Never actually got to try the coffee because I was scolded by the very serious person behind the counter for standing in the wrong spot. This, combined with the self-important air and hipster vibe turned me off completely. Their disabled elevator did not work, and there would be no way for someone in a wheelchair to access this shop. I really like both locations in Berkeley. The one near University has a little private lot. It's also next to Dolly Donut. I wanna try that some day! $5 for a large cup. Bring your own cup & I think you get a little discount. Or was it you pay the same, but you get more? I can't quite recall. Sometimes the level of sweet was can be hit or miss drowning in who makes your drink. But I have found that most of the baristas make it not overly sweet then have you taste it. Staff here is friendly and always make sure the drink is made to your liking. There's less room to study here than at the Philz on Shattuck, but there's a great modern vibe here. Parking is easy with the lot behind Office Depot and street parking (no meters!) Definitely bring in your own mug or jar...I brought a cleaned out glass spaghetti jar and they filled it to the brim. The mint mojito is my go-to but the mocha tesora is also delicious...nice rich chocolate flavor. The gingersnap iced coffee is just alright. This Philz has been my stop every time I head to Napa. It's convenient as it's not too far from the freeway. Everyone knows their coffees, but I have to say their gluten free coffee cake they sell is pretty yummy! The parking lot is small, but I never have a problem. Theirs some street parking available, but there's always Whole Foods across the street. You can park there and shop for groceries after you pick up your Philz. The cops love to hangout here too, they love their coffee. read more

Safe to say that this location in Berkeley is 10000 times better than the location on Shattuck Ave! I say this only because of the layout of the place--much more space for customers to wait for their drinks and walk around compared to the Shattuck location. Baristas are always friendly but I think I trust the baristas at the Shattuck location more than 9th street-- last I ordered a Turkish here and the guy burned the coffee a bit :( Every time I order something at the Philz on Shattuck, everything is made to perfection (mojitos, coffees, iced coffees, etc). I guess it comes down to this: would your rather have more space to breathe/wait and not be squished against the pastry glass at Philz Shattuck or would you rather have consistently well brewed coffee? I don't think the one burned coffee will deter me from coming to this location because Philz is THE BEST (and I always feel suffocated and hot waiting in Philz on Shattuck). What a sporadic review. Let's just summarize here: I love Philz. Every blend they have is delicious and there is tons more breathing space here vs. Shattuck. read more

I've always been a huge fan of Philz, and this location is amazing! The place is super clean, and the staff is super friendly and efficient. I especially love that they have quite a few baristas on hand, to ensure that the line continues to flow smoothly. The close proximity to Doughnut Dolly is also a huge plus, in addition to the private parking lot. Quick note: the parking lot can fill up pretty quickly at peak times, i.e. Saturday mornings. But you should be able to find street parking fairly easily. PROS: Parking here is usually a breeze, with a small lot right outside and ample (UNMETERED) street parking. The staff are all SUPER friendly, and make sure to get your order just right and to your liking. My go-to drinks are the Philtered Soul or the Ecstatic Iced Coffee, but you can't go wrong with anything here, really. It's a great location if you want to park and pick up a quick coffee to go, as it's a smaller location. Like at all other Philz, save the earth by bringing in your own reusable mug! They'll fill it to the brim for the price of a small coffee, so you get more bang for your buck. :) (Very Minor) CON: If you end up staying a bit to do some work or to hang out, it can get a bit drafty right by the air vents. Just got a cup of Tesora at this Philz location. Compared to my neighborhood Philz (Shattuck), the organization of this space works brilliantly for the Philz ordering experience. There's even a handy bench to sit while your barista prepares your coffee. Since it was the weekend, I expected the line to be out the door. Nope, I didn't have to wait at all...and there's parking! I've been coming here for 2 years, and I'm still hooked on the drink that I first tried: Philtered Soul (Philz Way - medium sugar, medium cream)! My other favorite drink recommendation for y'all who love a more nutty/toasty flavored drink: Tesora (Philz Way). Here are some location highlights: -Baristas are extremely friendly. Frequent this place regularly and they'll have your drink order memorized and ready-to-go. -When you pick up your drink from the bar, the baristas always ask you to try it and see if it's perfect for you. If it is, you're good to go! If not, they're more than happy to fix your drink. -This Philz location has a long, communal table with plenty of chairs and a decent number of outlets. It's a good place for studying and getting work done; however, I would recommend bringing headphones (if you need them to focus). People are always coming in and out. There are also couches in the middle of the coffee shop, which are great for reading the newspaper or book, catching up with a friend, or simply relaxing as you enjoy your daily fix of Philz :) read more

My go to coffee place anytime I'm in the area or even if I'm passing through 80. Really like the location since it's right off the freeway and usually I'm lucky enough to find parking. The baristas are always super friendly and accommodating. If it's your first time to Philz I say you can never go wrong with their world famous MINT MOJITO ICED COFFEE. If your looking for something warmer lately I've been on a medium roast run and have tried their PHILTERED SOUL which is really good. The best part of it is that they will ask you how sweet you want your drink light medium or really sweet. And will tailor make your drink however you want. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Cons: - Their cups are not recyclable. - Their pastries lack uniqueness and quality. I have been hoping they would change companies for quite some time now. I just don't get pastries there. - Coffee is all blends. Can't tell where they get their coffee as they don't advertise this. - Don't offer organic cream to my knowledge. This is the closest Philz to Hercules. The only time I swing by here is if we happen to be in the neighborhood. With that said, I'm not really familiar with their coffee menu but I know their mint mojito ice coffee is popular. If mint mojito is not my craving for the morning then I just scan the menu and tell the barista what I want and so far the coffees I've chosen weather dark, medium roast or decaf as been pretty good. I also like their vegan donuts. Btw donut dolly is next door.... I was on my way to REI when I noticed Philz Coffee was just around the corner. After numerous friends of mine raved about the coffee from this place I knew I had to check it out. I gave the mint mojito iced coffee a try today, and it was absolutely delicious. Not too strong, but with all the proper flavors a mint mojito with a mixture of coffee should have. The barista was extremely polite and friendly and catered the drink to my want. The employees at this location are very delightful, from the baristas to the cashier! The coffee here is the boobs of coffee. It is the best. Made fresh right in front of you. It's simple. No lattecinos or frappacannas or whatever weird vaguely Italian sounding names for drinks I'll never order cluttering the menu. Just coffee. There's a few flavoring options for their light, dark, and medium blends, and there's tea if you're into that. The coffee is sexy and the people (baristas and the customers alike) are cool. I went into Phillz because I like coffee and I wanted to try something great. I was the only person in there. There were about 4 baristas and cashier working. I ordered a small (the smallest size they could make) black coffee. It took 20 mins to get the coffee and another 5 for me to pay. Please remember I was the only one in the store. When I got to the store the coffee tasted like the smell of burning hair. It was terrible. I will never go again. Oh and the small black coffee was $4.75 WTF! read more

I've been drinking Philz for a couple years now and I can tell you they still have the best drip coffee in the Bay, better than Blue Bottle, Peet's, Allegro, HighWire, etc. A double-brewed Greater Alarm is my go-to drink if I really need to wake up, or you can't go wrong with their Hazelnut or Tesora w/ Almond Milk.
