One thing you don't want with your coffee is attitude.
Buying a cup of coffee to go should not be a bad experience. You are standing in line, you are often on your way to get somewhere, and you are looking for a little satisfaction.
That's it.
I had an unpleasant encounter with the order window attendant at the Berkeley Philz. It was unsettling, so I reached out to them by phone, and once by email through their online CONTACT US link.
Here is what I said-
"A few weeks ago, I had some time to kill and decided to get a Cup of coffee. There is no shortage of coffee spots in Berkeley, but I had never been to Phils, so I thought I would give it a try. There are two windows at this location , in a bunch of people hanging out in front of one of them, and someone told me that this was a the window where you picked up your mobile order.
At the other window, the menu was a little confusing, and as I was trying to figure it out, your employee rather impatiently asked for my order, and when I replied that I was going to have a coffee, they said, "You know, there's a 25 minute wait for coffee ". Since there was no line, I asked why this was , and they said, "because we make each Cup individually". Even so, since there was no apparent backup, 25 minutes seemed like a long time to make a cup of drip coffee, and the only response was "we make each cup individually, which coffee do you want?".
The menu was confusing, so I think I just pointed to one.
"What size", again impatiently. I didn't know the sizes, so I just pointed to medium sized cup that was on display.
I had intended to get something to eat along with my coffee, but was a bit rattled by the way I was being treated. There was no one else in line, so it wasn't like they had to get to the net person.
I stood back from the window, and after a while, this employee called out the names of someone who had already been waiting. However, a large truck was passing by, and I realized how difficult it might be for me to hear my own name, so I spent the next several minutes waiting in front of the window.
When the employee brought my coffee, I said something like, "I have never been her before, but you might want to know that between you wearing a mask, the plexiglass shield separating us, and the trucks going by, it is difficult to hear you call our names". The Philz response was (with attitude), "have a wonderful day".
My position is there is no need for impatience and attitude, they are not doing me a favor. I am not there for their benefit, but
for a brief moment in time, they are there for my benefit. I was upset enough that I saved the sticker that was pasted to my cup (attached), just so I could tell you about it specifically.
I called your office, and got a message from customer service that the "Mailbox was full", so on the general VM, I left a message that I would like to speak with a Customer Service Supervisor.
No one ever returned my call.
I tried again this morning, but there seemed to be no option to leave a message, and once again, the mailbox was full."
That email went out just over two weeks ago.
It is obvious when reading these reviews that people like Philz, so I don't expect to change anyone's mind. However, in Berkeley, there is good coffee within three blocks of wherever you are standing-most of it without attitude. read more
