This space was a bit of an unusual stop for us on our way out of town after a long rainy weekend. It was on the colder side which I prefer not to have, but the service was incredibly quick and there was a ton of seating, which I always appreciate. They didn't have the honey's pastry (he has needs) but we grabbed a couple drinks and started our journey home, so in making us tasty drinks Philz did not disappoint. I think this location would be great for warm sunny days, but it's my firm belief coffee houses should be warm, so hanging out in this location probably wouldn't be my jam. read more

It honestly pains me to have to write this review because I love Philz products. This Philz location likely gave me food poisoning. I got food poisoning early Saturday evening after having Philz Green Tea and their bacon and egg breakfast burrito. Late Saturday morning, I had the Philz burrito and tea and my roommate had Philz coffee. Later in the day, both my roommate and I ate fresh vegetables. By around 5 or 6pm, I started developing food poisoning symptoms. My roommate has not experienced any symptoms. It is now Monday morning and I still have food poisoning symptoms, which points to a much more severe food poisoning issue. This is a public health concern. I called Philz and spoke to the manager Ashley to report this issue. Ashley did not seem to understand what I wanted so I explained to her that I am concerned for other customers and that they should revise their food storage. Ashley offered me a refund and said she would look into the issue. This is what changed my mind from leaving a 1 star rating to a 2 star rating. I am much more concerned that others could get food poisoning from their products, so I am putting the word out there. In my opinion, you should not buy their food products! I like how this Philz is less chaotic than the gourmet ghetto/college location. It's farther away from campus so they have a designated parking lot that they share with other stores in the area, but it does get packed pretty quickly. However, I haven't had a hard time free street parking in the area. This place is smaller than the gourmet ghetto location, but around the same size as the College location. They have tables in the middle of the place with the line to order and pay going around the perimeter. I like this because it's less intrusive to the other people around and seems more organized. I usually go for the Mint Mojito and my BF goes for the iced Ecstatic! Be sure to bring your own cup to get a large for a price of a small. They also have good options here as well, but I have yet to try them. It's great that they have a sign dedicated to food since it makes it easier for people to see what they can order while they're waiting in line vs holding up the line when they get to the register. read more

Staff are always very helpful and cheerful here. This place is also a great place to study and work! Sometimes it can be confusing where to order, but all Phil'z places are like that. I'm not drunk on the Philz kool-aid like some devotees, but I do sorta understand the obsession. And this location will surely convert some new followers, with it's breezy indoor-outdoor space, private parking lot just out front, and proximity to Doughnut Dolly. A great fit for West Berkeley's industrial-chic resurgence. While Philz is definitely cool, with their bright orange chairs filling the patio, it's easy to feel like an outsider here. I almost always order at the wrong side of the counter, and am perpetually overhwhelmed by the menu. So many creative beverages! They list their coffees by dark, medium, and light with tasting notes fit for a wine list (helpful!). Then there's the famous mint-sprig drinks, like the iced mint mojito latte. Whatever you sip on, the space is great for lounging (which nobody does without a laptop, it seems. Thus, free wifi). Inside there's some big leather couches and a long community table. Running into people with hot coffee is not the biz, so it's nice that this one won't have you running into people after you order and saunter over to the cashier. The giant glass door also let's in tons of natural light & its wonderful. 3) if you order their super popular mint mojito iced coffee, you'll be like, "whoa I never would have thought about putting mint up in my coffee. This is actually hella good. Why didn't I think of that and start a happenin' Bay Area coffee chain?!" 4) you will wonder why is it called philz not phil's. But it's all good, 'cause either way you will thank Phil for creating all these amazing blends. Got up one morning and randomly decided today was gonna be the day I finally tried that mint mojito everyone has always been raving about. Duuuude. I dunno who thought of it, but mint and coffee *together* is apparently the shiznats. I got a small ice mint mojito and in under 5 minutes the barista had my drink ready, lil' floof of mint rising up past the creamy coffee 'n all. I was totally about to just grab it and head back to my seat to enjoy, but the intensity of the way the barista said "try a sip of your drink and tell me if it's alright" made me stop in my tracks. I took a sip and nodded in appreciation with a smile. Mr. Barista seemed to satisfied and I left to go sit down. Aside from the fact that I am very taken by this mint coffee combo, what really got me is the service here. While it's true Starbucks and Peets also has the if-you-don't-like-your-drink-we'll-make-it-again schtick, I don't feel like they take it to heart and actively check your satisfaction quite nearly as much as they do here at Philz. It might take a couple more visits for me to be sure, but I get the feeling that this level of great service is a characteristic of the Philz name. Cool vibe, good service, amazing coffee. I've had many great experiences here. I've had coffee meetings here for both personal and business. I usually order a tesora and will sometimes treat myself to an iced mint mojito. I keep telling myself I will try something else but I just can't help but stick to these two drinks. One thing I do find a bit awkward is where the bench area is, directly in front of where the coffee is brewed. Some people just post up and you're never sure if they've paid or if they're just chillen. Last time, there was a woman with her stroller and her girlfriend just blocking the walkway to the register. I asked if they were in line to pay and they told me they weren't. Instead of scooting over, they just stood there as I squeezed by. As a mom who's always aware of personal space and when my stroller is in the way, I was a little irritated that they were just posted, but let it go. Woohoo! Another Philz in Berkeley! For me, this location is a whole lot more convenient to get to than the 1 up on Shattuck. I can actually make it here sometimes in the morning on the way to work. While Philz blends are on point, I love that extra punch of an espresso shot too much to make Philz my primary coffee stop. Even so, I like coming here for a change-up from the usual & this Philz is a great launching point for motorcycle rides down the Coast on weekends. Why 5 stars? Because it pains me greatly that Philz is not in my area. --- --- --- Philz is possibly the greatest thing to happen to coffee. Instead of the menu consisting of lattes, mochas, cappuccinos, etc - they categorize things by roast. You have your choice of a few different lights, mediums, and darks. You are then given the option to add a light, medium, or strong amount of cream/sugar. PRO TIP SIDE BAR: Light roasts are the most caffeinated. My drink of choice is the New Manhattan with medium cream and sugar. Possibly my favorite cup of coffee on Earth. But it's not just about great joe at Philz... Service: It was only one visit, but all of the employees at this location were as nice as humanly possible. If I could custom-design the ideal customer service, I would select: Philz level: Berekely location. Food: I don't know if you can score a bagel at every Philz, but this one was an absolute delight. You might think it's easy to serve a tasty bagel, but this one was extra delicious. I ordered one of the onion variety with cream cheese and cucumbers. Ambiance: Want to sit inside on a comfy couch? I love Mojitos, mint, and coffee. Combine them all, with or without alcohol, and I'll be good before I crave for another one. One of the best things about visiting my family in the Bay Area is that I get to have Philz Coffee right near me. The individuals working here has always been friendly.. I mean with that much good coffee, it'll be difficult to be rude, right? They do have a menu, with several options in each category... regular coffees, mixed, etc. I've tried their ecstatic iced coffee (a mix of their blends, pretty good), greater alarm (light roast, and they say this one has the most caffeine when we asked them), Philtered Soul (medium/dark roast with hints of chocolate and hazelnut), Jacobs Wonderbar (dark roast, one of the staff's faves, and it was great), and of course, their mint mojito - my absolute fave. Although I crave Philz oh so often, part of me is pleased that I do not live right by one because well.. goodbye money! Also, you get charged for a small if you bring your own cup. I know it's only a matter of time before others find this great place and hoard in, but until then I'm happy taking my lunch break here and having a place to kick back. Such a great addition to the Gilman family. Went to the soft opening yesterday and had a great time relaxing in the outdoor seating with my sister. Got a chance to meet and greet with Phil himself and welcomed him to the neighborhood. Snuck a quick stop on my lunch break today (the actual Opening Day) and there was no line. I really doubt that will be the case in any near future. The neighbors are going to start smelling the coffee beans and realize they have greatness around the corner. There will be a Whole Foods opening up in the Fall across the street from this location which will bring in more of a crowd as well but I don't worry about it too much because this location is spacious and refreshingly "room-ey" (I can't think of another way to spell that made up word). Staff is great, very friendly. I'm looking forward to getting to know them and hearing their drink suggestions. On that note... try the Ginger snap iced coffee! #yum read more

THE GOOD: -- Barista are usually super friendly and helpful. They really want you to love your drink before you leave the place. (There have only been one instance in which a staff member was less than helpful) -- Mint Motijo Ice Coffee is my favorite drink here. It is sweet and creamy! It's a great dessert coffee. -- Great pastries and snacks/sandwich for you, if you decide to study here. THE BAD: --Not a lot of indoor or outdoor seating. My coffee loving friend from Berkeley always raved about how good the coffee here was so I had to stop by on my way up to Napa. I decided to get the Mint Mojito coffee and I kind of regretted it because it was freaking freezing in the morning. I swear if I saw that it was iced on the menu I wouldn't have gotten it...but now you know. It's iced. Two of my other friends also got the same thing, and my other friend got this $7 cup of coffee, which was freaking delicious. So why the three stars? Because the Mint Mojito was pretty nasty after an hour. I loved it when I first tasted it. It was really good, but I left it alone for about an hour and I had half a cup of it left. It just got progressively worse with time.. I couldn't even finish it because it tasted so...disgusting. So my advice: if you're getting the Mint Mojito coffee, get it on a hot day or consume within an hour. Another reason why I decided to give it 3 stars is because of the pricing. The $7 cup of coffee my friend got was good. Like seriously good. But let's be honest, I had coffee as good as that for under $5. (To be fair, I didn't try their other coffees). My Mint Mojito drink was $4 for the smallest size. I just think that this place is a little overpriced. Also, the barista that we first talked to literally raised his voice at us when we didn't stand behind the line. We just didn't see the sign, and we assumed that we just go up because there was nobody in front of him. No need to raise your voice man. Sorry we got all up in yo space without giving you a warning. FINE. Philz, you lived up to all of the hype from my SF friends. I've just been too lazy to GO to SF (and then find you there) for a cuppa your delicious brew. BUT now that you've opened up on my neighborhood (and a Doughnut Dolly next door), I have no choice but to visit you OFTEN! No one has been able to explain Philz to me and why it's so good. The idea is that they hand drip each cup of coffee ordered and you pick your blend! They have a whole range of brews from light to dark and within each strenght of coffee are like 5-7 selections. Since it was my first time, the barrista asked me a few questions and we finally decided that the Jacob's (something) would be my choice. OH and they add the cream and sugar for you? YAY, because I am THAT lazy, I appreciate this. It also makes the place cleaner. ($4 for a large coffee) I love Peets and Blue Bottle. I hate Sbux. BUT, what sets Philz apart is the huge selection and you are not slave to the one bean of the day that they are making. I find Blue Bottle too acidic and unfriendly. Service: SO FRIENDLY! and Patient. My kids had hot chocolate and I daresay that this is the best hot chocolate ever made because it was actually CHOCOLATELY! Imagine that. Usually we find from other places that the hot chocolate is really weak and just warm milk with a touch of chocolate. here, the chocolate was as dark as the coffee. DECADENT. ($3 for small hot chocolate) Seating: there's a long communal table and a quad seating area. There's also some tables outside. Parking: Small parking lot and street parking. This is on the edge of the "industrial" part of Berkeley. I'm hoping they can keep the homeless people that tend to hang out up on Gilman and San Pablo out of this part of the strip mall. Overall, I'd say I'm a big fan of this location: parking is pretty easy to find either on the street or the adjacent parking lot; the seating indoors is nice and there's outlets and WiFi if you're looking to get some work done; the staff is super nice. If this is your first time at Philz and you're looking for something a little bit more special than a cup of coffee, definitely try their mint mojito. read more

I literally just left Philz screaming and squealing due to the huge amount of joy I felt while sipping on this BOMB DIGGITY creation my barista made. I can't recall his name but he's a black dude that's super tatted. He pretty much makes the best drinks ever, and he's super chill and friendly--basically like everyone else who works there. I always feel super welcomed every time I come in. I like going to a place where the employees seem happy and like they want to be there. I tend to bring my own tumbler, which they fill all the way and you only pay for the price of a small. :) I came in on a Monday afternoon and was able to order as soon as I got in. You place your order at the bar and pay down the line. The barista encourages you to taste your drink at pick-up and makes sure it is to your liking. This specific Philz has a small parking lot and is right across from Whole foods, which is why I chose this location over the other one. They have outdoor seating on their porch and provide a long table and couches to do work indoors. read more

That said, coffee was as excellent as ever. Which is the whole reason to go to a Philz anyway. Also, we like this location. Right off the freeway. At least early on Saturday morning (7:30 ish), it was easy to find parking and there was no line! That is a rarity when visiting any Philz location. Was kinda surprised they have no espresso but I guess they're specializing in coffee only and there are tons of selections. But to hop on 80 and that traffic when there's 5 great coffee spots in Oakland I can name off the top of my head (highwire, BiCa, timeless, blue bottle, Farley's east) isn't worth the drive for me personally. My friends told to try their infamous Mint Mojito Iced Coffee and it definitely didn't disappoint! Delicious iced coffee goodness all with a heavenly mint flavor that enhances the coffee taste buds. Sophie, excuse me if i spelled your name wrong, is a very fun & very beautiful barista. Shes polite and was the one who prepared my drink this morning. At the last minute she remembered i wanted almond milk, and quickly re made my drink. I was able to leave with 2 drinks at the price of one. Thats what you call great customer service. This is my favorite Philz. Plenty of places to sit, great light and airflow, super nice baristas, and a relaxed environment. Now during Covid times they're doing a great job navigating pickup orders in a way that feels very safe and mindful. They're coffee drinks are just perfect. great & apologic customer service. Lousy coffee. Let me correct that, medium roast coffee's taste reflects the coffee beans, dark roast coffee reflects the roasting - any beans will do. Philz' style is down right burnt, losing aroma and flavor. Got plenty of caffeine though. Your choice (my opinion) If you like it, and purchase it at a grocery store, check the roasting date, as I've noticed it at local groceries several months old. I don't usually drink coffee but Philz is an exception to say the least. My go to is their mint mojito which I usually get with almond milk and medium sweetness. I'm so glad they opened one closer to me so I can pop in when I'm itching for a cup of coffee. The building is pretty cool with a gate that opens up on nicer days for fresh air and sun. There's a private lot and ample street parking but that can fill up quickly at times. An alternative is to park in the Rei/Chipotle parking lot a block away and walk over Their coffee definitely exceptional. read more
