It's been almost 3 years since I had Mint Mojito iced coffee at Philz. I have been super hesitant to buy any iced drink to go. The sight of overflowing plastic to go cups frighten me. Pre-pandemic I carried my to go mug religiously. Today I passed by Philz during the heatwave. The mint Mojito was calling my name. I asked if I could use my glass mug. They weren't ready to do that but what I got was my favorite iced drink in a compostable paper cup. A lot has changed over the past two plus years. I find this place is exhausting. While I "like" Philz products, the process and culture is beginning to wear on me. I don't want to wait 45 mins because they 'Ef't up an order. And yet that is what is expected...and the salty/bitchy apology... whoa! I've been twice in the last week, after not having been to this location in +2 years and don't think I'll be back. Will be looking for a Peet's in the neighborhood to help my caffeine cravings vs wasting my time at this location. PS Just read all the other one star reviews... basically the same issues I faced... Why does it have to be so complicated? Why do we need 15 beans from which to choose? Why can't we be trusted to add our own milk and cream? Why do we have to order with the barista, repeat our order to the cashier, remembering which bean we ordered--are they not all the same price?--and then go back to the barista? This place has cultish following, and as an outsider, it's perplexing. philz is always good. try anything with the philtered soul cold brew. their seasonal drinks are also amazing. i tried the winter bliss as a hot drink on a super cold day and loved it. this location is especially nice because parking is relatively easy and there's a whole foods across the street to go grocery shopping. read more

If the rest of the menu is as tasty as the Iced Mint Mojito, then my wallet is in big trouble. At first sip, the thought of spring rolls crossed my mind. I've been to so many locations and I just can't get enough. I love Philz. It is, by far, my favorite coffee chain, spot, joynt, everything. I'm a decaf gal so I go straight for the decaf ethiopian, lightly sweetened with light cream. On warm days, I'll get the mint mojito...no, not the alcoholic beverage. This review would have gotten a 5 star because this Philz location is amazing and the baristas are fantastic- They seriously ALL make fantastic coffee. HOWEVER, Very disappointed and frustrated that employees were sent home bc they were wearing Palestinian flag pins. This is censorship and disgraceful considering Philz has origins in PALESTINE. The original owner was Palestinian. Philz is always consistently great. I used to live near this location so it would be nice to just walk to and grab a highly caffeinated cup o' coffee. I usually go w/ iced Tesora and a splash of cream. I also usually order with their Mobile app and pick up to save time, since the queues can get somewhat long. It's especially a lifesaver with COVID to use their mobile app--very easy ordering and pickup, since you cannot order inside. Truly grab and go! read more

I'm sorry, but this place feels so overrated. I came here before and got a Philtered Soul-- it was okay, nothing special. I decided to come again to try something else since I've heard so many fellow college students rave about this place-- but it just made me and my friend run to the bathroom immediately (& my stomach is usually never affected by food/drinks). We got a iced coffee rosé and a chai -- the rosé had like an expired taste and smell and the chai was super watery and white-washed (better to just go to a south Asian restaurant and get an authentic chai latte for half the price). Kinda had high hopes for this place due to all the high reviews and the numerous branches but it's really not all that in my opinion. I know everyone has different taste so don't let my review stop you from trying, but personally I did not like it at all and it felt like a waste of money. read more

I have been enjoying going to Philz for over a decade. It has been a five (5) star experience up until yesterday. Staff friendliness, quality coffee drinks and easy going fellow customers continue. Why the low rating now!? Yesterday I almost tripped and fell because a customer had his power cord laying on the floor across the area where people need to walk. I said to him that this is a trip hazard. He did not correct the situation. I went to the shift manager and asked if there was a policy against power cords on the floor. The manager said that she was not aware of any policy. I was the safety officer for the California Department of Industrial Relations. I know power cords across walking areas invites worker comp injury claims. I am a 75 year old male in good health. I noticed most of the other customers were 20-30 year olds on their devices. Anyone at any age can have limited vision and/limited mobility -- temporarily or chronically. It is easy to be focused on heading to the order line and trip on a cable on the floor. I realize that Philz needs to accommodate the needs of their young customers who are on laptops and tablets. Perhaps more convenient ac outlets would eliminate the dangers of cables across the walk areas. read more

How many baristas does it take make make a cup of hot herbal mint tea? The answer is three in this case. No that's not a joke. My partner and I came in on a Sunday afternoon, and when we walked in, it was like we were walking into a dungeon where a heavy metal concert is happening. I knew that could be some problems. I ordered a hot herbal mint tea medium, my partner heard that very clearly and said, please make that two. We then waited for almost 20 minutes before our drinks were ready. And guess what, they made two two mint mojito instead of two hot herbal mint tea. She clearly could not hear us with the loud music. After bringing back our drinks to them, we were told they will make us our hot mint tea. That's when I started observing them, one girl is working, two were giggling and having fun, all three of them at the same station, making our drinks. And after another 10minutes, we finally got our drink. Phew! And in the process of waiting for our drink, the music has progressed from heavy metal to thrash metal, and grew even louder. That's certainly an experience that I would remember for a long time. read more

Philz is my favorite coffee shop to go to! I live super close to the old location on Shattuck, and I'm honestly devastated that it closed. Although Philz has expanded beyond the Bay Area to the rest of the nation, it had never stopped feeling like your local coffee shop. Considering how close this location is too my church and gym, I probably come here at least 2-3 times a month. The baristas have gotten to know me over the years and know all my favorite drink orders. They even ask me how medical school is going and get very concerned if I haven't shown up in a few weeks! My recommendations: - My favorite blends to drink black are probably Philtered Soul and Hazelnut. - Sometimes I like doing half Philtered Soul and half Yerba Mate, which gives the coffee a more herbal flavor. Not everyone's cup of tea (haha get it), but it's an interesting alternative if you wanna try something different. - If you want something on the sweet side, go for a White Christmas - 1/2 Greater Alarm + 1/2 Hazelnut with cinnamon and nutmeg in the filter, sweet and creamy. - On a hot day, look no further than the Iced Coffee, extra sweet, extra creamy. Terrible for the arteries, wonderful for the soul :) The Mint Mojito and iced Mocha Tesora are also great options! - The food here is good, but pricey. If I wanna treat myself, I'll get the avocado toast with egg. As a study space, Philz is pretty decent. The long table on the left side has outlets, but the tables in the middle don't. Also it can get crowded on Saturdays, which may make it difficult for some people to get work done. Parking is fine. There's a small lot, as well as ample non-metered street parking on either side of Gilman. read more

I'm not really a yelper, but I need someone who works here to hear me out. I love this spot, I live really close, and I would go every day in an ideal world. the thing that prevents me from going every day is the perpetually low stock on the vegan breakfast sandwich. it feels out of stock maybe 4 of the 7 days a week. those 4 days I end up going out of my way to Peet's which doesn't usually run out of vegan options. With plant based foods on the rise, I noticed they aren't usually out of the non plant based stuff. I know Philz is a community of feedback, so I'm hoping y'all hear this feedback and order more plant based sandwiches per week than you currently are. Thanks. read more

Walk the whole mile to get to this place. They are super organized with their orders, not a ton of people waiting so there's no crowding. Definitely worth the wait. Got the mint Mojito and it never disappoints. I was actually nervous to get it dairy free, but the taste is essentially the same. These barista's know what they're doing. Will definitely be walking back here. Due to Covid obviously you cannot walk in but the entire one side is open but they table. Drinks will be put out in alphabetical order so you can just grab and grow without having to check every single label. They are still selling their beans and all of that so check them out! read more

Easy to say that the staff gets why they work here. The product is fire and it is well executed. Customize your order and they don't act like it's a burden in fact they'll walk you through it. Knowledge is key and your can spark up a convo with baristas to get better acquainted with your options.
