WAY too much for me to eat. But the bottom line is that I've had better. So if I take the entire experience into account, I'd have to give this place a resounding "Meh." read more

Hidden in a strip mall/neighborhood, I was glad I had navigation from my hotel! I love the Vietnamese rice noodles with beef, veggies, and that yummy fish/sweet sauce! I visited from out of town and was looking for something I could pick up and take back to my room! The flavor was good, but too many noodles and not enough veggies! During a recent visit at Aspirus hospital, my siblings and I were looking for something hot, inexpensive, and tasty. When I saw "Pho" with 4 stars nearby, I decided to treat my sibs to a new experience. I regularly go out for Pho in the DC area and I have eaten at dozens of Pho places over the years, but I didn't have very high expectations for good Pho in central Wisconsin. I was pleasantly surprised! It wasn't the best Pho of all time, but it was VERY good. I had my usual (eye of round and tripe), while my brother had meatball and my sister had just eye of round. Most Pho places have 2-3 sizes, but this one had FOUR. Their extra large is WAY bigger than any other Pho I've had. It was like eating a vat of soup! I had the large and could not finish it. The broth was very flavorful, although not exquisite. The ingredients were spot on. The bean sprouts were fresh, as was the thai basil, jalapeños, lime, cilantro, thinly sliced onion, etc. Service was prompt and friendly. Atmosphere was plain, but clean. The price was excellent. This place is definitely off the beaten path. I would have never found it without Yelp. If I lived in the area, I would definitely become a frequent customer. read more

The food here is fantastic! I come here to get my Vietnamese fix. The Pho small size is like a regular, regular is large, etc. It comes with basil, jalapenos, lime, and beansprouts on the side. The spring rolls are the perfect size. They are filled with noodles, lots of meat, shrimp, cilantro, and lettuce. They come with some peanut sauce you can dip them in too. The egg rolls are to die for! Tasty goodness unlike the nasty ones you find at Chinese food places. Everything on their neat compact little menu is very reasonably priced. People may whine about how its just a lunch room with no furnishings. Get over it. You're there for the food. Go to a theater if you want entertainment and eye candy. Best place in town for pho. We get take out almost every week and they are never more than 15-20 minutes. Tables were full this week and somehow we didn't get acknowledged for 20 minutes and then were told another 20 minutes for 2 large chicken pho and egg rolls for takeout we had called ahead for. The food was decent. Their egg rolls were good. Pho was OK. Probably the best pho within a 100 mile radius of Wausau. I've been there three times in the last year while passing through town. My first experience was OK, but my last was very disappointing. Will probably not stop by any more. There's only like 3 places for pho in Wausau and it so happens they are the better of the 3. They're located in a small strip mall that is in the middle of a residential area (Wausau has their zoning all f'd up). There's barely any parking and they're located at the end of an Asian store. It looks like they just rented some closet space from the Asian store and opened up shop. They share the bathrooms with the Asian store. They could be owned by one owner, but I don't know for sure. Oh, and the bathrooms stank. The place is small. It's not good for large groups, but you know Asians, they like to eat in big groups (I hate eating in big groups with Asians, no one helps tip). There's probably seating for about 25-30 people max. There's no foyer, so when someone opens the door in the winter time, cold air brushes over my pho making it cold. So we walk in, no staff in sight, a few tables open, but they needed to be cleared off. it was kinda like that my previous visits too. A few minutes later, one of the staff saw us, but did not acknowledge us at all. I don't know what she was doing. Walking around? We stood around for another minute or so and said we like to sit there --- (I pointed to a table that needed busing). She took her dandy time clearing it off. I'm pretty sure the towel she used to clean was dirty because it appeared out of nowhere. We finally got seated. It didn't look busy. There was a larger party next to us, but they seemed to have gotten all their food already. We didn't get menus. We didn't get water. We had to walk up to the register (which was unattended) and grab some stickyass, laminated menus. Looked at them for a few minutes hoping they would come get our order. Well, they didn't. Still no staff in sight. The front of the restaurant was completely abandoned by the staff for at least 10 minutes (It felt like 10 minutes). Another couple came in and sat themselves down. They must have been locals and know what to do. Now they were in the same boat we were. Playing the waiting game. After what seemed forever, the lady waitress came out and proceeded to take the order of the couple that came in after us. WTF!?! What about us? We've been here for 15 freakin' minutes and no one even acknowledged us (but it was the only pho place worth visiting Wausau so we stuck it out). So after she took their order, the guy waiter came and took our order because we waved him over (he was cool). When the lady waitress came back out, she had the nerve to ask us if we needed menus. I was like, Biii----ssh! (in my head of course). Ok, so we got our order in. It was just pho and eggrolls and water. I didn't want to complicate things, but I guess I was wrong. Pho does not take 20 minutes to come out. That's all this place does. PHO! Their restaurant name is "Pho 76". They should be good at making pho. 20 minutes was pho-king ridiculous. So we finally got our pho. I like mine spicy. Went to open the garlic chili oil and it was super crusty. The jar was about 75% full, but the top 70% of it was all dried out. It looked like they hadn't refilled it in weeks or cleaned at least once during the life of the restaurant. I settled for sriracha sauce (which is good, but you want that oily taste too, you know). We ate fast because I needed to get to the Fox Valley area ASAP. Never got a refill on water. Ran up to the register and demanded they take my payment now and dipped. It was close to an hour if not more that we spent in that dreadful place. I couldn't wait to get back on the road......ohh...Hmong people, I wanna help you out, but you disappoint me. Driving through, got a Jones for pho. Glad we stopped. We were the only round eyes in the place - always a good sign. Very tasty pho, some of the best I've had. Boston, NYC, DC - this is the best. Broth is excellent, even before it get doctored up with chilis and other sauces. Huge portions, I couldn't finish the XL bowl - first time that's ever happened to me (6'1", 260 lb). Monster portion of noodles, and more meat (steak and meatballs) than I've ever had. Really fantastic. Wait staff was bored and lazy, and unfortunately the place was filthy. It's Wausau so I wasn't expecting much for decent Vietnamese. This was fine, considering the location. I'd fully agree about the service comments here. I found it friendly but slow - it took like 15 minutes once walking in the door to place the appetizer/drink order. We got the eggrolls and they were pretty darn good. In fact, I'd say they were the highlight of the meal. Note: they're not spectacular but they're tasty enough. Our table then ordered Bahn mi sans meatloaf (pate), a steak pho with shrimp added and a shrimp bun. I didn't care for the sandwhich bc the pickled veggies were soggy and the roast pork was...just off. The pho was decent, hearty but the broth needed some major doctoring (psiracha, soy and hoisen). As a Vietnamese girl coming from California, I wasn't expecting much, but I was actually VERY happy with the pho that I got here! Its DELICIOUS and very authentic!!!! Their portion sizes are HUGE!!!
