We were surprised to find such a fancy schmancy place in the middle of uptown Whittier. It had a very urban vibe to it. Most of the guests were either couples or people getting together after work. The interiors consist of distressed cement walls and wood furniture. The open kitchen brings life to this tapas and wine bar. I would've rated it 5 stars if not for the cross fit center next door. Every time someone slams a barbell on the ground you hear the bang and feel everything around you shake. If you didn't know any better, you'd think there was an explosion. After a while though you get used to it and just carry on. My husband and I came here on a Thursday night after work. We didn't make a reservation and had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated, but we didn't mind. Across the street there's a parking garage. I think we only paid $5. On the way there my husband remembered that this was a place recommended to him by one of his friends. The staff was very professional. They're also knowledgeable about their menu and wine list. After being seated you will be served with a small plate of assorted olives and almonds. I needed something warm for my stomach so I started with their tomato soup. I expected the typical Tomato Soup served in most places and was surprised to taste a different version. I personally loved their interpretation of the tomato soup, not too thick and orange, just a very light approach. Tasted delicious. Then I ordered their Roasted John Dory which I enjoyed very much because of its moist and flavorful texture. It was also beautifully plated. Best of all, the entire dish was only $10. My husband indulged in two orders of their Lamb Burger Slides and their Cheese Plate. He was smiling with satisfaction and I had to drive us home because he enjoyed a little too much of the wine. Plights is mine and my boyfriend's favorite little spot =) We most always sit at the front counter area where this one guy is so helpful in what to try next on the menu. He has yet to fail on recommending a delicious tapa for us to try. I actually just ate there last night with my sister, for a little going away dinner and drinks, so we sat in the regular seating area. Odd at first because im so used to sitting at the bar but I felt super comfortable after my first drink =P I absolutely love the Arugula Salad to start out with, has this sweet but not over powering flavor... LOVE As for the dinner portion I hands down always order The Ahi Tuna Tostadas! Phlight is a spacious, red-paint-and-brick-wall kind of place--decor not typical of your usual cozy tapas bar. Came in almost close to closing and the restaurant was still bustling. The MENU is a PAGE LONG with a GOOD VARIETY of meaty, veggie, starchy, and seafood-y choices. There wasn't anything that spoke to me in particular but they do offer the COMMON TAPAS dishes. FYI, the dishes are HUGE for "tapas"--you can probably SHARE amongst 2-3 ppl, maybe 4 if you want to stretch it. PAELLA--The first bite of rice was full of flavor but with time, this dish TURNED SOUR for me. The rice pellets were a bit big and there was NO SEAR. The bowl that it comes in is quite small so it's NOT OPTIMAL FOR MIXING the seafood and meats, even though the rice was semi-wet. The SHRIMPS were HUGE and the MUSSELS and CLAMS were SMALL but bc it was hard to mix them with the rice, they eventually TURNED DRY and pretty TASTELESS towards the end of our meal. The SAUSAGE was TASTY but the CHICKEN bits were BLAND. SPICY ADOBO CHICKEN WINGS--Wings were SUPER DRY, to the point of crispness and the black sauce added only a SALTY flavor. There was NO SPICE whatsoever. BACON WRAPPED DATES--Probably one of my BETTER experiences with bacon wrapped dates. The bacon and dates were SOFT and the flavors meshed well. PRESENTATION SUCKED though. Sorry, I know it's almost closing but I am still eating with my eyes first. LENGUA TACOS--Bf really ENJOYED these and said that the lengua was cooked differently than what he's usually used to. The RED SAUCE was quite NEUTRAL and DIDN'T ADD much to the dish. PATATAS BRAVAS--the ONE thing Phlight GOT RIGHT and how can a tapas bar mess up on such a staple? Seasoning on point. BRUSSEL SPROUTS--Sprouts were SOGGY and the BEETS added a TART SPRINGY TWIST but we weren't a fan of the flavor bc we ended up with a beet bush at the end of our meal. **Overall, I probably wouldn't come back. Everything tasted amazing, there was not one thing I didn't like. The skirt steak was some of the best I've ever had, it was literally melts in your mouth. The wine selection is interesting, offbeat, and well-matched to the food. Also priced fairly, and they now offer "flights", which are just smaller portions so you can taste 2-3 different wines before comitting to a whole glass. Not a lot of variety (usually one Pinot, one Cab, and one Merlot by the glass, plus interesting Spanish wines like Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Rioja that match well with the food). The food menu evolves v-e-r-y slowly, so the good news is that your "favorite" from last year is probably still there (Albondigas, short ribs, chicken mole, and sweet potato fries all deserve to stay!). The bad news is that you can get a little bored with the menu after a while. But they do a great job in the kitchen (I'd rather wait a little longer and have everything come out Hot and Perfect), and free corkage on Mon/Tues lets you bring something interesting from home for free. read more

What a good find! Came here on a Saturday night and had such a good experience. The staff was quick and attentive and our server had some great suggestions. Ambiance was great, had a rustic/industrial decor to it. Things started well with their complimentary olives and smoked almonds. The olives had a good lil kick to them. We had the bacon wrapped dates - you can never go wrong with anything wrapped in bacon. Beef Empanadas - flaky outside, nicely seasoned shredded beef inside and delicious sauce drizzled on the outside. Sweet potatoe fries - fried to a nice crisp and topped of with some sea salt. I didn't care for the garlic aioli they served it with. Tasted like just plain mayo, no garlic. Lamp chops - medium rare, served with a sweet sauce- so good! Flat Iron steak - medium served with a ginger type sauce - pretty good. We skipped dessert as nothing on the menu really stood out. Think they had the typical flan and chocolate something....maybe next time. We also got some wine and the sangria. The sangria was good nothing out of the ordinary, for me nothing beats the sangria at Wood Spoon in DTLA. Best part was that everything was very moderately priced. Phlight came highly recommended to us. We had been wanting to try it and the opportunity presented itself. We ate dinner here the other night and really enjoyed it. We ordered the artisan cheese plate and the mini lamb burgers with blue cheese sauce. The cheese plate came with a variety of soft and hard cheeses, but the brie was the most memorable for me. I liked how it was accompanied with grapes, strawberries, green apple slices, and of course bread. The lamb burgers were very cute, but I was disappointed that I couldn't taste the blue cheese very well. The lamb burger meat was a bit soft. It wasn't undercooked, it was just soft. The sangria was very tasty. Lots of fruit floating around in the red wine. My husband ordered a beer that was very similar to a stout, but not as heavy. This is the best restaurant in Whittier. That might sound like faint praise, but it really is a good restaurant. The decor is very nice, the atmosphere is relaxed, the service is good, and the food is good. Some days they have live music, which is either a nice thing, or annoying depending on what kind of night you are trying to have. Basically, Phlight is a small plates restaurant that compares favorable with any restaurant in Los Angeles. If you are looking for a nice restaurant, it is the only choice in this area. The prices are not that bad, depending on what you order. I would say that 3-4 items for every two people is enough. My least expensive meal was $25/person, and my most expensive was $55 (not counting wine). Most items are good, and I have never left there feeling unsatisfied or over charged. read more

Needing work: The mac and cheese was a bit dry and the dramatically presented tomato tempura looked good but tasted bland. Our bottle of red wine arrived too warm to drink, having been improperly stored. A place this good should have paid more attention to this detail. I'm not quite sure why everyone ranked this place so high. It didn't quite fit the bill for a tapas bar or a wine bar. 1. As a wine bar, you'd expect a very extensive list. Here, the list was rather short and most of the stuff was out. I don't even like Merlot, but it wasn't even on the menu. That's pretty basic. As a positive, the wines they did have were pretty good. 2.As a tapas bar, it just kinda sucked. Not many food choices and the presentation left a lot to be desired. I ordered, some fish thing. It was a well made made fish ,with over the top seasoning and sauce sprinkled with bacon bits....what?!?!?!?! 3. Customer service was the brightest light in this place. Everyone was attentive, and seemed to master the art of coming around only when appropriate and leaving me alone when i don't need anything. I recently discovered this place & I'm a huge fan! My friend works at a wine bar up north and I have been searching for something like that around here. The food is really good & I like how their beer and wine selections change frequently. The only complaint I have was that my mom ordered the "House Chardonnay" our first time there and when we got the bill, it was a $18 glass of wine! I know it's not that big of a deal, but they should have informed us that the menu is constantly changing and there isn't a standard "house" wine. This place was very hospitable and customer service oriented. We had the Passion Fruit Ceviche which was pleasantly good. I had my doubts but wow was it delicious. The cheese plate is really good with the wine. I had the something "du jour" from South Africa. Ask for it as it has been on their menu from the beginning. The ambiance was very retro with a Silverlake, Angelino feel to it. At times I forgot I was in Whittier. Family owned so shopping local was an added plus. I definetly recommend this as an after work spot to chill with some good wine and tapas. Overall, can't complain. Couldn't give it a five star as it doesn't have a wow factor. I love Phlight, when my parents are footing the bill. I get the PAELLA every time I go. It's a great place to share dishes, but keep in mind they're small (aka tapas) so if you want everybody to have an ample portion, consider getting two of that special appetizer you all love. Pleasantly surprised! We live in Whittier and knew people who had been and loved it and others that were not so thrilled. My wife and I went out with two other couples and had a great evening. My wife had never been to a tapas style restaurant and enjoyed the experience. We started with the famous almonds and olives with a glass of sangria. Perfect for a warmish summer evening. The mystery that is tapas started to unravel as started with a Cesar salad with a nice twist of macadamia(?) nuts. We went on to sweet potato fries that are definitely the best I have ever had. We then went for the red, sweet gusto and ordered a pitcher of sangria...very, very good. One of the couples was vegetarian and enjoyed the asparagus (without the serrano), tomato tempura and baked mac and cheese. The meat eaters had the albondigas, which was a little salty but good, the manchengo rib eye, chicken mole which was not too heavy and not too sweet...just the way I like/love it. We continued with the bacon wrapped dates which half of us loved and half of us did not care for...I loved them. if that wasn't enough, I forgot to mention the serrano on toast; also very good The space was great.; Modern, but still warm and not pretentious or trendy. I've been to this place twice in the last month. The food is delicious. The service is wonderful. The menu is not overwhelming but has many good options. I haven't had anything I didn't like. Of course I had the flight of wine and although they don't have an extensive wine selection, they have very good wine. Their sangria is also tasty. Great place for a date, dinner with friends or a family dinner. I look forward to returning and trying more menu items. Things I have tried and recommend- Pork belly tacos- OMG flavor bomb! I've been here twice in the last two weeks and I would be perfectly happy going here once a week for the rest of my life. The food- is amazing. The service- is amazing. The wine list- is amazing. I think it's safe to say I had a pretty amazing time both times I dined here. The decor is a perfect marriage of an upscale, wine bar and a small, local restaurant. It's so homey and warm. The service was just way above par. And the food.... OH EM GEE. -bacon wrapped dates -bacalao -skirt steak -stuffed squid -ceviche -braised lamb shank -mashed potatoes (even something as simple as mashed potatoes..) And for dessert? Try the toast or the chocolate cake with some of the port they offer. I was in food heaven. All definitely must-trys. WOW WOW WOW. Phlight was a welcome surprise in historic Uptown Whittier. The area has gone through a huge change over the past 15 years... From its historic roots to the more trendy atmosphere that it offers, there are plenty of choices for food. We went on a Thursday night and made reservations for 6PM. I didn't know if they would be necessary but soon after we arrived realized that this place is popular, make sure you have reservations no matter what day or time. Service was prompt and friendly. The server was knowledgeable about the menu items and made good food and drink suggestions. We had- sangria and some beers. It was happy hour where alcohol was $2 off, a nice surprise. For food we had the... - Cesar Salad: Nice, not too sour, light and refreshing, shredded lettuce, unlike any other cesar we had had. - Cheese Plate: Nice selection of prosciutto, cheese and little jellies. - Pork Belly Tacos: Awesome, good taste and nice little avocado sauce - Skirt steak: Excellent, cooked to medium served with balsamic reduction and rice - Tiger Prawns: Grilled, very tasty, served in a sauce - Paella: WOW, star dish. Had shrimp, shellfish like mussels, chorizo and scallops. Just great. My friend, who lives in Whittier, suggested that we go to Phlight for a late dinner. This was my very first time at a "tapas" restaurant, so I wasn't sure how it worked or what to order. I learned from my friend that the concept of tapas is sharing. My initial reaction? "I'M SO HUNGRY!!! I DON'T WANT TO SHARE!" Little did I know, my taste buds would end up verrrrry happy. Me and my friends ordered 5 dishes: 1) sweet potato fries, 2) bacon wrapped dates, 3) spicy adobo wings, 4) albondingas, and 5) baked Iberian crepes. I honestly didn't expect that anything on the menu would whet my greedy appetite; but by the end of our meal, I was full AND satisfied. Everything dish we ordered had a unique blend of flavors and was surprisingly savory. The baked crepes were a nice combination of sweet and salty to end the meal. But if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be the bacon wrapped dates, hands down. So delicious! I have to admit, the ingredients in some of the dishes were intimidating, but if you're someone who enjoys quality food, you'll appreciate how carefully thought out and put together these dishes are. I don't recommend Plight for picky eaters who don't enjoy "finger food" portions. For people with normal appetites, each dish is probably enough for 2 to 3 people to share. The portions aren't what we like to think of as "generous," but there's definitely enough for a few people to enjoy. I would recommend ordering a variety of dishes to guarantee a filling, yet well-proportioned meal. In fact, 5 dishes might've been a little more than just enough for 3 girls... We were on the verge of food comas by the time we left! As far as setting, Phlight had a welcoming ambiance and the set-up was tasteful: a lot of open space, candle-lit tables, dim lights, a nice bar, and simple, yet classy table settings, making it ideal for intimate dinners with friends or even with a special someone. The place was also easy to find (Philadelphia St. and Bright St. = Plight...how clever). Once we got there, we were seated right away and our waitress was very attentive throughout our meal. She always made sure our glasses were filled with water, didn't mind letting us split our check three ways on credit, and after we had already paid, she didn't rush us out of the restaurant...so we sat at our empty table for what seemed like another half an hour, just talking! I don't think each dish took that long to prepare, but our waitress gave us adequate time in between dishes, just enough so that we could savor each one. And trust me...the food here is worth savoring! I also noticed that owner of the restaurant made a point to greet some of his guests and to ask people if they were enjoying their meal. My husband and I stumbled upon this little gem of a restaurant . The atmosphere and food is truly great. It's a bit small but I never wait for than 15 minutes . My husband's favorite dish is the pickle tacos with their red sauce (spicy) , but very delicious . My favorite would probably have to be the chicken coveted with black bean sauce . I had the sangria the first time and didn't care for it , however their wine was great ! So, go for the wine instead for the Sangria if your up for a glass. read more

Like any restaurant, the food should be as good as can be, and Philight doesn't disappoint. BUT it's staff really takes it up a notch, making this quiet neighborhood tapas restaurant into an all around wonderful dining experience. The owners are related to the owners of some other famous LA hot spots, Cobras & Matadors as well as Church & State. I'm usually underwhelmed by chicken wings, but their spicy adobe wings were amazing, great flavor. The empanadas, mexican meat pies, are very good as well. There's never a time that i go, that i don't order the bacon wrapped dates. Abondigas is served as mini meatball sandwiches instead of soup like many Latin restaurants. Their Paella is also something i would recommend. For dessert, they have flan, chocolate cake and spanish french toast. All three are good, but i'm partial to the french toast. Usually for something this hip and tasty, you have to venture closer to Los Angeles. For once, there's something in the suburbs. Go once, and you'll come back again and again. read more

Since than I have returned many times. My top picks for Phlight... *Sweet Potato Fries *Bacon Wrapped Dates *Any of the soups *Flat Iron Steak *Mexican Souffle I do think that some of the prices are a bit extreme, and I do agree that the menu could do for some revamping. I visited Phlight for my first time this weekend and I LOVED it! My group was a party of 3, we ordered a pitcher of Sangria. The Sangria was really good! It was enough to give us all about 2 1/2 glasses. And they are BIG glasses. We shared: Pacific Rim Caesar Salad - This isn't an ordinary Caesar salad, it is shredded lettuce which makes it very interesting and crunchy to eat and the dressing was really good! Deconstructed Pozole - This is DELISH! It is Pozole on a plate basically served with warm tortillas. and a fish dish which I can not remember the name of but it melted in your mouth! Oh and Serrano Wrapped Asparagus, which was also very good. For desert we had (i think it was called) Mexican French Toast which was also reallllllly good! It is a very nice restaurant to go and hang out with friends and talk and enjoy the whole night sampling different items and drinking wine! It was a very enjoyable experience! read more

The food is as authenticly Hispanic as it can possibly be! We had at least 8 of their dishes and they were all delicious. The Tiger Shrimp tasted like my dad's homemade shrimp, the empanadas meat tasted like my mom's cooking as well as their Platano frito with Chocolate. My mom does something very similar and I've never had it anywhere else but at home. Their take on it was fantastic and would love it have it again. (BTW, it looks awful, but you really must try it!) I don't know where to start :/ I've had a lot of dishes here. I do know, you'll enjoy every bite you take ;) Lentils are my FAVORITE item on the menu. A crisp tiny legume, with a bit of tang from the balsamic vinegar, nuttiness of the lentil, combined with chunks of bacon is truly something out of this world. Tried making it at home, I won't ever do that again :/ Another must try is the Green Chili. O-M-G it is fan-f*cking-tastic (excuse my language)! I always order it extra spicy, yummy! So it comes with a few corn tortillas and a side of rice. Definitely a must try item! I've had one bad dish there but that was so long ago that I don't remember what it was.
