Went here with a group of friends, two of them having frequented it before. A small place but with a nice interior and atmosphere. We started out with a pitcher of sangria...not the best I've ever had, but it was drinkable. Ordered a variety of dishes; the mediterranean salad was decent, the Albondigas were hearty. The Paella wasn't anything special in my opinion, although my fellow diners enjoyed it. The spicy Adobo Chicken was really good and quite spicy. But my favorite had to be the baked macaroni and cheese. Oh my gosh, yes! I'm pretty sure I cleaned the plate so well they didn't have to wash it afterwards. Groupon was that extra push that led me to come to Whittier and finally check off Phlight from my bookmark list- two years later. My husband and I had an amazing experience; our service and the food was exceptional. The menu was intriguing and tempted me to order just about everything. With our wine and beer on hand we nibbled on warmed spiced marcona almonds and green and black olives. I couldn't get enough, I even asked for seconds right before dessert. Like previous Yelpers have noted; I highly encourage and recommend the bacon wrapped manchego stuffed dates as part of your meal. I almost licked the plate clean and kinda wanted the kitchen to keep 'em coming. Next visit calls for a double portion order for sure. Our entrees of seafood paella and chimmichurri manchego cheese rib eye was out of this world! While I did find my paella to be a touch over salted, it was palatable enough. The saffron rice was cooked perfectly. I had hoped to find a crispy crunchy crusts usually formed at the bottom of paella pans. Sadly, none of that here but not a complete bust of the dish. I barely finished it- it was certainly a hearty portion. As for the rib eye, it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. Nice grill marks, crisp edges and evenly cooked and tender as we sliced through it. The manchego cheese sauce set us over the top. Amazeballs. We rarely order dessert but because our evening was going without a hitch or hiccup we shared a Mexican chocolate soufflé. I say skip it as it was too dry for my liking and dense. I am very happy with my experience at Phlight. The service was top notch, the atmosphere was very nice (I love the open kitchen), and the food was just okay. Don't get me wrong, you can not get food like this in the area, so I appreciate it, but if I am looking to spend good money on fine dining I want the food to deliver a better experience. Best part of the meal, and what will make me go back, was the Deconstructed Pozole. The cabbage, infused with lemon was outstanding, with the hominy puree, very good. The first time I came here for brunch I was told they were closed for a private event. No big deal. I came back on a Saturday night and it was completely open, but they told me all the tables were taken up with reservations so we sat the bar. Besides that, the food is really good, the ambiance is great and me and my friend were there for hours at the bar talking and ordering tapas. Everything is good for sharing. Oye. This is the third time I ate here, I had forgotten how good it was. This time around, everything that we ate was new. First: bacon wrapped dates- tasty, but too cheesy for my taste. Second: tortilla espanola- I've tasted this before made by a coworker, but this one had spinach, mushrooms and chorizo! It was great. Tres: tiger shrimp- my favorite of the night, I liked it so much that while scarfing it down, I almost choked. Garlicky and perfect. Fourth: bacalao- cod patties... Eh I could of done without them. Ive been to flight twice now and it wasnt till this past experience that i decided to write a review. Phlight is a tapas place, which is pretty good because you get to order a few plates and share with your party. The menu has t good a random variety, you can order Mac and to chesse to musscles but everything that i have tried so far is pretty good. I wouldnt say the best but good. I wasn't going to rate Phlight since I have always been a fan of this place...but last night me and my daughter had dinner there. First thing I noticed that it was so loud I don't remember it being so loud. maybe they were trying to drown out the bass music from the workout place next door. Not cool when you are trying to enjoy a nice dinner. I did order the yummy Sangria which is always good! We also ordered soup, salad, Paella, & Boquerones. Everything came all at once and within 5-8 min. Thats fine for the soup, salad, and maybe the Boquerones, but the Paella? It seemed like they had it prepared already put in a bowl ready to serve. Or how about delivering the soup and salad then wait till we are almost done then the Boquerones, I understand it's tapas but shheesh. But I got the bacon wrapped dates, which were really good when they were hot, but once they cooled down the cheese started to congeal so that wasn't so great. I've been going to Phlights for years and it has been a favorite of mine until now but after this recent change in the menu my disappointment was immense. For the most part my family and I have ordered the Potatoes, Paella, Bacon wrapped dates, and the Flat Iron Steak. The change in menu is mediocre in comparison; the steak was over cooked tough and under seasoned, the sauces that came with the steak had no flavor, the paella felt more like ordinary fried rice as it was missing clams, overly salty, had egg in it, and raw tomato as a topping. In addition the patatas bravas were replaced with seasoned French fries. The change in menu was unnecessary and disappointing. read more

Where do 3 girlfriends go for a good time when they are looking for something central to Anaheim, Torrance & Pasadena?? Phlight, of course! We decided to give this place a try this past Tuesday for girls night. Parking is super easy in the garage across the street...although get your car out by 10. The food at Phlight was pretty good. My favorite items were the steak & the sweet potato fries. I was disappointed in the cheese plate & the mac & cheese. I'm a wannabe cheese snob and they kind of F'ed up here. But more importantly, the wine was very good and the pours, very generous. Don't believe the "3 oz pour" phrase on the menu. The pours were definitely a lot more than that. I finished off the evening with some port, which was heavenly. Around 10, a cute little blonde girl came bouncing in looking for the owners of a Mustang and a Pilot. It was the girl who worked at the parking garage. She was closing up and came over to look for my girlfriend and I so we wouldn't get locked in. Now *that's* service! The portions are appetizer size. 5 of us shared around 6 tapas and we were full. Had an excellent dinner tonight at Phlight. I love the open feel of the restaurant. Lots of seating including a bar area, and tables are far enough apart that there is still an element of privacy. We ordered several tapas, the Phlight Burger, a beer (Dale's Pale Ale) and sangria. Our favorite tapas were the tempura tomato and the bacon wrapped dates. The tempura tomato was a whole tomato with a breaded exterior similar to a mozzarella stick. The wow factor is that the tomato is stuffed with cheese, pesto sauce, and mushrooms. Plus the tomatoes come with two suttle but flavorful sauces. Now for the bacon wrapped dates...BACON wrapped anything is delicious, but bacon wrapped dates on a bed of a unique honey tamarind sauce is AMAZING!!! Dont think twice..try this tapa..this is my top tapa vote. The empanadas were good but not much different than other empanadas I've tried. Skip the pork belly tacos as they were quite bland. The tacos were certainly missing onions and/or a spicier sauce. We also tried the Phlight Burger. The hamburger patty was thick, juicy, full of flavor and topped with sauteed onions and CRISPY BACON...need I say more? Highly recommend. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner experience at Phlight. The food was excellent, the service was top notch, and the ambiance was nice. I highly recommend for couples and large groups alike. We look forward to returning to Phlight soon. read more

Small place in Uptown but great food and service. I especially like that they have granache choices on the wine list. Heavy Cabernets are great but it's summer and I like having lighter choices. My only issue is that it's listed as a wine bar, and named "phlight", like a flight of wines, so one would expect a very long wine list. Their list is nice, and you won't be disappointed, but it isn't like going to wine country with pages to choose from. We had the bacon wrapped figs, esquites, asparugus, lamp chops, more that I can't remember but it was all delicious! Served by Carlos who was great. I loved the open kitchen and that they brought each item as it was ready and pipping hot. Due to my being unemployed, it's been just about a year since I last went to Phlight. However since I just created a Yelp profile for the first time I wanted to make certain to them a shout out... I love tapas and I hate it. Phlight had a lot of fun items on the menu and the atmosphere was great for a small group of friends (4 or less). However, I give it 3 stars because we had some odd mix ups due to two servers who were helping us but not communicating with each other and the price being pretty expensive for what was served. Items we enjoyed: Patatas Bravas - can never go wrong with a good garlic aioli Albondigas - hand made and great flavor Items that were only okay: Bacon Wrapped Dates - fatty/chewy bacon. I'm so happy that this place has stayed in business for several years. This is a true testament to the quality of the food because a lot of places in Uptown Whittier don't last. I have been coming here for years and I'm never disappointed with the food. They opened for lunch a few years ago and the lunch specials are so cheap! The last time I went it was less than $20 for 2 people. I just went for dinner and all the food is tapas style which is great because you get to try a little bit of everything. My favorite items on the item are the flat iron steak, sopes, mole, and empanadas. Some of the meat dishes can be eaten by one person if you don't want to share. Phlight is marketed as a Tapas place, but it's more like a Spanish-fusion restaurant -- and, it's not very good. The paella was probably the worst I've tasted; the rice was the wrong consistency, the shrimp and other seafood had a frozen aftertaste, and it was too salty, however, the presentation was okay. Overall, the restaurant has a nice ambience and the servers were fine. The wait was about half-an-hour which is fine for a Friday evening. Since there are no other authentic Spanish (not Mexican) restaurants in the Whittier area, I can see why people give it good marks. I went to Phlight with a group of friends (who had all been here numerous times) on a Friday night for the first time. LOVED IT! We arrived about 5:30 and there were a few open tables. By 7:30, there were several people waiting outside. Very nice, relaxing atmosphere and the service was great. It definitely has a family owned feel. We ordered the sangria and were very happy with it. Not too sweet and had a pleasant fruit taste. We ordered the almonds and olives as we waited for everybody to arrive. There was a very slight spice with heat. Very tasty way to start the night. We ordered several food items to share and were happy with every one. Some came out faster than others so it helped us not having to any items sitting on the table at a time. The staff was very quick to pick up the empty dishes when needed. Tomato Tempura - Ordinarily, I don't eat tomatoes unless they are mashed, mutilated and lots of preservatives but being an adult, I tried them. So glad I did. Roma tomatoes, hollowed out, a very light tempura batter, not greasy in any way and a flavorful cheese mixture in them. Spinach Croqueta - My favorite of the night. Spinach, cheese, bread or panko crumbs never tasted so good. There was a sauce served on the side that went very well with them. I loved everything about them! Dill Pickle Tacos - Never would I have thought to put dill pickle chips in a ground beef taco but I am glad somebody did. The flavor was different but it was definitely a pleasant surprise. Pork Belly Tacos - I have seen these get some bad reviews and I am not sure why. They were very flavorful and the sauce has a great flavor. It could have used a little heat but I am not complaining. Albondigas - the meatballs were very flavorful and they were served on a little crostini with a cheese topping and a caper sauce. The meatballs were light not dense, which I prefer. French Toast Dessert - YUM! Not much to French Toast but the vanilla and cinnamon with the toasted flavor were outstanding. There was also a dollop of whipped cream to put on it.
