3.5 While I enjoyed my visit to Phil's, I am hard pressed to understand the adoration it inspires. Some things about Phil's are very nice. Some are not. First, the sauce is good. A little pasty, but a good flavor. Second, the toppings are very good. In particular, the sausage is highly edible on its own. Third, the staff, which seems to number in the dozens, is neither particularly personable nor solicitous. Why should they be? Some demerits, then. The crust is not good. It recalls one of those horrific cookbooks of the 1950s or 1960s. "Now You're Cooking...With Table Crackers." It is not a virtue to make crust like this. Even if it is better than any frozen pizza crust you have ever had, or even if it is better than the thin crust at Pizza Hut, the fact that these comparisons come to mind is not a positive. Second, the cheese is wholly acceptable, but not a good match for the high-sodium sauce. I am not a fan of Chicago's "deep dish pizza" at all...I'm sure all of you can argue with me but I think in Italy, you don't see locals making a deep dish pizza! So when I'm looking for pizza, its either NYC slices or Chicago's thin crust! Phil's was a great find and I can't believe I never tried it before. The pizza traveled in the car and did not get soggy once it arrived to our plates. The flavor of the sauce was just right and the crust was delicious. I can't say much about the service. Phil's has the best pizza in the city (period). I wasn't sold on this place until my GF and friends insisted we get it when they would come over from the west side after Sox games. Really good thin crust South Side pizza. Lots of flavor... Possibly the most toppings I've ever seen (so much sausage!) The reason I can't give it five stars is that the sausage didn't have all that much flavor. As you work your way to the outside of the slice, the taste changes from savory to sweet as there is a higher sauce to cheese ratio, so the flavors change within each slice and you don't get bored. The restaurant is as no frills as it gets. No cups, no tap water, just tin foil, a pizza in paper and a bottle of soda. Classic south side pizza place. read more

My friend/fellow yelper Luis introduced me to Phil's pizza. Since then I have only ordered from Phil's. Being a non-native to Chicago, I have always hated Chicago style pizza. I know, tsk tsk... but who likes the sauce on top of the cheese?!?! That's just weird. I always get delivery 'cuz I'm just that lazy. They DELIVER! They never used to. So glad they started not too long ago. I called last night at 8:45pm and ordered a medium special pizza ($15.55). The "special" is a thin crust pizza that comes with sausage, mushroom, green peppers, and onion. The person who took my order over the phone was quick, efficient, and friendly. The delivery guy called upon arrival at exactly 9:45pm and said he has arrived. I told him which door to go to, gave him his tip and we were able to enjoy a really really hot pizza. Total came to $19.20 with tax and delivery. Pizza was hot and it was phenomenal. I've ordered from them before, the pizza is usually consistent in taste (sausages can be on the saltier side for some), but their customer service has been up and down. Regardless, last night's experience with Phil's Pizza will keep me as their loyal pizza customer when I'm not in the mood for some deep dish. We came at Friday around 5 pm before the dinner rush hit. We ordered our pizzas and they made it fresh and we waited about 15-20 min-- not bad at all considering people were coming in the entire time. I want to like Phil's Pizza, but I truly felt like the crust was not worthy of the amazing sauce, ample cheese, and delicious bits of perfectly seasoned sausage and crisp pepperoni. Everything is good here except the crust- it felt like it was too soft and doughy in the center while maintaining a crispy exterior. The best metaphor for the crust is saying how it should be like a pita chip texture, but instead it was more like a ritz cracker in terms of mouthfeel. The price was good, we shared a small 2-topping pizza for $14 and that was including tax and our 2 cans of soda. The pepperoni was good, crispy and charred along the edges as it should be, but nothing to write home about. Their sausage really stands out and they didn't skimp- the chunks were huge! Next time, I would add mushrooms and make it a 3-topping. A small is more than enough for 2 hungry hungry hippo adults like us. The place inside is very divey, simple decor but clean and large tables with plenty of seating. Bathrooms are clean. Lady taking orders is really nice. Clearly a family owned establishment and neighborhood joint. Phil's definitely has one of the best pizzas! They definitely don't skimp on the toppings. I always get the sausage and pepperoni. I'm not sure how they manage it but the sausage and pepperoni both have amazing flavor. This place is old school Bridgeport: great food, abrupt service. Almost every time I call, the person answering the phone is talking to at least two other people at the same time (one on another phone and someone in person). I definitely recommend pickup over delivery. While the delivery driver is such a nice guy, the pizza does take a while to arrive and is warm at best. We used the trusty app to find a place near Bridgeport to eat after our museum visit. At that point, we were looking for anything for dinner and we saw that this place had seating. We preordered a jumbo half cheese, half pepperoni and sausage for our family. We get there and see that the place has seating, but nothing spectacular. There are paintings in one corner, wood tables and chair and kitchen with ovens. Our pizza was still on the bake, so we decided to take a look at the art. The artist's last name is Wait, from Lithuania. Nice guy and was good with the kids. He even let them paint on his canvas while we waiting, which was nice of him. So the pizza de resistance...we get the pie and start on it. OMG, what a pizza! The sausage was nice chunks of meat and very tasty. Not saucy at all and the dough/crust was nice and buttery. Salty enough to make this one solid pie! It has an old neighborhood feel local Bridgeportians are used to, but we were so glad to have found it. Great pie, unique atmosphere, and very Chicago! I found out about Phil's through an old coworker years ago when I couldn't get pizza from my standby Lena's. See Lena's tends to be very old school and do things like close for vacation for a week or two every year. She told me Phil's is similar and to try it out. It's close enough that it has become my standard backup pizza place. They only get three stars because they don't do Italian ice or have desserts on the menu. To me that is just a travesty. Any good restaurant knows dessert is a must, even if it's just a brownie or cookie on the menu. Hey that's their loss. As for the pizza, the cheese is good, the crust southside thin and the pepperoni and sausage are good stuff. Phil's is really great pizza! Very fresh ingredients! The sausage...oh my.....huge chunks if delicious, fresh meat! The crust is buttery and crisp. The sauce is perfect...not too tangy/sweet/salty. I was born in Chicago on January 12th 1981. My family moved to Tennessee when I was a kid. We would go up on vacation just about every summer and while we were there we would get Phil's at least once. As an adult I ended up moving to New Jersey and haven't had many chances to go back to my home city. And I'd put Phil's pizza up against and pizza in New York or New Jersey. I wish and hope someone reads this and knows how to send me Phil's pizza in the mail. I've order other Chicago pizzas but nothing stand up to Phil's. I consider myself a regional pizza expert. I've tried pizza throughout the Chicago area. I've put in about 30 years of research. Phil's pizza is at the top five of my list for thin crust pizza in chicago. The sauce is perfectly balanced to allow for the flavors of the toppings. While I generally prefer pepperoni, their sausage is very good and unique. The pie's are affordable. If you have them deliver to you, they are reliable and the pizza's do get to you hot within about an hour. Enjoy! read more

Phil's has been a Bridgeport neighborhood spot forever. The pizza here is consistently good and heavy on the toppings. This is not deep dish, it's a Chicago thin crust, cut in squares and covered in meat, cheese and sauce. We prefer asking for ours well done. This takes about 40 mins for a pickup order. They deliver but as I'm less than a mile away, I prefer pickup or you can eat in at the dining area. If you order a Jumbo, it comes with a complimentary 2 Liter of your favorite Pepsico soda. read more
